• Converting ASP.NET MVC to n-Tiered Architecture

  I just built an application using ASP.NET MVC. The programmers at my company want to build all future modules using n-Tiered (Presentation Layer, Business Logic Layer, Data Access Layer) architecture. I am not the programmer and need to know why this makes sense? Do I have to completely rewrite the entire code or can it be converted? We are building an HRIS system with Business Intelligence. Somebody please explain why or why not this approach does or does not make sense.

• Cast Object to JTable?

  I am trying to implement a ListSelectionListener for some of my JTables. Simply (at the moment) the ListSelectionListener is supposed to simply return the text of the cell that was selected. My program design has several JTables and I would like to have one ListSelectionListener work for them all. In the valueChanged event of the ListSelectionListener I thought it was possible to do something like: private class SelectionHandler implements ListSelectionListener { public void valueChanged(ListSelectionEvent e) { JTable table = (JTable)e.getSource(); String data = (String) table.getValueAt(table.getSelectedRow(), 0); // Print data } } But when I do this I a ClassCastException error. Is there a way to do something like this? One solution I thought of was to compare the source of the event (e.getSource()) to all my JTables to see if they were equivalent (big if block) and then just calling .getValueAt inside that block but that would making the code in the future difficult if tables were to be added or removed.

• C# Script version of PyBinding for WPF

  I wrote a CSharpScriptBinding roughly equivalent to the PyBinding on CodePlex. It uses the C# script engine from http://www.csscript.net. After I wrote it, I kind of decided it might not really be something good to use. Although it caches the compiled script code as an already compiled Assembly, my concern is that I will have one temporary Assembly created each time I use the binding. Will this add up to a problem in the future? If so, maybe there is a way in the C# script engine that I don't know about to optimize this further...? Any thoughts to confirm my suspicion that this was just a bad idea (but useful excersise in learning more about bindings and converters)?

I checked my iPhone developer account, there I got that I can distribute my application via Adhoc Distribution up to 100 iPhone or iPod touch users. So I think it should be best way to distribute my application to that XYZ organization. On further searching I found that there is also an - iPhone Developer Enterprise Program, which is available to companies with 500 or more employees and a Dun & Bradstreet number. So I want to know - which will be the best way for me according to my requirements ? Also I want to know that say if I choose Adhoc distribution then is there any way for automatic up-gradation in it ie. to install new version of my application on user's iPhone or iPod without deleting the old version. • Audio input via HTML5?

  We have a VoIP application imVOX, and we are looking at various ways of expanding our reach. Part of that is writing an HTML5 application, but it requires the use of audio input from the browser (and also push to talk buttons from the browser, even if another app is focused). On the audio side, with HTML5 is there any way of taking audio input from the browser to compress and send to our servers? I know with Flash such is possible, but we're trying to avoid flash for mobile compatibility and generally looking toward the future.

• Running Long Process: Indexing 5GB docs with Lucene

  Situation:I have an ASP .NET application that will search through docs using Lucene. I want to run the initial indexing (the index will be incremental after the initial run so there wont be need to index the whole directory again in future). Currently, I have about 5GB of docs (45000files). Problem: My application times out before completing the process. I have altered the TimeOut like this: HttpContext.Current.Server.ScriptTimeout = 200000; but it still does not complete the process. How can I run the index?

• Batch backup a harddrive without modifying access times C#

  I'm trying to write a simple program that will backup my flash drive. I want it to work automatically and silently in the background, and I also want it to be as quick as possible. The thing is, resetting all the access times is useless to me, and something I want to avoid. I know I can read the access times and set them back, but I bet it will fail one day in the future. It would be much simpler to read the files without ever changing it. Also, what is the fastest way to do this? What differences would there be between, say, a flash drive and an external hard drive. I am writing this in C#, as it is the simplest way to do it and it will probably last more generations of Windows..

• Googlebot substitutes the links of Rails app with subdomain.

