• VMWare steals IP addresses [closed]

  I'm having a peculiar problem, that I think I have narrowed down to VMware. For the past one year, every once in a while we lose internet connection and not all users (about 10 users) go down at the same time, its usually one-by-one. First someone will call me and say "Internet is down" and then we would go reset the router and modem and switch and it would be working again for a while, then go down again without any pattern or replicatable sequence. We'd go repeat the steps again to get everyone in the office running again. We called our Internet Service Provider and they constantly say, We see your modem and we see your router and from thier end everything is OK. we replaced our router and switch and modem, twice! Last friday, it dawned upon me, that everytime we turn on a VMware machine, this sequence of taking everyone down starts, which also explains the message that my users get for "IP Conflict Found" So we do alot of VMware testing and lo and behold, it takes my Internet down. My Yahoo and Gtalk would continue working but www is down when the VMware machines are started. I do use bridged networking to all the VMware machines, but I dont know what else to set it at. now, sorry for this long rambling but anyone have any clue on how to stop this? thanks IA

• Which Database to choose?

  I have the following criteria Database should be protected with a username and password. It should not be possible to copy the database file and use it else were like MS Access. There will be no central database server. Each machine will run their own database server locally and user will initiate synchronization. Concept is inspired from distributed version control system like Git. So it should have good replication support. Strong consistency is not needed. Users will synchronize each other database when they need. In case of conflicts it should be possible to find the conflict and present it (from application) to the user for fixing it. Revisions of data if available it will be good. e.g. Entire history of change to a invoice. I explored document oriented database and inclined towards the same. But I dont know what to choose. Database is small it will not reach even 1GB in the next few years (say 3 years). Please feel free to suggest any database which you think might be suitable. Any pointers is highly appreciated. • Apply jump menu functionality on select box styled with jquery

  Hi all, I am using this script to apply style on a select box. It works fine as a standalone version. But I also need to apply a jump menu functionality on this select box. I tried adding a function but it seems that there is some conflict between the two scripts. The jquery styling and the jump menu function can't work together at the same time. Can you help me fix it? • Redirect C++ std::clog to syslog on Unix

  I work on Unix on a C++ program that send messages to syslog. The current code uses the syslog system call that works like printf. Now I would prefer to use a stream for that purpose instead, typically the built-in std::clog. But clog merely redirect output to stderr, not to syslog and that is useless for me as I also use stderr and stdout for other purposes. I've seen in another answer that it's quite easy to redirect it to a file using rdbuf() but I see no way to apply that method to call syslog as openlog does not return a file handler I could use to tie a stream on it. Is there another method to do that ? (looks pretty basic for unix programming) ? Edit: I'm looking for a solution that does not use external library. What @Chris is proposing could be a good start but is still a bit vague to become the accepted answer. Edit: using Boost.IOStreams is OK as my project already use Boost anyway. Linking with external library is possible but is also a concern as it's GPL code. Dependencies are also a burden as they may conflict with other components, not be available on my Linux distribution, introduce third-party bugs, etc. If this is the only solution I may consider completely avoiding streams... (a pity).

• AVAudioPlayer working in Simulator, but not on device

But not on the device. I've recently added some sound recording code (not mine) to the software. It uses AudioQueue stuff which is slightly beyond me. Does that conflict with AVAudioPlayer? Or what could be the problem? I've noticed that as soon as the audiorecording code starts working, I can't adjust the volume on the device anymore, so maybe it blocks the audio playback?. EDIT The solution seems to be to put this in my code. I put it in applicationDidFinishLaunching: [[AVAudioSession sharedInstance] setCategory: AVAudioSessionCategoryPlayAndRecord error: nil]; UInt32 audioRouteOverride = kAudioSessionOverrideAudioRoute_Speaker; AudioSessionSetProperty (kAudioSessionProperty_OverrideAudioRoute,sizeof (audioRouteOverride),&audioRouteOverride); The first line allows both play and record, whilst the other lines apparently reroute things to make the volume louder. All audio code is voodoo to me.

• Alternate cause of BadImageFormatException in .NET Assembly?

  I'm working on a .NET 3.5 console application in C# which uses a VC++ unmanaged DLL. It ran without a problem when I worked on it a few weeks ago, but I'm coming back to it today and am now getting a BadImageFormatException ("An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B)). My development workstation is running 64bit Windows 7, and I do a fair amount of work with unmanaged code, so I immediately checked that the .NET assembly and the VC++ library both had x86 targets. They did. Just to be sure, I cleaned and rebuilt the VC++ library and the .NET assembly, to no avail. Neither system is doing anything particularly unusual. The VC++ library loads a binary data file and does some mathematical processing on its contents. The .NET assembly has the DllImports for the library and some code to wire it up. This all worked a few weeks ago. So now I'm left wondering if there's some other cause of BadImageFormatException that's less common than an x86/x64 conflict that I might be running into. Thanks.

