• New Solaris 11 Customer Maintenance Lifecycle blog

  Hi Folks, On the basis that you can't have too much of a good thing, I've started a 2nd blog, the Solaris11Life blog , to enable me to blog about all aspects of the Solaris 11 Customer Maintenance Lifecycle, including policies, best practices, resource links, clarifications, and anything else which I hope you may find useful. In my first post, I share my Solaris 11 Customer Maintenance Lifecycle presentation, which I gave at Oracle Open World and the recent Deutsche Oracle Anwendergruppe (DOAG) conference. I'll be posting lots more there in the coming week as time allows, including secret handshake stuff on how to interpret IPS FMRI version strings. • Are there efforts to build a collaboratively edited HTML/JS/DOM reference?

  W3Schools has a reputation of being incomplete, sometimes incorrect, and ridden with advertising; still, when looking to look up some things or link to documentation when answering a SO question, it still is the only handy cross-browser resource. There are other resources like the Mozilla Developer Network that is doing an increasingly great job documenting JavaScript, and the legendary and great Quirksmode. But they, as brilliant as they are, cover only parts of the areas I am talking about, and provide no community editing and quality control options. Is anybody aware of efforts to create a collaboratively edited, cross-browser HTML/CSS/JavaScript/DOM encyclopedia? If you will, I'm thinking of a challenger to W3Schools like SO was to Experts Exchange. (I thought this more suitable on Programmers than on SO proper - please correct me if I'm wrong.)

  Hello!.As you may notice :), this is my first post on geekswithblogs.com . I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. The code will either be explained on its entirety or will be posted on a link that has an explained working sample for you guys to test and learn from.My posts will be in English, and I am an intermediate English speaker/writer so bare with me if it's not perfect sometimes, I am always learning something new though.I hope this get to be a useful resource for anyone interested. • Has anyone got the Mist engine to work on gtk3? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What GTK+ 3 engines are available? I've just upgraded my xubuntu installation to Precise and run into gtk3 theme problems - my theme based on the Mist engine doesn't work for gtk3 apps. There's a package gtk3-engines in the GNOME PPA that includes Mist, has anyone got this to work? It has a themes/Mist/gtk3.0 folder with a gtkrc file but it doesn't seem to work for me. Even if someone just has an idea where I could find more help on this I'd be grateful (is there even any documentation on making themes in gtk3?)

• IDirect3DDevice9Ex and D3DPOOL_MANAGED?

  So I wanted to switch to IDirect3DDevice9Ex, purely for the SetFrameLatency function, as fullscreen vsynced D3D seemed to produce noticable input lag. But then it tells me 'ha ha ha! now you can't use D3DPOOL_MANAGED!': Direct3D9: (ERROR) :D3DPOOL_MANAGED is not valid with IDirect3DDevice9Ex Is this really as unpleasant as it looks (when you're relying quite heavily on managed resources) - or is there a simple solution? If it really does mean manual management of everything (reloading all static textures, VBs, and IBs on a device reset), is it worth the hassle, will IDirect3DDevice9Ex bring enough benefit to make it worth writing a new resource manager? Starting to think I must be doing something wrong, due to this: Direct3D9: (ERROR) :Lock is not supported for textures allocated with POOL_DEFAULT unless they are marked D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC. So if I put my (static) textures in POOL_DEFAULT, they need flagging as D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC, just because I lock them once to load the data in?

  I want to develop a simple app for the Windows Phone 7 platform. It's basically a vocabulary based game that involves the user moving word tiles from one area to another to score points. I want to know what is the best way of tying the UI to the game's backend? I saw the Windows Phone 7 jumpstart videos, there they touch up on Data Binding but don't really go into any depth. I'm a newbie and don't have any experience with designing the architecture for a phone app, It'd be great if someone could explain what steps I should be taking or guide me to a resource from where I could learn more.

• Will a Wubi install of Ubuntu effect my Windows installation in anyway? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What are the benefits of a disk install vs. Wubi? And can I migrate my settings easily? Having never tried a Linux OS before, I want to dabble and take a look at one. • forked-daapd without avahi

  I'm trying to setup forked-daapd, but i'd prefer it if i could run it without avahi (or rather define my own avahi service instead of using the dbus api). The reason is that i want a netatalk share for my time machine backups and a samba share for the symbolic link support (netatalk doesn't support symlinks). Those two are defined as different services in avahi. To make that work, i have to disable avahi's dbus api, or else netatalk tends to take over all the services (osx prefers afp over smb). If I now try to start forked-daapd, it just doesn't. Forked-daapd requires avahi's dbus api to be enabled and running. Is there some sort of way around this limitation, so that i can manually define my own daap service in avahi. Maybe something like enabling but ignoring the dbus in avahi, or launching a duplicate avahi daemon with a different config file?

