  • WPF Application - Role Management Recommendations

    I have a WPF application with a WCF service layer and a SQL database. I now want to restrict elements of the application so that certain functions are only available to those users with a particular role. For example, you will only be able to navigate to the settings screen if you are an administrator. I would like a user to be a member of 1 or more authorisation groups and each authorisation group to have 1 or more roles associated. A long time ago I used AzMan (Authorisation Manager) to do a similar thing. Does anyone think that there are better approaches? Is AzMan "old news"? Alternatives? Thanks.

    Hi All, I have an application and from this application I have to start another process by shutting down the current application and after the completion of the process again start the application. The flow is as follows, suppose I have an application app.exe, and another application another.exe, so i have to do following: 1) Start app.exe 2) Stop/shutdown app.exe and start another.exe from app.exe 3) When another.exe completes, stop/shutdown another.exe and start app.exe from another.exe Anyone please provide me some clue of how to do it ?     Hi, I'm working on deploying a web application written in C# with ASP.Net Application services databases. The application runs fine on the development machine. Windows Server 2003 has been built to test the application. The database has been scripted across using MS SQL Server GUI. ASP.Net application services tables were created using an utility. The connection strings are stored in the web.config and connectionStrings.config. The application connects to the database successfully, but then it times out after 10 seconds.

    Looking for suggestions/best practices on managing error codes and messages in a multi-tiered applications. Specifically things like: Where should error codes be defined? Enum? Class? How are error messages or further details associated with the error codes? resource files? attributes on enum values, etc.? If you have a multi-tier application consisting of DAL, BLL, UI, and Common projects for example, should there be a single giant list of codes for all tiers, or are the codes extensible by project/tier? Update: Important to mention that I can't rely solely on Exceptions and custom Exception types for error reporting, as some clients for this application will be via web services (SOAP & REST) Any suggestions welcome!

  • Combining features from other projects in an ASP.NET MVC application

    Hello, I am writing an ASP.NET MVC application that combines a set of features from existing applications. The new application is suppose to use UI features and logic created (especially for this purpose) in the existing applications. For that reason I wanted to create in the existing applications some kind of a "blackbox" that I will be able to drop in my new application along with a matching connection string, and it will work independently, binding data on it's own. I thought about using partial views, but I am having trouble with passing the model data to it, since the controller of the new application should not know about the model of the existing applications. I can not use ASP.NET WebForms, since my application should be a "postback-less" application, and ASP.NET AJAX toolkit or frameworks alike are out of the question.     I am planning on using Flash Builder 4/Flex to write an AIR application which is primarily based around recording, storing and analyzing data. I'll be creating charts etc that need to update in almost real time. It's essential to me that the application be able to function without an internet connection so I need a local database of some variety, but I would also eventually like to build in online synchronization of the data where either database can be update each other based on newer information. Moreover, some type of encryption would definitely be welcome, and speed is a large concern With all that in mind, what is my best approach to try and avoid headaches down the road?

  • Which technology should I choose for 3d globe web application

    Hello, i would like to ask you for an advice. I'm currently developing application in Spring consisting of Spring CRUD application as backend, SpringMVC application as tool for management and third part is where my problem lies as I need have application that renders 3d globe which is fed by data from backend from a data set selected by user (user may switch those at will). It has to be web application (though I would prefer not to implement this in flash/flex), composed of two main parts - main part is classic web GUI where user makes his choices and second part is 3d globe which renders the globe with selected set of data visualised. My question is, what do you think is the best option to implement this? Would be SpringMVC framework usable for this kind of application? I will be gratefull for any leads or directions, thank you.

    The Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.SqlDataType enum has a value for the timestamp type but not rowversion. I'm looking for an updated version of the assembly or an alternate enum type that supports it. The existing enum has a value for Timestamp, but according to the rowversion documentation, timestamp is "deprecated and will be removed in a future version". I prefer to avoid using deprecated things :)

    I am trying to monitor an application available on remote machine using VisualVM & Visual GC. I have enabled the jmxremote on the remote side as follows: -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=8888, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false While monitoring through VisualVM, everything runs fine but VisualGC doesn't displays any stats (getting Not Supported for this JVM error). While tried to monitor one local application, VisualGC runs fine... Got success with the remote app once started jstad on the remote jvm. Is this a known issue with VisualGC...? Remote JVM - 1.5 Local JVM - 1.6

  • Application.Idle causes high CPU usage

    Hello, I use the Application.Idle event to handle toolbar status (enable/disable) etc. quite extensively. As I'm beta testing Norton AntiVirus 2011, it brought to my attention that my app that I'm developing triggered a high CPU usage warning on at least one CPU. Sure enough, I opened the task manager and watched one of the four CPU's (quad core system) go to near 100%. I thought Application.Idle was the way to handle things when the application wasn't performing CPU tasks. Why is Application.Idle spiking the CPU? Here is how I attach to the event: AddHandler Application.Idle, AddressOf OnAppIdle Been using Application.Idle for a long time, never knew it would have this issue. Using VS 2010 .NET 4 Thank you.

  • Ext.app.application object is erased after initialization

    I am trying to organize an existing extjs code in a more standard order (extjs wise). extjs version: extjs-4.0.2a. I've worked through the Extjs tutorial example and every thing went well. When I started working on the company's code I've notice there is no use of the application object there for I've added the Ext.application({...}); call. Ext.application({ name: 'FOO', appFolder: 'appFolderName', launch: function() { console.log('application was created'); } }); Upon loading the page I see the console.log output that is included in the "launch" function property - meaning the application object is created but when I look for it ("FOO" object) under the "window" object it is not there. Compering to the tutorial code the application object exist as a property of window. I encounter a few loading problems but I'm guessing the source of it all is this issue. What am I doing wrong? thanks.

    Hi, I am planning to have something like this for a website that is on Ruby on Rails. User comes and enters a bunch of names in a text field, and a queue gets created from all the names. From there the website keeps asking more details for each one from the queue until the queue finishes. Is there any queue management gem available in Ruby or I have to just create an array and keep incrementing the index in session variable to emulate a queue behaviour?

  • If my application doesn't use a lot of memory, can I ignore viewDidUnload:?

    My iPhone app generally uses under 5MB of living memory and even in the most extreme conditions stays under 8MB. The iPhone 2G has 128MB of RAM and from what I've read an app should only expect to have 20-30MB to use. Given that I never expect to get anywhere near the memory limit, do I need to care about memory warnings and setting objects to nil in viewDidUnload:? The only way I see my app getting memory warnings is if something else on the phone is screwing with the memory, in which case the entire phone would be acting silly. I built my app without ever using viewDidUnload:, so there's more than a hundred classes that I'd need to inspect and add code to if I did need to implement it.
