• Redirect users to internal webpage on first visit

  I have a lan of maybe 20 - 30 computers, and a Windows server 2003 server on hand (I can also run any x86 Linux distro). What I am trying to do, is to redirect users to a webserver inside the LAN the first time they visit certain domains. For example, the first time a user visits "google.com", they will be redirected to 192.168.1.2 (a webserver, where they will be shown a custom webpage), attempts after that will go to google. Pretty much what I am trying to do, is to provide a captive server like service, showing people a custom webpage the first time they try to access certain websites (but not others). I'm pretty flexable on how this can be done, as long as it works. Can you guys give me an idea on how to approach this problem? I am looking for (hopefully) a free solutions. Thanks

• PHP5 module makes Apache 1.3 segfault

  I am trying to get PHP4 and 5 to work with Apache 1.3. PHP4 is compiled as a module and currently works fine, although Apache does display the following warning upon starting: Loaded DSO libphp4.so uses plain Apache 1.3 API, this module might crash under EAPI! (please recompile it with -DEAPI) So I compiled PHP5 using the latest source. I get the same warning, twice now for each PHP module, but then Apache gets a segmentation fault when loading the PHP4 + PHP5 modules. I have tried compiling PHP5 with apxs and without. It does appear to be using the -DEAPI flag. Maybe this isn't related to the segfault. The flags I am using to configure PHP5: ./configure --with-mysql --with-zlib --disable-cgi --with-apxs=/www/bin/apxs

• Adding multiple gradients to object in Adobe Illustrator

  Hi, I have an object which is a path (a nose to be specific). Now I want both a linear gradient and a radial gradient to be added to the object. So these must be separate gradient objects I guess, and I can't find a way to add multiple separate gradients to a complete path so do I duplicate the object and then apply a new gradient to each object? And what would the layer transparency features look like? Would the 'normal' overlay of the layers work? I am afraid of multiple shadows creating double dark regions, but maybe that is as its supposed to be if you think in terms of classical art and draw shadows in terms of each light obstruction.

• PHP vs Batch file for mysql cronjob?

  Hi, My server details: OS: Windows Server 2003 IIS6 Plesk 8.xx installed (currently using Plesk to set the cronjob) I need your advice. I have 2 methods: Method 1: Using php + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (each databases has around about 25mb) Method 2: Using batch + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (same, each databases has around about 25mb) My questions: Whats the difference of using php file and batch file for cronjob? Which method is better in term of backup speed and send email, and (maybe)safety (e.g., lesser file corrupt occurance)? If i set the cronjob hourly, will it effect my web performances? I mean, lets say my website has 100++ users online now, and each user making transaction to MySQL, when I perform backup at my web peak hour, will it decrease the performances, like the loading speed, prone to errors etc?? (sorry for my bad english) P.S: If you need my php and batch file code, please ask me to post it here. I didnt post it now is because, its very simple and standard code.

• GPO best practices : Security-Group Filtering Versus OU

  Good afternoon everyone, I'm quite new to Active Directory stuff. After upgraded Functional level of our AD from 2003 to 2008 R2 (I need it to put fine-grained password policy), I then start to reorganized my OUs. I keep in mind that a good OU organization facilitate application of GPO (and maybe GPP).But in the end, it feels more natural for me to use Security-group filtering (from Scope tab) to apply my policies, instead of direct OU. Do you think it is a good practice or should I stick to OU ? We are a small organisation with 20 users and 30-35 computers. So, we got a simple OU tree, but more subtle split with security-groups. The OU tree doesn't contain any objects except at the bottom level. Each bottom level OU contains Computers,Users, and of course security groups. • Why no "da-doomp" (disconnect notification sound) sometimes when unplugging wireless mouse receiver?

