  • Bridge and OpenVPN with shorewall

    - by Javier Martinez
I have this scenario and everything it's working OK, but I want to configure my Shorewall and I can't do it. My interfaces are: br0 (bridge of eth0) tun0 (OpenVPN) vnet* (each one of bridged interfaces with public IP's) Public Main IP: 188.165.X.Y OpenVPN IP's: 172.28.0.x Bridge: public ip's So, I have the next configuration for shorewall: /etc/shorewall/zones #ZONE TYPE OPTIONS IN OUT # OPTIONS OPTIONS fw firewall inet ipv4 road ipv4 /etc/shorewall/interfaces #ZONE INTERFACE BROADCAST OPTIONS inet br0 detect routeback road tun+ detect routeback /etc/shorewall/policy #SOURCE DEST POLICY LOG LIMIT: CONNLIMIT: # LEVEL BURST MASK $FW all ACCEPT inet $FW DROP info road all DROP inet road DROP /etc/shorewall/tunnels #TYPE ZONE GATEWAY GATEWAY # ZONE openvpnserver:1194 inet 0.0.0.0/0 The problem is that even with shorewall running I am able to ping or connect to the virtual machines behind the bridge

  • CentOS vps is randomly rebooting

    - by develroot
I have a centos vps (Parallels Virtuozzo container) which has been running for months. However, a few days ago it started to randomly reboot itself, and i can't find out why. And the biggest problem that i don't understand is that it takes 40 minutes to reboot (as far as i can see in the logs) root ~ # cat /var/log/messages | grep shutdown Oct 11 13:52:11 vps27 shutdown[23968]: shutting down for system halt Oct 14 14:55:17 vps27 shutdown[30662]: shutting down for system halt Oct 15 06:21:23 vps27 shutdown[20157]: shutting down for system halt And notice the time difference between shutdown and xinetd's start: Oct 15 06:21:23 vps27 shutdown[20157]: shutting down for system halt Oct 15 06:21:24 vps27 init: Switching to runlevel: 0 Oct 15 06:21:27 vps27 saslauthd[30614]: server_exit : master exited: 30614 Oct 15 06:21:38 vps27 named[30661]: shutting down Oct 15 06:21:47 vps27 exiting on signal 15 Oct 15 07:04:34 vps27 syslogd 1.4.1: restart. • How to make IE 9 stop reading all the fonts every time?

    - by Mehrdad
Process Monitor showed me that IE 9 accesses every time it loads on my system, which makes it have a 1- to 2-second delay every time it loads. (I tested this by removing my fonts -- it loaded much more quickly.) It gets a little annoying, because it's the best handler I have for MHT files, so I don't want to switch to something else. Is there any way to make it avoid doing that? (The "Hide Fonts" feature in Windows 7 doesn't work.)

  • Is it possible to temporarily disable non-global zones?

    - by Gary
I frequently need to install a package on the global zone for a quick test on a development box. When there are multiple prompts for one package I have to answer them for each zone. If the zone is not running then I need to wait for the zone to start up, answer the prompts, etc. This is particularly annoying when if I'm getting packages from http://www.sunfreeware.com and using the pkg-get utility which nicely pulls in dependencies for you. Can I disable the zones temporarily? I haven't found a way to do this. Thanks.

