  I've developed a website using PHP but I implemented it on Windows OS and hosted it on Windows server. I just searched the PHP job market to know the on-going technology requirement and to keep my knowledge up-to-date accordingly with the job market. I see more are asking for LAMP stack. I understand the sort of skills required for a developer in PHP and MySQL. But coming to the Linux and Apache what kind of the skills exactly companies expect from a developer? On what should I be focusing in case of Linux, Apache whilst developing my website using these LAMP stack? I am going to develop a new website and want it to be using LAMP. But I want to know what difference it makes? Why LAMP stack got more demand in the job market compared to WAMP ? • Tracking down memory issues affecting a website

  I've got a website (Wordpress based) that became unresponsive. I SSH'd into the server and saw that we were out of memory. Errors in my apache log files indicated the same... things failing to be allocated due to lack of memory). Restarting the server fixes it. So I look in access.log and error.log around the time of the incident but I see nothing strange. No extra traffic, no unusual requests. In fact the only request around the time of the problem was one from Googlebot for an rss feed... at that point I start to see 500 response codes in the logs until the machine was rebooted. I look in message.log hoping to see something but there is nothing at all for that entire day (which is odd as there are entries for every other day). The site has a large amount of memory allocated to it and normally runs using about 30% of what is available. My question... how would you go about trying to track this down at this point? What are some other log files I could check or strategies I could take?

• Can't install Linux drivers for ASUS N-13 wireless adapter

  I have a USB N13 wireless Adapter with install CD-- For Windows. I downloaded drivers from ASUS FOR N13 for Linux. Disregard install CD that came with adapter; it's for Windows. I then downloaded Windows Wireless driver install program app from Software Center in Ubuntu 12.10. The problem is me. I am newbie with all things linux; software sources, G Debi, default archive manager, synaptic package manager and the Terminal. The downloaded driver file is a .zip file. I managed to extract it to a tar.gz file and then to open it to the contained files. When I use the Windows Wireless driver program it ends up telling me there is no .inf file and goes no further. It wants to install .inf file but I don't even see one in all the files. Can someone please help me . I think you can tell by my wording I don't have a clue. I hope this is'nt too chatty. I've tried to be explicit and to the point. Thank you. Oh, this is on an ASUS LAPTOP K53E. I've looked all over Ask Ubuntu and finally found some questions even on the N13 but they didn't help; still some differences in the exact problem.

• I just recursively chmod'd everything under / to 750. Any tips?

  I won't be the first and I won't be the last, I suppose. While playing around with the find command, I made a whoops and it would appear that instead of changing the permissions of the ~/web directory to 750, it changed the permissions of the entire filesystem (/) to 750, however I'm not certain, but any attempt to investigate is thwarted by Permission denied messages. For everything. This was the offending command: sudo find ~/web . type d -exec chmod 750 {} If I'm not mistaken, the Ubuntu team disabled root logins as a safety precaution so I'm out of ideas. I'm (obviously) a total newbie when it comes to file permissions so I was wondering if anyone had some good or even some bad advice to share. I've mentally prepped myself to losing everything on the computer which is only of mild consequence, since I have backups, but I did do a bit of work on this box over the week and it would be a shame to lose it all due to a boneheaded mistake. If you are reading this message, ask yourself, have you backed up any of your work recently? Thanks in advance for any insights. Feel free to scold me for using sudo carelessly

• For an inexperienced VPS administrator, is Nginx a suitable alternative to Apache?

  I couldn't think of the best way to set the title, so if somebody wants to edit it to something more appropriate, I'd be grateful ;) I'm what I would consider to be an inexperienced user/ administrator when it comes to running my VPS. I can get by with a few CLI commands, I can set up Webmin and I can set up Yum repos, but beyond the very basic stuff, I'm out of my depth. So far, I'm running Apache. I don't know it particularly well, but I can get by with editing httpd.conf if I'm told what to edit. I've heard good things about Nginx and that it's not as resource-hungry as Apache. I'd like to give it a go, but I can't find any information about its suitability for administrators like me, with little experience of sysadmin or web server config. Webmin now has support for Nginx, so getting it installed and running probably won't be too much of a problem. What I'm wondering is, from a site adminstrator perspective, is running Nginx as transparent as running Apache? IE, at the moment, I can just throw up Wordpress and Drupal sites without having much to worry about or having to make any config changes to Apache. Would Nginx be as transparent?