  Sometimes (maybe one case in 3), when I unplug the wireless mouse receiver on my Sony VGN-CS215J laptop, there is no "da-doomp" sound, even after a minute or two. And if I plug the receiver back in there is no corresponding "du-dump" sound and the mouse is still (immediately) "live". This can happen when the activity light is out and there's nothing obviously going on -- it's not simply that the box is too busy. Other times one gets the expected behavior (and usually I get the correct behavior if I plug the receiver back in a few seconds and then unplug it after a "failure"). The reason this is significant is that if I get no "da-doomp" then the laptop will not sleep properly -- it will go to sleep initially, but then reawaken a few minutes later inside my laptop case and proceed to run the battery down (and no doubt overheat the unit). Any ideas?

• Recursive reset file permissions on Windows

  There is a big, complex directory structure on a relative big NTFS partition. Somebody managed to put very bad security privileges onto it - there are directories with randomly given/denied permissions, etc. I already run into permission bugs multiple times, and I found insecure permission settings multiple times (for example, write permissions for "Everyone", or false owners). I don't have time to check everything by hand (it is big). But luckily, my wishes are very simple. The most common: read/write/execute on anything for me, and maybe read for Everyone. Is it possible to somehow remove all security data from a directory and giving my (simple) wishes to overwrite everything there? On Unix, I used a chown -R ..., chmod -R ... command sequence. What is its equivalent on Windows?

• Samba 3.3 or later on Slackware 12 - how do I make this happen?

  I'm trying to upgrade the Samba server on a Slackware 12 box to serve as PDC for Windows 7 32bit machines (it now has a 3.0.3 and does the job for Win XP machines, but 7 refuses to join the domain - I'm posting this after having tried a few dozen hacks on the windows registry). I'm a newbie on Slackware (I usually dwell in Ubuntu) so I may be going about this the wrong way but this is what I've done so far: The Samba wiki has a couple of hacks for the registry and also seems to suggest a version later than 3.3 (though not in so many words) http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7 Having scoured the net for later Samba binaries for Slackware 12 and gotten precisely nowhere, I decided that maybe I could compile the blessed thing. But I keep on getting compiler errors. I'm using this SlackBuild script http://ftp.twaren.net/Linux/slackware/slackware-current/source/n/samba/samba.SlackBuild Is there a better way to make this happen? (without upgrading the base system? it has so many finely tuned things running that I don't want to mess with the rest of the setup).

• Mysqldump causes "Too many connections"

  A scheduled backup using mysqldump on one of our databases is causing Too many connections. The database is of both InnoDB and MyISAM tables with size of around 500Mb. The Too many connections appears for about 2-3 minutes We understand that mysqldump locks the tables and causes all other queries and connections to pile up and jam the mysql server. We need frequent backups and we cannot afford server downtime or putting websites in maintenance mode while doing it. Our websites are global and traffic is high all the time so its hard to find a moment for backups. How can we avoid downtime during backups?Is there maybe a way to use mysqldump in way that it will not lock all tables at the same time?Is there an alternative to backing up with mysqldump?

• SMS reminder for Windows Mobile?

  A lot of mobile phones can be setup to emit a reminder beep every few minutes if you have an unread SMS. So when you miss the receive signal of the sms (because you've been in the restroom) you'll hear a gentle beep every few minutes, so you know you received an sms while you've been busy. Is there a way to get this behaviour on windows mobile (6.5)? I found nothing to activate this in the menu, but maybe it's hidden somewhere. • Linux software to maintain old/backup versions of directory tree

  I am replacing an old Linux file server serving NFS and CIFS. For the new server (still serving CIFS and NFS), I would like to have software that automatically and efficiently maintains old revisions of files in parallel trees, so that they can be accessed by users without special tools. I am looking for software that is akin to Time Machine or Flyback, but works well on a server. The dataset is some 10000 files weighing maybe 60 GB. Changes are relatively few, usually less than 100 files changes daily. Using LVM snapshots will not cut it, as the old revisions must reside on a separate set of disks from the live data. Edit: To clarify: keeping old revisions is non-vital addition to the solution, so any suggestion will have to stay in the range of some hundred euros.