  • Shorewall SHOW DYNAMIC command doesn't work

    - by Andrew Burns
Setting up shorewall dynamic zones, http://shorewall.net/Dynamic.html shows the command shorewall show dynamic zone where zone is one of your zones. I can get the add and delete commands to work, but not the show dynamic command. Here is a shell session, with output from ipset list that proves that the items are indeed there. $ ipset list CPREM_br0 Name: CPREM_br0 Type: hash:ip Header: family inet hashsize 1024 maxelem 65536 Size in memory: 16520 References: 66 Members: 192.168.85.153 $ shorewall add br0:192.168.85.200 CPREM Host br0:192.168.85.200 added to zone CPREM $ shorewall show dynamic CPREM $ ipset list CPREM_br0 Name: CPREM_br0 Type: hash:ip Header: family inet hashsize 1024 maxelem 65536 Size in memory: 16536 References: 66 Members: 192.168.85.153 192.168.85.200 $ shorewall delete br0:192.168.85.200 CPREM Host br0:192.168.85.200 deleted from zone CPREM $ ipset list CPREM_br0 Name: CPREM_br0 Type: hash:ip Header: family inet hashsize 1024 maxelem 65536 Size in memory: 16536 References: 66 Members: 192.168.85.153 I am using the packaged version from Ubuntu 12.04 (4.4.26.1-1)

  • Is there a unix command to output time elapsed during a command?

    - by Olivier Lacan
I love using time to find out how long a command took to execute but when dealing with commands that execute sub-commands internally (and provide output that allows you to tell when each of those sub-commands start running) it would be really great to be able to tell after what number of seconds (or milliseconds) a specific sub-command started running. When I say sub-command, really the only way to distinguish these from the outside is anything printed to standard out. Really this seems like it should be an option to time.

  • DNS caching server config problem

    - by Alex
    I have a Bind DNS caching-only server setup that is working. I am bringing up a new AD domain controller that will also be a DNS server for that AD but I don't want it responding to any DNS queries except those that are AD related. So, my goal is to leave this caching server as the primary DNS server for stations on the network and have it forward requests for the AD domain to the domain controller. My understanding is that I just need a forward zone for that domain pointing to the domain controller. However it does not seem to be working. So that leaves me to think that my caching server is not forwarding properly. For example, this AD is going to have a naming convention of hostname.mydomain.local. If I do an nslookup and specify the domain controller's IP address as the server, I can query addresses that exist in DNS on that server, such as dc1.mydomain.local. However, queries to my caching server times out (I get a response from the caching server if I query mydomain.local but none of the objects in that domain). Any suggestions? Here is my named.conf file: options { directory "/var/named"; listen-on { 192.168.0.14; 127.0.0.1; }; forwarders { ; ; }; forward first; }; zone "." in { type hint; file "db.cache"; }; zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" in { type master; file "db.127.0.0"; }; //forward zone for mydomain.local zone "mydomain.local" { type forward; forwarders { 192.168.1.21; }; };

  • Cannot make bind9 forward DNS query to subdomain unless recursive enabled

    - by PP.
I am trying to develop my own dynamic DNS. I'm running my own custom DNS for the subdomain on port 5353. ASCII diagram: INET --->:53 Bind 9 --->:5353 node.js | V zone_files I have example.com. The node.js DNS is for dyn.example.com. In my /etc/bind/named.conf.local I have: zone "example.com" { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.com.example"; allow-transfer { zonetxfrsafe; }; }; zone "dyn.example.com" IN { # DYNAMIC type forward; forwarders { 127.0.0.1 port 5353; }; forward only; }; I've even gone so far as to add a NS in my example.com zone file: $TTL 86400 @ IN SOA ns.example.com. hostmaster.example.com. ( 2013070104 ; Serial 7200 ; Refresh 1200 ; Retry 2419200 ; Expire 86400 ) ; Negative Cache TTL ; NS ns ; inet of our nameserver ns A 1.2.3.4 ; NS record for subdomain dyn NS ns When I attempt to get a record from the subdomain server it doesn't get forwarded: dig @127.0.0.1 test.dyn.example.com However if I turn recursive on in /etc/bind/named.conf.options: options { recursion yes; } .. then I CAN see the request going to the subdomain server. But I don't want recursion yes; in my Bind configuration as it is poor security practice (and allows all-and-sundry requests that are not related to my managed zones). How does one forward (proxy) zone queries for just one zone? Or do I give up on Bind altogether and find a DNS server that can actually forward specific queries?

  • Store product data in session variable or access db every time?

