• Windows 8 install from USB freezes

  I'm trying to install Windows 8 from an 8GB Kingston Data Traveler. I'm currently using the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to put the iso into the flash drive. It copies the files, but in the end it says it 'had a problem with bootsect' and could not make the flash drive bootable. This seems to be because my current system is Windows 7 32bits, and the bootsect.exe in the ISO is a 64-bit executable. Then I downloaded the 32-bit bootsect.exe and made the drive bootable by running: bootsect /nt60 E: /mbr Then I restarted and managed to boot via the flash drive, but now everything is very slow. It takes about two minutes for the initial black screen with the Windows logo and the spinner go away, then it goes to a purple-ish blank screen that stays on for about five more minutes and then it finally shows a dialog asking for the installation, date/time and keyboard languages. I input then, click "Install Now" and it takes about three more minutes with a "Setup is starting" screen. After that, the PC apparently reboots, the CPU fan speeds up considerably, and there's no video and nothing more happens even after more than ten minutes. What is happening? I already tried using another USB port and even installing from a Samsung G3 Station 2TB external hard disk, but the same thing happens. The file transfer speed to the Kingston drive was about only 3 megabytes per second.

• Remote Desktop Services Licensing - Does server have to have a RDS role?

  I recently set up a "micro" size Windows 2008 Datacenter server on Amazon AWS. My small group needs several concurrent RDS users to be able to access the machine. Without installing the "Remote Desktop Server" role, it allows 2 concurrent connections. I read on MS' website that in order to set up multiple users, we needed to install the RDS role. I did so, but now the application we are trying to share is running much slower than it was before. Prior to the role installation, it was taking about 5 seconds to open; now it is taking a few minutes to open -- without any other users logged on except me. My assumption is that the RDS role may be too much for this micro instance to handle, and currently, changing to another size instance is not an option (it may be possible later if we were to receive enough funding). This leads me to the following questions: 1) Is it a sensible assessment to assume that it is the RDS role is slowing things down, or are there other things that I could look at to speed it up? We are talking about a machine with ~600MB of memory. 2) If I revert back to the pre-RDS role, is there any legitimate way (in terms of purchasing RDS licenses) to get more than 2 concurrent desktops? I did read this, and am not questioning that the answerer is knowlegeable; but someone else may have some other experience. I am also making it clear that we want to do this in a legitimate way. Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided! EDIT: if it is helpful in answering the question, the application in question is a Lotus Approach database. Also, I am asking this from a technical perspective: not a legal one. I want to know if it is possible to install valid licenses without the RDS role.

  What is the easiest way to circle out something in a picture, like this example This is accomplished in Gimp: Here are the steps necesary to draw an empty ellipse without clearing the contents of the image below it. 1 - Layer New layer 2 - Make the layer to be the same size as the image and layer fill type to transparency. This should be already selected by default. 3 - On the toolbox select the ellipse select tool and make an ellipse 4 - Use the bucket fill tool to paint the ellipse with your desired color. 5 - Right click on it and go to Select Shrink... 6 - Type in how many pixels you want the border to be and click ok. 7 - Go to the menu and click Edit Clear. I feel it is very indirect, in the sense that first fill out the region enclosed by the ellipse, and then shrink the region to the boundary. I wonder if there is a quicker and more direct way to circle out something, such as by directly drawing the boundary? My OS is Ubuntu. What I was asking may be done outside of gimp, but must be by some software under Ubuntu. Thanks!

• Why does my ftp(e)s server fails like half of the time

  I have this discussion at work regarding our ftp server running via vsftpd. Initially, we have opted to serve ftpes instead of sftp because this seemed the most flexible and straightforward solution for our server to have secure file transmission. Afterwards, our ftp server seems to be a source of issues for our end users. Half of the time, users complain about not working ftp connections. I must say, i tested our FTP trough different infrastructures (=in the field, at random times at random places) and indeed, sometimes behind some configurations (=no idea how they are configured, because the 'field' testing), i recieve errors. Some of the are: Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing (filezilla) Furthermore, behind my basic home configuration, everything seems to be running fine. I (think I) did all the basic configuration checks (passive mode?, firewall for all ports?, ...) and can't seem to find the source. Being a bunch of techies at our small office, yet knowing nothing about infrastructure, some start suggesting that ftps protocol could be the source of issues. ("No, i only knew sftp so far" "Ftps is not widespread"). I, however, strongly doubt this hypothesis, since reading around on the www, asking questions on serverfault, everyone seems to deny this. • Euro character messed up during FTP transfer

