• 2D Image Creator for a video game

  I need to make a few images for an arcade video game I'm making in Java. As of right now, I have drawings that animate, but there are two problems. The drawings are horrible, and as a result, the game won't get enough attention. It's a pain to have to change each coordinate for the drawing, as the drawings are fairly complex. I'd like to use images. I feel they could solve my problem. They would look better than the drawings, and it would only have an x and a y coordinate, rather than the many coordinates I need for each drawing. So, in a sense, I have two questions. Would images actually help? Would they solve my 2 problems? I just want to clarify. How would I make these images. I don't think I can copy them off of the internet because I plan on publishing this game. So, is there any software where you can make your own images? (It has to be in an image type that Java can support. I'm working with java). It also, as stated by the header, needs to be a 2D image; not 3D

• ecommerce options for 5-6 products [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Ecommerce Script Should I Use? We're looking to develop a simple e-commerce solution to sell 5-6 products. We'd rather not have to use PayPal's buttons (buy it now!) if there's an existing alternative, but would also for budget/time constraints don't want to roll our own. Are there any small, basic ecommerce solutions available that would allow this? I did look at Foxy Cart but the monthly fee was a bit of a turn off. (I must sound extremely fussy I'm aware!) Something like Zen would just be overkill for our needs. Thanks for any suggestions.

• Will an online degree get you a job that requires "CS or equivalent 4-year degree"? [on hold]

  I'm a nerdy slacker type who didn't get my life together till I was 30. I've had a real job for a couple years doing C#/SQL. I've gotten several raises, but I'm making less than most developers, and the atmosphere is ... not positive. Looking for a new job, I think my applications get thrown out because I don't have a degree. And I want to finish a Bachelor's just to feel like less of a loser. I have a lot of college credits from 1996-2003 and a low GPA, so I don't know if that's worth much. An online degree looks like a good option, but I just don't know what I should be looking at for online schools because they all look like fake degrees. If they had programs equivalent to a real Comp Sci degree, I don't think they would have weird sounding names like they do. University of Phoenix has a B.S./Information Technology-Software Engineering. DeVry has a B.S./Computer Engineering Technology program. But that's not CS, and most other things I see have even more fake-sounding names. Are these useless degrees? Some people say DeVry and UoP are acceptable, some people say they're a joke. I have enough experience now, though, that maybe all I'm missing is being able to check the box that I have a 4-year degree. Harvard Extension seems like a real degree, even if it isn't a real Harvard degree, but I'd have to live there at least 3 months, which kinda defeats the purpose of an online degree fitting around work.

• Why to let / not let developers test their own work

  I want to gather some arguments as to why letting a developer testing his/her own work as the last step before the product goes into production is a bad idea, because unfortunately, my place of work sometimes does this (the last time this came up, the argument boiled down to most people being too busy with other things and not having the time to get another person familiar with that part of the program - it's very specialised software). There are test plans in this case (though not always), but I am very much in favor of making a person who didn't make the changes that are tested actually doing the final testing. So I am asking if you could provide me with a good and solid list of arguments I can bring up the next time this is discussed. Or to provide counter-arguments, in case you think this is perfectly fine especially when there are formal test cases to test.

• Recommendations for a quick and easy discussion forum installation

  Hello. I did a couple quick searches on this topic and both Google and this site yielded poor results, but I was wondering what's the quickest way to setup a discussion forum on my website. Preferably one that has a decent Admin dashboard. My website is very static (e.g. it has one index.html, a stylesheet, and a javascript) and it will most likely be hosted on GoDaddy.com. The last time I installed a discussion forum was six years ago and it was phpBB. I'm sure that's still an option, but I'm (hoping) wondering if there are better, free, and as-easy alternatives to phpBB. Thanks for your wisdom!

  I've made a pretty good living as a self-taught programmer, but when I find that I discuss some low-level fundamental topics with my peers who have a CS degree, holes appear in my knowledge. I'm a big picture (architecture) guy, so for a long time this hasn't bothered me, but lately I've wondered if there is an approach I can take that will help me learn these fundamentals without going back to school? • What to learn for a pure practical developer to get better?

  I'm a self taught developer that currently has more than enough experience to hold up against my colleagues waving with their degrees, yet I feel that I'm lacking some important skills to advance further into being a senior level professional in a leading role. More specific in the engineering, planning and designing aspect of software. I've touched the surface of UML, ERM/ERD, have experienced both waterfall and scrum projectmanagement, ... yet I feel there is something missing as every time I start on a new project I don't know where to begin. Should I start diagramming and how? should I start writing an xx page document describing the project on a technical level first, should I dive head first into writing the first tests and code or pseudo-code? I would like to know what, in my case, would be the best way forward, to learn how I can tackle this problem in the future and get better at leading and starting a project. There is not much i don't know about my technical tools and languages but when it gets abstract i'm in trouble.