    - by JakeTheSnake
I have my database storing lots of information about products (year, name, release_date, volume, etc. etc.). I currently load all of the products once and store them in a session variable - right now there's only 8 products but the list will grow as time progresses. The reason why I did this was to (perhaps foolishly) save HDD reads every time the products page was accessed. Am I shooting myself in the foot by storing this information in the session?

  • How can a Perfmon "% Processor Time" counter be over 100%?

    - by Bill Paetzke
The counter, Process: % Processor Time (sqlservr), is hovering around 300% on one of my database servers. This counter reflects the percent of total time SQL Server spent running on CPU (user mode + privilege mode). The book, Sql Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting, says that anything greater than 80% is a problem. How is it possible for that counter to be over 100%?

  • Similar But Not The Same

    - by rickramsey
A few weeks ago we published an article that explained how to use Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 5/11 to provide a virtual, multitiered architecture for Oracle Real Application Cluster (Oracle RAC) 11.2.0.2. We called it ... How to Deploy Oracle RAC on Zone Clusters Welllllll ... we just published another article just like it. Except that it's different. The earlier article was for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.2. This one is for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3. This one describes how to do the same thing as the earlier one --create an Oracle Solaris Zone cluster, install and configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Oracle RAC in the zone cluster, and create an Oracle Solaris Cluster resource for Oracle RAC-- but for version 11.2.0.3 of Oracle RAC. Even though the objective is the same, and the version is only a dot-dot-dot release away, the process is quite different. So we decided to call it: How to Deploy Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 on Zone Clusters Hope you can keep the different versions clear in your head. If not, let me know, and I'll try to make them easier to distinguish. - Rick Website Newsletter Facebook Twitter

  • SQLAuthority News – SQLPASS Nov 8-11, 2010-Seattle – An Alternative Look at Experience

