• Speech recognition with Flash or Silverlight

  I'm developing a web user interface to enter some information that is not very complex but needs to be loaded in real time. I think that the application could make use of speech recognition to facilitate the task. Te core of the interface is being built with Javascript and jQuery, but can easily include a flash or silverlight component. I believe that´s probably the way to go... I don't need to recognize everything that the user says, but only a few prerecorded commands. Also, I don't want the user to click on a button to specify the begining and the end of the spoken command. It should be detected live. Is there anything that does this? I would be grateful if anyone tells me about a complete solution, free or commercial, as well as any advice on capturing a sound stream from the mic and process it with flash or sliverlight. • Javascript: Link with Chinese characters in Internet Explorer

  I have a problem with a link containing Chinese characters that is send to a javascript file in Internet Explorer. Generally that link is created by PHP and looks like this in IE: www.example.com/%E6%B7%AC%E7%81%AB%E6%B2%B9_ASIN5034CN.pdf In firefox it looks like this: www.example.com/???_ASIN5034CN.pdf Both work in that direct way. I need to pass that link to a javascript that popups on the page and it will be displayed after the user entered her/his contact information. This also works on firefox and other browsers but in IE that link is transfered to this which does not work anymore: www.example.com/æ·¬ç«æ²¹_ASIN5034CN.pdf I tried to do some encoding on it with encodeURIComponent but still no success. So the link is passed correctly to the javascript but it is totally screwed up only by IE. Thx for any advice on that problem.

I'm quite lost after having looked into articles that explain how the CLR manages memory. Any advice on getting rid of it would be appreciated. My first dabble in C+++/CLI isn't going too well.

• Mercurial How To Merge 2 Repositories that share a common ancestor but are not clones of the same re

  I am using hg-subversion, and I have 2 different hg repositories one from our svn trunk, and one from a branch of the trunk. I would like to link them somehow. At some point in the history both Hg repositories will be identical is there some way to join them? In other words is there a way to relate the repositories from within Hg? The technique I am currently using is to just export the second repository over top of the working copy of the revision they share, and then commit that working copy as a branch in Hg, but I lose the history this way. Any advice would be great

• Using multiple SWF Object - Flash doesn't focus on rollover

  I've got a page with multiple embeds of Flash objects, including dynamically created graphs. I'm including them all with SWF Object JS declared in the header. It works fine in the fact that all are loaded. But, for some reason when you move down on the page (so they're out of view) and back, or click on another object it no longer has focus when you're rolling over. I.e. I have a flash menu that moves on rollover. When you go down the page, click on something, then go back up it no longer response to rollover. I've seen bits on here and elsewhere about losing focus in Firefox (which is the browser Im using - i havent managed to find this bug in IE) but it's talking about literally not being able to type or whatever, when you click on it. This is on rollover. Has anyone got any advice or thoughts on this subject?

• What threading analysis tools do you recommend?

  My primary IDE is Visual Studio 2005 and I have a large C/C++ project. I'm interested in what thread analysis tools are recommended. By that I mean, I want a tool, static or dynamic, to help find race conditions, deadlocks, and the like. So far I've casually researched the following: 1. Intel Thread Checker: I don't believe that it ties into VS 2005? 2. Valgrind/Helgrind: free. 3. Coverity: this is a costly tool if i understand correctly. Anyone have experience with any of these or other? I'd much appreciate any advice. Thank you.

• Delete files from blobstore using file serving URL

  In my app (GWT on GAE) we are storing on our database the serving URL that is stored on blobstore. When user selects one of these files and clicks "delete", we need to delete the file from blobstore. If not use Ajax, it maybe much easier, just return View, but if use AJAX, what data structure should return?I just use Json to return the data, but i found each JSON data model return to the client browser, the JS have to use different code to parse it, remove the originally table rows, add the new data rows(because the column is different) etc. It make me crazy, is there any better way to do that?   I have two tables that link together through an id one is "submit_moderate" and one is "submit_post" The "submit_moderate" table looks like this id moderated_by post 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 4 Michael 60 Im using a simple query to get data from the "submit_post" table according to the "submit_moderate" table. $get_posts = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM submit_moderate WHERE moderated_by!='$user'"); $user is the person who is signed in. Now my problem is when I run this query, with the user 'Michael' it will retrieve this 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 Now technically this is correct however I don't want to retrieve the first row because 60 is associated with Michael as well as James. Basically I don't want to retrieve that value '60'. I know why this is happening however I can't figure out how to do this. I appreciate any hints or advice I can get.

• CSS Container not growing with grid?

  Hi, I have a container background defined in CSS like this; .container { background:#fff; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; position: relative; width:970px; border:1px solid #000; padding:5px 10px; } The problem is I have a jqGrid put in the bottom of the container (near the bottom edge) and when its initially drawn it does fit inside the container panel and looks correct. Something like this (please pardon my non-l33t graphic skillz): But then when I populate the grid with rows it outgrows the container and it looks really tacky, something like this (I circled the original container background edges): I am sure its something I am doing wrong with the CSS. Any advice would be appreciated. EDIT: The problem isn't the width its the height of the container being overlapped by the new height of the now populated grid

• I'm working on a website that sells different artwork, what's the best way to handle different image

  I'm working on a website that will allow users to upload and sell their artwork in different sizes. I was wondering what the best way would be to handle the different file sizes automatically. A few points I was curious on: How to define different size categories (small, medium, large) in such a way that I'll be able to dynamically re-size images with proportional dimensions. Should I store actual jpegs of the different sizes for download? Or would it be easier to generate these different sizes for download on the fly My thumbnails will be somewhat larger than your average thumbnails, should I store a second 'thumbnail image' with the sites watermark overlaying it? Or once again, generate this on the fly? All opinions, advice are greatly appreciated!