• Dropping the full-time high-pay gig - I need help choosing a smart path that I can rely on to produce enough to survive comfortably ($2,500 per month)

  I have about 6 years of full time experience developing web applications and tools. I know perl, python, PHP, ruby, and a good deal of SQL and relational theory. I have never had to choose a self-employed path as I have always had full time work or a bank account (credit cards) to support a big project. I'm planning to move out of the country to an area that will not offer local employment, and need some advice on what to focus on. I want to move in no more than six months, I have enough savings to live for an additional six months, but I would like to conserve it as much as possible. I enjoy taking risks, so I'm not looking for discussion of whether this is a good idea or not. I want advice on the most reliable solution given my skill set. Some paths I'm considering: Learn objective-c and build quality Apple software. Develop subscription based web tools for SEO, or other Marketing applications Attempt to acquire freelance projects by developing a reputation within open source projects, freelancer.com, and other online communities The last time I left my job, I was building a startup (that went under), and missed out living in a beautiful place due to the amount of time I worked. • What is the right option of programming languages and tools for building our website?

  We are 3 persons trying to build a large website which will be available in 3 languges. However, we will start with one language and with small idea then we are going to improve it and make it larger! What do you think the best tools and language that we should use? We are caring alot about the speed of loading the pages and tools that provide excellent qulaity with cheaper fees. Edit: We are graphic designers, so we did not choose the programming language yet. • Should I continue to pursue programming based on my experience?

  The reason I ask this question is because I am not sure my troubles come from a lack of confidence, or something much deeper like lack of passion. I'm hoping experienced programmers and developers can help identify the cause of my troubles. To be brief my undergraduate major was in Computer Science, but in a small school and I had the highest gpa in my year in computer science. The first time I ever programmed was once in the 5th grade (using logo) and when I was a freshman in college. I enjoyed programming when I was in school. Then I did an internships where I was expected to produce image processing software and program microchips. I was unsuccessful and produced little results and I hated the job, because I had to figure out everything for myself, did not have any help, and there was a lot of pressure to produce results. Although I tried I could not figure out what to do and was stuck all the time and made me dislike the job. When the internship ended I went to a PhD program for computer science at a prestigious computer science school. I had a very hard time with the course, met people who have been programming since they were 6 and made plenty of applications in their spare time (which I never did, although I tried). I even met many sophomores who understood more than I did. The combination of this and other things have made me feel that programming is not for me, but sometimes I consider a career in programming. I still consider programming as a career because of the career potential (not only just because of money). Based on my experience do you believe my confidence has just been shaken and I should continue to prepare for a programming career, or do you see a lack of passion and it would make it tough to continue programming. thank you for reading and for your advice Thank you for everyone's advice so far! Also: I dropped out of the ph.D program for computer science and switched to a master's in computer graphics. Should I start with the CSS, design and look&feel using dummy data first, or should I program in the logic, events and output, and style it later? • How to print with PYGTK on quickly

  I am trying to make a program that can open save and print texts with Quickly, but I can't get the printing part to work. In my code when you press the "printbutton" it opens a print dialog: def on_printbutton_clicked(self,widget): self.printdialog.show() and that works fine. And when you click "ok" it will gather the settings from the dialog and try to print: def on_printdialog_response(self,widget,ok): printjob = gtkunixprint.PrintJob(self.filename,self.printdialog.get_selected_printer,self.printdialog.get_setting,self.printdialog.get_page_setup) but when I run it doesn't work and just gives me this: NameError: global name 'gtkunixprint' is not defined Is "gtkunixprint" wrong? Or is it something else in my code? Or should I first import something? I hope you can help me.

• How do you apply to a company way out of your league?

  First, my background: I'm in the market for a new job I have ~2 years experience under my belt Nothing on my resume would JUMP out at you Thus far in my career I've been able to become productive quickly and have been continually praised by managers and coworkers for my abilities to learn and produce. I don't mean to be bragging here, but I want to get across that (at least in my mind) I could be categorized as "very promising young developer" I've been job hunting for a little while now and like most job seekers I've found a handful of companies that are basically "dream" jobs (think Fog Creek or 37Signals). If I were to apply to a company like that in the normal recruitment channels, my resume would probably not make it past the first set of filters. Now, I accept that I'm a longshot for a job at the hottest companies out there, but in my job search I've had a little success in applying for positions I'm not qualified for simply by doing something a little different: sending an email outlining how I don't meet the qualifications but stating why I would do well in the job anyways. In other cases, I've outright asked for a small project/problem that would be representative of the work to prove I can do the job, since I didn't have the specific skills on my resume yet. What I'm wondering is: If I'm not qualified on paper for a particular job, what creative/unique/impressive methods have you thought of or seen work to at least get an interview? For the sake of argument, assume I really am a "very promising young developer". I would love to hear from people who are responsible for hiring - I'd like to hear examples of techniques that got someone noticed when they otherwise wouldn't have. Clarification: I know that I need to continue building my resume to continue advancing. But I'm in the job search NOW, so I'm looking for other approaches

• Being stupid to get better productivity?

