  In my workplace I have a coworker who have been working in the company for 3 years (1 more than me) doing stuff surrounding to software development but not software development. We need to run a new project in C and we have a lot of professional disagreements that in my opinion are caused by too much pride to his skill. For example he strives to insert code unnecessary code generation using C macros as possible instead of writing the same C code with the correct separations to functions. I tried to explain to him why inline function are a better replacement for C macros but he said to me that he knows better than gcc how to inline a function. How can I handle such a person?

• How to setup VPN as Proxy

  I have an PerfectPrivacy VPN connected via the OpenVPN-Network-Manger-Plugin (Ubuntu 12.04.1) and I want to assign a system wide proxy over that VPN. I have tried proxydriver that should do that automatically, but it works partially. The browser says that I have the IP of the VPN, but when I tried to send an eMail over SMTP (Port 25), I can´t connect to the mail server. In our company the smtp server port is closed, but that should be not a problem, when I do that over a VPN, shouldn´t it? greetings

• What are good gui guidelines for standard actions (usability)

  For example: Delete's should have confirms. Confirmations should be green. Prefer list-of-values over free text whenever possible. This was just a sample. I am looking for references that simply and clearly list common 'should do's' in terms of ui, interactions and usability. My company is new to software development and they keep getting suprised by contractors that don't do the obvious so I am looking for good references about the right way to do it and the basic things to always consider (like the above). Obviously style is subjects, but things like delete confirms shouldn't be.

• Passing variable from SharePoint to external website

  My company has a SharePoint site that is administered by the IT department (versus the Web Developer... go figure!). We have partnered with a vendor that has built a site for our staff to order customized stationery, etc. I need to create a link on the SharePoint site that will take the user to the external site but identify them individually. The vendor is suggesting this format: https://www.VENDORSITE.com/UI/Profile.hcf?id=a02b8106-4115-47cd-bca7-ce4dd447ef89&username=<user name>&password=<password>&name1=<first name>&name2=<last name>&email=<email> Here's the problem: I don't know how to pass that info, or even a single variable, from the SharePoint site to the external site. I would appreciate ANY suggestions.

• Any recommendations for a domain buying negotiating service? [closed]

  The best domain for my niche and related is owned by a guy in San Fransisco, and I want to buy the domain from him but I don't want to deal with him directly (even though he has contacted me in the past). I need to find an intermediary company that can handle the negotiation for me. I don't expect to have to pay much since the guy has been squatting on it for more than 15 years and according to the Internet Wayback Machine it has never actually been used for anything at all - he has never added any value to it. It kind of irritates me that such a good domain has been sitting in this guy's closet gather dust for 15 years. I know that GoDaddy has a domain buying negotiating service (and the domain is registered through them, which may make it easier), but I really, really do not want to do business with GoDaddy if I don't have too. Do any of you know of other firms that deal with this sort of thing?

• Do you think that in the future it'll be possible to develop games on OS X by using Python and the latest library "Sprite kit" made by Apple? [on hold]

  I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards

  When XNA was released in 2006, I was happy and started doing indie attempts. After 3 years or so, there were lots of forum discussions on prospects of AAA game development in C#, and how a high performance vedio game can easily be programmed in C#. Suddenly after 2-3 more years, these discussions have died down and everybody seems like recommending native C++... What programming language should I practice on for long term? Should I stick with C# or do an extra effort for C++? Will AAA game companies adopt C# as a replacement to C++? Note : I aim to work at a AAA game company.

• Freelancers do you charge for going on site to do work?

I've already won some work from a local company doing C# development and already quoting an hourly rate for some work that i am doing from my office. However on one upcoming project I've been asked to come on-site (client office) to work a full week. Is it reasonable to charge more than my regular hourly rate for working on site? And how should i justify the extra charges?

  I need a cheap host that I can upgrade if needed for a startup. From searching, FatCow and iPage seem reliable and inexpensive web hosting services with a Unix OS and good bandwidth + disk space. I suspect they were bought from the same company. They propose to offer unlimited bandwidth/disc space and perks like AdSense/Facebook credit however, they're packages range from 1-3 years @ 3.15 USD/mo, there isn't a monthly package but they do allow you to cancel at anytime and there servers run on wind-mill generated energy which is a plus. I was suspicious because I couldnt seem to find one negative review about them, just affiliate pages until I read a review explaining they're strict policies on copywritten data. Has anyone experience with one of these two hosts?

  I currently run a Wedding Car website that is ranking in the top 5 for my local area, its not doing so well outside of that. I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. I know keeping content fresh is important but nothing much changes so I am unsure what options I have? Should I create a blog and talk about the cars, weddings etc? I am totally unsure where to go with this website, the site currently has a few images and a small amount of text. • Is it possible to outsource design properly?

