• Android: Saving custom button and spinner

  Hello All, I am new to Android programming and was handed a fairly large program that is almost complete, but needed support for switching between portrait and landscape view. I added android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation" to the manifest and used onConfigurationChanged to save the view data and that works. However, there is a button that displays the date selected (when pressed a calendar to select the date comes up) and a spinner that displays the current view and is used to select a new view. Those two items are being cleared/reset and do not work at all after the screen flip. I have been attempting to use onSaveInstanceState and onRestoreInstanceState to fix that, but I cannot figure out how to get it to work. Any advice?

  I love to use Google Documents as MS Word and MS Excel replacements for online collaboration. However, now I need to discuss architecture layout for my software. Nothing too fancy, perhaps a little (pseudo-)UML, but mostly basic shapes (rectangles, ellipses etc.) with labels, connected by thin lines or arrows. In olden Windows times I'd go for Visio, and be happy. But now I want to use online tool. Preferably free. No need for code reverse engineering etc., just plain assisted vector drawing. Any advice? What do you use?

• Unit testing a SQL code generator

  The team I'm on is currently writing code in TSQL to generate TSQL code that will be saved as scripts and later run. We're having a little difficulty in separating our unit tests between testing the code generator parts and testing the actual code that they generate. I've read through another similar question, but I was hoping to get some specific examples of what kind of unit test cases we might have. As an example, let's say that I have a bit of code that simply generates a DROP statement for a view, given the view schema and name. Do I just test that the generated code matches some expected outcome using string comparisons and then in a later integration or system test make sure that the drop actually drops the view if it exists, does nothing if the view doesn't exist, or raises an error if the view is one that we are marking as not allowing a drop? • When to choose "Generate an activator..." when creating a new Eclipse plugin project

  There are lots of Eclipse RCP tutorials that begin with "Create a new plugin project..." It seems that approx. 70% of them specify checking the Generate an activator, a Java class that controls the plug-in life cycle. The others specifically say don't check that toggle. Its not clear to me, what generating an activator class does for you, when you need one, and when you don't. For being a prominent option you get every time you create a new plugin project (it seems to be set on by default) this option isn't very well explained anywhere that I have found. Any advice/rules of thumb on choosing this option when creating Eclipse plugin projects?

• Checked equivalent to IllegalArgumentException?

  I have a method that takes an enum as a parameter and returns some information dependent on that parameter. However, that enum contains some values which should not be handled, and should raise an error condition. Currently the method throws an IllegalArgumentException but I would like this to be a checked exception to force callers to catch it (and return gracefully, logging an error). Is there something suitable or should I create my own Exception subclass? I'm open to other patterns as well. A reasonable reaction would be that all values of the enum should be handled, but that isn't the case. When a new value is added to the enum, I want to make sure that this method does the right thing - alerting a human is preferable to using some default return value in this case. Thanks for any advice.

• How to use libraries compiled with MingW in MSVC?

  Hello, I have compiled several libraries with MingW/MSYS... the generated static libraries are always .a files. When I try to link the library with a MSVC project, Visual Studio throws 'unresolved external symbols' ... It means that the .a static library is incompatible with MS C++ Linker. I presume it has to be converted to a MSVC compatible .lib file. Either .a and .lib are just AR archives of .o or .obj files, so is there any way how to use MingW compiled libs in a MSVC project? Or do I have to compile/link everything just in one compiler/linker - MSVC only/MingW only? The MingW compiler is said to be compatible with MSVC. I read a few threads about this topic, but they mostly say that renaming the file to .lib should do the work, but it unfortunately doesn't work for me. Thanks for any advice.