  I've spent a lot of time reading different books about "good design", "design patterns", etc. I'm a big fan of the SOLID approach and every time I need to write a simple piece of code, I think about the future. So, if implementing a new feature or a bug fix requires just adding three lines of code like this: if(xxx) { doSomething(); } It doesn't mean I'll do it this way. If I feel like this piece of code is likely to become larger in the nearest future, I'll think of adding abstractions, moving this functionality somewhere else and so on. The goal I'm pursuing is keeping average complexity the same as it was before my changes. I believe, that from the code standpoint, it's quite a good idea - my code is never long enough, and it's quite easy to understand the meanings for different entities, like classes, methods, and relations between classes and objects. The problem is, it takes too much time, and I often feel like it would be better if I just implemented that feature "as is". It's just about "three lines of code" vs. "new interface + two classes to implement that interface". From a product standpoint (when we're talking about the result), the things I do are quite senseless. I know that if we're going to work on the next version, having good code is really great. But on the other side, the time you've spent to make your code "good" may have been spent for implementing a couple of useful features. I often feel very unsatisfied with my results - good code that only can do A is worse than bad code that can do A, B, C, and D. Are there any books, articles, blogs, or your ideas that may help with developing one's "being stupid" approach?

• Does my approach for building a real time monitoring system make sense? [closed]

  I am developing an application that will display a dashboard that will display data from different SQL databases. This needs to happen in almost real time, our refresh time is about 5 minutes. My approach so far is: Develop a Windows service to accumulate the data from various SQL Server instances. Persist those details into a SQL DB, from which the dashboard will display them on the web page. Trigger fetching of data from the Windows service will every x minutes. The details of the SQL Server instances will be stored in the SQL DB which the Windows service will be referring. Does my approach make sense?

  QUESTION: How should you handle compound words when programming? Are there any good lists available online for developers of generally accepted technology-related compound words? I can see how this is highly ambiguous, so should I just use common-sense? EXAMPLE: I would be inclined to do this: filename NOT FileName or login NOT LogIn However, the microsoft documentation indicates that filename is not compound. • How should I track approval workflow when users at every security level can create a request?

  I am writing a new application that allows users to enter requests. Once a request is entered, it must follow an approval workflow to be finally approved by a user the highest security level. So, let's say a user at Security Level 1 enters a request. This request must be approved by his superior - a user at Security Level 2. Once the Security Level 2 user approves it, it must be approved by a user at Security Level 3. Once the Security Level 3 user approves it, it is considered fully approved. However, users at any of the three Security Levels can enter requests. So, if a Security Level 3 user enters a request, it is automatically considered "fully approved". And, if a Security Level 2 user enters a request, it must only be approved by a Security Level 3 user. • Creating a portfolio of projects [closed]

  As I pursue the path of becoming a programmer, I would like to build up a portfolio of projects I worked on at my current job so that I can eventually get programming work elsewhere (either as an employee, contractor, one man consulting shop, etc). Some of these were things I coded myself, others I was instrumental in the architecture, design and functionality (ie, not as a programmer but more of a BA). How do I show the work that I have done to others on the projects that I have produced for the company I work at? This is all internal software, so it's not something that the outside world would be able to use, and some of our products contain proprietary financial market tools and it would not be prudent to share those with the outside world. My guess is that screenshots would definitely be out of the question, as well as functional descriptions of the software.

• How do you QA and release software quickly (some call it agile) with a large team?

  My work used to be a smaller team. We had less than 13 devs for a while. We are now growing rapidly, and are over 20 with plans to be over 30 in a few months (triple dev size!!!) Our process for QA'ing and releasing each build is no longer working. We currently have everyone develop the new code, and stick it onto a staging environment. A few days before our weekly release, we would freeze the staging environement and QA everything new / old. By our normal release time everything was usually deemed acceptable and pushed out the door to the main site. We reached a point where our code got too big so we could no longer regress the entire site each week in QA. We were ok with that, we jsut made a list of everything important and only covered that and the new stuff. Now we are reaching a point where all the new stuff each week is becoming too big and too unstable. Our staging environment is really buggy week after week, and we are usually 1-2 hrs behind the normal release time. As the team is growing further, we are going to drown with this same process. We are re-evaluating everything, and I personally am looking for suggestions / success stories. Many companies have been where before and progressed beyond, we need to do the same

• What are some efficient ways to set up my environment when working on a remote site?

  Hello fellow Programmers, I am still a relatively new programmer and have recently gotten my first on-campus programming position. I am the sole dev responsible for 8 domains as well as 3 small sized PHP web apps. The campus has its web environment divided into staging and live servers -- we develop on the staging via SFTP and then push the updates to the live server through a web GUI. I use Sublime Text 2 and the Sublime SFTP plugin currently for all my dev work (its my preferred editor). If I am just making an edit to a page I'll open that individual file via the ftp browser. If I am working on the PHP web app projects, I have the app directory mapped to a local folder so that when I save locally the file is auto-uploaded through Sublime SFTP. I feel like this workflow is slow and sub-optimal. How can I improve my workflow for working with remote content? I'd love to set up a local environment on my machine as that would eliminate the constant SFTP upload/download, but as I said there are many sites and the space required for a local copy of the entire domain would be quite large and complex; not to mention keeping it updated with whatever the latest on the staging server is would be a nightmare. Anyone know how I can improve my general web dev workflow from what I've described? I'd really like to cut out constantly editing over FTP but I'm not sure where to start other than ripping the entire directory and dumping it into XAMP.
