• What to name an array of flags?

  I have a project where lots of the objects hold state by maintaining simple boolean flags. There are lots of these, so I maintain them within a uint32_t and use bit masking. There are now so many flags to keep track of, I've created an abstraction for them (just a class wrapping the uint32_t) with set(), clear(), etc. My question: What's a nice accurate, concise name for this class? What name could I give this class so that you'd have a reasonable idea what it was [for] knowing the name only? Some ideas I had: FlagBank FlagArray etc Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Cheers, -Chris

• Using Spotlight as the "database" of an application

  I'm developing an OS X application to organize "things" (as iTunes is to music and iPhoto to photos). Instead of having my own database and index, I'm considering using Spotlight to essentially serve this purpose. Has anyone tried this? Is it wise? The main benefit, as I see it, would be simplicity and avoiding redundancy. It seems a bit wasteful to implement my own index machinery when OS X comes with one built in. I have little experience working with Spotlight, however. From a user's perspective, I do know that it has been slow and imprecise in older versions of OS X. I also have a gut-feeling that since it's aimed at searching the whole filesystem, using it for "local" purposes becomes hackish. Obviously, my applications's index needs to constantly be up-to-date. Can mdimport be used for this?

• Pygame program that can get keyboard input with caps

  I have a Pygame program that needs text input. The way it does this is to get keyboard input and when a key is pressed it renders that key so it is added to the screen. Essentially it acts like a text field. The problem is, when you hold shift it doesn't do anything. I relize this is because the program ignores shift input and instead writes the text if it's number is under 128. I have thought of setting a variable when shift is pressed then capitalizing if it was true, but string capitalization only woks on letters, not things like numbers or semicolons. Is there maybe a number I can add to the ascii number typed to modify it if shift is pressed, or something else?

• Saving generated .wav file to server with PHP

  I am developing a website where users can compose their own music, and the site will generate a .wav file for their creation. This is working correctly (inasmuch as I can play it on the page). However, I would like to save this file to the server to be listened to/downloaded at a later time, and the saved version of the file can no longer be opened and played by the HTML audio tag. What, if anything, must I put into the file besides the file besides the raw data? Instead of setting the src attribute of the audio tag to the location of the file, will I actually need to open it and generate a URI?

• How to correctly pop a modeless dialog from console using MFC

  I need to create a console application that has a main() function and pop a modeless dialog, so the console can still work in parallel to the modeless dialog (do other work, like communicating with the modeless dialog). Whatever i tried, i could only pop a modal dialog. (where the console is in hold till the modal dialog close itself). When switching to modeless dialog using Create() and ShowWindow() the dialog is displayed without its controls and it freeze / block (you can see the hourglass cursor). 1) i tried to pop the modeless dialog from the main() function 2) i tried to pop the modeless dialog from the InitInstance() of a CWinApp derived class In all cases the modeless dialog freeze / block. • Strange behaviour of switch case with boolean value

  My question is not about how to solve this error(I already solved it) but why is this error with boolean value. My function is private string NumberToString(int number, bool flag) { string str; switch(flag) { case true: str = number.ToString("00"); break; case false: str = number.ToString("0000"); break; } return str; } Error is Use of unassigned local variable 'str'. Bool can only take true or false. So it will populate str in either case. Then why this error? Moreover this error is gone if along with true and false case I add a default case, but still what can a bool hold apart from true and false? Why this strange behaviour with bool variable?

• JLabel withing another JLabel

  I want to do a very simple thing with java swing and I'm not being able to. I added a jLabel as it is the only object using java swing that can hold an image (using the icon property)...at least I wasn't able to set an image using other objects. Now I want to add another jlabel in top of the first one with another image so it can be "clicked" independently from the "background" label. But whenever I try to add it using the graphical editor or by doing jLabel1.add(jLabel2) it doesn't work...it simply sets next to the label1 but not on top of it. This is in order to do a java application like the Tic Tac Toe game...so I can have the background which are squares (first label) and the others the "X" and "O". board This might be the board and I want to put labels on each square so they can be the pieces.

