• Netgear router keeps disconnecting iPhone

  My old router (Voyager 2091) packed up so I just got a new router - a Netgear N150 model DGN1000. My laptop connects OK wirelessly, but my iPhone 4S is constantly getting "disconnected" - it has perfect wifi signal and is seemingly connected to the router, but no pages load (it says "server cannot be found"). If I disconnect manually ("forget this network") then reconnect, it works fine again for a random amount of time (usually 10-30 minutes) then I get the same problem again. I've done some searching and this appears to be a known problem - there are dozens of forum posts out there lamenting similar connection problems. The only advice I have seen is to set a specific channel under Wireless Settings on the router CP, although every forum post recommends a different channel! 1, 3, 5, 6, 11... I have tried them all for hours at a time and get the exact same problem. The firmware is up to date. Is there an actual solution for this, or do I need to get a different router just to be able to use my iPhone?

• KeePass lost password and/or corruption due to Dropbox/KeePassX

  I started using Keepass about a month ago to hold my passwords and online accounts info. Everything was stored in a single .kdb file, only protected with a password. I'm using Windows 7. Now Keepass can't open my .kdb file with the error "Invalid/wrong key". I'm fairly confident I have the right password. Altough I might have mixed up a few letters I've tried about two dozen different combinations to minimize that possibility - but can't rule it out though. My guess is however that the .kdb file got corrupted, either due to Dropbox syncing (only using it on one computer though) or because I edited the file using KeePassX on Ubuntu (dual boot on the same computer, accessing a mounted Win7 NTFS partition), or possibly a combination of both. I have tried restoring older versions(even the original one) from Dropbox and trying out all possible passwords without any luck. (which does seem to rule out KeePassX as the culprit, since oldest copies are before I edited the file from Ubuntu) I have tried opening the file with the "Repair KeePass Database file" which always gives the "0xA Invalid/corrupt file structure" (the same error for when a wrong password is typed). I was wondering if there was any way for me to salvage my hard-gathered data. I know generally that brute force cracking is not feasible, but since I can remember probably more than half of the usernames/passwords, any maybe the fact that one of them does come up fairly often (my go-to pass for trivial stuff), that might simplify the brute force process to a doable time frame. Maybe the brute-force thing might incorporate the fact that I know the password length and what characters it's made from. (If we assume corruption, not a password-blackout on my part) I could do some programming if there are any libraries or routines that I could use. • (help help!!!) Easy_install the wrong version of python modules (Mac OS)

  I installed Python 2.7 in my mac. The Python version is correct here. But when I try to easy_install some modules. The system will install the modules with python version 2.6 which are not able be imported to Python 2.7. And of course I can not do the functions I need in my code. • VMware "boot screen" - add info like contact, phone number, etc.?

  I've tried searching Google and VMware's KB but maybe I'm not typing the right search criteria...only finding ways to fix problems with booting or screen issues. On the default boot screen of a host it looks similar to this picture from GIS: I'm curious if it is possible somehow to make it look like this instead (adding custom details): I know for the most part the info is "useless" since it is administered remotely, etc. But when I deploy standalone hosts to branch offices, it'd be nice for them to see this type of info on the boot screen. I may also include the VMs hosted on it (again on standalone hosts). Normal monitoring, etc. will be done remotely. This is strictly for odd times when the branch contact may say "the electricians are saying they need to turn off this circuit but I have no idea who to call in IT to tell them this box needs to be shut down" or similar. Anyone who has dealt with small branch offices can tell you that if it isn't labeled they easily forget what it is for and will simply say after the incident "I didn't know what it was or who to call." Possible?

• Word 2010 creates multiple processes... sometimes

  I've run into a strange behavior when I migrated our users from Office 2007 / Vista to Office 2010 / Windows 7 (all 32-bit). They use a web based document management system called NetDocuments which stores all their .doc/.docx files. Generally, when they click on a doc from the browser window it fires up Word and opens the doc. Word has an add-in in it from NetDocs as well so it can upload the changed document directly back to the NetDocs server. I get a phone call when Word crashes, and every single time it has crashed I have witnessed multiple winword.exe processes running in task manager. I used process explorer to see what created the process, and it is all Internet Explorer. So far I have rolled them back to IE8 and the problem happens less frequently, but it still happens. When I try to duplicate the problem, I can make it happen sometimes if I open multiple documents very quickly. Using lightning fast alt-tab reflexes, I DO see that a 2nd WinWord process is created when a user clicks on a document, then it closes once the document is open. I think what is happening is that the secondary WinWord process that does some sort of NetDocs voodoo is getting stuck open. This behavior is new to Word 2010 / Windows 7 and google searching isn't coming up with much. I have seen a few posts that this is a known issue in certain circumstances and there is no "fix", but I thought it would good to ask others on this. Thanks!