• Is it a good idea to "migrate business logic code into our domain model"?

  I am reading Hibernate in Action and the author suggests to move business logic into our domain models (p. 306). For instance, in the example presented by the book, we have three entities named Item, Bid, and User and the author suggests to add a placeBid(User bidder, BigDecimal amount) method to the Item class. Considering that usually we have a distinct layer for business logic (e.g. Manager or Service classes in Spring) that among other things control transactions, etc. is this really a good advice? Isn't it better not to add business logic methods to our entities? Thanks in advance.

• Memory Warning but Small Live Bytes

  Hi everyone, In my application, I get a memory warning of level 1 and then 2 after repeating some action (choosing a picture + processing) several times and then a crash. The leak tool doesn't show any leak. I'm also following the Allocations tool in Instruments and my Live Bytes are roughly 4 MB, overall I allocate 113 MB. At maximum I have maybe 20 MB in memory when the picture is loaded. Since I have to repeat an action to get to the crash, it is very likely to be a memory leak. However, I don't know how to locate it since my live bytes are 4 MB and things supposed to be allocated (apart a small leak of ~100 KB in the UIImagePickerController). How much can I trust the memory leak/allocation tools? Would you have an advice to help me locate the reason of the problem?

• Android - Looking for an AOP solution

  I'm writing an application that on the bottom line uses it's internal API for some manipulations. The problem is that to call any method provided by that class first I (or anybody who uses the API) have to call #prepare() and after that #cleanup(). It all worked fine until the application and the API started to grow. And the risk of not calling one of the supplied methods before or after the API is now to big to be ignored (which makes it a bug risky application). Searching for a solution I found this question. I use Google Guice in my app for other purposes, but Android doesn't support AOP, that's why a use only guice-no_aop-x.jar. So I end-up with two questions: Is there an AOP solution for android to implement the same approach that is shown in the link above? Or may be someone has an idea that will be suitable for my case? • acts_as_taggable_on and auto_complete returning no results

  I'm using acts_as_taggable_on in a model, and am trying to implement the auto_complete plugin. It seems as though I have everything hooked up correctly, but the search isn't returning any results.   Hi all I have a couple of pages in my site which open in a shadowbox window rather than the main window. My problem is that if the user session expires, then the user clicks on one of the links that open in a shadowbox, they are redirected to the login page INSIDE THE SHADOWBOX, which i don't want. I've been trying to think of the best way to handle this - one way i thought of, which seems a bit clumsy tbh, was on the login page to test if we're in a shadowbox, and if we are then close it and redirect the parent window to the login page. a) does this seem like a sensible plan? I added the following to my login page, which works: $(document).ready(function(){ if(window.parent.location != window.location){ window.parent.location.href = window.location; } } but i have to wait for the shadowbox to finish loading the page and then redirect. So it's working but like i say a bit clumsy. Is there a nicer way? grateful for any advice - max

• django: ajax view structure

  I want to know the correct way to structure ajax views in django. say i do something like : def foo_json(request): if is.ajax(): # return JSON here and make it available as a resource at something like '/foo/data/'.. all is fine.. but if I point the browser at '/foo/data/' .. obviously I get an error (debug) like: app.views.foo_json didn't return an HttpResponse object. so... my question is: Whats the best way structure this kind of view? ..should I return an HTTP response code ..maybe 404 / 405 ... or something else? - not sure of the best way to handle this, any advice appreciated :)

  Hi there, I know this is a weird question to ask, but I would like to know if there is any documentation/blog-article out there that explains the architecture of a Website content management system? More particularly, I am interested to learn more about how "widgets" are implemented. I can't remember which system it was that I've seen tis one, but in the "Page Layout view" it had the ability to allow the end user to select a widget (thumbnail gallery, contact form, etc) from a list, and drag and drop it onto custom areas of the page.   I have a number of threads that are performing a long runing task. These threads themselves have child threads that do further subdivisions of work. What is the best way for me to track the following: How many total threads my process has created What the state of each thread currently is What part of my process each thread has currently got to I want to do it in as efficient a way as possible and once threads finish, I don't want any references to them hanging around becasuse I need to be freeing up memory as early as possible. I am planning something like this:- At the presentation level, I restricting the user to see only those items/content he is eligible to see with the rights he is eligible & at the database level, whenever my data is read/ written or updated I verify that the person has rights to such interactions with that part of data. So for each action there is 2 layers of security one at the view level & another at the database level. • Java2D: Fill a convex rounded polygon (QuadCurves)

  Hi, If I have a QuadCurve like this (+ = node): + + \ ./ +--?? And I fill it in Java 2D the result is something like this: (x = colored) +xxxxxxxxx+ \xxxxxx./ +--?? But I want to color the other side: + + x\ ./x xxx +--??xx xxxxxxxxxxx This succeeds by drawing a rectangle around the curve in the color I want to color the other side and then fill the curve with the background color. But this isn't good enough to fill a convex rounded (based on QuadCurves) polygon. In case of some coordinates for the rectangles (as explained in the trick I used) overlap other pieces of the polygon. Here are two images (the green area is my polygon): So, the question is simple: "How can I color a shape build of curves?" But to the answer will not be simple I think... • Restoring Mac-bootcamp-windows-partition image to Windows machine

  Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Writing my own iostream utility class: Is this a good idea?

  I have an application that wants to read word by word, delimited by whitespace, from a file. I am using code along these lines: std::istream in; string word; while (in.good()) { in>>word; // Processing, etc. ... } My issue is that the processing on the words themselves is actually rather light. The major time consumer is a set of mySQL queries I run. What I was thinking is writing a buffered class that reads something like a kilobyte from the file, initializes a stringstream as a buffer, and performs extraction from that transparently to avoid a great many IO operations. Thoughts and advice?
