• SAP or Navision? Career Path

  This could be tricky to ask; I may or may not ask this question here but I thought to give it a try. I've been in Software Industry since 2002 and now it has been a time that I'm at Senior level where I normally code, lead and define the architect; giving technical solutions to the management is one of my asset that I've earned during my services. Now it is the time to define the road map for the future, $$$. I am not in favor of Project Management roles. I've been thinking of going through the ERP and my current company does provide me an option to go for Navision/ Microsoft Dynamics. They are currently on 4.0 but they are planning to move for 2009 and also to build one of their own plug-in. Indeed the option is good because Microsoft is trying to accomplish the market for Dynamics products. However, they have less success in Australia. Now, Another option is with SAP where person can go with 200 K $ a year. Where as I'd doubt that if the same kind of growth, financial, is available for Microsoft geek. What is your opinion on Navision or SAP? If I try to completely move to SAP it could be bit challenging as market will consider me a fresher. However the return is quite good. Where in case of Microsoft, I think technology changes so fast that there is a less chance to grow in, within, the same experience; in other word, if any new framework comes in .net then market look for that person who knows this new framework and not .net But in case of SAP, where the base remain same and chances are to grab more money from the market. What would you do if you were me? In stackoverflow - Navision questions are 20+ where in SAP 200+///?? :-)

• How to choose cell to put entity in in an uniform grid used for broad phase collision detection?

  I'm trying to implement the broad phase of my collision detection algorithm. My game is an arcade game with lot of moving entities in an open space with relatively equivalent sizes. Regarding the above specifications, i decided to use an uniform grid for space partitioning. The problem i have right know is how to efficiently choose in which cells an entity should be added. ATM i'm doing something like this: for (int x = 0; x < gridSize; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < gridSize; y++) { GridCell cell = grid[x][y]; cell.clear(); //remove the previously added entities for (int i = 0; i < entities.size(); i++) { Entity e = entities.get(i); if (cell.isEntityOverlap(e)) { cell.add(e); } } } } The isEntityOverlap is a simple method i added my GridCell class. public boolean isEntityOverlap(Shape s) { return cellArea.intersects(s); } Where cellArea is a Rectangle. cellArea = new Rectangle(x, y, CollisionGrid.CELL_SIZE, CollisionGrid.CELL_SIZE); It works but it's damn slow. What would be a fast way to know all the cells an entity overlaps? Note: by "it works" i mean, the entities are contained in the good cells over the time after movements etc.

• How To Backup Of MySQL Database Using PhpMyAdmin

  It is very important to do backup of your MySql database, you will probably realize it when it is too late. A lot of web applications use MySql for storing the content. This can be blogs, and a lot of other things. When you have all your content as html files on your web server it is very easy to keep them safe from crashes, you just have a copy of them on your own PC and then upload them again after the web server is restored after the crash. All the content in the MySql database must also be backed up. If you have spent a lot of time making the content and it is only stored in the Mysql server, you will feel very bad if it gets lost for ever. Backing it up once every month or so makes sure you never loose too much of your work in case of a server crash, and it will make you sleep better at night. It is easy and fast, so there is no reason for not doing it. Step 1: Log into phpMyAdmin on your server. Step2: You can select the database that you would like to backup from the drop-down menu called Database. Step 3: A new page will be loaded in phpMyAdmin showing the selected database. In order to proceed with the backup click on the Export tab. Step 4: The options that you should select apart from the default ones are Save as file which will save the file locally to your computer in an .sql format and Add DROP TABLE which will add the drop table functionality if the table already exists in the database backup as shown below. Step 5: Click on the Go button to start the export/backup procedure for your database. A download window will pop up prompting for the exact place where you would like to save the file on your local computer. It is possible that the download starts automatically. This depends on your browser’s settings.

