• Why Does Unity lag Often That I have To Manually Shutdown/Restart my Core i3 Laptop?

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu then do did some upgrades. After my next restart when I try to open Ubuntu Software Center it took about 20 seconds for the window to load then 10 more seconds before it became click able. While doing some installation of software, Unity lags like hell that every time I click any application it takes a few seconds before I can see it. Even GEdit take a lot of time to load. The worst part was when I was doing nothing to my computer. Even on that part, my computer lags. My Laptop is a Brand New Core i3 with 2GB of RAM. Unity should run perfectly on that kind of machine right? BTW: I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 for about 5 times now and still nothing changed.

  I'm working on an Excel 2010 spreadsheet and I'm trying to put in durations for some tasks I want to schedule.The interesting thing is that up until a few minutes ago, I couldn't do it.I was entering in "47:00" and excel was (and still is) converting it to "1/1/1900 23:00:00"In my mind, I want the value to be 47 minutes, but for the life of me I cannot find a fix for this behavior.Here's the weirdest thing, I haven't had this problem in the past.  Usually I put in times, add them up and they work like magic.  Put in 18 entries of 20 minutes each, total them and excel will usually tell me that it's a total of 6 hours.No problem.Today, problem.Here's the weird bit:As I was writing this post, I got it to work.By formatting the column as custom "[hh]:mm" and summing the columns, I can get total times.But the times are still being formatted into dates if I look at the underlying data.  Bottom line, if you need to calculate durations, you can, but don't look too closely at what is happening underneath the covers.

  I know this would be a beginners question (some of you might think) but I would like to know different approaches for this. I have a game with lets say 20 unlockable items, at the main menu I have a button where the user can go to an activity and view the unlockable items. So I would like for it to have a "Locked image" and under it a text telling you what the item is and maybe how to unlock it. What is the best way of going about this? And then when the item is unlocked during the game, maybe put a variable in the shared preference and check at the beginning of the activity with the unlockabled items.   I'm very very new to Linux and programming! I'm using ubuntu 11.10 - 64 bits with gcc 4.6.1 I've been searching online for an example C++ code that simply grabs video from a compliant UVC webcam and displays it simultaneously.. I need to compile it on gcc. In OpenCV, it's a very simple code less than 20 lines as I remember! I found this: http://v4l2spec.bytesex.org/spec/capture-example.html But it's very huge code relative to OpenCV code ?! and even when I tried to compile it using gcc.. I got many errors! I copied the code into a cpp file: cap.cpp then wrote in the terminal: gcc cap.cpp -o cap and the errors showed up... same errors with g++ I hope if someone can help me and tell me where can I find another simpler code? and how can I test it ?   I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and using gnome shell. I've had my machine running for the last few days, and I've been installing updates as the update manager bugs me. I just rebooted, and now gnome won't start. I can use gnome classic and unity, but gnome 3 isn't working at all. When I log in, the screen is black for maybe 20 seconds, but the cursor shows. Then, my wallpaper, but nothing else shows up. I can get a terminal with ctrl+alt+t, and I tried to run gnome-shell, but it segfaulted.

  I have a 64 bit- 20 GB Ubuntu partition which has very less usable space. So I have put Eclipse in my Ubuntu and downloaded sdks to a folder in my another partition. So when I try to start sdk manager, I am getting the following error in my console: Unexpected exception 'Cannot run program "/media/Data/android-sdks/platform-tools/adb": error=13, Permission denied' while attempting to get adb version from '/media/Data/android-sdks/platform-tools/adb' I have run chmod recursively on android-sdks directory. If I change the address for sdks to Ubuntu partition, sdk manager starts successfully. Is there anything I can do other than increasing the partition size? Thanks

  I've been running a campaign for about a year and a half now and the campaign has been setup by location. I'd have one campaign targeted for a specific region. And then I would duplicate the ad groups for each campaign. I have 5 ad groups targeting different areas of my business). This has worked reasonably well. It just occurred to me that it might easier if the campaign structure were reversed: 5 campaigns: each campaign focused on a different area of business and divided into 20+ adgroups (based on location). Will this screw up my campaign if I switch the structure? I have 10's for QS and I don't want to lose that!

  If I have an array of sorted numbers and every object is one of the numbers or multiplication. For example if the sorted array is [1, 2, 7] then the set is {1, 2, 7, 1*2, 1*7, 2*7, 1*2*7}. As you can see if there's n numbers in the sorted array, the size of the set is 2n-1. My question is how can I find for a given sorted array of n numbers all the objects in the set so that the objects is in a given interval. For example if the sorted array is [1, 2, 3 ... 19, 20] what is the most efficient algorithm to find the objects that are larger than 1000 and less than 2500 (without calculating all the 2n-1 objects)?

  I'm using Maverick with the latest available kernels on kernel.org and building them myself. Until now I've been basing my configuration off the stock Maverick kernel and accepting the make oldconfig defaults. I've been doing this for 3 major releases now so I figure I'm starting to slip behind the current "standard". I would like to re-base my kernels off the new Natty .config file. Is this available somewhere online or do I have to download the whole kernel package and extract it? Edit: I've manually pulled in the config from the latest Natty kernel package and I can confirm that I propbably should have done this sooner. A lot of differences between my old "evolved" config and the Natty default. Now if I could just do this without 20 minutes of hunting and downloading the package so I can re-base in the future.

  I have a database table that contains id, filename, userId id is unique identifier filename should also be unique table may contain 10000 records When a user uploads a file it should be entered in database with given rules: If there is no record with same filename, it should be added as it is (Ex. foobar.pdf) If there is record with same filename, it should be added as uploadedName(2).ext (foobar(2).pdf) If there are n records with same base filename (foobar), it should be added as uploadedName(n+1).ext (foobar(20).pdf) Now if foobar(2).pdf is uploaded, it should be added as foobar(2)(2).pdf & so on This pattern needs to be followed because the file is already being uploaded at client side using ajax before sending the details to server and the file hosting service follows the above rules to name the files. My solution: maintain a file that contains all the names and the number of times it has occurred. if a filename that exists in file is entered, increase occurrence count and new name is generated, else add to it to file if the new name generated is in database, add it to file and generate new name