• Do servlet containers prevent web applications from causing each other interference and how do they do it?

  I know that a servlet container, such as Apache Tomcat, runs in a single instance of the JVM, which means all of its servlets will run in the same process. I also know that the architecture of the servlet container means each web application exists in its own context, which suggests it is isolated from other web applications. As depicted here: Accepting that each web application is isolated, I would expect that you could create 2 copies of an identical web application, change the names and context paths of each (as well as any other relevant configuration), and run them in parallel without one affecting the other. The answers to this question appear to support this view. However, a colleague disagrees based on their experience of attempting just that. They took a web application and tried to run 2 separate instances (with different names etc) in the same servlet container and experienced issues with the 2 instances conflicting (I'm unable to elaborate more as I wasn't involved in that work). Based on this, they argue that since the web applications run in the same process space, they can't be isolated and things such as class attributes would end up being inadvertently shared. This answer appears to suggest the same thing The two views don't seem to be compatible, so I ask you: Do servlet containers prevent web applications deployed to the same container from conflicting with each other? If yes, How do they do this? If no, Why does interference occur? and finally, Under what circumstances could separate web applications conflict and cause each other interference?, perhaps scenarios involving resources on the file system, native code, or database connections?

• ASP.NET MVC2 DataAnnotations not catching error

  Can somebody help me to figure out why DataAnnotations will not work with my MVC2 project in VS 2008 SP1? Here's the situation.. I uninstalled VS2008 and MVC1, then reinstalled VS2008 SP1 and .NET 3.5 SP1 and MVC2. Now when I create a clean project as soon as it has to hit the DataAnnotations Dll (e.g. say when I go to Register.aspx it fails at the first "LabelFor" that it encounters. I can overcome this by changing the "Copy Local" property of the dll to True but this then creates a conflict with the same dll in the Tests project. If then I delete the test project and try agan, it runs but does not catch any validation failures. I have gone right back to basics and followed the step by step ScottGu Datavalidation tutorial at : http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/01/15/asp-net-mvc-2-model-validation.aspx And at the "Et viola" bit where we usually go "Whoa! cool!" I say "It never caught!". Any Ideas?

• jQuery ui Accordion degrades in IE6 or IE7, but is working in IE8

  There are two accordions on my page, with custom accordion CSS in another file, differentiated by class and ID names so as not to conflict with each other. The accordions don't show up at all, they just degrade to showing all the content at once, as if all the accordion styling is gone. The accordions are both called around the middle of the page, and there's no difference if they are loaded with $(document).ready. What should I check for in the CSS files? There are no inline-block uses. I am using jQuery 1.3.2.min and jQuery ui 1.7.2, so I'm assuming the autoHeight set to false won't make a difference... This is being used inside a Symfony-based site. Works fine in FF, IE8, Chrome. • Version control - stubs and mocks

  For the sake of this question, I don't care about the difference between stubs, mocks, dummies, fakes, etc. Let's say I'm working on a project with one other person. I'm working on component A and he is working on component B. They work together, so I stub out B for testing, and he stubs out A. We're working in a DVCS, let's say Git, because that's actually the case here. When it comes time to merge our components together, we need to get the "real" files from my A and his B, but throw away all the fake stuff. During development, it's likely (unless I need to learn how to properly stub things) that the fakes have the same file names and class names as the real thing. So my question is: what is the proper procedure for doing version control on the fakes, and how are the components correctly merged, making sure to grab the real thing and not the fake? I would guess that one way is just do the merge, expect it to say CONFLICT, and then manually delete all the fake code out of the half-merged files. But this sounds tedious and inefficient. Should the fake things not go under VC at all? Should they be ripped out just before merging? Sorry if the answer to this should be obvious or trivial, I'm just looking for a "suggested practice" here.