• Combining Code Review with Trust Metrics

  I don't get the chance to partake of it at work. But I love the idea of code review. Especially of online open source code review like Gerrit Code Review. I love what Trust Metrics have done for forums and collective intelligences sites on the internet like stackexchange, reddit, and wikipedia. Would it be possible to combine the two and come up with an open source project management system. Something that ends up being mostly community driven. Perhaps a kind of wikipedia of code for a project. Where submitters become popular/trusted by having lots of patches reviewed favoriably by others, and accepted into the trunk. And popular/trusted submitters get their patchs accepted faster/easier. I'm looking for some opinions on the idea, or perhaps pointers to where its been done before, if thats the case. This might leave the lead maintiner little more to do than: wrangle the direction of the project by fast-tracking or vetoing specific patches. settling disputes when the CI tests break, or fixing it himself. Is design by community worse than design by committee?

• What are the best ways to professionally increase your online presence?

  I've been hunting around the job market for a little bit now and I've been shocked by some of the things I am seeing. Software developers who make themselves more "known" online are getting far more and far better positions than people competing against them who are not as well "known" online. After doing some reading on the subject I realized that I actually shouldn't be so shocked by this. We are living in the most fast paced era of mankind and employers want to be able to learn as much as they can about a potential employee before they hire them. The easier we as software developers make it for us to be found it seems the better are chances of landing that dream job become. In some cases, employers are even finding us instead of us applying to them. So what are some of the best ways for me as a software developer to increase my online presence? I already hang around stack exchange sites such as programmers and stack overflow increasing my rep whenever I can. I maintain many open source projects as both a committer and project owner on Google Code and Github. I have a Twitter account, a website, and a blog. What else can I do to give myself a bigger online presence? Additionally, are there any good do's and don'ts for handling your web presence? Bashing your employer is an obvious don't but I'm interested in everything from the most basic to most subtle suggestions to give yourself a more appealing online presence. • ATI Catalyst driver 12.8 is not using hardware acceleration on Precise

  I've been using Ubuntu and ATI Catalyst for years. On my clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 I've noticed that Catalyst 12.6 and then 12.8 are not actually using my HD5750 GPU for hardware acceleration - high CPU usage, zero GPU load. Everything installed correctly with no hassles, fglrxinfo and vainfo are correct as per this HowTo for Precise. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 with Catalyst 12.6 installation on the same hardware which does use the GPU - low CPU usage, high GPU load when transcodeing video files or playing video content. The VA-API drivers are not installed on the 10.04 build. They are not mentioned in this HowTo for Lucid. fgl_glxgears frame rates on Precise are a fifth of the rates on Lucid. LUCID jw@Kworld:~$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 16867 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3373.400 FPS 12523 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2504.600 FPS 13763 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2752.600 FPS PRECISE jw@NewWorld12:~$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 12905 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2581.000 FPS 3230 frames in 5.0 seconds = 646.000 FPS 517 frames in 5.0 seconds = 103.400 FPS 518 frames in 5.0 seconds = 103.600 FPS 6489 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1297.800 FPS This is glxgears running in fullscreen. In Lucid (10.04) I can't see the gears, they are spinning so fast, but in Precise (12.04) they are really sluggish. Has anyone else noticed a problem like this? Cheers, Jack.

• login takes long time

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 from past 12 days. In the beginning login was fast enough after I put the password it hardly takes 3 to 4 sec to enter in desktop, but now its taking like more that 40 sec to show desktop after entering password. whats the problem, is there any solution? • How to restore curropted installation?