    - by pinaldave
I recently attended most prestigious SQL Server event SQLPASS between Nov 8-11, 2010 at Seattle. I have only one expression for the event - Best Summit Ever This year the summit was at its best. Instead of writing about my usual routine or the event, I am going to write about the interesting things I did and how I felt about it! Best Summit Ever Trip to Seattle! This was my second trip to Seattle this year and the journey is always long. Here is the travel stats on how long it takes to get to Seattle: 24 hours official air time 36 hours total travel time (connection waits and airport commute) Every time I travel to USA I gain a day and when I travel back to home, I lose a day. However, the total traveling time is around 3 days. The journey is long and very exhausting. However, it is all worth it when you’re attending an event like SQLPASS. Here are few things I carry when I travel for a long journey: Dry Snack packs – I like to have some good Indian Dry Snacks along with me in my backpack so I can have my own snack when I want Amazon Kindle – Loaded with 80+ books A physical book – This is usually a very easy to read book I do not watch movies on the plane and usually spend my time reading something quick and easy. If I can go to sleep, I go for it. I prefer to not to spend time in conversation with the guy sitting next to me because usually I end up listening to their biography, which I cannot blog about. Sheraton Seattle SQLPASS In any case, I love to go to Seattle as the city is great and has everything a brilliant metropolis has to offer. The new Light Train is extremely convenient, and I can take it directly from the airport to the city center. My hotel, the Sheraton, was only few meters (in the USA people count in blocks – 3 blocks) away from the train station. This time I saved USD 40 each round trip due to the Light Train. Sessions I attended! Well, I really wanted to attend most of the sessions but there was great dilemma of which ones to choose. There were many, many sessions to be attended and at any given time there was more than one good session being presented. I had decided to attend sessions in area performance tuning and I attended quite a few sessions this year, compared to what I was able to do last year. Here are few names of the speakers whose sessions I attended (please note, following great speakers are not listed in any order. I loved them and I enjoyed their sessions): Conor Cunningham Rushabh Mehta Buck Woody Brent Ozar Jonathan Kehayias Chris Leonard Bob Ward Grant Fritchey I had great fun attending their sessions. The sessions were meaningful and enlightening. It is hard to rate any session but I have found that the insights learned in Conor Cunningham’s sessions are the highlight of the PASS Summit. Rushabh Mehta at Keynote SQLPASS   Bucky Woody and Brent Ozar I always like the sessions where the speaker is much closer to the audience and has real world experience. I think speakers who have worked in the real world deliver the best content and most useful information. Sessions I did not like! Indeed there were few sessions I did not like it and I am not going to name them here. However, there were strong reasons I did not like their sessions, and here is why: Sessions were all theory and had no real world connections. All technical questions ended with confusing answers (lots of “I will get back to you on it,” “it depends,” “let us take this offline” and many more…) “I am God” kind of attitude in the speakers For example, I attended a session of one very well known speaker who is a specialist for one particular area. I was bit late for the session and was surprised to see that in a room that could hold 350 people there were only 30 attendees. After sitting there for 15 minutes, I realized why lots of people left. Very soon I found I preferred to stare out the window instead of listening to that particular speaker. One on One Talk! Many times people ask me what I really like about PASS. I always say the experience of meeting SQL legends and spending time with them one on one and LEARNING! Here is the quick list of the people I met during this event and spent more than 30 minutes with each of them talking about various subjects: Pinal Dave and Brad Shulz Pinal Dave and Rushabh Mehta Michael Coles and Pinal Dave Rushabh Mehta – It is always pleasure to meet with him. He is a man with lots of energy and a passion for community. He recently told me that he really wanted to turn PASS into resource for learning for every SQL Server Developer and Administrator in the world. I had great in-depth discussion regarding how a single person can contribute to a community. Michael Coles – I consider him my best friend. It is always fun to meet him. He is funny and very knowledgeable. I think there are very few people who are as expert as he is in encryption and spatial databases. Worth meeting him every single time. Glenn Berry – A real friend of everybody. He is very a simple person and very true to his heart. I think there is not a single person in whole community who does not like him. He is a friends of all and everybody likes him very much. I once again had time to sit with him and learn so much from him. As he is known as Dr. DMV, I can be his nurse in the area of DMV. Brad Schulz – I always wanted to meet him but never got chance until today. I had great time meeting him in person and we have spent considerable amount of time together discussing various T-SQL tricks and tips. I do not know where he comes up with all the different ideas but I enjoy reading his blog and sharing his wisdom with me. Jonathan Kehayias – He is drill sergeant in US army. If you get the impression that he is a giant with very strong personality – you are wrong. He is very kind and soft spoken DBA with strong performance tuning skills. I asked him how he has kept his two jobs separate and I got very good answer – just work hard and have passion for what you do. I attended his sessions and his presentation style is very unique.  I feel like he is speaking in a language I understand. Louis Davidson – I had never had a chance to sit with him and talk about technology before. He has so much wisdom and he is very kind. During the dinner, I had talked with him for long time and without hesitation he started to draw a schema for me on the menu. It was a wonderful experience to learn from a master at the dinner table. He explained to me the real and practical differences between third normal form and forth normal form. Honestly I did not know earlier, but now I do. Erland Sommarskog – This man needs no introduction, he is very well known and very clear in conveying his ideas. I learned a lot from him during the course of year. Every time I meet him, I learn something new and this time was no exception. Joe Webb – Joey is all about community and people, we had interesting conversation about community, MVP and how one can be helpful to community without losing passion for long time. It is always pleasant to talk to him and of course, I had fun time. Ross Mistry – I call him my brother many times because he indeed looks like my cousin. He provided me lots of insight of how one can write book and how he keeps his books simple to appeal to all the readers. A wonderful person and great friend. Ola Hallgren - I did not know he was coming to the summit. I had great time meeting him and had a wonderful conversation with him regarding his scripts and future community activities. Blythe Morrow – She used to be integrated part of SQL Server Community and PASS HQ. It was wonderful to meet her again and re-connect. She is wonderful person and I had a great time talking to her. Solid Quality Mentors – It is difficult to decide who to mention here. Instead of writing all the names, I am going to include a photo of our meeting. I had great fun meeting various members of our global branches. This year I was sitting with my Spanish speaking friends and had great fun as Javier Loria from Solid Quality translated lots of things for me. Party, Party and Parties Every evening there were various parties. I did attend almost all of them. Every party had different theme but the goal of all the parties the same – networking. Here are the few parties where I had lots of fun: Dell Reception Party Exhibitor Party Solid Quality Fun Party Red Gate Friends Party MVP Dinner Microsoft Party MVP Dinner Quest Party Gameworks PASS Party Volunteer Party at Garage Solid Quality Mentors (10 Members out of 120) They were all great networking opportunities and lots of fun. I really had great time meeting people at the various parties. There were few people everywhere – well, I will say I am among them – who hopped parties. NDA – Not Decided Agenda During the event there were few meetings marked “NDA.” Someone asked me “why are these things NDA?”  My response was simple: because they are not sure themselves. NDA stands for Not Decided Agenda. Toys, Giveaways and Luggage I admit, I was like child in Gameworks and was playing to win soft toys. I was doing it for my daughter. I must thank all of the people who gave me their cards to try my luck. I won 4 soft-toys for my daughter and it was fun. Also, thanks to Angel who did a final toy swap with me to get the desired toy for my daughter. I also collected ducks from Idera, as my daughter really loves them. Solid Quality Booth Each of the exhibitors was giving away something and I got so much stuff that my luggage got quite a bit bigger when I returned. Best Exhibitor Idera had SQLDoctor (a real magician and fun guy) to promote their new tool SQLDoctor. I really had a great time participating in the magic myself. At one point, the magician made my watch disappear.  I have seen better magic before, but this time it caught me unexpectedly and I was taken by surprise. I won many ducks again. The Common Question I heard the following common questions: I have seen you somewhere – who are you? – I am Pinal Dave. I did not know that Pinal is your first name and Dave is your last name, how do you pronounce your last name again? – Da-way How old are you? – I am as old as I can be. Are you an Indian because you look like one? – I did not answer this one. Where are you from? This question was usually asked after looking at my badge which says India. So did you really fly from India? – Yes, because I have seasickness so I do not prefer the sea journey. How long was the journey? – 24/36/12 (air travel time/total travel time/time zone difference) Why do you write on SQLAuthority.com? – Because I want to. I remember your daughter looks like you. – Is this even a question? Of course, she is daddy’s little girl. There were so many other questions, I will have to write another blog post about it. • Webbrowser control: auto fill, only works one time, why?