  I have this Rails app, with domain name abc.com. I am also having a separate subdomain for Piwik stats, in this subdomain stats.abc.com. Googlebot somehow listed some of the links with my subdomain too. http://abc.com/login http://stats.abc.com/login http://abc.com/signup http://stats.abc.com/signup The ones with stats will reference to the same page in the app, but are treated entirely different website. I have put in robots.txt in stats after this matter, but wondering if there is any appropriate way to block this because I may have new subdomains in future.   Hi guys, So I'm slowly tackling OO and Zend Framework and their MVC process in particular. I have an existing website and web-based calendar application that was designed by me, but coded by a different person and done procedurally. I understand that it will be very difficult for my application to ever be completely OO without a full re-write, and I'm fine with that. I have a lot of updates and modifications I want to do in the future, so I'm wanting to start replacing some of the basic components (login, authentication. etc) now, and continue to learn as I go. Again, I'm really a newbie at programming and OO. What I'm wondering is if I'm wanting to incorporate the Framework, then would I just first drop my whole site into the /public folder of the Framework and then start pulling functionality out from there?

But since the last 7 days I have been asked to work in java (J2SE 1.4) and I am working in that. and gradually I am finding interest in that. I want to learn more about it and since I am finding a lot of similarity between C# and Java(what ever I have gleaned + worked so far in those 7 days), I am planning to steer my career in that. But having spent for more than 2 years in C# and then moving to java, will it be a problem in future (say after 3/4 months) if I need to change my job.. I mean my most of the exp. lies in C# and just started JAVA. so how the technical panel will accept me if I need to change the platform? Thanks

  I am developing a Java Desktop Application. This app needs a configuration to be started. For this, I want to supply a defaultConfig.properties or defaultConfig.xml file with the application so that If user doesn't select any configuration, then the application will start with the help of defaultConfig file. But I am afraid of my application crash if the user accidentally edit the defaultConfig file. So Is there any mechanism through which I can check before the start of the application that whether the config file has changed or not. How other applications (out in the market) deal with this type of situation in which their application depends on a configuration file? If the user edited the config file accidentally or intentionally, then the application won't run in future unless he re-installs the application.

• Should I start to use CSS 3 & HTML 5?

  I fear this may sound subjective, sorry. I am wondering how "safe" it is to use CSS3 & HTML5 in a commercial app. I really want the power that they give, but am obviously wary that they are not completely standardized. If it helps any I can probably enforce the use of Chrome as the browser; I can likely offer FireFox as an alternative. I personally do not want to let the user choose their own browser and can probably enforce my choice in a corporate environment which is already heavily biased towards Google. I suppose that if I can enforce a Chrome only policy & carefully test before release then my only worry is that some "behaviour" may change in future. Would you risk it, or would play safe (or go with an alternative, such as a Java app, forgetting the browser)?

  I've searched everywhere, but I can't seem to find any help... I have some textboxes that are created dynamically via JS, so I need to bind all of their classes to an autocomplete. As a result, I need to use the new .live() option. As an example, to bind all items with a class of .foo now and future created: $('.foo').live('click', function(){ alert('clicked'); }); It takes (and behaves) the same as .bind(). However, I want to bind an autocomplete... This doesn't work: $('.foo').live('autocomplete', function(event, ui){ source: 'url.php' // (surpressed other arguments) }); How can I use .live() to bind autocomplete? • Training new employees on undocumented code

  Our company has a large codebase (2500+ classes/interfaces in just the core alone, many more in other projects) for our flagship software product. We've never really hired more than one developer at a time, so we don't have a real training process. We're going to be bringing in 2-5 more developers now, and probably more in the near future (to put things into perspective, we have 7 right now.) Obviously, we would like to get these guys up to speed as soon as possible. The catch - almost all of our classes (95%+) are completely undocumented. No javadoc, no design docs, basically completely undocumented. What strategies can we employ to bring the new developers up to speed? I'd like to consider situations that include the existing code getting documented, but it's possible management won't allow for the time to get that done, so I also must consider situations where that won't happen. Has anyone been there before? What worked well for you? Thanks!

• Storing cvs data for further manipulation using Ruby

  I am dealing with a csv file that has some customer information (email, name, address, amount, [shopping_list: item 1, item 2]). I would like work with the data and produce some labels for printing... as well as to gather some extra information (total amounts, total items 1...) My main concern is to find the appropriate structure to store the data in ruby for future manipulation. For now I have thought about the following possibilities: multidimensional arrays: pretty simple to build, but pretty hard to access the data in a beautiful ruby way. hashes: having the email as key, and storing the information in different hashes (one hash for name, another hash for address, another hash for shopping list...) (getting the cvs data in to a Database and working with the data from ruby??) I would really appreciate your advice and guidance!!

• Disable IPV6 on specific NIC via PowerShell using a Com Object on Windows Server 2008 R2?