• How to handle new domain names?

  I have a new product which I'll call a pen ink reloader. I have a website using my products name, for example, www.inkywink.com which I want to have accessed by searches for keywords such as "pen ink", "pen out of ink" "ink for pens" etc. , since nobody knows that a pen ink reloader exists. I see that its quite difficult to get on front page for these keywords since they have lots of competition. However I notice that the exact phrases I want to rank highly for are available as domains. I purchase "www.penink.com" and "penoutofink.com" which for arguments sake are highly searched and the perfect keywords to get eyes on my money site www.inkywink.com . Two questions: 1. What is my best option to leverage those names so that they appear near top of searches so that I can get traffic to my money site? Do I just have them redirect 301 to inkywink.com or should I create small original content on each with links to my main site? 2. If I just have them redirected to inkywink.com, am I able to use keywords in metatag and headers for each site separately or do they all automatically obtain the same headers and tags as the site to which theyre redirected ? Thanks to anyone who can help as I'm a real newbie to all this.

  I have a static mockup page, which I want to "customize" by switching a variable used in image-src and link-href attributes. Paths will look like this: <img src="/some/where/VARIABLE/img/1.jpg" alt="" /> <link rel="some" href="/some/where/VARIABLE/stuff/foo.bar" /> I'm setting a cookie with the VARIABLE value on the preceding page and now want to modfiy the paths accordingly by replacing VARIABLE with the cookie value. I'm a htaccess newbie. This is what I have (doesn't work): <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> # get cookie value cookie RewriteCond %{HTTP_COOKIE} client=([^;]*) # rewrite/redirect to correct file RewriteRule ^/VARIABLE/(.+)$ /%1/$1 [L] </IfModule> So I thought my first line gets the cookie value and stores this in %1. And on the second line I'm filtering VARIABLE, replace it with the cookie value and whatever comes after VARIABLE in $1. Thanks for sheeding some light on what I'm doing, doing wrong and if I can do this at all using htaccess. EDIT: I'm sort of halfway through, but it's still not working...   I write web-based software and simple website ("Home", "Who we are", "Contact"). For a simple website I'm using a covered GPL v3 framework. The user surf the website, send an email, take info, etc. I repeat: simple website, not a Joomla or Wordpress. 1) Will the website be covered with the GPL? I don't modify the framework. I'm using his classes in other classes... (OOP). 2) For the point 1, if yes, do I need to add (e.g. in the footer) name of framework and his link? 3) I must permit download of entire website to study code (nothing that a programmer has interest in)? E.g. placing it in Github? 4) If 2 is NO, how you can "understand" that we use that framework? In effect no php lines are exposed to the browser... You cannot understand that when you push "Send email" the site is calling $this->send($email). If you write me an email "Are you using XXX framework"? I can answer NO.

• All files gone after running fsck. How can I recover my files?

  I am a newbie in Linux. So this is my story I installed Ubuntu server 10.04lts. It worked great for many months, until today i decided to run fsck on the system partition and although it warned me, I kept pressing yes and now it will only boot into grub prompt. So i read some article and tried grub reinstall. But before performing grub reinstall, i decided to run fsck again from Ubuntu 10.04 lts for desktop live CD. The fsck painfully passes, now my drive is recognized as ext4 system and I am able to mount it again. However, all i can see is just boot directory and lost&found. I tried to perform grub reinstalling by doing grup-install stuff, now my grub is still not loading right, my files are missing, and the weird thing is that the amount I found used by boot and lost n found is only 5gb and the amount used in he hdd is 8 gb. So my files must be somewhere in the hdd. Is there any sinple way maybe a windows tool or something yo recover my files? I only need to retrieve my database backup and everything else can go. I am freaking out here. Please help.

• Grub2 won't detect Ubuntu 11.10 OS after reinstalling Win XP hal.dll.