  I'm trying to install Node.js on my CentOS server. I run ./configure and it runs perfectly fine. Most of what I've found is for Cygwin anyway, and I'm on CentOS 4.9. Like I said, the ./configure went through perfectly fine with no errors, so there's nothing there that I can see. EDIT I've got a little further. Now I just need to upgrade G++ to version 4 (or higher). I tried yum update gcc but no luck, so I tried yum install gcc44, which resulted in no luck either. Has anyone got any ideas as to how I can update G++?

• Virtual Machine Network Services causes networking problems in Vista Enterprise 64 bit install

  I have a Quad-core/8GB Vista Enterprise 64-bit (SP2) installation on which I installed Virtual PC 2007. I have a problem that is opposite of all that I found searching around the Internet--everybody has problems making network connections from their guest VM. When Virtual Machine Network Services is enabled in the protocol stack for my network card across a reboot, it causes access problems to the network. The amount of time to login in using a domain credentialed account is upwards of 3 minutes, then after reaching the desktop the network and sharing center shows that my connection to the domain is unauthenticated. Disabling and re-enabling the Virtual Machine Network Services (uncheck in network properties/apply/recheck/apply) fixes the problem. And as long as I have the VMNS disabled when I shutdown the restart runs smoothly. I just have to remember to enable after login and disable before shutdown. I have un-installed and re-installed Virtual PC 2007 multiple times with restarts between. The install consists of the SP1 + a KB patch for guest resolution fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Some additional information... At one point during my hairpulling and teethgnashing with this, I tried to ping my primary DC and observed some weird responses: (Our DC is 10.10.10.25, my dynamic IP was 10.10.10.203) Reply from 10.10.10.203, Destination host unreachable. Request timed out. Reply from 10.10.10.25: ... This is not consistently repeatable, but thought it might strike a chord with someone.

• Browsing \\computer\share fails, but net use \\computer\share works?

  I've had mixed results with using Windows Explorer to browse remote file shares. The setup: I'm at work on Windows XP SP3 Files are at home on Windows XP SP3 Two separate VPNs are available to access my PC at home corporate OpenVPN (10.1.2.3) a Hamachi/LogMeIn connection (5.1.2.3) With respect to my problem, it doesn't matter which IP I use. They both perform exactly the same way: I expect that if I open Windows Explorer and type in \\10.1.2.3\Shared I should be interrupted with a challenge for credentials, and then be able to interact with the files in the share. However, I just get that annoying dialog, "Windows cannot find '\10.1.2.3\Shared' Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item ..." However, I can take that exact same computername/sharename and with net use I can: net use * \\10.1.2.3\Shared * /user:homecomputername\username with this result: Type the password for \\5.69.83.158\C$: Drive Z: is now connected to \\5.69.83.158\C$. The command completed successfully. I can then access the files in Z: in Windows Explorer which was my original intent. Even after Z: is already mapped and the credentials are cached I still cannot bring up \\10.1.2.3\Shared in Windows Explorer. Why does the latter work, but not the former? Edit: Other services work fine, such as RDP. (I have a problem in which I can't SSH home, but I'll consider that separately.)

• Ubuntu Natty 11.04, Turning the wireless switch off; switches it off permanently!

• Give access to specific services on Windows 7 Professional machines?

  We have some machines running Windows 7 Professional at our office. The typical user needs to have access to stop and start a service for a local program they run. These machines have a local web server and database installed and we need to restrict access to certain folders and services related to the web server and database for these users. The setup I have tried so far is to add the typical user as a Power User. I have been able to successfully restrict them from accessing certain folders (as far as I can tell) but now they do not have access to the service needed for starting and stopping the local program. My thought was to give them access to the specific service but I have not had any luck yet. In searching the web for solutions the only results I have found relate to Windows Server 2000 and 2003 and involve creating security templates and databases through the Microsoft Management Console. I am hesitant to try an approach like this as these articles are typically older and I worry this method is outdated. Is there a better way to accomplish the end goal of giving the user permission to run the service and restrict their access to certain folders? If any clarification is needed on the setup or what we are trying to achieve, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

  Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post. I tried searching for this issue and all that seemed to come up were questions posted from people who had this issue with their web pages. I couldn't find questions related to this issue from a laypersons perspective. I'm not a developer. I have no domain, nor wish to have one at the time. Rather I'm just a regular person who likes to upload photos to some photo related sites. My uploading process constantly gets interrupted by one of these annoying API errors. I get it at least two times, one when I click the page to upload, and also right after it has uploaded. It also pops up if I go to edit a photo or delete it. This interrupts my browsing experience until I click okay. I just want a fix for the annoying without having to register for a key. I tried before and it required a web domain. I rather not have to create a domain and go through such hoops just to fix this. Is there a solution for this problem that doesn't require registration? Another thing to note: I have used two computers. One has the message pop-up and the other doesn't. What is different about the two computers?

• Joining new DC to AD - DNS name does not exist

  I had a DC fail on me recently and trying to add a new one to my domain, although I'm sensing I might have other issues in my domain. I'm a dev at heart and know just enough about AD to be dangerous so looking for some assistance. My working DC is RIVERCITY-DC12. I'm trying to promote RIVERCITY-DC14 as a DC to the RIVERCITY domain, but when I run DCPROMO, at the NETWORK CREDENTIALS step where I point to the name of the domain (rivercity.local), I get "An AD DC for the domain rivercity.local cannot be contacted" and in the details see "The error was DNS name does not exist" Looking at RIVERCITY-DC12, I can see DNS is working, I've been able to query it from other machines in my domain, and no errors are reported in the DNS category within the Event Viewer. When I checked the FMSO roles, it shows RIVERCITY-DC12 is the machine for all listed roles. Not sure what I should do next or how to troubleshoot/investigate after searching around for a solution... ideas? Environment: Domain: rivercity (rivercity.local) Forest functional level: Windows 2000 (I'm more than happy to raise this) Windows Server 2008 All servers are Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (fully patched)

• How to verify power provided to processors is clean

  Once in a blue moon, I am seeing a blue screen of death on a shiny new Dell R7610 with a single 1100 Watt Dell-provided power supply on a beefy UPS. BCode is 101 (A clock interrupt was not received...), which some say is caused by under-volting a CPU. Naturally, I would have to contact Dell support, and their natural reaction would be to replace a motherboard, a power supply, or CPU, or a mixture of the above components. In synthetic benchmarks, system memory and CPU, as well as graphics memory and CPU perform admirably, staying up for hours and days. My questions are: Is power supply good enough for the application? Does it provide clean enough power to VRMs on the motherboard? Are VRMs good enough for dual Xeon E5-2665? Does C-states logic work correctly? Is there sufficient current provided to PCIe peripherals, such as disk controllers? P.S. Recently, I've gone through the ordeal with HP. They were nice and professional about it, but root cause was not established, and the HP machine still is less than 100%, giving me a blue screen of death once in a couple of months. Further testing shows significant decrease in performance on each of the x16 slots with Dell R7610 with A03 BIOS. But now it's running stable. HP machine has received a microcode update in September 2013 SUM (July BIOS) that makes it stable.

• Create image (EBS AMI) takes forever - possibly caused MySQL Server to break?

  I'm trying to create an EBS AMI from my running EC2 instance to reuse my LAMP fully configured (for my needs). I got my website up and running yesterday on this EC2 instance my MySQL was working fine until this morning (it's not that difficult to install LAMP thanks to yum so I can't see how I could go wrong with this; having said that, it's always difficult for one to realise his own errors) I have seen "Loading, please wait ..." for a few hours now. How do I know whether this is completed or its progress? Shortly after I tried to create the AMI image from my EC2 instance, I encountered database connection error can't connect to local mysql server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' I was able to restart mysqld at first. But database connection was down again. This time, I could not restart mysqld anymore. It shows MySQL Daemon failed to start. Could my attempt to create the AMI by any chance cause the MySQL server to reboot or corrupt? I did a lot of searched and have done the following although I think I shouldn't have to do any workaround for MySQL server to work here chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql/ I also found this workaround but I'm very reluctant to follow due to my belief and the fact I would need to understand this problem first. • ESXi 5 VM Putty session hangs, vSphere client timing out