  My customer is using a very outdated ecommerce management system on my hosting service. For that product, no support is being provided anymore by the vendor. Brief explanation: the shop website, that claims to run under LAMP stack, is built by an old Visual Basic Windows application running on MS Access. The user constructs the shop, defines the HTML template, adds products and categories, etc. Then the VB exe builds the PHP pages (one for each template page) and the SQL script to run on MySQL. It also uploads everything via FTP and runs the installation/upgrade script on its own. The problem Browsing the website, many products' descriptions are cut before the euro sign. • Windows VPN client connect on different port

  Scenario: Two Windows Server 2003 machines running RRAS VPNs. The firewall port forwards 1723 to one of those machines for normal remote access. I'd like to find a way to connect to the second machine as well. Not because I need to but just because it's the sort of thing I reckon should be possible but can't figure out how to do. Is it possible to have the Windows PPTP VPN client (on XP in this instance) connect on a port other than 1723? If so, I can simply port forward another port to the second server. I've done a fair bit of Googling over the last few days and have only found others asking the same question but no answers. I have of course tried to add a port number in the host name or IP connection box, in various formats, but to no avail. While this might be possible with a third part client I'm really only interested in whether or not it can be done with the Windows built-in client and if so how?. Perhaps there's a registry hack I'm not aware of?

• Outbound ports to allow through firewall - core requirements

  This question was asked before, but in a rather general way. I'm asking more specifically based on my current requirements. We have a number of remote offices made up of a bunch of PCs and an ASA 5505 which is used as firewall and VPN termination point. In the offices we share the internet connection with one or more other organisations over whom we have very little control, asides from the config on the ASAs. For a bunch of reasons I'd like to lock down these ASA 5505s to only allow outbound traffic to ports used by applications we know we need. I'm putting a standard config to roll out to all the ASAs, and if we need to open up ports for the other orgs we can do it on request. But I want to leave open the most commonly required ports so we can get up and running without waiting on other folks technical staff to get back. I plan to allow the following TCP ports to support email and web access, which I know everyone will need: POP3 (110 and 995) HTTP (80 and 443) IMAP4 (143 and 993) SMTP (25 and and 465) The question really is, what other ports do I need to leave open to allow for "normal" working? I've seen UDP port 53 for DNS as one. Are there any others that would be worth opening up? Just to note - I'll also be setting up monitoring systems to keep an eye on the ports we do allow. Any of the above could be misused of course. We'll also back all this up with signed agreements. But I'm aiming for a technical solutions where I don't have to start out with the full requirements of everyone we share connections with. See also: outbound ports that are always open

• What causes a switch port to receive data not destined for it?

  We are having an intermittent fault which is effecting one of our control systems on one of our HP Procurve switches. For some reason, this PLC (10mbit port - 192.168.6.56) which is attached directly to the HP Switch intermittantly start's receiving data which is not destined for it. The data is being sent from a Thecus NAS with latest firmware (192.168.6.218) to a physical IBM Server running Win2003R2 and SAP (192.168.6.225). The problem does not just send to this server, it has been to other physical servers in the past too, but always from the Thecus NAS. I am using a monitor port to wireshark what is going in/out of the PLC - normally there would be about 1mb in/out per 2 or 3 minutes - only a server asking the state of the coils. When the problem occurs, there is a flood of data being put onto the PLC line - in this captured instance, about 67mb in less than a minute. Due to this, there is no way that the PLC can be queried as the port is effectively DOSed, in turn killing part of our factory. I know that having Production on the same vlan as IT is not a good idea - I agree, however it cannot be changed at the moment (will have to wait 3 months), as well as the problem has only started happening in the last 3 months. Here is a screen cap of one of the packets being sent from the Thecus NAS which was captured from the PLC port on the HP Switch: And there are over 700 of these in this one 1024kb file. • Is this DVD drive broken? Brand new, i need help convincing