    - by Khou
The following code loads a page and auto fills in the values. private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { //Load page and autofill webBrowser1.Navigate("http://exampledomain.com"); webBrowser1.DocumentCompleted += new WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventHandler(autoFillDetails); // etc...etc.. } private void autoFillDetails(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e) { // do auto fill values ((WebBrowser)sender).Document.GetElementById("MY_NAME").SetAttribute("value", "theMynamevalue"); // etc...etc... } Autofill only work one time! After the form has been submitted, and you navigate back to the page previous form page (even when you click the button again), it will no longer auto fill the form values! Note: The the "autoFillDetails" code is executed a second time, 3rd time etc, it still would not auto fill the values. why does it only work one time? what am i doing wrong?

  • What to send to server in real time FPS game?

    - by syloc
What is the right way to tell the position of our local player to the server? Some documents say that it is better to send the inputs whenever they are produced. And some documents say the client sends its position in a fixed interval. With the sending the inputs approach: What should I do if the player is holding down the direction keys? It means I need to send a package to the server in every frame. Isn't it too much? And there is also the rotation of the player from the mouse input. Here is an example: http://www.gabrielgambetta.com/fpm_live.html What about sending the position in fixed interval approach. It sends too few messages to the server. But it also reduces responsiveness. So which way is better?

