• Can't complete dropbox installation from behind proxy

  Problem: My PC on campus sits behind a proxy (requiring authentication) and I can't setup Dropbox. I am convinced that this is a proxy issue as I can't setup Ubuntu one either (but I don't use Ubuntu One so that is not a problem). I have looked at the Ubuntu One fix but it seems to be to modify settings explicitly related to Ubuntu One. I can install the nautilus-dropbox package (compiled from source and from .deb package from website and from software centre) but once I click OK from the "Dropbox Installation" dialog box (prompting me to download the proprietary daemon) the installation just freezes with the OK button pressed. When I look at its process in System Monitor its waiting channel is inet_wait_for_connect. I have set the following proxy directives thus far: Added mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80 information to network proxy settings under network in settings. Added http_host and http_port variables under gconf-editor-system-proxy Added 'host', 'authentication_password' 'authentication_user' and ticked 'user authentication' and 'use_http_proxy' under gconf-editor-system-http_proxy Added export http_proxy="http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/" to /etc/bash.bashrc Added Acquire::http::proxy "http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/"; to /etc/apt/apt.conf (which is what I imagine is letting Software Center retrieve packages). (where ** is my password) I have also added the equivalent ftp and https lines for the above entries. I get the internet fine and Software Centre can download packages but thats it. Related issues: The software centre can't fetch reviews (but can download packages). When trying to add an online account in Gnome 3 a dialog pop up appears with "Error getting a Request Token: Cannot connect to proxy (proxy.waikato.ac.nz)" Updates: After some time (10mins ish) Dropbox shows an error dialog box that reads: Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set you http_proxy environment variable. Is there a way I can see what environment variables are currently set?

• apache2 is making my amazon ec2 unavailable, any ideas?

  I have a web server running on a EC2 c1.medium intance. The instance is running on ubuntu, with apache2 and mysql.The ubuntu and apache version are the next; Ubuntu DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=11.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 11.04" Apache2 Server version: Apache/2.2.17 (Ubuntu) Server built: Feb 22 2011 18:33:02 Sometimes randomly, my server "hangs up", I cannot connect to it using normal web access or ssh access. If I reboot the instance it reboots fine, the amazon system log doesn't show anything weird, but the problem persists The only way to solve it its stopping the instance, and start it again. • Bad style programming, am I pretending too much?

  I realized to work in an office with a quite bad code base. The base library implemented in years and years is quite limited, and most of that code is, honestly, horrible. Projects developed in the office are very large. Fine. I could define me a "perfectionist" (but often I'm not), and I thought to refactor an application (really a portion), which need a new (complex) feature. But, today, I really realized that it's not possible to refactor that application modules with a reasonable time (say, 24/26 hours, respect the avaialable time for the task, which is 160 hours). I'm talking about (I am a bit ashamed to say) name collisions, large and frequent cut & paste code, horrible and misleading naming, makefiles without dependencies (!), application login is spread randomly across many different sources, dead code, variable aliasing, no assertion, no documentation, very long source files, bad/incomplete include file definition, (this is emblematic!) very frequent extern declaration of variables and functions, ... I'm sure to continue ... buffer overflows because sprintf, indentation (!), spacing, non existent const modifier usage. I would say that every source line was written quite randomly when needed, without keeping in mind some design (at least, the obvious one). (Am I in hell?) The problem arises when the application is developed by a colleague of mine. I felt very frustrated. So, I decided to expose the "situation" to my colleague; at the end, that was a bad idea. He is justified in saying that "the application was developed in haste, so it is natural that it is written vaguely; you are wasting time to think and implement an elegant implementation" .... I'm asking too much from my colleague to write readable code, which is managed and documented? I expect too much in not having to read thousands of lines of code to understand how a particular logic?

• How to keep word document, html and pdf documentation aligned

  Is there a way to write documentation in a WYSIWYG editor which can then export into HTML, WORD and PDF and keep copies synchronized? This documentation are mostly technical notes and some contextual help for some softwares so they must contain images and some styling, they are not programmer's documentation (API list or functions list) for which probably a program like Javadoc or Doxygen would be the best choice. For example how do companies with hundreds different software lines and thousands of programmers deal with this? I have several solutions but they all seem lacking in some aspect: Latex/Tex : very good pdf and html export, not very user friendly and no full-blown WYSIWYG editor available. LibreOffice/OpenOffice : full blown WYSIWYG editor however html export not so good (need to edit manually exported html which needs to be maintained separately ) Mediawiki or any other wiki : could be keeping documentation in wikitext format, so html is automatically generated, pdf exportation is quite good with many available plugins. Again however need some formation for the staff to use it and need to setup a server for this. Notice I'm not asking for software A vs software B, I'm asking for general advice, big companies procedures for documentation and yes some software product names if available.

