Getting a NullPointerException at seemingly random intervals, not sure why

I'm running an example from a Kinect library for Processing (http://www.shiffman.net/2010/11/14/kinect-and-processing/) and sometimes get a NullPointerException pointing to this line: int rawDepth = depth[offset]; The depth array is created in this line: int[] depth = kinect.getRawDepth(); I'm not exactly sure what a NullPointerException is, and much googling hasn't really helped. It seems odd to me that the code compiles 70% of the time and returns the error unpredictably. Could the hardware itself be affecting it? Feedback is welcome. I think have come up with two naive algorithms that find the heaviest length-constrained path in a weighted Binary Tree. Firstly, the description of the algorithm is as follows: given an n-vertex Binary Tree with weighted edges and some value k, find the heaviest path of length k. For both algorithms, I'll need a reference to all vertices so I'll just do a simple traversal of the Tree to have a reference to all vertices, with each vertex having a reference to its left, right, and parent nodes in the tree. Algorithm 1 For this algorithm, I'm basically planning on running DFS from each node in the Tree, with consideration to the fixed path length. In addition, since the path I'm looking for has the potential of going from left subtree to root to right subtree, I will have to consider 3 choices at each node. But this will result in a O(n*3^k) algorithm and I don't like that. Algorithm 2 I'm essentially thinking about using a modified version of Dijkstra's Algorithm in order to consider a fixed path length. Since I'm looking for heaviest and Dijkstra's Algorithm finds the lightest, I'm planning on negating all edge weights before starting the traversal. Actually... this doesn't make sense since I'd have to run Dijkstra's on each node and that doesn't seem very efficient much better than the above algorithm. So I guess my main questions are several. Firstly, do the algorithms I've described above solve the problem at hand? I'm not totally certain the Dijkstra's version will work as Dijkstra's is meant for positive edge values. Now, I am sure there exist more clever/efficient algorithms for this... what is a better algorithm? I've read about "Using spine decompositions to efficiently solve the length-constrained heaviest path problem for trees" but that is really complicated and I don't understand it at all. Are there other algorithms that tackle this problem, maybe not as efficiently as spine decomposition but easier to understand? Thanks.

A new method of supporting FOSS?

I have been kicking an idea around for sometime and wondered if something of it's nature hadn't already been invented. The premise is a website that integrates code management, project/team management, and micro-transactions. Donations, in and of themselves, are a sporadic, and unreliable method of supporting developers. Furthermore most free software that accepts donations is started by programmers ,be it to learn, because of a hobby, or because they saw a niche that needed to be filled. There is no method in place of of saying "hay, the FOSS community needs this kind of software, will someone develop it, and accept donations!?" Programmers should be programming, not busy begging for money. Basically the idea is people can go to the site in question, and start a project or make a request. Anyone signed up with the site can start a request. Each member account is free to support or "upvote" a project request. Requests and the associated number of votes let programmers in the community know the needs of the community. When a project is started a request for developers can be put forth. Developers have a ranking based on commits to other projects. The project founder can send invites to known Developers, or accept invites from members based on developer ranking. Once the project has at least one team-member, an objectives sheet or "draft" can be put out, listing design, goals, and features. The founding member and each team-member may contribute to this sheet. Each "milestone", or "Feature" is represented by an article. An article is any unit of a draft that can be voted on by The Project Founder, Team-members, and contributors...which brings me to the next half of this idea. --Microtransactions-- People signed up with this hypothetical website can purchase credits which then can be transfered to projects they would like to support. Anyone who transfers credits to a project is known as a contributor to that project. At anytime a Founder, or the lead team-member may submit an article, or a design (multiple articles) for consideration. All team-members, as well as the Founder, can vote once for each article freely. Contributors may vote yes or no on a number of articles (independent of any given meeting where a particular design or article is considered) equal to the number of credits they have placed into a contributors fund for that particular project. A contributors fund is a proxy between a sites credit account, and a projects credit account. It is sort of like a promise to contribute, instead of an actual contribution. Contributers may place constraints on particular articles such that if those constraints (a yes or no vote) are satisfied then a manually specified amount of credits is automatically transfered to the project account. This allows a project to develop based on the needs of those who may (in the future) financially rely on the project. --- Code commits & milestones --- When a team-member makes a commit, they may specify if it's a minor commit, a bug fix, a compatibility patch (i.e. for a new platform), or a milestone (an article voted on previously). People signed up with the website, may download the updated project and test it to see if the programmer's assertion is true about the commit. A report may then be filed on a small form, giving a one or two paragraphs, and a positive or negative confirmation of the programmer's goal for that particular commit. After all milestones for a particular draft are complete, a new draft is submitted for voting. Also funds may withdrawn by each team-member based on the proportion of commits and milestones confirmed (fulfilled the stated purpose) for each programmer. --- voting --- Members, contributor, and non-contributor, may make priority requests for particular articles of a draft. The project founder may or may not opt to fill those requests based on the volume of upvotes. A fulfilled priority request means that any team-member that makes a community-confirmed commit for an article is, when all articles for the draft are fulfilled, granted a portion of project credits in proportion to the average priority of all the articles he committed. ---- Notes --- While this is horribly prone to design-by-committee the one saving grace is that the lead team-member may place constraints on a draft such that some, or ALL articles must be voted yes. Commits may not begin until a draft satisfying said constraints is approved. What does SO think, is this idea feasible? Does anyone see major problems with this? Is there any insights, or improvements that could be made?