• Skype Optimization - Port Forwarding on a Router

  I was watching this Video which talked about using port-forwarding to optimize your LAN for skype calls. According to the video, as explained in the first couple of minutes in the video, the reason you would need optimization is because if the person your call has a firewall setup, your connection has to go-through a third-party computer to connect to them. I believe I stated this correct (maybe not). None the less, my question is this: do both parties on the call need to enable port forwarding to optimize skype, or just one party (person)?

• Adding entries to the context menu and organising them in Windows 7

  So I've got the hang of adding keys to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\Shell, and I know I can add a string entitled 'Position' and change its value to position the entry I've made, but I can't figure out how to do three things (nor can I find anything guiding me in doing them): 1) How to put a bar on either side of an entry to separate it from other entries 2) How to position them in an exact place in the context menu (eg. above or below a certain other entry) 3) How to make an entry that brings up another list of entries (like the 'View' and 'Sort by' entries that are already there when you right-click in Windows Explorer I wasn't sure whether this goes in StackOverflow or SuperUser, but I thought maybe it goes here since I'm using Regedit rather than coding it (though I am aware you can right a .reg file and then execute it to install these sorts of things). • Looking for the best ec2 setup for 3 sites totaling in 1.5 mil in traffic monthly

  I am looking to consolidate our current aws setup of 2 Large ubuntu ec2 servers and 2 large RDS server for our 3 websites that have a total of about 1.5 million hits a month and increasing every month with the majority of traffic (1 mil) to one forum site in the group and the rest of traffic to an ecommerce site and a small wordpress site. So here is my question/thought? Would it be better for us to combine the two ec2 large servers to just one and same with the 2 RDS servers so we run all three sites off one large ec2 and one RDS. -or- Should we setup maybe 2-3 smaller ec2 servers load balenced and a single RDS. -or- Something completely different setup? One concern is that if one site crashes it takes with it the others. It happened in the past but I am pretty sure its because of the forum software and not the server setup. -john

• Feed Reader's - Looking for some suggestions

  I am doing my best to make it a point to keep an eye on some blogs of people in my industry, and am looking for a good feed reader. I use chrome. I live in chrome, and if I am not in Chrome, I am using xterm. Yet, I do get my tweets in Pidgin and do all my talking discussion from that. Maybe it makes sense to integrate something in that? I see web feed readers as a bit too distant to make good use of it (eg, have to open a page, and less 'in your face'). Although, I am a big fan of google stuff and use google apps and google voice and google cals and google docs, etc.. So how is feedburner? I like to preserver time. It'd be interesting if I could read my feeds offline on my laptop or ChromeOS CR-48 with offline websites? Well, would love to hear what you guys are doing and suggest.

• powerpoint make computer shut down on dell optiplex 760

  At my office we upgraded group of computers to windows 7 + office 2010, few of us have problem that when we work on powerpoint - once in a while the computer suddenly shut down (with out any message). Some of us - has no such problems. We checked and fount that the people who experience problems - use Dell Optiplex 760 PC, and everyone that have no problems use other models. We also found out that the processors of the 760's are not the same - some are Intel E7400 and one is Intel E8400, so I suspect that maybe the mother board is the problem Does any one no this problem? • Daemon/Software that takes changes from sql database and applies them to unix config files

  I was wondering if there was a unix daemon available that would be capable of something like this: admin adds an IP entry to a DB; daemon finds change after wait interval and manipulates ifconfig/config files I was thinking maybe there is a plugin for cfengine that might be able to do this, but I couldn't find any. I mean this would be a fairly easy thing to script up in perl, but why re-invent the wheel if theres already something out there that is better than what my limited programming abilities can make. Lastly, if it worked on FreeBSD that'd be great.