  First of all I believe this is a ESXi issue but let me know if you have seen this. It started about a year ago when I noticed occasionally when I putty via SSH to my VM guests, if I do anything that makes it to display a lot of things at once, the session will hang and I have to start a new one quite often only to find the same behaviour. What I meant by display a lot of things can be any of the following: 1) tail -f filename 2) Paste a long command 3) less filename If I type in one character at a time this won't happen. I tried searching online and it always point me to flow control settings and the various suggestions I've tried have never been able to resolve the issue. Since last week, I've noticed I'm not able to connect to my POP3 server from Outlook (it's timing out from Outlook's perspective). Today I tried to connect to the ESXi via vSphere client and it gives me a time out also. • Windows 7 remote desktop encryption error every few minutes

  Because of an error in data encryption, this session will now end. This is the error I've been getting more and more frequently over the past few days, to the point that I can't ignore it because it's happening consistently within 5 minutes of connecting - sometimes within a few seconds. Both the remote and local machines are Windows 7 Pro x64. The remote machine is behind a Linksys RV082, and I'm using UPnP to forward a remote port to the correct local port. This setup had been working fine for several months, and I can't think of any recent relevant changes that might have been made. Things I've already tried: Disabling unnecessary components of the network connection on the remote machine, until only IPv4 and Client for Microsoft Networks remain. Disabling TCP large send offload on both the remote and local machines. Confirming that the remote machine is not mentioned anywhere in any DMZ settings on the Linksys router. Confirming that there are no x509-related registry keys screwing things up (this is the suggested fix for a slightly different error anyway). These are the only solutions I've been able to find after about an hour of searching, and most of them apply to XP or Server 2003 in any case. If anyone could suggest something else, it would be much appreciated.

• Modify or disable Windows 8 swipe gestures on touchpad / laptop

  I have an ASUS G75VW laptop with a Synaptic touchpad (/trackpad). When I move my finger from one edge towards the middle (the swipe), Windows 8 will bring up different stuff. This is a problem because the area where I can actually move the mouse with my finger is too small (or, I mostly use the top left of the touchpad). So I often end up doing a swipe and bringing up some menu, or to do the swipe so slow that no menu is appearing but the mouse pointer is also not moving when I move my finger. Quite annoying. When swiping from left edge it earlier swapped apps like crazy. I disabled that, so now it only brings up the same menu as pressing win+tab (or some times the charms bar, I never know which). I could change that by: Win+I - Change PC settings - General - When I swipe from the left edge, switch directly to my most recent app I've tried Mouse settings in Control Panel, driver settings for my touchpad and searching for swipe and gestures on my computer (which was what led me to the setting above) with no luck. How can I disable the swipe gestures, or change what they do? Thanks.

• LAMP Setup, PHP's session_start permission denied

  I'm trying to set up a development environment for a legacy system that runs CentOS 4.8, PHP 4.3.9, and MySQL 4.1.22. I'm matching OS and software versions to keep the development server as close to the production server as possible. I also found where in /etc/php.ini this URL is set: session.save_path. My session.save_path is set to: session.save_path = /var/lib/php/session I've since changed the owner and the group of /var/lib/php/session and still have the same error.   I need to create a private cloud and I'm searching for the best setup. These are my 2 most important requirements 1. Disk and system redundant 2. Price / GB as low as possible The system is going to be used as backup setup which will receive data 24/7 over SFTP and rsync. High throughput is not that important. I'm planning to use glusterfs and consumer grade 4TB hard-drives. I have worked out 3 possible setups 3 servers with 11 4TB HDD Setup up a replica 3 glusterfs and setup each hard drive as a separate ext4 brick. Total capacity: 44TB HDD / TB ratio of 0.75 (33HDD / 44TB) 2 servers with 11 4TB HDD The 11 hard-drives are combined in a RAIDZ3 ZFS storage pool. With a replica 2 gluster setup. In my opinion setup 1 and 3 because there only the contents of 1 hard-drive needs to be copied over the network. Instead of setup 2 were the hard-drive needs te be reconstructed by reading the parity of all the other harddrives in the system. Will a zfs pool on 1 harddrive give me extra protection against for example bit rot? With setup 1 and 3 I can loose 2 systems and still be up and running with setup 2 I can only loose 1 system. When I use ZFS I can enable compression which will give me some extra storage.