  Hi I'm an Ubuntu newbie here. I've installed ubuntu 11.10 to dual boot on a single HDD. I did a manual partition and basically forgot all the on what sda my /boot partition is. My installation worked out just fine and I tried to install updates with it. After a while I when I wanted to boot to windows it showed that I was missing a "hal.dll" file. I've fixed this problem using the windows resource CD but then after booting up my PC it went straight to Windows XP. I've tried to manually reinstall Grub2 using a Live CD/USB and it worked but I think I have installed in on a different "sda#" (sda5 to be exact) because even though Grub2 loads when I boot my PC, only windows XP shows up as my OS and Ubuntu 11.10 is missing. Now, I've tried installing boot-repair to solve my problems using Live CD/USB. Boot-repair tells me that boot configuration was successful but then a basic grub interface shows up (the black one with a command line grub showing up. Now I can't even boot to Windows XP. Any help would be really appreciated. BTW here's the notes from boot repair that I was asked to save: http://paste.ubuntu.com/890228/ As you can see there are boot files on sda5 and sda7. I think that's the core problem that I have right now. Thanks in advance!

  I have resigned from Oracle and thus will soon leave the GlassFish group. I feel very proud looking back at what we've achieved as a team with GlassFish in the past few years, including those past two years at Oracle. If you know anything about the history of application servers at Sun, you'll recognize that building such a community around GlassFish and its amazing number of downloads is nothing short of a small miracle. The Java EE platform has also seen a strong resurgence, bringing it back to the forefront of effective enterprise Java development in many ways. Having been hired by Sun some 13 years ago to sell NetDynamics I certainly feel that I leave the company's application server in *much* better shape. Oracle has ambitious plans for GlassFish and has been in my opinion a good steward for this community. I see no reason for this to change and I do expect the community to keep on pushing Oracle to get even better with time. This ride has been intense and the people I've met and worked with, both inside and outside Sun/Oracle, have made the experience the best one of my career. I am looking for interface similar to oed.com but clean, minimal as we are not going to have such more information. Just words in English and it's other language equivalent. Here we are talking about a language which has not yet been in the Internet. It's should be collaborative.

• How to connect to my own WiFi using Broadcom STA drivers?

  I'm trying hard to switch to Linux from Windows because of my engineering project. Unfortunately, everything is against that change! Before I have installed Broadcom STA proprietary drivers, I was seeing on NetworkManager and nm-applet only local radio-internet-access networks. After I installed Broadcom STA, I see my neighbor's wireless network (channel 11, WEP) Neither before nor after the installation is own wireless network available. Computer: Asus Lamborghini VX6 Ubuntu: 12.04 LTS 64-bit Router: ASUS N55U (A1) with newest AsusWRT firmware Network: Channel 5 (tried also 10 and 11, both on 20 and 40MHz bands), WPA2 Personal, 2,4 + 5 GHz (what is not very important, 'cause the wlan card in VX6 is only 2,4GHz). Network works fine on Windows, also through D-Link repeater on the other floor. Unfortunately, same network is invisible to Ubuntu on same machine. I have tried some combinations with other GUIs but it did not work. Are there any better drivers for Ubuntu? I need that network badly, but I'm an Ubuntu newbie, so I don't know how to solve that problem. Please help.

  I'm a Java newbie who just a made a simple Java program using SWT for GUI via eclipse Juno. The code was working and the program was able to run inside eclipse, so I compiled it and made it a runnable jar file so it can be run outside eclipse. I tried to run it using the terminal and this error came up. Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Could not load SWT library. Reasons: no swt-gtk-4233 in java.library.path no swt-gtk in java.library.path Can't load library: /home/abody/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/libswt-gtk-4233.so Can't load library: /home/abody/.swt/lib/linux/x86_64/libswt-gtk.so at org.eclipse.swt.internal.Library.loadLibrary(Library.java:331) at org.eclipse.swt.internal.Library.loadLibrary(Library.java:240) at org.eclipse.swt.internal.C.<clinit>(C.java:21) at org.eclipse.swt.internal.Converter.wcsToMbcs(Converter.java:63) at org.eclipse.swt.internal.Converter.wcsToMbcs(Converter.java:54) at org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Display.<clinit>(Display.java:133) at Class1.main(Class1.java:12) So now it looks like it can't find "libswt-gtk-4233.so" and the other file. However, when I took a look at he ".swt" folder I had an "libswt-gtk-3740.so" not 4233. So its trying to find a file that is more up-to-date. So what does that mean, should I update SWT? what's going on?

