• Cross-platform (microcontroller-PC) algorithm development

  Hello people! I was asked to develop a algorithm for network application on C. This project will be developed on Linux for PC and then it will be transferred to a more portable platform, something that will include a microcontroller. There are many microcontroller/companies out there that provide very nice and large libraries for TCP/IP. This software will hold statistics on the network performance. The whole idea of a cross platform (uC - PC) seems rubbish to me cause eventually the code should be written in a more platform specific way for the microcontroller, but I am not expert to judge anyway. Is there any clever way of doing this or is there a anyone that did this before? My brainstorming has "Wrapper library" and "Matlab"... Any ideas? Thx!

• Best way to implement a Parsing/Editable Richtextbox in WPF

  I'm trying to implement (as a prototype initially), a richtextbox control which can be parsed in real time to apply certain formatting options to it. This is being done in WPF so I thought the best way to go about it would be to extend the existing rich text box control. I've run into the issue where it isn't documented well and the examples are quite slow (the ones I found have parse the whole document on every keystroke). The way I've currently decided to go about it is to create a custom Inline element which can hold the formatting tags, and the contents. Hence I only have to parse the current paragraph and the runs in that paragraph for formatting tags. Is there a better way to achieve this? Note this isn't for code/syntax based documents (so AvalonEdit isn't appropriate). Cheers

• touchesEnded not being called??? or randomly being called

  If I lift my finger up off the first touch, then it will recognize the next touch just fine. It's only when I hold my first touch down continuously and then try and touch a different area with a different finger at the same time. It will then incorrectly register that second touch as being from the first touch again.   i just introduced a bug into my code because i seem to have misunderstood the jsp tag lifecycle. The tag worked like this before the bug: i pass the tag some collection as an attribute, and it displays it as a table. The collection was passed into the JSP from the controller. after the bug: a removed the attribute which set the collection. instead, in the tag i check if the collection is null, and then grab it by name from the request (using a naming convention). the thing that i didnt expect: after the collection was initially set in the tag, it would never become null on subsequent executions! it was still defined as an non-requred attribute in the TLD. I expected the tag to not hold on to previous values between executions.

  Can someone pitch in their opinion about pros/cons between wrapping the DataContext in an using statement or not in LINQ-SQL in terms of factors as performance, memory usage, ease of coding, right thing to do etc. Update: In one particular application, I experienced that, without wrapping the DataContext in using block, the amount of memory usage kept on increasing as the live objects were not released for GC. As in, in below example, if I hold the reference to List of q object and access entities of q, I create an object graph that is not released for GC. • What library is used for the main menu in the facebook iOS app?

  I'm making an app that has more options than will easily fit into a UITabBarController. I wanted to use something like what the facebook app has for its main menu. My guess is that it isn't proprietary to facebook, because the SCVNGR app uses something similar. This library lets you re-order the icons the way you can re-order the apps from the main menu (i.e. press and hold - icons jiggle - you can drag them around). Does anyone know what library provides this UIView? I'd like to use it if possible. Thanks!

• Question about Jboss deployment

  Hi All, I am new to Jboss and deployment of web applications etc. I have two different war files deployed on the same Jboss server. Further they also share some classes which read different properties based on the application settings (Let's call a common class as CommonClass.class which is present in App1.war and App2.war; CommonClass has a member "FIELD1", so both these war files have CommonClass.class each of which reads different properties, into CommonClass.FIELD1). But during run-time when I access FIELD1 in one application (App2.war-CommonClass.FIELD1) it has the value from another application (App1.war-CommonClass.FIELD1). Is there any way I can explicitly specify so that JBoss treats these classes and fields to be different? so that both these classes can exist in memory yet hold their respective correct values? • Is generic Money<T_amount> a good idea?

  I have a Money Type that allows math operations and is sensitive to exchange rates so it will reduce one currency to another if rate is available to calculate in a given currency, rounds by various methods. It has other features that are sensitive to money, but I need to ask if the basic data type used should be made generic in nature. I've realized that the basic data type to hold an amount may differ for financial situations, for example: retail money might be expressed as all cents using int or long where fractions of cents do not matter, decimal is commonly used for its fixed behaviour, sometimes double seems to be used for big finance and large values sometimes a special BigInteger or 3rd-party type is used. I want to know if it would be considered good form to turn Money into Money<T_amount> so it can be used in any one of the above chosen scenarios?

  Hello - I'm looking for some feedback, blog links, etc that offer some tips and tricks for iPhone GPS development. I've read and understand the API, I have my demo app up and running, etc but I have run into some "quirks" with gps on iphone. For example, it seems that you you will receive a lot less location updates when your iphone enters "power save" mode. I've read that you can combat this by playing music in your application [not sure if this is true]. It also seems that, terms of making a reasonable pedometer, you should filter out any reading with horizontal accuracies less than 20 meters. Does this sound right? Is there any kind of checklist out on the web for iphone gps gotchas? Thanks in advance.

I'm building an MFC app in Visual Studio 2008 which classifies textures and I need some sort of lightweight database to hold the characteristics (just some doubles and strings) which can be: -carried around with the app on different computers; -be able to perform queries on it from the app (searches , updates ,inserts ,etc); Currently I'm looking into SQL compact edition because it was very easy to create from Visual Studio ( I also need only one table) but I having a hard time connecting and updating the db from C++. • Parse values from a text file in C

  Say I have written to a text file in this format: key1/value1 key2/value2 akey/withavalue anotherkey/withanothervalue I have a linked list like: struct Node { char *key; char *value; struct Node *next; }; to hold the values. How would I read key1 and value1? I was thinking of putting line by line in a buffer and using strtok(buffer, '/'). Would that work? What other ways could work, maybe a bit faster or less prone to error? Please include a code sample if you can!