• Flex: embedded fonts not being applied correctly in Label and DataGrid

  Folks, I am observing a problem with how an embedded font is applied to certain Flex components, namely mx:Label and mx:DataGrid. I have a CSS that declares three variations on an embedded font as follows: @font-face { src:url("buttons.swf"); font-family: "Arial"; } @font-face { src:url("buttons.swf"); font-family: "Arial"; font-weight: bold; } @font-face { src:url("buttons.swf"); font-family: "Arial"; font-style: italic; } And in the style declaration for Label and DataGrid, I have: Label { fontFamily: "Arial"; fontSize: 11; fontFamily: LucidaSans; } and DataGrid { fontFamily: "Arial"; height: 16; } (I've snipped some stuff from both style rules, so if you think there's something that may be causing a conflict I can certainly post the entire definition. It's mostly color, line and padding stuff for the DataGrid.) The problem that is for both Label and cells in the DataGrid the text is being rendered as sort of a times new roman font. The headers in the DataGrid are fine, just the text in the cells is wonky. All other components use the correct font as defined in the CSS/SWF. Any ideas why this is happening?

• MVVM Light - master / child views and dependency properties

  I'm getting an odd problem when implementing a master / child view and custom dependency properties. Within my master view I'm binding the view model declaratively in the XAML as follows: DataContext="{Binding MainViewModelProperty, Source={StaticResource Locator}}" and my MainViewModel is exposing an observable collection which I'm binding to an ItemsControl as follows: <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Lists}" Height="490" Canvas.Top="10" Width="70"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Canvas> <local:TaskListControl Canvas.Left="{Binding ListLeft}" Canvas.Top="{Binding ListTop}" Width="{Binding ListWidth}" Height="{Binding ListHeight}" ListDetails="{Binding}"/> </Canvas> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> TaskListControl in turn declares and bind to it's ViewModel and I've also defined a dependency property for the ListDetails property. The ListDetails property is not being set and if I remove the declarative reference to it's viewmodel the dependency property's callback does get fired. Is there a conflict with declaratively binding to viewmodels and definig dependency properties? • python __import__() imports from 2 different directories when same module exists in 2 locations

  Hi, I have a python application , which has directory structure like this. -pythonapp -mainpython.py -module1 -submodule1 -file1.py -file2.py -submodule2 -file3.py -file3.py -submodule3 -file1.py -file2.py -file5.py -file6.py -file7.py when I try to import the python utilities(from mainpython.py) under submodule3 , I get the initial 2 files from submodule1.(please note that submodule1 and 3 have 2 different files with the same name). However the same import works fine when there is no conflict i.e it correctly imports file 5,6,7 from submodule3. Here is the code : name=os.path.splitext(os.path.split("module1\submodule3\file1.py")[1])[0] -- file1.py name here is passed dynamically. module = import(name) //Here is name is like "file1" it works(but with the above said issue, though, when passes the name of the file dynamically), but if I pass complete package as "module1.submodule1.file1" it fails with an ImportError saying that "no module with name file1" Now the question is how do we tell the interpreter to use only the ones under "module1.submodule3.file2"? I am using python This is really urgent one and I have run out of all the tries. Hope some experienced python developers can solve this for me?

• Set up Gitosis, but can't clone

  I've set up Gitosis on a remote Ubuntu box which I will refer to as linuxserver as my host in the following commands. I'm also connecting from a Windows box using Cygwin. I followed the instructions according to: http://scie.nti.st/2007/11/14/hosting-git-repositories-the-easy-and-secure-way I had no problems up until I needed to clone the gitosis-admin repository to my local machine git clone git@linuxserver:gitosis-admin.git When I do this, the command executes, but hangs there displaying nothing until I ctrl-c to get back to a command prompt. No messages are displayed at all. I'm pretty sure I have my ssh keys set up properly, because logging in using "ssh linuxserver" into my regular account works perfectly without asking for a password. Edit: Over the weekend I set up a near identical Ubuntu box at home, and had no problem setting up Gitosis. The only difference was that I was connecting from OSX instead of Cygwin. Edit: I've also discovered that when using the Bash Shell provided with "Git Extensions", I have no problems, so the issue definitely seems to be some kind of Cygwin conflict. Edit: Just an update, but about a month after posting this question, I switched to Mercurial, and found that I prefer it much more than git. Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't plan on going back to git to try any of them out.