• flex3 Format date without timezone

  I'm receiving a date from a server in milliseconds since 1-1-1970. I then use the DateFormatter to print the date to the screen. However, Flex adds timedifference and thus it displays a different time than what I got from the server. I've fixed this by changing the date before printing to screen. But I think that's a bad solution because the date object doesn't hold the correct date. Now I need to have different sizes of this wiget for the user to choose from. for example I need a medium, small and large size widget. so when the user install the app and hold the the home screen then choose widget, in the widget menu I want him to see three widget with the same app name but with the size. something like this: helloSmall helloMedium helloLarge I have the medium one ready but how can I make the small and the large in the same app? knowing that all three sizes contain the same exact data and actions just the size and the background are different. • Why is e.Item.DataItem null on ItemDataBound event when binding an asp:net Repeater to a Collection?

  Hi, I'm trying to bind a collection implementing the ICollection, IEnumerable and IList interface to an asp.net repeater. The Collection is named CustomCollection. So I'm setting the datasource of the repeater to the collection, as follows: rptRepeater.DataSource = customCollection; rptRepeater.Databind(); Then, on the ItemDataBound event, I'm trying to access the DataItem object, as follow: void rptRepeater_ItemDataBound(object sender, RepeaterItemEventArgs e){ object obj = e.Item.DataItem; // DataItem is null for some reason } For some reason the e.Item.DataItem object is null. Do anyone know why this is, and/or what I could do to get hold of the object in the collection that is to be databound to the repeater? Thanx!

• T-SQL out of order insert

  Basically I have a User-Defined Table Type (for use as a table-valued variable) which I'm referencing in a stored procedure that effectively just calls two other stored procedures, then inserts those values into the table type. Id est INSERT INTO @tableValuedVariable (var1, var2, var3, var4, var5) EXEC [dbo].StoredProcedure1; INSERT INTO @tableValuedVariable (var1, var2, var5) EXEC [dbo].StoredProcedure2; You can probably already tell what I'm going to ask. Basically StoredProcedure2 only returns a few of the values the table is set to hold, and I'd like those other variables to just be null (as defined as default). Only SQL is complaining that I'm not specifying all the variables available to that table. The return datasets can be quite sizable so I'd like to avoid loops and such for obvious reasons.   I'm working on a music visualization plugin for libvisual. It's an AVS clone -- AVS being from Winamp. Right now I have a superscope plugin. This element has 4 scripts, and "point" is run at every pixel. You can imagine that it has to be rather fast. The original libvisual avs clone had a JIT compiler that was really fast, but it had some bugs and wasn't fully implemented, so I decided to try v8. Well, v8 is too slow running the compiled script at every pixel. Is there any other script engine that would be pretty fast for this purpose?

• In a WPF Application, What happens after my code in the main window constructor is executed?

  I'm wondering what happens after the constructor is done executing my code, because the constructor is taking like 10 seconds to run on a cold start up, but according to the profiler, my code is done executing in like 2 seconds. Also stepping through the code in the debugger, after the last line of my constructor, I sit there and wait for 7-8 seconds before the window appears. Why is this? If the window is loading content or something, why isn't it displayed on the screen, done loading or not after the constructor finishes it's job? What's the hold up? (or how do i figure that out)

• How to make scrolling through images as fast as Apple's Photos app

  The Goal — On an iPhone, to browse through several hundred locally-stored jpgs using a UIScrollView. The Problem — Like many others before me, I've tried implementing a scroll view based on Apple's Page Control sample code and found it lacking. The biggest issue I'm currently up against is that the sample code's architecture doesn't seem to scale. With just a few images loaded from disk, everything's fine. Once the number of images gets into the dozens, though, scrolling suffers terribly: the scrollview stutters mid-scroll with each new swipe. The only code I've toyed with that comes even close to being reasonably responsive is Three20, but even there the performance doesn't hold a candle to Photos. For now, I'm just using Three20, but a faster, custom solution would definitely be preferable.

• Handling undo and edit flag on window with several model objects

  Hi, I've a window that will hold several instances of a model object, listed in a table. The model object is updated using a text view. What is the best way to keep the edit flag and undo manager in synch with the content of the different model objects? I'm thinking creating an instance of the undo manager on the model object and manually set the undo manager for the text view every time the user choses a new model object. Does the undo manager also handle the edited flag?

• ASP.NET MVC: Is it good to access HttpContext in a controller?