  I have a laptop with dead battery that when there is no current connected to it turns critical so fast and in the energy management in ubuntu, when the battery is critical, there are 2 options: shutdown and hibernate witch is in grey (unclickable), so I have no choice but to chose immediate shutdown, there is no standby even if it is an option in the screen behavior. • can connect to wifi router but not the internet 12.10

  I believe i have tried every trick in the book ! I am able to access my router from my ubuntu desktop but not even a single site on the internet. i have installed the drivers for my pci wifi card following this procedure : http://steveswinsburg.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/how-to-install-a-d-link-dwa-525-wireless-network-card-in-ubuntu-10-04/ Earlier it didn't connect to the internet and kept prompting me for the password. after i installed the driver it got connected ! but now i cant access the internet and can only access my router. i deleted the resolv.conf file. I have also tried the "rkill" command and it shows it is unlocked. I have even tried pinging the ip's 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 and i get replies from both. I have also added them on my wifi configuration setup on ubuntu desktop. I am new to ubuntu but learning fast :-) These are the things i don't like about ubuntu, the simple tasks are difficult for a person coming from windows. I am using ubuntu 12.10. please reply at the earliest i would be very thankful.

Can someone help me? This is driving me insane! EDIT: for lspci -nn | grep 0280: 03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4353] (rev 01) I can see the networks available, but when I try to connect, it gets stuck in a loop: tries to connect, fails, tries again, fails again and so on... EDIT 2: After a long break from this problem, I've just run a few tests again and found out that, although my macbuntu still fails to connect to my home wi-fi network, it works just fine at my university... Does that help in anyway? My home network is managed by a dual-band (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) 802.11n cisco e4200 wi-fi router.

• Dlink DWA-643 ExpressCard / Atheros AR5008 can't connect to wifi networks

  I've just purchased a D-Link DWA-643 Xtreme N ExpressCard Notebook Adapter - but it can't connect to my wireless network The card is listed on the FSF website and - refer links below: http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/index_html/net/wireless/index_html/cards.html http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=550 Ubuntu see the card as using the Atheros AR5008 chipset - refer image below The card lights up and I can see that available wifi networks using this card - so it seems to 'just work' on ubuntu 12.04 but when i try and connect to my networks - it fails I've tried setting the network to all the different options (WEP, WPA2, no encryption, etc.. b/g/n ) but ubuntu sill cant connect to it I've also installed wicd but still couldn't connect Has anyone got a DWA-643 to work in Ubuntu? Or does anyone have any suggestion on how to get it to connect?? Any help would be greatly appreciated Note: the laptop has built in wifi but its broadcom, works but with dialup speed connection - and i've had nothign but trouble using the boardcom drivers so purchased the FSF recommended PCI expresscard as i hoped it would 'just work' on the latest Ubuntu i've have tried to disable the built in wifi - broadcom - but even with the broadcom uninstall and unavailable it didnt help the dlink to connect previously I had MAC address filtering on the router - i've added the dlinks MAC - and also disabled MAC address filtering - still no luck lspci output below: 18:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. • Is "as long as it works" the norm?

  Hi, My last shop did not have a process. Agile essentially meant they did not have a plan at all about how to develop or manage their projects. It meant "hey, here's a ton of work. Go do it in two weeks. We're fast paced and agile." They released stuff that they knew had problems. They didn't care how things were written. There were no code reviews--despite there being several developers. They released software they knew to be buggy. At my previous job, people had the attitude as long as it works, it's fine. When I asked for a rewrite of some code I had written while we were essentially exploring the spec, they denied it. I wanted to rewrite the code because code was repeated in multiple places, there was no encapsulation and it took people a long time to make changes to it. So essentially, my impression is this: programming boils down to the following: Reading some book about the latest tool/technology Throwing code together based on this, avoiding writing any individual code because the company doesn't want to "maintain custom code" Showing it and moving on to the next thing, "as long as it works." I've always told myself that next job I'm going to get a better shop. It never happens. If this is it, then I feel stuck. The technologies always change; if the only professional development here is reading the latest MS Press technology book, then what have you built in 10 years but a superficial knowledge of various technologies? I'm concerned about: Best way to have professional standards How to develop meaningful knowledge and experience in this situation

These benchmark results demonstrate that the Gemalto Mobile Payment Platform is designed to meet the needs of any deployment scale, whether targeting 5 or 100 million subscribers. Oracle Solaris 11 DTrace technology helped to pinpoint performance issues and tune the system accordingly to achieve optimal computation resources utilization.