• How do I create a 2.5d parallax effect?

  I have a decent background in 3D graphics and programming, but I'm new to game development. I'm currently exploring different possibilities and I really want to make an RPG game. I was thinking about classic 2D isometric view, but I really love how Diablo 2 looks and feels to play. My question is - how can I achieve Diablo 2's parallax effect? Everything looks hand drawn with baked lights and shadows and looks awesome, but when you move around you notice some perspective. For example, let's say that I drew a big hall with columns in Photoshop with an orthographic perspective (classic pixel art style, just parallel lines). How would I give parallax effect to this scene when the character moves around? If I use camera-facing sprites for everything it would probably look OK in the distance, but it would be really fake when a character comes close to a column (cylinder) for example. Any suggestions? • File saving disabled 'Saving has been disabled by system admin'

  I have coded my own html website recently, and today wished to add a Google calender object to it. I have not put this website on the web because it is for my own personal use and I can't buy a domain. So I just have a folder on my pc that I load the index.html from now and then. As I was saying, today I got an error while trying to save the Google calender object in. I am system admin on my PC, in fact no one else uses but me, except when I have friends round, but for once my PC seems to think I'm some standard account user, because I couldn't save. I thought of clicking close and seeing if it came up with save as, but it didn't, it said 'Are you sure you want to close without saving?' or something along the lines of that, and 'Saving has been disabled by your system admin.' I couldn't do anything. I tried looking at the settings of the file, and it had me as read only in one of the selections, so I changed that to read & write, but to no avail. I did not save as root when I last edited the file, so I don't get what's going on. Help! P.S. This is on Ask Ubuntu not Superuser because it is on my Ubuntu PC and it appears to be a problem with Ubuntu not root or hardware.

• Mixing XNA and silverlight gives wierd graphics

  I making a small 3dgame which is made as a Silverlight and XNA app, but when I draw the sprites the graphics becomes all wierd. • Low-level GPU code and Shader Compilation

  Bear with me, because I will raise several questions at once. I still feel, though, that overall this can be treated as one question that may be answered succinctly. I recently dove into solidifying my understanding of the assembly language, low-level memory operations, CPU structure, and program optimizations. This also sparked my interest in how higher-level shading languages, GLSL and HLSL in particular, are compiled and optimized, as well as what formats they are reduced to before machine code is generated (assuming they are not converted directly into machine code). After a bit of research into this, the best resource I've found is this presentation from ATI about the compilation of and optimizations for HLSL. I also found sample ARB assembly code. This sort of addressed my original curiosity, but it raised several other questions. The assembler code in the ATI presentation seems like it contains instructions specifically targeted for the GPU, but is this merely a hypothetical example created for the purpose of conceptual understanding, or is this code really generated during shader compilation? If so, is it possible to inspect it, or even write it in place of the higher-level syntax? My initial searches for an answer to the last question tell me that this may be disallowed, but I have not dug too deep yet. Also, along the same lines, are GLSL shader programs compiled into ARB assembly code before machine code is generated, and is it possible to write direct ARB assembly? Lastly, and perhaps what I am most interested in finding out: are there comprehensive resources on shader compilation and low-level GPU code? I have been unable to find any thus far. I ask simply because I am curious :)

• How do i disable intel graphics in a hybrid graphics setup?

  Hi, I have a Dell Vostro 3700 version A10. The relevant bits from lspci -v | grep VGA are: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 18) and 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 330M] (rev a2) so as you can see this is one of those hybrid graphics laptops. Now, I have no interest in any kind of switching. I would like to completely disable the Intel Graphics thats on the processor. I checked in the xorg.log file and it shows that the intel card is in use. from lsmod i see it uses the i915 module. I tried blacklisting that module in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but that didn't really work because i still couldn't use the nvidia card for display. I wish there was a BIOS option to disable, but there isn't. Some people have also suggested changing the SATA mode to compatibility, but that does not work either in this case as the intel vga controller still shows up in lspci I tried setting the busid manually in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but it still didn't work. It gave me an error that said something along the lines of screen not detected. any bits of xorg.log that you'd like me to attach? So what I am looking for is some solution that allows me to completely disable the use of the intel vga controller. if it was blocked somehow it'd be nice. as if it were not present. Any suggestions? I am desperate here actually. Because I cannot use the HDMI port right now on my laptop for that reason. My guess is this applies to desktops that also have Core i5 processors with onchip graphics as well as dedicated graphics cards. How would they go about solving the problem?