• Single-developer GIT workflow (moving from straightforward FTP)

  I'm trying to decide whether moving to VCS is sensible for me. I am a single web developer in a small organisation (5 people). I'm thinking of VCS (Git) for these reasons: version control, offsite backup, centralised code repository (can access from home). At the moment I work on a live server generally. I FTP in, make my edits and save them, then reupload and refresh. The edits are usually to theme/plugin files for CMSes (e.g. concrete5 or Wordpress). This works well but provides no backup and no version control. I'm wondering how best to integrate VCS into this procedure. I would envisage setting up a Git server on the company's web server, but I'm not clear how to push changes out to client accounts (usually VPSes on the same server) - at the moment I simply log into SFTP with their details and make the changes directly. I'm also not sure what would sensibly represent a repository - would each client's website get their own one? Any insights or experience would be really helpful. I don't think I need the full power of Git by any means, but basic version control and de facto cloud access would be really useful.

• How do I partition my Hard drive to install Kubuntu?

  I am a complete newbie to partitioning and I would like some guidance here. Can anyone explain what exactly I should be doing here? I am installing Kubuntu 12.04 on a currently Windows 7 laptop. My current Partitions say this: /dev/sda /dev/sda1 ntfs 104 MB 35 MB /dev/sda2 ntfs 319965 MB 87164 MB Basically, what I want is some guidance on what exactly to do here. All I want is a partition for my OS (Which will be Kubuntu 12.04) and a partition for all of my data. I also want to restart fresh with my hard drive, with only what I mentioned on here. I am installing Kubuntu from a flash drive (I set it up as a bootable device with Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.9), as I do not have any blank CDs/DVDs to burn to. What should I name my partitions? What should I set the type as? What size do they need to be? Edit: My hard drive is 320GB. Just looked it up in my BIOS. This computer will mainly be used for internet browsing and overall just messing around with the Linux OS.

What I did is moved the content, photos, pictures and all 250 posts from blog old to blog new. Both the blog name are changed as they are pointing to different domain names! I read helpful things in this site itself at here. I will no longer use blog old, moreover I am concerned about the SEO of the blog new. The blog new is fairly new (just 24 hours and no pages have been indexed in Google). I have done the following stuff: Deleted all the post share at Facebook fan Page, Twitter profile, Google+ page and Finally deleted the fan page/Twitter, Google+ page. Edited the link backs of old blog in the blog new. The question I have is: How do I prevent duplicate content issues? Do I go straightaway and delete all the posts in blog old? Should I start sharing the blog posts in blog new? Should I submit the new site to Webmaster Tools or wait for few weeks? Every comment here is appreciated! What issues can I face relating to SEO?