  Kind of a REST lightweight here... Wondering which url scheme is more appropriate for a stock market data app (BTW, all queries will be GETs as the client doesn't modify data): Scheme 1 examples: /stocks/ABC/news /indexes/XYZ/news /stocks/ABC/time_series/daily /stocks/ABC/time_series/weekly /groups/ABC/time_series/daily /groups/ABC/time_series/weekly Scheme 2 examples: /news/stock/ABC /news/index/XYZ /time_series/stock/ABC/daily /time_series/stock/ABC/weekly /time_series/index/XYZ/daily /time_series/index/XYZ/weekly Scheme 3 examples: /news/stock/ABC /news/index/XYZ /time_series/daily/stock/ABC /time_series/weekly/stock/ABC /time_series/daily/index/XYZ /time_series/weekly/index/XYZ Scheme 4: Something else??? The point is that for any data being requested, the url needs to encapsulate whether an item is a Stock or an Index.   Possible Duplicate: How do I install Ubuntu to a USB key? How to copy an Ubuntu install from one laptop to another I have found urls to install ubuntu to a HD. But my current system has been upgraded and updated so often that it does not resemble anything on the web or on my drive disks. So giving my a url to how to install ubuntu will fail. Give me instead 'how to install my current Linux/Ubuntu based system (11.04) and all the upgrades to my external HD. Or alternately how to back up the OS into a bootable external HD. I am looking for either urls or a very complete explanation.

  Possible Duplicate: Why should you get MCTS certified? Are microsoft certificates useful for anything more than beeing a bonus on job interviews? I do believe in formal training but i'm sceptical about their value, specialy if i dont' take classes (not enough time/money) but study at home/online and than go directly to take exams. Would you recomend taking preparation classes, or are they just waste of time? (or perhaps is whole certification thing waste of time?) • Looking for a CDN

  Most of the CDN's that I've seen require you to upload your content in advance. I'm looking for a CDN that, upon receiving a request for a resource it hasn't seen, will contact my application server. If the application server returns something, it should be sent to the user and then cached in the CDN. If not, it should just return a 404. If the user requests an unexpired item, the CDN should just serve it without bothering my app server. Does anything like this exist? Is there a way to get Cloudfront to work like this?

• Know a little of a lot or a lot of a little? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is it better to specialize in a single field I like, or expand into other fields to broaden my horizons? My buddy and I who have been programming for 13 years or so were talking this morning and a question that came up was is it better to know a little of a lot (i.e. web, desktop, VB.Net, C#, jQuery, PHP, Java etc.) or is it better to know a lot of a little (meaning expert in something). The context of this question is what makes someone a senior programmer? Is it someone that has been around the block a few times and has been in many different situations or one that is locked in to a specific technology that is super knowledgeable in that one technology? I see pro's and con's of both scenarios.. Just wondering what others thought.

• Serious Forum Design Issue

  I want to launch a school forum for a country. I'm in dilemma as to how to design this forum. Country will have many states, each state will have cities, each city will have many schools. Each school will have many classes( 1st - 12th). It looks like this: States - Cities - Schools - Classes I want to make each class as forum. Now the biggest problems are two fold: If I were to list even 1000 schools it will create huge number of forums and I don't think forum softwares(PHPBB, MyBB) are designed to support these many Secondly creating and maintaining huge forums is also very difficult. Ideally I'd like to duplicate existing forum hierarchy to new one. I've done lot of search and I've found that such type of forums are infeasible and such designs don't work. Leave alone the fact the nobody uses such a forum. Keeping in mind this, how should I go about designing this forum?

• Menu bars are a basic light gray after installing graphics card driver. [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Desktop forgets theme? Hi, I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far. Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place? Below is a screenshot of my computer: (This is also the first time I've installed Ubuntu on my computer, and am keen for it to work.)

I have made some minecraft client mods, but i've started a server a mounth ago and i want to make a mod for it, but i cant find any tutorial on the internet. How can then the other guys making those mods for minecraft server know how they are going to do? Do they try forward as i tryed or are they doing something else.