• How to implement a birds eye view of 2D Grid Map using Android

  I'm a true beginner with using the android platform and I'm having difficulties on implementing a 2D grid system for a tower defense type game. Where I can place towers on a specific tile and enemies will be able to traverse through tiles etc. What I would like is a practical explanation of how I could tackle this. A step by step guide for dummies. This is what I believe are the necessary steps to take, I think I might be wrong but I hope someone could help me out. Calculate the Width and Height of the view I'm working with. Based on that, determine the number of tiles required and their dimensions, (Still not sure how I would do this) Create each tile as a Rectangle object and draw these rectangle on a canvas I would really be grateful if someone could steer me in the right direction on how to implement a 2D Grid Map using android. I hope the answer to this questions helps the TRUE beginners out there like me. I have looked at the following links below yet I still feel that I don't trully understand what's going on. • Screwed up terminal after modifying bashrc

  I ended up screwing up my terminal, while setting up Sbt for the Coursera Scala course. I can't summon gedit (or anything else) anymore. I get the following error: Command 'gedit' is available in '/usr/bin/gedit' The command could not be located because '/usr/bin' is not included in the PATH environment variable. • The value of an updated specification

  I'm at the tail end of a large project (around 5 months of my time, 60,000 lines of code) on which I was the only developer. The specification documents for the project were designed well early on, but as always happens during development, some things have changed. For example: Bugs were discovered and fixed in ways that don't correspond well with the spec Additional needs were discovered and dealt with We found areas where the spec hadn't thought far enough ahead and had to change some implementation Etc. Through all this, the spec was not kept updated, because we were lean on resources (I know that's a questionable excuse). I'm hoping to get the spec updated soon when we have time, but it's a matter of convincing management to spend the effort. I believe it's a good idea, but I need some good reasoning; I can't speak from very much experience because I'm only a year and a half out of school. So here are my questions: What value is there in keeping an updated spec? How often should the spec be updated? With every change made that might affect it, just at the end of development, or something in between? EDIT to clarify: this project was internal, so no external client was involved. • Is it wise to ask about design decisions made on a product during an interview?

  I've been thinking about interview questions lately and I've been reflecting on bad interview experiences I've had in the past. One of particular note is where I had asked the interviewer why the team chose to use Spring over EJB3 in their product. The interviewer pretty much tore my face off, yelling "Because Spring is not the be all and end all of Java software development, do you want this job or not?". In response to this, I told him that this probably wasn't the job for me and I walked out the interview. He told me at the start of the interview that they had high stuff turnover, the product had gone from Modula 3 to Perl to Java then after asking him a technical question, he went in flames. It seemed obvious to me that he was toxic to the company with that kind of attitude. Question: Is it a good idea to probe on architectural choices taken in an interview? If not, why? From my own point of view, an interview is a two-way process. If the interviewers are testing me on my technical skills, I've got every right to ask them the same questions to 1) Figure out what their mindset and attitudes towards developing software solutions are and 2) To figure out if there are in line with how I would approach problems of that kind. It's very possible that the interviewer who got angry was a bad interviewer and forgot that an interview is a two-way process. If I was asked this, I would have simply said something along the lines of wanting to leverage the container more, but I certainly wouldn't have tried to put him in a state of meek capitulation. The interviewer in question was the lead developer in the team.

  When I use apt to get a package, I have been receiving the same error message. Here is an example trying to install wicd (which is already installed): Reading package lists... • Apache HTTPS ProxyPass certificate location

  I'm trying to set up an Apache server that uses ProxyPass to pass HTTPS requests on to another server. Let's call the proxy server ALPHA and the target server BETA. ALPHA does not run HTTPS, but BETA does. I had to copy the SSL certificate from BETA to ALPHA and add these lines to the host specification on ALPHA: SSLEngine on SSLCertificateKeyFile /usr/local/ssl/private/BETA_private.key SSLCertificateFile /usr/local/ssl/crt/BETA_public.crt SSLCertificateChainFile /usr/local/ssl/crt/BETA_intermediate.crt Now the system works. But I have a feeling that I have done something wrong or unnecessary. I have the web site's private key and certificate lying on both ALPHA and BETA. Is that necessary? Should I have done it differently?

• How do I properly set up and secure a production LAMP Server?

  It's very hard to find comprehensive information on this subject. Either I found short tutorials on how you perform the installation, as simple as "apt-get install apache2", or outdated tutorials. So I was hoping I could get some professional information from my fellow members of the Ubuntu community :D I have performed a normal Ubuntu Server 11.04 with LAMP, SAMBA and SSH installed through the system installation. But I'm having some trouble setting up virtual hosts and to make the system secure enough to expose the server to the web. I've somewhat followed this tutorial this far. I have 3 sites in /etc/apache2/sites-available which all looks like this except for different site names: <VirtualHost example.com> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost ServerAlias www.edunder.se DocumentRoot /var/www/sites/example CustomLog /var/log/apache2/www.example.com-access.log combined </VirtualHost> And I have enabled them with the command a2ensite so I have symbolic links in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled. My /etc/hosts file has these lines: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 Ubuntu.lan Ubuntu 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost example.com www.example.com 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost example2.com www.example2.com 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost example3.com www.example3.com And I can only access one of them from the browser (I have lynx installed on the server for testing purposes) so I guess I haven't set them up properly :) How should I proceed to get a secure and proper setup? I also use MySQL and I think that this tutorial will be enough to set up SSH securely. Please help me understanding Apache configuration better since I'm new to setting up my own server (I've only run XAMPP earlier) and please advise regarding how I should setup a firewall as well :D

