• osx 10.6.3 how does apache config work?

  hi, just got a macbook pro 15" so i'm unfamiliar with how the filesystem is laid out. i noticed when in my filesystem that i've got a few paths specifying httpd.conf /etc/apache2/httpd.conf /opt/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf the confs are different in lots of ways-- e.g. user, group, server_root, modules that are loaded, etc. the apache2 folders themselves also greatly differ. it seems that the one getting used is either /etc/apache2/httpd.conf or /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf i'm wondering if i might have messed up my system after installing some packages (php5, django, etc) via macports and maybe ended up with 2 apache2 instances. my questions are hence: - which httpd.conf is the one being used ? - what are the other files for? thanks

• debsum and actual md5

  I have discovered that debsum maybe does not work as i thought. I ran debsum -as And actually i did not see sshd binary in that list. • Two network cards in one Windows 7 PC

  Hi, I've upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. On Vista I used to run one network card (Intel 82566DC -2 Gigabit) for my internet which was connected to a Dovado USB mobile broadband router connected to a 3G modem. The IP setup on the card is set on DHCP. The second card (3com Ethernet link) was used to connect to our town's local WUG (wireless user group) and all worked fine. Now the problem I have with Windows 7 is that when I connect to the internet with the (Intel) first card, the internet work fine but as soon as I connect the second card to the wug my internet drops. If I then disconnect the first card (internet one) and try to connect to the wug it works. It seems that the two cards are fighting each other. Is there maybe something I can do to fix the problem? As you probably can gather from this post is that I am not an expert on PC's so please if you do answer do I in simple terms. :) Thanks, Martin

• How can I make it difficult to install a new operating system on a certain computer?

  I want to host a website on a desktop computer running Ubuntu with a Windows virtual machine. I will give away the computer in exchange for a number of months of remote web hosting. I want to add some kind of lock (hardware or otherwise) so that the end users will have difficulty just reinstalling Windows and using the machine as they want, in contradiction to the contract. Ideally, I'd want the machine to die if reinstallation of the OS is attempted. It doesn't have to be completely insurmountable, but it has to be difficult enough to prevent casual reinstallation. Perhaps on bootup the system can check whether certain files exist on the computer and refuse to boot if they do not. I don't know if this is possible, but maybe BIOS is password protected, and searches for files before boot up. The files it looks for could be date sensitive, i.e. require remote replacement on a schedule.

• Git version control with multiple users

  Hello, i am a little bit lost with this issue, let me explain you my problem: I want to setup a git repository, three of four users will contribute, so they need to download the code and shall be able to upload their changes to the server or update their branch with the latest modifications. So, i setup a linux machine, install git, setup the repository, then add the users in order to enable the acces throught ssh. Now my question is, What's next?, the git documentation is a little bit confusing, i.e. when i try from a dummy user account to clone the repository i got: xxx@xxx-desktop:~/Documentos/git/test$ git clone -v ssh://[email protected]/pub.git Initialized empty Git repository in /home/xxx/Documentos/git/test/pub/.git/ [email protected]'s password: fatal: '/pub.git' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly is that a problem of privileges? need any special configuration? i want to avoid using git-daemon or gitosis, sorry, maybe my question sound silly but git is powerfull but i admit not so user friendly. • CLI way of uninstalling a Windows update?

  Basically, what can be achieved by going to Control Panel Uninstall a Program View Installed Updates Right Click Uninstall, but through the command line? Looking for a way that works across the Windows platform but if (and according to my reading, most likely) it's version dependent so be it. Maybe something like: C:\command /uninstall "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2705219)" Looks like using the KB would be great but wusa.exe works for the above example update but not for say "Security Update for Silverlight (KBXXXXXXXX)". Not much consistency. I'm really surprised there isn't much documentation on this. How does an app like WUInstall do it? Follow up question is how is that list of "View Installed Updates" populated? I've searched the registry like crazy hoping for an "UninstallString" or equivalent but only found references to the regular Add/Remove Programs list. Thought I would reference a StackOverflow question for another perspective.

• Snippets between desktop and laptop

  The Situation: At work, I have a nice beefy desktop running Windows Server 2008 R2 (SharePoint dev machine). My handy ThinkPad is right next to it. Every once in a while I'd like to cut and paste or share something (usually text) between the machines: for example, I might be headed out and I'd like to take send the URL I'm reading from the desktop to the laptop. Of course I can create a share or use the Admin shares and create files to get stuff back and forth, but that seems heavyweight for what I'm thinking of. I'm thinking more along the lines of sending myself an IM. How do you get little things from machine to machine? Keep a shared folder pinned to the taskbar? Send an email to yourself? Bookmark sync? While on it, I'm looking for a decent multiple clipboard handler: maybe these two functions are combined in some nice little utility? I suspect I'm missing something simple here... Thanks...   Hi! If I have one website and I want to rotate its logs, there's one instance of logrotate that is launched. There are as many logrotate instances launched as they are virtual websites. Here you can find mod_log_rotate, with a 1.3 version and (only) 2.0 version: http://www.hexten.net/wiki/index.php/Mod-log-rotate It's 6 years old. Is there something new, or maybe is there something like that in recent Apache versions? • "Manual threading" in Thunderbird?