  I am asking bc i know dell is going to give me a problem. How do i know if my DVD is broken on my laptop? i burnt 4 DL disc and they ALL failed, i called and dell suggested roxio. I used it and burnt 1 disc without error and the 2nd disc with an error. With both apps there were no 'problems' during the burning process only failed on the verification process. Some of these bad disc dont work on other PCs and one locks up windows when i click a specific file. Does that sound like a broken burner to you guys? when i called dell they told me since it can read disc properly 100% of the time and software doesnt fail in the burning process its not a broken drive _. They forward me to software support who demand a fee (i think $100) to help me fix my software. I am annoyed bc i dont want to be on the phone for them to watch me burn a dvd and since i burned it once correctly i dont want to happen to burn correctly again to have them say they solved my problem (doing nothing) and charge me refusing to refund. -edit- The errors i got were 1) the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error 2) Windows locking up when opening 1 specific file 3) Cannot copy : Data error (crc) NOTE: the file that causes the problems are random every disc

• Help in recovering partition

  Okay so i had one NTFS partition and i wanted to resize it, but while resizing it with partition magic some error occurred and now i am not able to enter in my partition anymore. I have slackware 13 also and i tried mounting the partition from there but it didn't succeed. One friend of mine came to my house with some live-cd os called backtrack3 and when he booted from cd, he was able to mount the damaged partition - and was able to read/write on it anywhere. I saw my files, they are all there, so nothing's erased just the partition is somehow damaged. But strange thing was that from backtrack we weren't able to mount some of the working partitions of my comp, and we could mount the damaged one. So i am asking for some help here: My files are all there, and i saw them from backtrack. What can i do to fix the partition so it would be usable from windows/slackware again ? Please tell me anything you've got because i have some important data on it. Thank you.

• retain last used path to location for saving files in Windows 7

  I am using Microsoft Office 2010 and Windows 7 on a Dell PC. I am opening a bunch of MSWord files one at a time, copying data tables therein, pasting the data into Excel and saving the Excel files as comma delimited text files. I am creating a separate Excel file for each MSWord file. The path to the folder containing the saved comma-delimited files is quite long, something like this: c:\users\me\aa\bb\cc\dd\ee\ Every time I open Excel and save a new comma-delimited file I have to re-navigate the entire path (c:\users\me\aa\bb\cc\dd\ee). In the past Windows seemed to remember the last used path, saving a lot of tedious key-strokes. In fact, I think Windows did this for me as recently as last week, albeit on a different computer. Can I apply a setting in Windows somewhere asking it to offer the last used path as a default when saving files so I do not have to re-navigate the entire directory structure to save each new comma-delimited file? If I can, how so? Where is the option for specifying that setting? Thank you for any help.

• SSL Mail server connection times out on send()

  When trying to programmatically send an email from a website of mine, with PHP Pear Mail package with SSL connection, PEAR:Mail replies the following : Failed to connect to example.blabla.net:PORT [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: connection timed out (code: -1, response: )] I looked for similar questions on SO and SF, all the answers asking the OP to test a request on telnet or ssh in command line. So, that is what I did and here is what happens : $ ssh -l myusername -p PORT example.blablabla.net _ Here, '_' in the second line means that NOTHING happens. Indefinitely, which seems coherent with the timeout message I had from PEAR:Mail. So PEAR:Mail seems out of cause. But, what I have to tell you is that yesterday, it just worked. Connection was properly established, mails were properly sent, etc. Just today, it doesn't work anymore and I absolutely don't know why. I restarted Apache (in case an extension was broken), restarted mail services, etc. Still. No effect. Before yesterday (when it worked) and today (when it doesn't anymore), I just didn't touch the server and did nothing on it, simply because I took a day off to write some blog post! Have anyone of you encountered similar problem ? The problem seems quite common, judging after some googling, but the solution doesn't. Thanks for any help ! • XBMC remote control key repeat