  Hi, I've been having a problem for a while now with VMWare Workstaion. (Originally with 6.5, but now with 7.0 and 7.0.1 too). The problem occurs when I choose to shut down a guest. VMWare itself seems to hang. If I choose to shut down a guest that's opened full screen, and during the process I minimise the screen to work on other applications in the host, often (not all the time) when I return to the guest I have a 'greyed out' screen and the system becomes unresponsive. The host O/S still seems to be working, but I am unable to switch to other applications. (I can bring up the taskbar on the host and 'see' other applications and even switch to them, but VMWare still stays 'on top' being unresponsive). I can not terminate VMWare even when windows says that the application has become unresponsive and gives me the option to terminate. VMWare stays on top, and I'm forced to either shutdown, or log off and log back on in order to regain control of my computer. This happens with both Windows 7 and Windows Vista guest operating systems (32 bit), and I have had it happen on multiple host machines, and multiple guest machines too. Current Host: Windows 7 64 bit, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD, i7 Processor. I have been searching for more than 6 months for a solution but have found none, so finally decided to post here. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem (+or even how to minimize the VM so I can at least access any other applications and save work before forcing a logoff / reboot+) would be extrememly handly. If I know the correct keystrokes to save and close in an application on the host I can do this by task-switching to the desired app to save and close successfully, but I can't see what I'm doing because VMWare Workstation is still on-top 'greyed' out. • Firefox: Unload a tab manually

  Firefox has a setting "Don't load tabs until selected" (see How do I make Firefox 13 Load All My Tabs on Startup or when Resuming Reload). I like that behaviour. I am searching for a way to "deload"/deactivate a tab manually for a session (until I reload it). It should stop all running JavaScript functions and plugins (like Flash). The whole webpage content may disappear until I reload/re-activate the tab, but that is not a requirement. The title has to be displayed as tab label (like it is the case with the startup setting, too). The workaround would be to restart Firefox and don't switch to the tab I want to be deactivated. This is pretty annoying, of course. EDIT: Here is what I found so far (thanks, @bytebuster!) BarTab no longer being maintained (see why) BarTab Lite seems to miss this functionality from BarTab Dormancy experimental; comes with warning that it "may eat your session" Tab Mix Plus Feature request: Unload Tab feature Tab Utilites seems to offer this functionality only for automatic unloading Feature request: Add "unload tab" to tab context menu. UnloadTab removed from addons.mozilla.org (who knows why)

• How to take search query and append modifers to the end of it

  This is a greasemonkey question. What I'm trying to do is modify an old google discussions script. What were wanting to do is be able to take the google search query and add modifiers to the end of it. Like this: search query: "superuser" modifiers: inurl:greasemonkey+question end result: "superuser" inurl:greasemonkey+question The old script creates a new div within the "hdtb_more_mn" element which is where you get the new discussions tab. However, since the "tbm=dsc" option to do a discussion search has died, this script no longer works. Hence the need to add modifiers to your searches. I tried to edit the script, but it appends the modifiers to the end of the url which includes "&client=firefox-a&hs=8uS&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official". This means you're also searching for the above as well as your query, which doesn't work. I would like to be able to append the modifiers @ the end of the search querty, rather than the whole URL. I'm just not sure how to code it to where it adds the below "&tbm=" stuff within "discussionDiv.innerHTML" to the end of the query. The google search id seems to be, "gbqfq" for the search box, but I'm not sure how to add this id. • Document Map in MS Word 2007 going bonkers

  I'm working on a large project report in Microsoft Word 2007 and have been using the document map to generate the index. I have been carefully selecting the headers that need to be added to the document map but I saved the document and opened it up today to work on it - the document map has added whatever it pleases there. This is a temporary fix from a post that I found after extensive searching that works, but when I save and close the document and open it up again I face the same dilemma: I have noticed that when Word stuffs up the document map after opening the file, I can undo this by using the UNDO button. Word calls it ’Autoformat’. I have also fixed a file that has had the document map screwed permanently (i.e saved with it) by selecting all (CTRL+A),selecting the PARAGRAPH drop down menu in the HOME TAB and in the OUTLINE drop down box, selecting ’Body Text’. This removed all the problems and did not seem to affect my outline level paragraph headings. This is also another temporary fix but I have to be on my toes not to let Word auto format at the start of the document. I also can't afford to entirely turn off auto format as I need it. I’ve solved this problem for me. When you open the file, a progress bar at the bottom first says Opening (ESC to Cancel) and then it says Word is formatting the document (ESC to Cancel). If I cancel the second process, TOC fine. No cancelling, TOC screwed. Can anyone work out how to switch off the autoformatting? This is the post in which i found for the temporary fix