  I use Thunderbird's threaded view of email messages to group emails together which are related. However, sometimes people will reply to messages using some mail program which does not properly set the headers to tell it's a reply, or will even write a new mail instead of replying. In these cases I would like to manually assign or "dock" a mail to an existing thread. Is there some way / addon to do this in Thunderbird? I'm thinking along the lines of a context menu "attach mail to thread XXX". The mail would then become part of that thread (maybe with a special marker explaining that it was manually grouped).

• The fastest way to encode image+audio for Youtube from command line?

  I have an mp3 and image and I want to make a simple clip to upload onto Youtube. Is there a fast solution? If video formats are so bad designed, then maybe it is possible to use a prerendered video-only clip? This works good except it takes as much time as the audio lasts: ffmpeg -loop_input -r ntsc -i "%IMAGE%" -i "%AUDIO%" -r 1 -acodec copy -shortest -re -force_fps "%VIDEO%" This takes a second but results in a black screen video that is successfully played by a desktop video player but not acceptable by Youtube: ffmpeg -i "%IMAGE%" -i "%AUDIO%" -acodec copy "%VIDEO%" Windows 7. Preserving audio quality is preferred over video quality.

• User cannot book a room resource in Exchange 2010

  Im having a problem with a specific user not being able to book a room resource. No error message is generated at all. The user attempts to add the room as a meeting resource and it simply doesnt register with the resources calendar. I have tested the resource with other accounts and other rooms for this user but it is only this room that is having issues for this user. This Exchange server was migrated from 2007 to 2010. All rooms except for the problem room were created back on Exchange 2007. This new room was created with Exchange 2010. Maybe this clue has something to do with the problem?   we are building a web front end for a internet access token management system that uses radius (freeradius) queried from a captive portal. Reason for building this part is the integration into the accounting and billing platform that operates behind the scenes (all other parts are currently available open source software) The structure is fairly standard, and setting up the basic bits were easy enough (authentication, traffic updates from the captive portal, account expiry date/times) - but I seem to have run out of ability when it comes to limiting an account by traffic consumed. So we can: set up usernames / passwords set expiry dates/times for a given user see the traffic for that user being accurately updated in RADACCT But we can't figure out the correct way/attribute to expire a user when they have consumed X octets of traffic. What attributes are used, or - maybe more accurately - what would be the correct way to use these attributes to limit an account to a certain volume of traffic? Any links to documentation appreciated - freeradius documentation doesn't seem to address the issue directly, or I'm looking in the wrong place... --mark

• Messages released from MailScanner quarantine are marked as DUPLICATEDELIVER in Exchange 2007

  I have installed Postfix with MailScanner on CentOS 5.4 as a smarthost for Exchange 2007. When a message gets quarantined and I later release it (http://wiki.mailscanner.info/doku.php?id=documentation%3Aconfiguration%3Amta%3Apostfix%3Ahow%5Fto%3Arelease%5Fquarantined%5Fmail), it gets delivered to the Exhcange box but does not appear in a user's mailbox. Exchange message tracking log shows the message is marked as DUPLICATEDELIVER and therefore dropped. How can I work around this situation? Maybe changing a message ID somehow while at the Postfix box or some other way? Thanks.

  Hello, Recently I'm trying the Window Live Mail client. Simple and beautiful. I have set up an IMAP account, and I'm used that a client only downloads headers. However Windows Live Mail automatically creates a list of tasks to download all messages from all directories when you are closing the client. Is it possible to avoid this? It's a good and a bad thing. You can work offline and you have a backup, but it takes extremely long to perform, in fact I have about hundred of thousand of emails. This task can take a whole day to perform. After looking in the settings I don't see anything special, maybe you have an idea? Thank you Mike

  Maybe a little more of the same questions that others have asked but wanted to clarify my doubt, for some years run my hosting company (reseller of esds) and I've done well so far, but I am determined to bring quality and server technology to offer another level. So far I have understood that there is a difference between cloud and cluster servers because the cluster function as load balancers that distribute in different servers roles and use the servers less overloaded in the cloud is the union of multiple servers and then the same is vitualized unlike the cluster that is allowed to use the resources of the CPU and RAM servers in the virtualized environment. My approach is to use 3 dedicated servers to create a cloud server, My doubts: Does this type of cloud servers are only reserved for big companies? (Either because the union of the servers is done by hardware or software with high price) What characteristics should these servers meet? Possibly through software which should be used? Available? • Adjusting the column height of a Word 2007 Mail Merge on every page?

  I've been doing mail merges lately and we use labels that aren't listed in the default MS Word settings: I tried measuring them out and here is what I got: Despite measuring them they don't seem to fit, and I always end up having to adjust the heights so that they print correctly. When I do this and I have 24 pages or so of labels I have to adjust each page individually and it all gets a bit annoying. So I was wondering if anyone had the proper measurements (since mine didn't work) or if maybe someone knew how to adjust the height of the columns of every page in exactly the same way to avoid using more labels.