• Hadoop: Iterative MapReduce Performance

  Is it correct to say that the parallel computation with iterative MapReduce can be justified only when the training data size is too large for the non-parallel computation for the same logic? I am aware that the there is overhead for starting MapReduce jobs. This can be critical for overall execution time when a large number of iterations is required. I can imagine that the sequential computation is faster than the parallel computation with iterative MapReduce as long as the memory allows to hold a data set in many cases. Is it the only benefit to use the iterative MapReduce? If not, what are the other benefits could be?

  For quite some time , I was reading about the optimistic concurrency in NHibernate. If what i understood was correct then the below sample should hold good. Consider two transactions T1 and T2. When T1 and T2 are done simultaneously , the state(DB entries) gets updated with the values of the most latest update.(T1 or T2). Though it seems to be conceptually sound , how do i simulate this for the purpose of understanding and integration testing.? Can someone help me with a sample c# code.? Thanks , vijay

• Get drive label in C#

  When I use System.IO.DriveInfo.GetDrives() and look at the .VolumeLabel property of one of the drives, I see "PATRIOT XT", which is indeed the drive's volume label. If I open "My Computer", instead I see "TrueCrypt Traveler Disk", and I can't seem to find any way to programmatically retrieve that value as none of the DriveInfo properties hold that value. I also tried querying the information via WMI's Win32_LogicalDisk, but no properties contained that value there either. So any idea what the label My Computer uses is called, and more importantly, how to programmatically retrieve it? Thanks

• Godaddy ASPNET membership database woes -- PLEASE HELP

  Ok heres the deal I purchased a windows shared hosting account on godaddy that came with 2 MSSQL databases. I setup one to hold my site data and the other installed aspnet membership schema to store site members. The site works perfectly even displaying data from the 1st database. However when I try to login or register I get this nasty error Exception Details: System.Configuration.Provider.ProviderException: The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. Ive gone through my web.config and theres nothing wrong with my 2 connection strings. It seems godaddy has a problem with using 2 mssql databases simultaneously when 1 is for membership. Googling just finds a whole lot of people with the same problem -- but no solutions! Does anyone know a solution or a workaround?...or has anyone ever successfully used 2 databases(1 for membership) on godaddy?

• Flash player "now playing list" without interrupting current song

  I am designing a website that plays music. I need a flash player that has or can handle a now playing list. The problem I am facing is that I cannot update the playlist without refreshing the player which means it will interrupt the song that is currently playing. I have trying with JW player in particular so far and have not been successful. All i am able to do is pass a playlist as an xml file but not able to update it without refreshing the playlist. Is there any other player that would better suit my needs? Is there a way i can do this with jw player itself

• What is the best software to capture full-screen 3h programming session in Windows?

  Hi, I'm planning a laboratorial experiment to assess behavior of groups when programming using some tools under study. For that, I'll need to capture their entire screen to disk. Mostly, what will be displayed is code, so I'm not to worried with image quality. However, it's paramount that the team is not able to stop the recording by accident, and the tool should be rebust enough to hold at least 3h of video. If possible, it would be nice for researchers in other rooms to "watch" the video as it is recording. Actually, this last requirement reminded me that I could use a VNC recording software, and install a VNC client in each laboratory computer. Anyway, what is your experience with this? Which software do you recommend? Thanks.

• iPhone App link to iStore for commission

  Is it possible to link from an iPhone application to the iStore so a user can (a) play a sample of music and then navigate to that track in order to buy it? In a bit more detail: the application lists a number of tracks for a particular artist (a recommendation by the app based on user criteria). The user scrolls down the list and finds a track that they are interested in. They play the 30 second sample (as you would in the iStore) and then, if they like it, they press on a link that takes them to the iStore where they can purchase the track. If they buy the track, then the application gets 5% of the money paid for the track. I have looked through the web and found a number of suggestions but nothing seems to fit the specification above. I would be very grateful if anyone is able to tell me whether this is possible and some clues as to how it would be done. Thanks, Simon...

• Spinlocks, How Much Useful Are They?

  How often do you find yourself actually using spinlocks in your code? How common is it to come across a situation where using a busy loop actually outperforms the usage of locks? Personally, when I write some sort of code that requires thread safety, I tend to benchmark it with different synchronization primitives, and as far as it goes, it seems like using locks gives better performance than using spinlocks. No matter for how little time I actually hold the lock, the amount of contention I receive when using spinlocks is far greater than the amount I get from using locks (of course, I run my tests on a multiprocessor machine). I realize that it's more likely to come across a spinlock in "low-level" code, but I'm interested to know whether you find it useful in even a more high-level kind of programming?

• Database design: circular references

  I have three database tables: users emails invitations Emails are linked to users by a user_id field. Invitations are also linked to users by a user_id field Emails can be created without an invitation, but every invitation must have an email. I would like to link the emails and invitations tables so it is possible to find the email for a particular invitation. However this creates a circular reference, both an invitation and an email record hold the id for the same user. Is this bad design and if so, how could I improve it? My feeling is that with use of foreign keys and good business logic, it is fine.

• PHP preg_replace function returns different values with the same data set

  I need to use preg_match PHP function. I have a simple pattern to check the string and the thing is as follows: when I run the script at first, it gives me no match (it is supposed to match though) but when I hold F5 in my browser for a while, out of a sudden it says there's a match within the string. As I keep pushing F5, it gives either true or false. Say the pattern is /^(.*)\/[A-Za-z0-9]*$/ (I guess it's not the best way but still) and the subject is galeria/zdjecia/. I believe preg_match should return true with this set of data. Note that the data does not change when pressing F5. Why is that?