• HDD vanished after wakeup from standby

  In my computer I got two hard drives: One 80GB Intel X25 Postville SSD for the system and a 1,5TB Sata HDD for data. When I put the system into standby, and wake it up again, roundabout 50% of the time the 1,5TB HDD is not found. It just vanished from the system (wreaking havok to all programs running which had open files on it). Even going into the system management and refreshing the drives does not find the lost HDD. There are no messages about this in the event log. After a warm reboot the hdd is found again, just like it should. The system is a Shuttle SP35P2 Pro with 8GB Ram and DualCore CPU, OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. I even set up the OS anew, didn't help. Any ideas what might cause this? How to debug, or maybe even fix it?

• Terribly slow Apache2 on VM Virtualbox

  I just launched VM Virtualbox with guest Ubuntu Server on host Windows 8. Both 64bit. Everything works perfectly fine. Maybe it's because I'm not using any X... Htop shows ~25% of memory usage, everything is fine, but not Apache2. Normally it's fine, but when I send request from my browser on host (networking mode set to Bridge mode), Apache2 is turning into 1-minute-long loading process with 100% CPU time. Any ideas how to debug it? Any ideas about solving this throat problem?

• Can't login into Fedora 14 (XFCE) desktop. For the second time.

  Hello. I'm experiencing a problem with my Fedora 14 XFCE spin, which doesn't seem to let me pass the login screen: I enter my password for my user record, authentication passes (no 'Authentication Failure' message, which was when I tried to login as 'root' without root login enabled), and the screen becomes black (command line) for a couple of seconds and (voila!) my login screen emerges again. I did nothing to cause that, it just suddenly logged me out when I was editing window manager settings via XFCE's built-in GUI utility (choosing window decorations style, from the listbox on the left) For the first time, I had to boot from live CD and do a fresh install, but I don't really want to do that again :) Is there some way to repair this (maybe login via command line and reset window manager settings, I don't know really)?   hello, i'm currently thinking of a clean way of how to bring an ftp server down for maintenance. i wonder, if anybody out there could give me some hints of how to solve this: i don't want to interrupt any current uploads, but want to block any new connects / uploads and wait, till uploads have finished, before taking down the ftp server is there a way of dynamically prevent user-logins and show a message eg.: "ftp currently down for maintenance" when a user tries to log in? are my thoughts on this very uncommon or how do others handle this -- i feel, that just halting ftp server and killing any current uploads is not the right way for this ... i use proftpd (with SQL backend) btw, maybe there are some specific solutions for this -- or are there any generic tools to achieve this? many thanks!

• Fedora12, XP and connection sharing via iptables

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines. • Crypto-Analysis of keylogger logs and config file. Possible?

  Is there anyway Encryption on an unidentified file can be broken(file in question: config file and log files from ardamax keylogger). These files date back all the way to 2008. I searched everywhere, nothing on slashdot, nothing on google. Ardamax Keyviewer? Should I just write to Ardamax? I am at a loss of what to do. I feel comprimised. Anyone managed to decrpyt files with Crypto-analysis? More Information-- There are log files in the folder and a configuration file, "akv.cfg". Is it possible to decrypt the files and maybe getting the attackers email address used to receive the keylogger logs? I've Checked ardamax.com. They have an built-in log viewer. But its unavailable for download. If superuser isn't the proper place to ask, know where I might get help?

• How to backup boot information of a PC's Hard Disk?

  I just installed Windows 7 on a partition of my hard disk and I'm planning to install Vista and Windows 8 on other partitions on the same disk, and maybe a few Linux distributions too. Before I install other Operating Systems, I would like to backup the boot information, just to make sure I can get back to Windows 7 in case anything goes wrong with the booting data. I already made a backup of the MBR using MBRFix but I'm wondering if I should save some Boot Sector from the Windows 7 partition? I noticed that Windows Vista install DVD has a "bootrec.exe" utility in the recovery console (Shift+F10) and it has some options to rewrite the boot sector of the partitions. Therefore I wonder if there is any utility (preferably on Hiren's BootCD) to backup/write the boot sector I would also like to know how to backup the boot data of a Linux installation