Windows store apps: ScrollViewer with dinamic content

I have a scrollViewer with an ItemsControl (which holds rows with data) as content. The data from these rows is grabbed from the server so I want to display a ProgressRing with a text until the data arrives. Basically I want the content of the ScrollViewer to be a grid with progress ring and a text and after the data arrives the content to be changed with my ItemsControl. The problem is that the ScrollViewer does not accept more than 1 element as content. Please tell me how can I solve this problem. Alright everyone this is a bit of a complicated setup so if I need to clarify the question just let me know. I have a model: class IconSet < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :icon_graphics end This Model has many icongraphics: class IconGraphic < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :icon_set has_attached_file :icon has_attached_file :flagged end As you can see, IconGraphic has two attached files, basically two different versions of the icon that I want to load. Now, this setup is working okay if I edit the icongraphic's individually, however, for ease of use, I have all the icon graphics editable under the IconSet. However, if I edit the IconSet after the fact, and perhaps try to replace the icon with a new one, or if I uploaded only one of the set and try to add the second attachment, paperclip doesn't put the attachments with the right IconGraphic Model. It seems that even though I have the IconGraphic ID in each partial, <%= icon_form.hidden_field :id, :index => nil %> it seems that paperclip either creates a new IconGraphic or attaches it to the wrong one. This all happens when you save the IconSet, which is setup to save the IconGraphic attributes. I know this is complicated.. I may just have to go to editing each icon individually, but if anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

$_GET loading content before head tag instead of in specified div.

The problem is that the content loads it displays UNDER the div i placed #CONTENT# inside so the styles are being ignored and it's posting #CONTENT# outside the divs at positions 0,0 any suggestions? Found out whats happening by using "View Source" seems that it's putting all of the #CONTENT#, content that's being loaded in front of the <head> tag. ASP.Net repeater item.DataItem is null

Within a webpage, upon loading, I fill a dataset with two table with a relation between those tables and then load the data into a repeater with a nested repeater. This can also occur after the user clicks on a button. The data gets loaded from a SQL database and the repeater datasource is set to the dataset after a postback. However, when ItemDataBound occurs the Item.Dataitem is always null. Fetch a specific tag from Rally in order to compute a value in another field

I'm extremely new to Rally development so my question may sound dumb (but couldn't find how to do it from rally's help or from previous posts here) :) I've started from the rally freeform grid example - my purpose is to implement a Business Value calculator: I fill the score field with a 5-digit figure where each number is a score in the 1-5 range. Then I compute a business value as the result of a calculation, where each number is weighted by a preset weight. I can sort my stories by Business Value to help me prioritize my backlog: that's the first step, and it works. Now what I want to do is to make my freeform grid editable: I am extracting each of my digits as a separate column, but those columns are display-only. How can I turn them into something editable? What I want to do of course is update back the score field based on the values input in each custom column. Here's an example: I have a record with score "15254", which means Business Value criteria 1 scores 1 out of 5, Business Value criteria 2 scores 5 out of 5, and so on... Usercontrol databinding within a databound datagridview

Good day. I'm developing a Windows application and working with Windows Forms; .Net 2.0. I have an issue databinding a generic List of Car Rental Companies to a DataGridView when that list contains (one of its properties) anoother generic List of Car Makes. I also have a UserControl that I need to bind to this [inner] generic list ... Class CarRentalCompany contains: string Name, string Location, List CarMakes Class CarMake contains: string Name, bool isFord, bool isChevy, bool isOther The UserControl has a label for CarMake.Name and 3 checkboxes for each of the booleans of the class. HOw do I make this user control bindable for the class? In my form, I have a DataGridView binded to the CarRentalCompany object. The list CarMakes could be 0 or more items and I can add these as necessary. How do I establish the binding of CarRentalCompanies properly so CarMakes will bind accordingly?? Sometimes there is more than one inspection in a month, sometimes there is no inspection. However, the report that is desired by the clients requires that I have EXACTLY ONE record per month for the time frame they request the report. They understand the data issues and have stated that if there is more than one inspection in a month to take the latest one. If the is not an inspection for that month, go back in time untill you find one and use that one. I will now say what I have tried. Although if someone else has a better approach, I am perfectly willing to throw away what I have done and do it differently... STEP 1: create a query that removes the duplicates from the data. Ie. only one record per equip_id for each month/year, keeping the latest one. (done successfully) STEP 2: create a table of the date ranges the client wants the report for. (This is done dynamically at runtime) This table two field, Month and Year. So if the client wants a report from FEb 2008 to March 2010 the table would look like: Month Year 2 2008 3 2008 . . . 12 2008 1 2009 . . . 12 2009 1 2010 2 2010 3 2010 I then left joined this table with my query from step 1. So now I have a record for every month and every year that they want the report for, with nulls(or blanks) or sometimes 0s (not sure why, access is weird, but sometiems they are nulls and sumtimes they are 0s...) for the runtimes that are not avaiable. I don't particurally like this solution, but ill do it if i have to. (this is also done successfully) STEP 3: Fill in the missing runtime values. This I HAVE NOT done successfully. Note that if the request range for the report is feb 2008 to march 2010 and the oldest record for a particular equip_id is say june 2008, it is O.K. for the runtimes to be null (or zeros) for feb - may 2008. I am working with the following query for this step: SELECT equip_id as e_id,year,month, (select top 1 runhours from qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month a where a.equip_id = e_id order by year,month) FROM qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month where runhours is null or runhours = 0; UNION SELECT equip_id, year, month, runhours FROM qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month WHERE .runhours Is Not Null And runhours <> 0 However I clearly can't check the a.equip_id = e_id ... so i don't have anyway to make sure i'm looking at the correct equip_id SUMMARY: So like i said i'm willing to throw away any part, or all of what I tried. Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? Many-to-one relation exception due to closed session after loading