  Those who have used XBMC with a WiFi remote, such as an Android or iOS device with the official XBMC remotes, have probably seen this at one time or another: your remote stops working, when you press a key, that key is repeated very fast. Sometimes you can break the key repeat loop by pressing that same key again. Sometimes (as this particular morning) you can not. This problem has existed for literally years (it even occurs on the old XBOX only builds) but there seems to be no definite explanation as to what is causing it. I am asking for a workaround. (If you Google, you can find threads were people are ridiculed for bringing up this problem, which is one reason I ask here instead of on the official forums. Also the fact that this problem has persisted for so many years.) I am running, right now, XBMCBuntu Live Eden and the latest official iOS remote. Although, I have seen this problem on all combinations of remotes and XBMC versions I have tried over the years, which are many. (XBMC on Windows, Linux, OSX, remotes on Android and iOS.) Link to bug #136 for the Android remote. It's marked as "fixed" as of client version 636, but the problem is seen again in rev 730. Go figure. There is something fundamentally wrong with how keypresses are sent from the various remotes to XBMC, since this problem is seen across time, XBMC versions and iOS/Android.

• Nginx and Wordpress side-by-side with static directory alias?

  I'm a Nginx novice, but I have it set up with Wordpress Multisite (subdirectories) and php-fpm, and it's working great as is. This lets me set up Wordpress sites off the web root: domain.com/site1 - a Wordpress network single site, which renders as expected. domain.com/site2 - ditto etc. Concurrently, I can easily create static files in the web root that don't conflict or interact with Wordpress, and they are also rendered normally. domain.com/hello.html - rendered normally domain.com/hello.php - rendered normally, including php processing domain.com/static/hello.php - rendered normally (along as "static" isn't a WP single site name) What I'd like to do, and this is where I'm out of my depth with nginx.conf, is create a root directory domain.com/static and put static sites in there domain.com/static/site3 domain.com/static/site4 and have Nginx check the request that comes into the root request comes in for: domain.com/site3 and before handing off to Wordpress, check to see if it exists in the /static folder checks: domain.com/static/site3 - static content exists there and if so, serves that content while maintaining the root URI. serves: domain.com/site3 (with content from domain.com/static/site3) if not, it lets Wordpress check if /site3 is a Wordpress single network site as it does now, and the process continues normally. In nginx.conf, in the server section, I start with this try_files rule: location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?q=$uri&$args; } I then include a bunch of Wordpress specific rules as identified at http://codex.wordpress.org/Nginx under the subdirectory section. I can see that rewrite rules might take care of it easily, but in my experimentation I've only achieved a bunch of looping (/static/static/static, etc.) and managed to bypass Wordpress if the looping stopped. Sorry if this is a very long-winded way of asking a simple question, but I'm definitely learning some of this stuff for the first time. Thanks!

• Remote Desktop connection to vista vs. xp

  I am trying to log into my work computer remotely. I am using Windows 7 on my laptop. I have created a vpn connection to the network, and I am doing a remote desktop connection directly to the ip of my box (192.168.xxx.yyy). If I do a remote connection to a different box, running xp, it goes into remote desktop mode immediately and I see the windows login dialog as I am used to seeing. If I try remoting to my box, which is running vista, I do not see the remote desktop mode, but an additional dialog on my local machine asking for my credentials. It defaults in my local username. It allows me to log in as a different user, but the domain it has is still my local domain, not my work domain, so none of my usernames or passwords work. There doesn't appear to be a way to change the domain. Trying to hit several more boxes, it appears to act differently on xp and vista target machines. I feel like this must be a configuration issue, but I am not sure what the problem is. Any idea on how I can connect?