  I need to script some Windows Server 2008 R2 builds, preferably in PowerShell. I need to disable or uncheck IPV6 on a specific NIC (the same NIC every time). Currently, I have to set it manually. I do not want to disable IPV6 completely for the entire server other things may use that in the future. Is there an object I can reference in a PowerShell command specifying my NIC "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection" and disable IPV6? Unfortunately, Group Policy is not an option says the boss. I've tried finding an appropriate WMI object via "PowerShell Scriptomatic" but failed to find the difference between an enabled setting versus disabled on the Intel NIC. Thanks in advance.

• What is the easiest way to send a Javascript array via JSON to PHP?

  I have a few arrays that I want to send to process with PHP. Using json2.js I will stringify the arrays like so: var JSONlinks = JSON.stringify(link_array); var JSONnotes = JSON.stringify(note_array); but then I'm confused. Do I need to use a XMLHttpRequest object? Is there another way? If that is the simplest way, could someone please just share the most basic instance of the code needed in order to send to PHP where I can then use JSON decode? I think it might help others in the future really. I'm currently using Jquery and I know there are many options out there for frameworks and each one may or may not make this process any easier. If you're using a framework in your reply please mention why you'd choose that framework rather than just javascript.

• new image makes http request even though cached?

  I have a javascript slide show that creates the next slide dynamically and then moves it into view. Since the images are actually sprites, the src is transparent.png and the actual image is mapped via background:url(.. in css. Everytime (well, most of the time) the script creates a new Element, Firefox makes an http request for transparent.png. I have a far-future expires header, and Firefox is respecting all other files' expiries. Is there a way to avoid these unnecessary requests. Even though the server is returning 304 unmodified responses, it would be nice if Firefox would respect the expiries on dynamically created images. I suspect that if I injected a simple string instead of using new Element, this might solve the problem, but I use some methods on Prototypes extended Element object, so I would like to avoid a bunch of html strings in my js file. This is a nit-picky question, but I'm working on front-end optimization now, so I thought I would address it. Thanks.

  I need to document a MS-Access application that was created, developed and maintained completely by a power-user over 10 years. This is an interesting situation because what they want is a manual so that a future developer can come in without prior domain knowledge and make changes to the frontend or the backend in a timely manner. There are a few questions on my mind for this little project: What is a good manual design creating application? Microsoft Word doesn't quite cut it. What kind of things would you, the developer, need to know in order to make changes to things like forms, reports, tables or other Access objects? Anything else I missed? Any pitfalls?

• Multiple operations depending on the type of the object passed

  Assuming I create a method which is passed an object and that method would perform an action depending on the object passed. How should I identify the object? I thought of using the class name to identify the object, but that may be impractical since I could easily change the class name of objects, and generate headaches during future development. Am I right? edit: for example, i have objects ball and bomb. if i have another object called wall, and the wall has the method to resolve collisions with the wall (e.g. the coordinates of the colliding ball and bomb) but have different logic depending on the colliding object (i.e. ball and bomb)

  I would like to build a simple reader app for the iPad 2 that would allow users to navigate/read via voice controls.   Is there a way to embed the last command's elapsed wall time in a Bash prompt? I'm hoping for something that would look like this: [last: 0s][/my/dir]$ sleep 10 [last: 10s][/my/dir]$ Background I often run long data-crunching jobs and it's useful to know how long they've taken so I can estimate how long it will take for future jobs. For very regular tasks, I go ahead and record this information rigorously using appropriate logging techniques. For less-formal tasks, I'll just prepend the command with time. It would be nice to automatically "time" every single interactive command and have the timing information printed in a few characters rather than 3 lines.

• What is the best way to maintain an entity's original properties when they are not included in MVC binding from edit page?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC view for editing a model object. The edit page includes most of the properties of my object but not all of them -- specifically it does not include CreatedOn and CreatedBy fields since those are set upon creation (in my service layer) and shouldn't change in the future. Unless I include these properties as hidden fields they will not be picked up during Binding and are unavailable when I save the modified object in my EF 4 DB Context. In actuality, upon save the original values would be overwritten by nulls (or some type-specific default). I don't want to drop these in as hidden fields because it is a waste of bytes and I don't want those values exposed to potential manipulation. Is there a "first class" way to handle this situation? Is it possible to specify a EF Model property is to be ignored unless explicitly set?