• WPF/.NET data access models - resource recommendations

  We're in the early design/prep phases of transferring/updating a rather large "legacy" 3 tier client-server app to a new version. We’re looking at doing WPF over Winforms as it appears to be the direction Microsoft is pushing development of the future and we’d like the maximize the life cycle/span of the apps. That said during the rewrite we’d like to make as many changes to our data access/presentation model to improve performance as much as possible up front as many. I’ve been doing some research along that vein but the vast majority of the resources I've found that discuss WPF focus only simple data tracking apps or focus on the very basics UI design/controls. The few items that even discuss data presentation are fairly elementary in depth. Are there any books/articles/recommended reading/other resources recommended for development related to large enterprise level business apps? Any “gotchas” that should/could be avoided? General advice to minimize the time underwater

• Sending an image via POST Multipart (HTTPRequest)

  I'm trying to send an image to a server, using HTTP Post Multipart. Everything else is fine, I have all the boundrys set and stuff. But what do I have to do to the image before hand? Do I have to convert it to binary? Here is the header data from the header (using Fiddler). This is what I need to upload: -----------------------------7daea2aa40c80 Content-Disposition: form-data; name="pict"; filename="pic.jpeg" Content-Type: image/pjpeg <Binary here ... or at least I think it is> .. ?????JFIF?????????C? (lots more of this I removed) Any advice?

• Making a textfile into a list in matlab?

  I have a textfile and would like to import it onto Matlab and make it a list Person1 name = steven grade = 11 age= 17 Person2 name = mike grade = 9 age= 15 Person3 name = taylor grade = 11 age= 17 There are a few hundred entries like these above. Each are seperated by a blank line I was thinking I could scan the text and make the information between each blank line into an item in the list. I also would like to be able to look up each person by name once I have a list like the one below. I want something like x = [Person1 Person2 Person3 name = steven name = mike name = taylor grade = 11 grade = 9 grade = 11 age = 17 age = 15 age = 17] This seems very straight forward but I have been having trouble with this so far, I may be overlooking something. anyone have any ideas or advice?

• Change color of a table cell using javascript using dropdown menu

  I'd like to use some javascript code to change the background color of a single cell within a table. I have some code below which allows me to change the page background color. This is similar in concept to what I would like to do, but I would really like to be able to change just one cell...not the whole page. I have thought about making the rest of the cell borders and background colors white, leaving the cell I want to manipulate transparent, but I think this probably a brute force method that will cause me trouble down the road. Does anyone have any advice to do this with javascript? What would be the best approach to parallelise this? If I wrap iCount with omp single or omp atomic then the code gives an error and I figured out that would be invalid inside omp for. I guess I am adding many extraneous stuffs to paralellise this. Need some advice... Thanks, Sayan

• UITableView becomes invisible after changing data in it

  Hi I have application with TabBar that control several views. In one view i control connection to different servers.Each server provides different set of items. I display these items in UITableView on other view. I create table view like this UITableView * aTableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(X,Y,Width,Height) style:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; [[self view] addSubview:aTableView]; aTableView.da taSource = self; The problem is that Table view displayed ok first time , but if i go back to view number one and change server(changing list of items that should be displayed in table view), table view becomes invisible for some reason. If i tap on the screen in place where it should be, its becomes visible again. Ive tried to call to reloadData and setNeedDisplay in viewWillAppear of the UIViewController that hosts this table view, but without success. Any advice? Thanks

• Table and column naming conventions when plural and singular forms are odd or the same

  In my search I found mostly arguments for whether to use plurality in database naming conventions, and ways to handle it in either case. I have decided I prefer plural table names, so I don't want to argue that. I need to represent an animal's species and genus and so on in a database. The plural and singular form for 'species' are the same, and the plural of 'genus' is 'genera'. I think I can get by with: Table: Genera | Column: Genus But I'm unsure how I should handle: Table: Species | Column: Species If I really wanted to be lazy about this I'd just name them 'species specie' and 'genuses genus', but I would prefer to read them in their correct forms. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Compact Framework - ListView like control ?

  Hello. I have been playing with Compact Framework lately and i need some advice. I have a collection of items. One of the properties on each item is a string type that holds XML. This XML defines image, font, style etc... Im looking for a control (similar to listView) that would replace listBox control. Im not satisfied with listView control, because it is very limited on items level. The control has to be dynamic enough so that my parser could parse the XML and customise the control. For a start i would like to show an image and perhaps some font styles for each row in the control. Here is a sample what im trying to achieve: Any suggestions?