• Laptop CPU fan not working properly

  My laptop's CPU fan is suddenly acting very bizarre, and I am at a loss for what to do so I am asking for some help. Specifically, the fan is not even starting to spin until the CPU reaches 60 degrees Celsius (checked through HWmonitor). Once it is on, however, it properly stays on even when the CPU gets back to idle temps around 38 Celsius. Before, the fan was simply starting with the computer and staying on like normal. I've checked this for consistency both by allowing cold boots to ramp up temperature to 60 Celsius (the slow climb also causing the laptop to become unreasonably warm near the heatsink), and also running Prime95 immediately to kickstart the fan (this works every time). The fan seems to be stationary when turning the computer on from either sleep or shutdown. The fan will start at POST very briefly, and then stop completely. I've checked the BIOS for a SmartFan setting but haven't found any. I've opened the case to check for dust or debris and have not found anything (I applied some canned air to the area just in case). The laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E430 and the CPU is an Intel Core i5 3210m @ 2.5 GHz. Any advice would really be appreciated.

  Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my capacity planning? Now I habe small cluster with total of 8 nodes. 6 of them are computing nodes (apache and vmware) and 2 nodes are for storage. 2 storage nodes are identical. Each storage server is linux box with 8 x 1Tb WD RE4 in soft raid 10. 1st box is master and 2nd is slave. Data is mirrored with DRDB. We export NFSv4 shares to Apache (for document root) and iSCSI to Vmware. Now all is working pretty good and stable. But it will be soon time to upgrade our system. I have been thinking of Lustre. Does some one has any real experience with Lustre or NFS medium clusters? Will it be good idea just to upgrade server and change hdd's to 3Tb ? With NFS we will always have only 2 servers to maintain (one primary and one slave). Thanks. QUESTIONS: 1) Does some one used Lustre? In production? I have seen a lot of info about how it is hard to setup Lustre because you need to compile own kernel and patches. It's answers from newbies. Is there some one who has used Lustre for some period of time? 2) About disk upgrades - it's only description of strategy. I'm not asking if it is enough 3Tb or not. I just ask if it is right just to replace hdds instead of adding new server (like with Lustre) Thanks again.

• Removing all traces of GNU java and openjdk and replacing with Sun JDK

  I have installed latest Sun JDk. But when I do: java -version I still got OpenJDK version. So I completely removed OpenJDK. But now when I do: java -version I get even older GNU java 1.5 something libgcj. So I completely removed that too but it was asking to remove bunch of dependent apps like OpenOffice.org Writer etc. Even though I need the writer, I let it go because I do not want ever to see the face of any GNU java on my linux. So everything related to GNU java is removed. Luckily I am able to start Eclipse and it works fine and start normally (apparently using the installed Sun JDK which is what I want). But now when I run java -version I get bash: /usr/bin/java: No such file or directory Now what I need to do so that when I open any terminal window and enter java -version I should get Sun JDK version? Sun JDK is installed in /usr/java/jdk1.6.021. I also have symlinks: /usr/java/latest and /usr/java/defaults pointing to sun jdk.

• Am I obliged to use ipv6 tunnel services if I want to be able to use it?

  I was looking for configuring Slackware to use ipv6 but all instruction I found speak about using an ipv6 tunnel that encapsulate ipv6 request into ipv4 packet and send them to an external router that extracts ipv6 request and sends a reply (or, at least, this is what I understood). Is that necessary? Isn't there a way to configure a pure ipv6 system? If yes, could you please point me to a guide that clearly explain how to enable ipv6 without this trick? I would like to configure my Slackware desktop at first, and then do the same with my Centos server. EDIT: maybe I gave you too few information. Sorry. • Output current with Teensy++ 2.0 (arduino-based hardware)

  I am working on a project with a Teensy++ 2.0 for testing, eventually the goal is to use a Teensy 2.0 (info on both available here) and mount it onto a robot R/C car along with a Raspberry Pi. I have been able to use and test one of the very cheap distance sensors that use ultrasound, which requires very little current. I was trying to power a motor, I don't know exactly what kind of motor but I assume a very low-power one which is what comes with the R/C car cheapo, but nothing is happening. When I plug the motor to GROUND and +5V it runs fine, but when I use GROUND and one of the GPIO pins then nothing happens with the motor. The same GPIO pins were tested to successfully power and run the ultrasound sensor, so the board is fine. My suspicion is that the GPIO pins don't output enough current to power the motor, but my knowledge of electronics is rather scarce (I am a computer scientist, not an electrical engineer). So please forgive me if I am asking something obvious or plain stupid, but does the board not have enough power to power the motor? If so, I could try to use a second power supply that would go straight into the motor and use the GPIO as a gate to turn that power on and off; would such thing work? Is there a better design that could be used?