  I'm setting up a public web server: Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS7.5. Does anyone have a tutorial / walkthrough / tips on properly securing a public web server? I've seen a few tutorials but mostly focused on Windows Server 2003. What I've done so far: Created a specific user account for the website / app pool, Renamed Admin account, Installed FTPS, Configured firewall to block any non-public service (web / https), Configured firewall to allow access to management interfaces only from specific IP addresses (rdp, IIS management, ftp) Maybe a few other things but can't remember at the moment... ICMP is allowed... Should I disable all except ping? Port scan reveals only web and https ports. Any other suggestions? Thanks

• How do you create large, growable, shared filesystems on Linux at AWS?

  What are acceptable/reasonable/best ways to provide large, growable, shared storage at AWS, exposed as a single filesystem? We're currently making 1TB EBS volumes ~biweekly and NFS exporting with no_subtree_check and nohide. In this setup, distinct exports appear under a single mount on the client. This arrangement does not scale well. The options we've considered: LVM2 with ext4. resize2fs is too slow. Btrfs on Linux. not obviously ready for prime time yet. ZFS on Linux. not obviously ready for prime time yet (although LLNL uses it) ZFS on Solaris. future of this combo is uncertain (to me), and new OS in the mix glusterfs. heard mostly good but two scary (and maybe old?) stories. The ideal solution would provide sharing, a single fs view, easy expandability, snapshots, and replication. Thanks for sharing ideas and experience.

• Local network cache of PHP and Apache2 on Win Server 2008 R2

  Software configuration : I have a new server with Windows Server 2008 R2 installed via VMWare. I have installed Apache2.2, PHP5.2 and MySQL5.5 as separate packages. Issue : On my first installation of my application, all works great. When I updated some JS and CSS files and accessed my application again from a PC on local network, I got the old JS and CSS versions. When I access the same application on local server I got the latest versions of those files. Link of my application on local server is : http://localhost/BADIL Link of my application from local network is : http://LOCAL_SERVER_IP/BADIL I think that must be some cache but I don't know where. Maybe on Win Server 2008 R2 or on VMWare? The question is: Why, when I access my application on the server, everything works fine, but when I access the same application from a local network, I do not see the updated versions of JS and CSS files?

  I made a backup of one of my external drives to another. They are both NTFS filesystems. I moved ALL disk contents into a folder called a and right clicked to get file/folder/size count. They are exactly the same. However windows reports J having 1.33gb (backup) and Q: as 521mb. Now I think maybe its because of hardlinks, I must have more on J then Q. How might I figure out how many hardlinks I have in a drive?

• Using Windows 7 drivers in Windows Server 2008 R2

  Maybe I should post this to http://www.serverfault.com. Windows 7 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 doesn't event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. But I know that this has a very good reason. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are normally desktop machines and would need Windows 7 driver spectrum... Question I know I've been reading about some trick on the internet that first installed Windows 7 on the machine, than do something to get either all Windows 7 driver collection or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 and use those drivers. The thing is: I can't seem to find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where these are please provide the link for the rest of us.

• Glitch with updated nvidia drivers for Dual Monitor

  Same problem already happened once so I rolled back to the latest non-problematic version, but it's been months now and I thought to try gain. Still the same problem, so now I thought to ask for help rather than rollback to this, now very old, version. Currently I use 266.58 version drivers for Windows 7 x64 and GeForce GTX 275. (Downloaded from the nvidia website) I have two monitors, Samsung SyncMaster 223BW (LCD) is primary and LG F900B (CRT, old but still works) is secondary. The problem: when I turn off the monitors (both or just secondary) all of the windows that were on the secondary monitor get moved to the primary. This also occurs when I use Sleep. Again, in the old drivers this didnt happen, but now it does and is very annoying, requiring me to manually move the windows back to the secondary monitor (which I use for most of the windows). I had no luck searching for this on google, but maybe somebody here will have a useful suggestion.

I am using SharpDevelop to write a Windows Mobile application, but I need to use an assembly in the Windows Mobile 6.0 SDK. When I try to install the SDK I get a message that says Visual Studio is a prerequisite, and I am un able to install it. Is there a way to trick it in to thinking Visual Studio is installed; maybe a registry entry that can be added or something, or am I just hosed? • Custom resolution - Windows 7 - no drivers

  I'm having some problems with my VGA card. When I enable my VGA drivers and boot windows up they crash and I get message that the problem occured with atimdag.sys drivers or smth like that. I'm gettin BSOD all the time, unless I go to control panel and I disable drivers manually. I can live with disabled drivers just fine(I'm already used to it in quite some time) but the annoying problem is my display resolution. I can not set my res to anything higher than 1024x768. I was wondering if it's possible to change resolution to my native displays resolution without drivers? I've been trying to find something that would work w/o drivers, but with no luck(I've found many of solutions how to do it with working drivers, but as you know I can not enable my drivers). So please, maybe someone could help me and tell me how to set custom resolution?