• SQL Server Compact timed out waiting for a lock

  Hi all, I'm having an application in that i use Sql Compact 3.5 with VS2008. I'm running multiple threads in my application which contacts the compact database and accesses the row. It selects and deletes those rows in a fashion i.e selecting and giving to the application 5 rows and deleting those rows from the table. It works great with a single thread but if i use multiple threads i.e if 3 or more threads are running I get very often the TimeOut Error!!! I have increased the Time out property in the connection string but it didn't give me expected result. The error log is as follow: SQL Server Compact timed out waiting for a lock. The default lock time is 2000ms for devices and 5000ms for desktops. The default lock timeout can be increased in the connection string using the ssce: default lock timeout property. [ Session id = 5,Thread id = 4204,Process id = 4808,Table name = XXX,Conflict type = x lock (s blocks),Resource = TAB ] The Query that I use to retrieve is as follows: " select Top(5) * from TableName order by id; delete from TableName where id in(select top(5) id from TableName order by id); " Is there any way by which we can avoid this Time Out exception??????? The above query I un as a transaction in VS2008 one using SQLCECommand and the other using SqlCEDataAdapter. Any Idea!!!!!! Reply

• C# naming convention for enum and matching property

  Hi All, I often find myself implementing a class maintaining some kind of own status property as an enum: I have a Status enum and ONE Status property of Status type. How should I solve this name conflict? public class Car { public enum Status { Off, Starting, Moving }; Status status = Status.Off; public Status Status // <===== Won't compile ===== { get { return status; } set { status = value; DoSomething(); } } } If the Status enum were common to different types, I'd put it outside the class and the problem would be solved. But Status applies to Car only hence it doesn't make sense to declare the enum outside the class. What naming convention do you use in this case? NB: This question was partially debated in comments of an answer of this question. Since it wasn't the main question, it didn't get much visibility. EDIT: Filip Ekberg suggests an IMO excellent workaround for the specific case of 'Status'. Yet I'd be interesting to read about solutions where the name of the enum/property is different, as in Michael Prewecki's answer. EDIT2 (May 2010): My favorite solution is to pluralize the enum type name, as suggested by Chris S. According to MS guidelines, this should be used for flag enums only. But I've come to like it more and more. I now use it for regular enums as well.

• MonoRail ActiveRecord - The UPDATE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY SAME TABLE

  Hey all, I'm new to MonoRail and ActiveRecord and have inherited an application that I need to modify. I have a Category table (Id, Name) and I'm adding a ParentId FK which references the Id in the same table so that you can have parent/child category relationships. I tried adding this to my Category model class: [Property] public int ParentId { get; set; } I also tried doing it this way: [BelongsTo("ParentId")] public Category Parent { get; set; } When I call a method to get all parent categories (they have a null ParentId), it works fine: public static Category[] GetParentCategories() { var criteria = DetachedCriteria.For<Core.Models.Category>(); return (FindAllByProperty("ParentId", null)); } However, when I call a method to get all child categories within a specific category, it errors out: public static Category[] GetChildCategories(int parentId) { var criteria = DetachedCriteria.For<Core.Models.Category>(); return (FindAllByProperty("ParentId", parentId)); } The error is: "The UPDATE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY SAME TABLE constraint \"FK_Category_ParentId\". The conflict occurred in database \"UCampus\", table \"dbo.Category\", column 'Id'.\r\nThe statement has been terminated." I'm hard-coding in the parentId parameter as 1 and I'm 100% sure it exists as an id in the Category table so I don't know why it'd give this error. • text not wrapping around some floated images, wraps in IE & FF but not chrome, safari

  This is unlike anything I've read about and I've been totally scratching my head for the last few hours trying to figure out what's going on. I have a hand-coded site @ hartbro.com Part of the site is a blog, in which I include pictures. Here's the HTML code around one of the images that's causing trouble. <a href="blogcontent/090811.jpg" class="img"> <img src="blogcontent/090811.jpg" alt="Downed trees" width="25%" class="floatright" /></a> The storm left as quickly as it came. The sky cleared up and we were glad that the oppressive heat had let up. What I've noticed is that, on some of the blog entries that include more than one image, the 2nd image isn't really floating like its supposed to be, with the text wrapping around it. I figure its got to be some sort of conflict with some CSS that I have that's causing the problem but I just can't figure out what it is. I don't understand how it works in FF & IE but not Chrome or Safari?? Here's all of the relevant CSS, let me know if you need anything else.   I've been pulling my hair out (and going way over allotted hours) to try and figure out why Colorbox isn't working properly on the following page: http://www.fiberforge.com I've set up a Colorbox test link on the very bottom right that says "Web Design By All Web Cafe", which should open up a small logo image. In Firefox, Safari, etc the modal behaves as it should, opening center center above all of the existing on-page content. In IE, not only is the modal not centered, but it appears as though it's not obeying absolute positioning and pushing all of the existing on-page content down below. Add to that the fact that it's not opening to the correct size and creating scrollbars next to the modal image, and we have ourselves one ugly modal. The scrollbars I can live with (by just resizing the min-height of the modal), but I can't figure out why it won't center. Let me say that I did not code this site initially and it was completed quite a few years ago, so there are quite probably numerous CSS hacks to get things to display properly, any number of which may be causing this problem. By contrast, Thickbox is also set up on this site (if you click on the "Play Video" callout in the dark blue area) and behaves correctly, though suffers from some weird sizing/padding issues, hence the desire to replace it with something a bit more modern and extensible. I can verify that there is no conflict having both of these modal scripts/CSS files concurrently as the problem still occurs with Colorbox even when Thickbox is removed entirely. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  This is a less a question with a simple, practical answer and more a question to foster discussion on the real-time data exchange topic. I'll begin with an example: Google Wave is, at its core, a real-time asynchronous data synchronization engine. Wave supports (or plans to support) concurrent (real-time) document collaboration, disconnected (offline) document editing, conflict resolution, document history and playback with attribution, and server federation. A core part of Wave is the Operational Transformation engine: http://www.waveprotocol.org/whitepapers/operational-transform The OT engine manages document state. Changes between clients are merged and each client has a sane and consistent view of the document at all times; the final document is eventually consistent between all connected clients. My question is: is this system abstract or general enough to be used as a library or generic framework upon which to build web apps that synchronize real-time, asynchronous state in each client? Is the Wave protocol directly used by any current web applications (besides Google's client)? Would it make sense to directly use it for generic state synchronization in a web app? What other existing libraries or frameworks would you consider using when building such a web app? How much code in such an app might be domain-specific logic vs generic state synchronization logic? Or, put another way, how leaky might the state synchronization abstractions be? Comments and discussion welcomed!