  Nullable types vs Non-nullable types   While developing our C# projects its frequent the null comparison operation to avoid null exceptions. This simple operation is mainly coded using the "var x = null" code example inside an if clause. However not all types of variables are nullable, which means that setting a variable to null is not allowed in every cases, it depends on what kind of type are you defining. But what if there was an extension to your non-nullable type that would convert your variable types to nullable? This extension really exists. As I said before in C# you have nullable types which represent all the values of an underlying type, and an additional null value and can be declared easily using "T?", where T is the type of the variable and for example the normal int type cannot be null, so its a non-nullable type, however if you define a "int?" your variable can be null, what you do is convert a non-nullable type to a nullable type. Example: int x=null;     Not allowed     int? x=null;   Allowed     While using nullable types you can check if a variable is null the same way you do it with nullable types:     But what about setting a default value when a certain variable is null?   In this cases the c# .net framework let you set a default value when you try to assign a nullable type to a non-nullable type, using the ?? operator. If you don't use this operator you can still catch the InvalidOperationException which is throw in this cases.   I am a web developer that is starting to look into hosting his own website. I would like to showcase my programming skills (PHP, MySQl, C#, Wordpress). My knowledge of languages I am OK with but the actually hosting site is where my knowledge starts to get a little shaky. I know the basics (bandwidth, sub-domains, re-write rules) but I would love your input, to help me formulate a check list of certain web-hosting services that I should be on the look-out for. Also I was wondering if there were any reliable hosting providers who give you the option to host both c# code-behinds and PHP code. As I would like to have two versions of my site, one in C# and one in PHP the hope is that if I need to look for another job this website will help me show possible employers my server side knowledge.   First off, I'm not looking for this answer: "learn PHP/MySQL, JQuery, HTML/CSS...." My background, I wear many hats, and do many things. Currently I manage investment accounts with a business partner who is also a friend. He happens to be attending business / law school perusing a joint JD and MBA. As a result, we're putting our into "coast", maintaining our current clients, but not acquiring more. Recently I've picked up some freelance graphic design / web development / online marketing side work (Photoshop, HTML/CSS, WordPress) through some personal networks. The work is enjoyable; now I'm thinking about expanding it into a larger business with these primary goals: augment my finances (I'm shooting for about $1,000-2,000 per mo.), learn new technologies, involve myself with meaningful work. As an entrepreneur I don't mind the aspects of running a business that hassle other freelancers... -- the marketing -- the billing -- etc. I'm considering targeting the small to middle market businesses and organizations where I can contribute in marketing, design, and development building projects from the ground up. Thus I'll have freedom to decide the specific technology (I won't have to work with an existing code base). What kinds of projects should I focus on? What technologies are a good fit for this style of work? For example: It might be fun to develop with Ruby on Rails. However, maybe a lot of projects would be rolling out e-commerce solutions. Thus, I should focus on PHP due to more shopping cart options, skipping ROR entirely.

• English major new to programming. What language should I learn first? [closed]

  After working extensively an internet startup in a marketing positions, I've decided to wade into the entrepreneurship pool with a startup of my own. The only problem: I don't have any particular technical skills to speak of. Although I can find a technical co-founder, I'd rather not be the stereotypical 'business guy' drumming his fingers on the desk and asking 'how much longer?' as my technical co-founder codes away. I would like to understand code and what's happening in the backend, even if I don't end up being anything more than a 'passable' programmer. With this in mind, which language should I try to learn first? For the record, I'm quite proficient with HTML, CSS, and a bit of JavaScript. I have some familiarity with PHP because I've toyed around with WordPress a lot, but my knowledge is limited at best. My math skills are quite strong. I took some advanced calculus courses in college since I've always enjoyed the subject. While my goals are to learn web development, I wouldn't mind learning some hardcore object oriented programming skills in C or Java as well.

I enjoy it so far and actually enjoy it except for when my computer freezes. This has been quite often so far. I've done a little research and it seems my problem is with the GPU. When it does freeze I can move the cursor but cannot click on anything. I also cannot run Alt+F2 xkill. So my only previous experience has been with Windows and I would normally solve an issue like this with Ctrl+Alt+Delete and just shut down the offending program. I do not know how to do this in Ubuntu and not even sure this would even work. Please help me if you can, how do I deal with a freeze without having to resort to a hard shutdown, I cannot seem to run the computer over one hour without experiencing this issue. I tried accessing my GRUB menu on startup but I can't even seem to do that. Also the only real program I have been running whenever this happens seems to be Firefox. Thank you, appreciate any help. • Why is my USB data transfer so slow?

  Whenever I do any kind of file transfer using USB, whether to a USB stick, or with my Android phone, or anything else, it is ridiculously slow. It says 59.8 KB/sec, which would be an awesome speed if this were 1991 and I was using a modem to dial up to my local BBS. Surely USB technology is better than that...? 37 seconds to move less data than the equivelent of 1 MP3 file? Also, regardless of what it says about speed and time, the reality is much, much slower. I routinely see it say something like "37 seconds left" and have to wait for minutes. Sometimes, if I want to move large amounts of files, it can say it will take 8 hours or more. Is this normal? My computer may not be the most awesome on the market, and about a year old, but it's an i5 with 4GB RAM and modern components, so surely this isn't the hardware's fault. What can I do to get better USB data transfer performance? Also, I did look at this question, but my newbie eyes don't see anything that look like an actual solution, just a lot of discussion about what transfer rates could or should be.