Having grown up in a household with one parent leaning left and the other leaning to the right it was the best way to keep the peace. This isn't about politics. It's about "constituents" and the need to improve the services and service levels for people--at the city, county, state/province, etc. level all the way up to national governments. As a citizen and tax payer it's also important to me that these services be provided at a reasonable cost. If there's a better and more efficient way to do something then it's my hope that a public sector organization takes advantage of technology the same way private sector companies do. Social services organizations have a complex job. They provide the services that people need, from healthcare and children's assistance to helping people find jobs. But many of these organizations are still managing these processes manually or outdated, home-grown applications that could have been written up to 30 years ago. A lot has changed in technology. On the (this is as political as I'm going to get) political front, stakeholders like you and me are expecting greater transparency on where and how funds are spent. I'll admit that most of the time, when I think about CRM systems, I think about my experience as a customer of my bank, utilities company or cable operator. But now that I'm older, have children and a house--I find myself interacting more and more with agencies and services organizations. My experiences are sometimes good and sometimes not so good. Along those lines, last week's announcement of Siebel CRM 8.2 for Public Sector caught my eye. You may not work in the public sector, but you are a constituent of some--actually a lot--of public sector organizations. I don't know which CRM systems city and county utilize but I'm going to start paying closer attention.

• Can I re-license Academic Free License code under 2-Clause BSD / ITC?

  I want to fork a piece of code licensed under the Academic Free License. For the project, it would be preferable to re-license it under the ISC License or the 2-Clause BSD license, which are equivalent. I understand that the AFL grants me things such as limitation of liability, but licensing consistency is much more important to the project, especially since we're talking about just 800 lines of code, a quarter of which I've modified in some way. And it's very important for me to give these changes back to the community, given the fact that this is software relevant to security - I need the public scrutiny that I'll get by creating a public fork. In short: At the top of the file I want to say this, or something like it: # Licensed under the Academic Free License, version 3 # Copyright (C) 2009 Original Author # Licensed under the ISC License # Copyright (C) 2012 Stefano Palazzo # Copyright (C) 2012 Company Am I allowed to do this? As a stop gap, I would also be okay with re-licensing under the GPL, however: I can find no consensus (though I can find disagreement) on whether this is allowed at all, and I don't want to risk it, of course. • Packages not showing up in created APT repository

  I created an APT repository using deb-scanpackages, and it seemed to go well. When I did a apt-get update on another server, the Packages.gz file was retrieved, and all seemed well - until I went to search for the packages contained in that repository (all packages are created locally). Several recommendations suggested reprepro; I tried that. Same result - except I had to rebuild the packages with the Priority and Section lines in the control file (nothing says this anywhere). The reprepro utility also generates a complicated directory structure which required rewriting the repository entry on the requesting server. I then found that the arch directory referenced i386 and not amd64 (which was requested by the requesting server). Is it possible that the AMD64 system isn't seeing packages compiled for i386? Searching the *Packages files in /var/lib/apt/lists show that the only packages for i386 are those I added (the other files are for the server - Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS). The server the packages were built on is Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS i686; the requesting server is x86_64. I found some discussion at the Debian AMD64FAQ but it claims to be obsolete. It makes mention of an extended syntax for repository listings for APT, and a command dpkg-subarchitecture - neither of which work on the local AMD64 server. Do I have to build two different sets of packages?

• Is comparing an OO compiler to a SQL compiler/optimizer valid?

  I'm now doing a lot of SQL development at my new job where as before I was doing Object Oriented desktop app stuff. I keep running across very large scripts (thousands of lines) and wanting to refactor in some way. I am seeing that SQL is a different sort of beast and it's probably fine to have these big scripts for the most part but while explaining this to me people are also insisting that the whole idea of refactoring is bad. That stuff like the .NET compiler are actually burdened by refactored code and that a big wall of code is more efficient and better design than code designed for reuse, readability and scalability. The other argument is that OO compilers are almost dangerously inefficient and don't have efficient memory management or runs too many CPU instructions compared to older "simpler" compilers and compared to SQL. Are these valid complaints? Even if some compiler like a C compiler is modestly more "efficient" (whatever that means on this high of a level without seeing code) would you want to write applications in C over C# or Java? Is comparing an OO compiler to a SQL compiler/optimizer even valid?