  I work in a company going through a downsizing process. It is assumed that a lot of "let go" developers jobs will eventually be outsourced. Some of those programmers had some design to do. Is it possible to outsource both design and creation/coding properly? I feel that by outsourcing design, we lose any in-house capability of really "owning" the code. It will be very difficult to maintain. Also we'll have a hard time ensuring a proper development. How can I address those issues?

• Reputable web host in mainland China? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? We currently have a rather poorly set up Windows 2003 box with little to no support based in Shanghai; with no control panel/mail server. I am told for legal/business reasons the host must be based in the same location as the company for the website; but this could well be misinformation. Are there any well-known, quality hosts in China that offer reliable English-speaking support? We did consider GoDaddy on the west coast of America, but were informed of the risk of the site being shut down without any notice. We don't have any technically-minded contacts out there to advise, and hoping that someone will have some more experience in this department. Thank you.

• Connection timed out when connecting to a website (ubuntu only)

  I've been struggling with these problem for months. It happens randomly and it happens on Ubuntu only (12.04). It's about my hosted company website. Some facts: I can ping it I can traceroute it I can dig it I can make a nslookup But whenever I try to open it in Chrome it won't open. I also tried using polipo but got same connection time out issue. I'm connected through a LAN network and I'm experiencing no problem with any other website. Is there a more accurate debugging technique I'm missing other than pinging/tracerouting, etc.?

  I'm applying for a company far away and if I get an interview it will probably be done remotely. I have been searching for advices regarding this but all tips seem to be directed at face-to-face meetings (things like "shake hands firmly"). What are the differences? How can I make the best out of those differences? Update: This is a software developer position, so there's also something about technical questions (such as, I can Google anything that they ask ;) This question also applies to any freelancers who are dealing with customers, or recruiters who are interviewing remotely. • Backing up VPS and Database Servers for website

  I currently have an "un-managed" (no help from hosting company) windows vps server. I am working on a good backup solution to return my site back online within a few hours. I am pretty comfortable backing up and restoring my database, however what is a good solution for backing up my VPS for easy recovery? Should I just use windows backup and create an image? I'm open to suggestions. Additionally, has anyone had to restore an entire VPS before? Is it reasonable to have it back up and running in a few hours?

Can you afford to just release them after internal testing, or do they have to be betatested by customers first? Situation: This is a young commercial project, produced by a one-person company. • To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

  There are some job requirements of project management experience for a programmer, such as: the candidate has to have some experience managing a project, not necessarily with subordinates, but rather having worked on a project all the way from design down to test. I was wondering what "subordinates" mean here? if there are some books, webpages or elsewhere with both general guideline and simple practical sample projects to help one get some basics about the whole process of a project.   My site is working if i type it as domain.com. But If I type it as www.domain.com I get an error 404 page. The domain is registered with Google Apps for Business and the hosting is done with another company. I have some A records that are pointing the site to this server. However, as it appears the A records are only working halfway. What do I have to do to make it working for both http:// and http://www ?

• FxCop / Code Analysis with VS2010 Ultimate

  I've getting some information about this, but I still can find a proper answer, I was asked recently in my company for this : "run a fxcop analysis on that code and tell me the results". Ok, I have VS2010 Ultimate which has code analysis, but before making any comment, I browse it on the internet cause I want to implement the best choice... So, let's say I'm gonna use the same rules on both analyzers: Should I recommend using one above the other? Should I say "hey, thats kinda old, let's use code analysis!" Should I get the same results on different computers? (for what I undersand, fxcop gives you some "points" and for what I've read, sometimes it gives you diff points on diff computers, I don't know about this with code analysis Thanks, any help would be appreciated

  I'm currently using godaddy for all of my company domains, and I'm very unsatisfied with their service, specially with their site, so we are trying to migrate those domains to another provider. The question is, How do I transfer my domains to another domain registrar? I'm not talking about transferring domain records (A, MX...) but to use the same domains with another provider, and redo all the configuration again. For example, one of our blogs is hosted in Slicehost and we feel very confortable with their record editing tool. • Can you recommend a good test plan template?

  Can you recommend a good test plan template for an agile testing team? I know there are templates for testing on the web and have already looked at some found by search engines, but I could really use something lightweight and something that has already been tried by skilled testers and is known to work well. Many templates I've seen give me the feeling that writing test documents is expected to be a third of the work that those testers are doing, but my team really prefers to use less documentation and more actual test writing. We use a wiki for documentation, so an approach that lends itself to living documents would be great. My hope is that using a more structured approach to test planning will increase the usefulness of my test plan while reducing the effort to create it by allowing me to think about the tests, and not the format and structure of the plan. My workplace does not have something already on hand, so whatever I start doing might be adopted by the company.