• Automatically reconnect to VPN when it drops

  I use OpenVPN to connect to a VPN service. I will often use it unattended and on occasion I have come back to find the service disconnected and GUI asking for login credentials. If the connection is disconnected by the service, and not me, I'd like it to attempt to reconnect automatically with no intervention from me, and ideally, if the reconnection attempt initially fails, keep attempting to do so at regular intervals until a connection is successfully. Is there anyway to configure OpenVPN to do this? If not, can someone suggest a way of doing it with scripting (I use Windows)? Failing that, can anyone suggest a VPN solution that does this? The VPN provider supports PPTP as well as OpenVPN. I have configured OpenVPN to read login credentials from a file. Below is my config script. • Very high Magento/Apache memory usage even without visitors (are we fooled by our hosting company?)

  I am no server guy and we have issues with our speed so I come here asking for advise. We have a VPS with 2 cores and 2gb of RAM at a Magento specialized hosting company. Over the course of the last weeks our site speed has gotten worse, even though our store is new, has less than 1000 SKUs and not even 100 visitos a day. At magespeedtest.com we only get 1.87 trans/sec @ 2.11 secs each with a mere 5 concurrent users. Our magento log files are clean, we have no huge database tables or anything like that. When we take a look at our server real time stats, we see that the memory usage jumped up from about 34% to 71% and now 82% in just a few days in idle, with no visitors on the site. Our hosting company said that we do not need to worry about that as it`s maybe related to mysql which creates buffers (which are maybe not even actually being used) and what is important is CPU and swap - stats are ok here. They also said that the low benchmark scores are caused by bad extensions or template modifications on our side. We are not sure if we can trust that statement as we only have 4 plugins installed (all from aheadworks and amasty which are known to be one of the best magento extension developers). Our template modifications are purely html and css, no modifications to the php code. Our pagespeed is ranked with 93/100 in firebug and Magento is properly configured, so the problem really just gets obvious when there are a handful of users on the site at the same time. Can anyone confirm our hosting`s statement about memory usage and where can I start looking for a solution?

• Notepad++ FTP best solution

  Hi, I use Notepad++ for more than 2 years now, and there's only 1 thing that it needs for me to be perfect: a actually-working-ftp-plugin. It has an ftp plugin, written by someone that meanwhile left the project (by meanwhile I mean a long time ago), and since then nobody had courage to improve it. The problem is that it does't handle connections very well. Sometimes it lost connection with the server and literally "blocks", others don't save the files properly, other only load half of the ftp files, etc etc .. My question is: Is there a way to use ftp and notepad++ (without using its build-in ftp or a ftp client like filezilla)? I've tried using NetDrive, but it gets stuck sometimes (makes the editor crash), and everytime the temporary file is refreshed by windows / NetDrive, it will load the new file without asking and skip the pointer to the end of the file (very very very annoying). In case you know how to make the built-in notepad++ ftp plugin work at 100%, I'd be much more happy! I'd like to have some feedback from you guys :) (I'm using Windows Vista) Thanks in advance!

• Need some help figuring out BB4Win or any of its varieties: does it replace windows explorer?

  I don't really care too much about replacing original Windows the desktop, taskbar and system tray. I really dislike the new Win7/Vista Windows Explorer: Screenshot here (just to make sure there's no confusion) So, what I'm trying to figure out is whether BB4Win or its plugins have a replacement for it. The bb4win website pretty much doesn't make sense to me. I'm using Win7 64 bit. Also, off-topic ... I was looking at a related question on this site here: Good Windows shell replacement Why can't I add comments? I wanted to ask the same question I'm asking now as a comment under the answer given by Molly7244, the person who answered with suggesting BB4Win. But there seems to be no way to add new comments anywhere! Why? Am I missing something? I don't quite understand the weird way this site is set up... I'm used to the more typical forum format. Sorry.