  I've been working with ASP.NET(WebForm) for a while, but new to ASP.NET MVC. From many articles I've read, in most cases the reason that the controllers are hard to test is because they are accessing the runtime components: HttpContext (including Request, Response ...). Accessing HttpContext in a controller seems bad. However, I must access these components somewhere, reading input from Request, sending results back via Response, and using Session to hold a few state variables. So where is the best place to access these runtime components if we don't access them in a controller? Best regards, Zach@Shine

• Testing ASP.NET security in Firefox

  I'm not sure whether this question belongs on StackOverflow or SuperUser, but here goes nothing... I'm trying to test out some basic security problems on my personal ASP.NET website to see exactly how the custom validators, etc. work when tampering with the data. I've been looking at the Firefox extension TamperData which seems to do the trick, but it doesn't feel very professional at all. The issues I'm having with TamperData is that the textbox for the POST data is way too small to hold the ASP.NET view-state, so I have to copy that data into Emacs and then back again to be productive at all. I also don't like that there doesn't seem to be an option to only tamper with data which is from/to localhost. Any ideas on better extensions for the task or better methods to test it?

• How to serialize Java primitives using Jersey REST

  In my application I use Jersey REST to serialize complex objects. This works quite fine. But there are a few method which simply return an int or boolean. Jersey can't handle primitive types (to my knowledge), probably because they're no annotated and Jersey has no default annotation for them. I worked around that by creating complex types like a RestBoolean or RestInteger, which simply hold an int or boolean value and have the appropriate annotations. Isn't there an easier way than writing these container objects?

  Hi; Suppose you have an fd set which can have zero or more sockets in it. When I try to call select operation on empty fd set, what I get is -1 as the number of fds which are set, meaning error. So what would you suggest to overcome this problem, you might say do not call if empty but I have a loop and any time fd set can hold 0 or more sockets. What is the best approach about this problem? However, I'm stuck at the very beginning -- where do I look to find information on how to do this? Pretty much every link I see talks about developing applications that run on the iPhone, but nothing about desktop app for interfacing with an iPhone. I'm on Windows (no access to a Mac, but I'll take suggestions for that for when I eventually acquire one), and I'm most familiar with C#, but other languages are definitely an option. • Access MP3 audio data independently of ID3 tags?

  Hi, this is a 2 part question. First off, is it possible to access the audio data in an MP3 independently of the ID3 tags, and secondly, is there any way to do so using available libraries? I recently consolidated my music collection from 3 computers and ended up with songs which had changed ID3 tags, but the audio data itself was unmodified. Running a search for duplicate files failed because the file changed with the ID3 tag change, but I think it should be possible to identify duplicate files if I just run a deduplication using the audio data for comparison. I know that it's possible to seek to a particular position past the ID3 header in the file, and directly read the data, but was wondering if there's a library that would expose the audio data so I could just extract the data, run a checksum on it, and store the computed result somewhere, then look for identical checksums. (Also, I'd probably have to use some kind of library when you take into account variable length headers.)

• Why does GetClusterShape return null when the cluster specification was retrieved through the GetClu

  Suppose I have a virtual earth shape layer called shapeLayer1 (my creative energy is apparently at an alltime low). When i call the GetClusteredShapes method I get an array of VEClusterSpecification objects that represent each and every one of my currently visible clusters; no problem there. But when I call the GetClusterShape() method it returns null... null! Why on earth would it do that? I used firebug to confirm that the private variable of the VEClusterSpecification that's supposed to hold a reference to the shape is indeed null so it's not the method that's causing the problem. Some have suggested that this is actually documented behavior Returns null if a VEClusterSpecification object was returned from the VEShapeLayer.GetClusteredShapes Method But looking at the current MSDN documentation for the VEShape class it says: Returns if a VEClusterSpecification object was returned from the VEShapeLayer.GetClusteredShapes Method Is this a bug or a feature? Is there any known workarounds or (if it is a bug) some plan on when they are going to fix it?

• iPad launch orientation

  After reading many posts, I still haven't got a clue how to solve this problem... The first view of my app is a tableViewController. I override (BOOL) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: (UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation and it always returns YES. If I hold my iPad upright under landscape orientation, it rotates right after I launch the app. However, if I put my iPad flat on the table, even though my homepage is in landscape orientation, it launches in protrait orientation. So I guess the problem is, how can I get the orientation of my homepage and launch my app with that orientation?