Hi, I am using NHibernate (version 1.2.1) for the first time so I wrote a simple test application (an ASP.NET project) that uses it. In my database I have two tables: Persons and Categories. Each person gets one category, seems easy enough. | Persons | | Categories | |--------------| |--------------| | Id (PK) | | Id (PK) | | Firstname | | CategoryName | | Lastname | | CreatedTime | | CategoryId | | UpdatedTime | | CreatedTime | | Deleted | | UpdatedTime | | Deleted | The Id, CreatedTime, UpdatedTime and Deleted attributes are a convention I use in all my tables, so I have tried to bring this fact into an additional abstraction layer. I have a project DatabaseFramework which has three important classes: Entity: an abstract class that defines these four properties. All 'entity objects' (in this case Person and Category) must inherit Entity. IEntityManager: a generic interface (type parameter as Entity) that defines methods like Load, Insert, Update, etc. NHibernateEntityManager: an implementation of this interface using NHibernate to do the loading, saving, etc. Now, the Person and Category classes are straightforward, they just define the attributes of the tables of course (keeping in mind that four of them are in the base Entity class). Since the Persons table is related to the Categories table via the CategoryId attribute, the Person class has a Category property that holds the related category. However, in my webpage, I will also need the name of this category (CategoryName), for databinding purposes for example. However, it seems that is not the case. When I try to data-bind the result of this Load method to a GridView in ASP.NET, it tells me this: Property accessor 'CategoryName' on object 'NHibernateWebTest.Database.Person' threw the following exception:'Could not initialize proxy - the owning Session was closed.' The exception occurs on the DataBind method call here: public virtual void LoadGrid() { if (this.Grid == null) return; this.Grid.DataSource = this.Manager.Load(); this.Grid.DataBind(); } Well, of course the session is closed, I closed it via the using block. Isn't that the correct approach, should I keep the session open? And for how long? Can I close it after the DataBind method has been run? In each case, I'd really like my Load method to just return a functional collection of items. It seems to me that it is now only getting the Category when it is required (eg, when the GridView wants to read the CategoryName, which wants to read the Category property), but at that time the session is closed. Is that reasoning correct? How do I stop this behavior? Or shouldn't I? And what should I do otherwise? Thanks!

hi, I've 2 sets of thumbnails and in each set I'm displaying them one nearby each other in 4 columns using float:left. I would like to "merge" the 2 sets (but I cannot change the html code) because I want the thumbnails of the second set floating right after the last thumbnail of the first set. In other terms, if in the last row there are only 2 thumbnails and the last 2 columns are empty, the thumbnails of the second set should fill the empty columns of the last row of the first set. I am trying to implement Active Directory authentication in Java which will be ran from a Linux machine. Our AD set-up will consist of multiple servers that share trust relationships with one another so for our test environment we have two domain controllers: test1.ad1.foo.com who trusts test2.ad2.bar.com. Trying to use json to populate areas of my website using mysql, php, and jquery.

Ok, so this is my first attempt at doing anything with JSON. I have done a lot with PHP and MySql as well as jQuery and JavaScript...but nothing with JSON. I have some data in a MySql database. In the codes below i am using a PHP file to retrieve the data from the MySql database and using json_encode to format it to JSON. This file is being called by the JavaScript that runs when the page loads (well, it runs on document.ready actually). I then use jQuery to access the JSON keys and values to fill in areas of the page "dynamically". Here is the code snippets i am using (excuse my "noobness" on writing these snippets, still learning all this). Easiest way to submit data via PHP?

I'm new to PHP, and have spent 10 hours trying to figure this problem out. The goal is to take all data entered into this order form, and send it to my email via PHP. I have 2 questions: 1. I can get PHP to send data from a single menu item (example: Mexican Tortas), but how do I get PHP to send data from multiple items (example: Mexican Tortas, Fish Sandwich and Hamburger)? 2. How do I tell PHP to not send data from menu items that don't have the "How Many?" or "Customize It?" text fields filled out?