• How to organise a php based website

  I am putting my php /mysql website up and this is my scenario The users are grouped into sites each site with their own unique database. There will be about 40 users per site. the two options I'm trying to decide between are have a central website running the php and directing the users off to their own database using sub domains for each user each with their own php in htdocs I dont even know if 2 is possible/stupid but if it was, would it make any difference to performance as they're all being run by the same server. Any other ideas/ advice much appreciated as I want to organise it the best way from the start

• scrollable tab bar widget solution

  I have a web page that I use to update a fairly complex data structure. The page itself has lots of information, so I developed some simple Tab-page control, with plain html. Each tab is a different page, so when the user click on a tab a post is issued to the new page. Fairly simply. The problem is that the page has about 10 tabs, so it no longer fits on screens. I'd like to know if you can advice some way to develop a scrollable tab bar or any other way to overcome this situation. maybe a widget or something... thanks a lot saludos sas

• Google Map Overlay Icon disappears at certain zoom level

  I notice that Firefox 3 demonstrates this problem. I put down an overlay icon and play around with the map zoom. At certain zoom level, I found that the icon disappears for some unknown reason. Zooming out brings back the icon. Or during the disappearance, I click on the Google Map and it will somehow trigger to bring back the icon. I suspect it has something to do with the event triggering. Internet Explorer doesn't demonstrate the same problem though. Any advice? Like how to trigger update event on Firefox?

• using crypto++ on iphone sdk with pycrypto on app engine

  Hi, I'm trying to encrypt http requests using crypto++ and decrypt them with pycrypto on the app engine server end. Using Arc4 encryption, I can successfully encrypt and decrypt on the iphone end but when I try decrypting on app engine, the result is garbled. I thought maybe it has something to do with the encoding of the NSString but am not certain. It's not clear to me if I need to call encode() on the cipher on the server end before decrypting, although that does seem to resolve a failure to decrypt involving ascii values. • How do I convert a windows forms app from C# to VB ?

  I've been converting all kinds of other things, classes, interfaces, ASP.NET MVC apps, and WPF applications, but I am stumped as to how to convert a windows forms application, as the whole structure seems to be different. Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this problem? I see essentially that you have two files, Form1.cs and Form1.Designer.cs. Literally translating them from C# to VB doesn't work because of some intricacies or other of how Visual Basic works. I think you /might/ be able to convert Form1.cs in this way, as it's just a constructor plus event handlers, but the designer contains the references to the controls etc. and I am not sure how to go about doing that. I am using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2.

• Grails: Property Null error

  I've a domain called Modulo with some properties and a Controller with a method that create a object from model and save it, when execute save the shell show this error: La propiedad [{0}] de la clase [{1}] no puede ser nulo But if i set the constraint nullable to true, the error show again. I think that i should not set this cosntraint. The model is linked to a mysql table with all properties except id allow null. I think I am not doing something wrong here. Any advice??   This will be a bit subjective, I'm afraid, but I'd value the advice of the Collective. Our web application lists documents that users can download; standard file navigator stuff: Type Name Created Size ----------------------------------- PDF Doc 1 01/04/2010 15 KB PDF Doc 2 01/04/2010 15 MB Currently we list the file size as text, but I'd like to improve this by having some way of showing visually whether the file is tiny, normal or huge. The reason for this is so that users can scan the list quickly and spot files that are likely to take a long time downloading. My options currently are: Bigger font sizes for bigger files (drawback: the layout can become untidy) Icons (like a wi-fi signal strength indicator; drawback: harder to scan) Keep all sizes in KB so the number of zeroes indicates size (drawback: users have to calculate the "friendly" size in their heads) I know this is quite a minor thing, but I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter!

• Best way to store 3 pieces of data as a single entry

  For a game server, I want to record details when a player makes a kill, store this, and then at intervals update to a sql database. The part i'm interested in right now is the best method of storing the kill information. What i'd like to pass to the sql server on update would be {PlayerName, Kills, Deaths}, where the kills and deaths are a sum for the period between updates. So i'm assuming i'd build a list along the lines of {bob, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} {tom, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} then on update, consolidate the list to {frank, 14, 3}etc Can someone offer some advice please?