• git merge with renamed files

  I have a large website that I am moving into a new framework and in the process adding git. The current site doesn't have any version control on it. I started by copying the site into a new git repository. I made a new branch and made all of the changes that were needed to make it work with the new framework. One of those steps was changing the file extension of all of the pages. Now in the time that I have been working on the new site changes have been made to files on the old site. So I switched to master and copied all of those changes in. The problem is when I merge the branch with the new framework back onto master there is a conflict on every file that was changed on the master branch. I wouldn't be to worried about it but there are a couple of hundred files with changes. I have tried git rebase and git rebase --merge with no luck. How can I merge these 2 branches without dealing with every file?

• How to manage multiple python versions ?

  short version: how can I get rid of the multiple-versions-of-python nightmare ? long version: over the years, I've used several versions of python, and what is worse, several extensions to python (e.g. pygame, pylab, wxPython...). Each time it was on a different setup, with different OSes, sometimes different architectures (like my old PowerPC mac). Nowadays I'm using a mac (OSX 10.6 on x86-64) and it's a dependency nightmare each time I want to revive script older than a few months. Python itself already comes in three different flavours in /usr/bin (2.5, 2.6, 3.1), but I had to install 2.4 from macports for pygame, something else (cannot remember what) forced me to install all three others from macports as well, so at the end of the day I'm the happy owner of seven (!) instances of python on my system. But that's not the problem, the problem is, none of them has the right (i.e. same set of) libraries installed, some of them are 32bits, some 64bits, and now I'm pretty much lost. For example right now I'm trying to run a three-year-old script (not written by me) which used to use matplotlib/numpy to draw a real-time plot within a rectangle of a wxwidgets window. But I'm failing miserably: py26-wxpython from macports won't install, stock python has wxwidgets included but also has some conflict between 32 bits and 64 bits, and it doesn't have numpy... what a mess ! Obviously, I'm doing things the wrong way. How do you usally cope with all that chaos ?e

• Is it possible to use 2 versions of jQuery on the same page?

  NOTE: I know similar questions have already been asked here and here, but I'm looking for additional clarification as to how to make this work. I'm adding functionality to an existing web site that is already using an older version of the jQuery library (1.1.3.1). I've been writing my added functionality against the newest version of the jQuery library (1.4.2). I've tested the website using only the newer version of jQuery and it breaks functionality, so now I'm looking at using both versions on the same page. How is this possible? What do I need to do in my code to specify that I'm using one version of jQuery instead of another? For example, I'll put <script> tags for both versions of jQuery in the header of my page, but what do I need to do so that I know for sure in my calling code that I'm calling one version of the library or another? Maybe something like this: //Put some code here to specify a variable that will be using the newer //version of jquery: var $NEW = jQuery.theNewestVersion(); //Now when I use $NEW, I'll know it's the newest version and won't //conflict with the older version. $NEW('#personName').text('Ben'); //And when I use the original $ in code, or simply 'jquery', I'll know //it's the older version. $('#personName').doSomethingWithTheOlderVersion();