  • Design patter to keep track UITableView rows correspondance to underlying data in constant time.

    - by DenNukem
When my model changes I want to animate changes in UITableView by inserting/deleting rows. For that I need to know the ordinal of the given row (so I can construct NSIndexPath), which I find hard to do in better-than-linear time. For example, consider that I have a list of addressbook entries which are manualy sorted by the user, i.e. there is no ordering "key" that represents the sort order. There is also a corresponding UITableView that shows one row per addressbook entry. When UITableView queries the datasource I query the NSMUtableArray populated with my entries and return required data in constant time for each row. However, if there is a change in underlying model I am getting a notification "Joe Smith, id#123 has been removed". Now I have a dilemma. A naive approach would be to scan the array, determine the index at which Joe Smith is and then ask UITableView to remove that precise row from the view, also removing it form the array. However, the scan will take linear time to finish. Now I could have an NSDictionary which allows me to find Joe Smith in constant time, but that doesn't do me a lot of good because I still need to find his ordinal index within the array in order to instruct UITableView to remove that row, which is again a linear search. I could further decide to store each object's ordinal inside the object itself to make it constant, but it will become outdated after first such update as all subsequent index values will have changed due to removal of an object. So what is the correct design pattern to accurately reflect model changes in the UITableView in costant (or at least logarithmic) time?

  • How can I create a fast, real-time, fixed length glowing ray?

    - by igf
Similar to the disintegrate skill in Diablo 3. It should not light other objects in scene. Just glowing and animated. Like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_c4x6aQAG8. Should I use pack of pre-computed glow sources textures for each frame of ray animation like in this article http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems/gpugems_ch21.html and put it in bloom shader? Is there any other efficient ways to achive this effect? I'm using OpenGL ES 2.0.

  • Will I have an easier time learning OpenGL in Pygame or Pyglet? (NeHe tutorials downloaded)

    - by shadowprotocol
I'm looking between PyGame and Pyglet, Pyglet seems to be somewhat newer and more Pythony, but it's last release according to Wikipedia is January '10. PyGame seems to have more documentation, more recent updates, and more published books/tutorials on the web for learning. I downloaded both the Pyglet and PyGame versions of the NeHe OpenGL tutorials (Lessons 1-10) which cover this material: lesson01 - Setting up the window lesson02 - Polygons lesson03 - Adding color lesson04 - Rotation lesson05 - 3D lesson06 - Textures lesson07 - Filters, Lighting, input lesson08 - Blending (transparency) lesson09 - 2D Sprites in 3D lesson10 - Moving in a 3D world What do you guys think? Is my hunch that I'll be better off working with PyGame somewhat warranted?

  • A good way in .NET Winforms to have user entered time frame?

    - by Ben
Hi, Does anyone know of a good way to have a user enter an amount of time (hours and minutes) using winforms controls? At the moment I have two numeric up downs, one for time and one for minutes that I then parse to create a timespan. The only other idea I have is a text box that a user can enter a "00:00" time in, and validate the input. Both of these ways seem a bit bad (in UI terms) though. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Architecture for Social Graph data that has a Time Frame Associated?

    - by Jay Stevens
I am adding some "social" type features to an existing application. There are a limited # of node & edge types. Overall the data itself is relatively small (50,000 - 70,000 for each type of node) there will be a number of edges (relationships) between them (almost all directional). This, I know, is relatively easy to represent with an SDF store (such as BrightstarDB) or something like Microsoft's Trinity (or really many of the noSQL options). The thing that, I think, makes this a unique use case is that each relationship will have a timeframe associated with it (start and end dates). Right now, I'm thinking of just storing this in a relational structure and dealing with the headaches of "traversing the graph", but I'm looking for suggestions on a better approach (both in terms of data structure and server): Column ================ From_Node_ID Relationship To_Node_ID StartDate EndDate Any suggestions or thoughts are welcomed.
