• How to get an email notification when a USB storage device is inserted?

  We are running more than 600 Ubuntu systems in our company. It is a data centre so we have certain policies. We have disabled the usage of storage devices in all the Ubuntu systems. However we would like to configure email alerts. If someone inserts storage devices, we should get an email Alert with subject as below, Email Alert: STORAGE DEVICE FOUND on IP: 172.29.35.18 Note: Where as for Windows system, we have certain policies applied in our DC. So there is no problem with Windows system. We need to receive alerts for Ubuntu system also. Any way to accomplish the above task would be great.

The most fundamental relationship would be that a "product" has "versions" and a given "version" is used by a "client." • Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • Is the increase in earning potential for a software developer enough to justify the cost of pursuing a masters degree? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is a Master's worth it? I am considering possibly enrolling in distance education at Kaplan University in order to pursue my masters. On one hand, I would prefer to have more free time so that I can continue to study for certifications and play with the technologies that interest me, work on my little side projects, etc. On the other hand, I am wondering how much difference it can make for my career if I go ahead and get a masters. I have been a .NET programmer since about 2004/2005. I'm currently working in a stable position but possibly considering a move to phoenix when my company's contract runs its course. There is not enough time between now and then for me to be complete with my masters, but I'm just trying to consider whether I should start. The main thing I am trying to determine is really whether or not the increase in earning potential is going to make the cost of pursuing my masters degree a good investment. Any thoughts?

• robots.txt, how effective is it and how long does it take?

  We recently updated the site to a single page site using jQuery to slide between "pages". So we now have only index.php. When you search the company on engines such as Google, you get the site and a listing of its sub pages which now lead to outdated pages. Our plan doesn't allow us to edit the .htaccess and the old pages are .html docs so I cannot use PHP redirects either. So if I put in place a robots.txt telling the engines to not crawl beyond index.php, how effective will this be in preventing/removing crawled sub pages. And rough guess, how long before the search engines would update?

  My company has corporate offices around the country and I have been hired under contract to work in one office while the rest of my team works in another. We are in the same time zone, but definitely remote. I have not met the team yet, but will be flying up there soon. What is your best advice for integrating and developing with this team? • bad practice to create a print friendly page to remove the use of pdfs?

  the company I work for has a one page invoice that uses the library tcpdf. they wanted to do some design changes that I found are just incredibly difficult for setting up in .pdf format. using html/css I could easily create the page and have it print very nicely, but I have a feeling that I am over looking something. is it a good practice to set up a page just for printing? and if not, is it at least better than putting out a ugly .pdf? I could also use the CSS inline so that if they wanted to download it and open it they could.

• How to use PostgreSQL on AWS - Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm extremely new to cloud-computing, Linux, and PostgreSQL, so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I've managed to create an m1.large instance running Ubuntu 11.10, connect via Putty SSH, and install PostgreSQL (sudo apt-get install postgresql), but that is as far as I've gotten. My goal is to run several python web-scraping scripts that I've written on this instance (so as not to eat up all of our bandwidth (smaller company at the moment)) and insert the scraped data into a PostgreSQL table on the instance and later retrieve that data to store on our local server (as I've heard AWS EBS is unreliable and I don't want to take chances). How can I configure PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? How can I access the data from my machine? I currently use PgAdmin3 to manage PosgreSQL on our local server. Can I use this same interface to manage PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? Any suggestions, solutions, links, etc is greatly appreciated. And again, if this is a dumb question, I apologize.

• client website compromised, found a strange .php file. any ideas?

  I do support work for a web development company and I found a suspicious file today on the website of one of our clients called "hope.php" which contained several eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....'))) commands (which on a site like this, usually indicates that they've been hacked). Searching for the compromised site on google, we got a bunch of results which link to hope.php with various query strings that seem to generate different groups of seo terms like so: (the second result from the top is legitimate, all the rest are not) Here is the source of "hope.php": http://pastebin.com/7Ss4NjfA And here is the decoded version I got by replacing the eval()s with echo(): http://pastebin.com/m31Ys7q5 Any ideas where this came from or what it is doing? I've of course already removed the file from the server, but I've never seen code like this so I'm rather curious as to its origin. Where could I go to find more info about something like this?

• Sceptic in a SCRUM Team

  My company has recently switched to an Agile WoW and as a part of it we've started using SCRUM. While I'm very comfortable with it and feel that this WoW is superior to a traditional one, some of my teammates don't share the same opinion. In fact they are very skeptical about "all that agile stuff", and don't take it seriously. As an example, one of the teammates is always late on the meetings, and doesn't really care about it. The management IMO tries not to notice this (maybe because it's a new Wow, and it takes time for the people to get used to it). • Letting go of a project

  I've been the sole developer of a niche product for my company for nearly 6 years. I've grown quite attached to the project and I enjoy working on it. However, it was the decision of management to take the project out of my hands and move it under the wings of another team. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time letting go of the project. I'm sad to see it leave my hands since I've put so much time into it and enjoyed working on it, but it also allows me to work on new things. The most recent (similar) document our company has used is over 80 pages, and that does not include coding standards/conventions documents. My concern is that this document will not be consumable and will therefore fail. What should be in a development approach document? Are there any decent guidelines on this topic? You keep trying different workarounds but every time something different isn't working. Every time you get one step closer you also get one (or more) step farther from solving this problem and its now been 3 hours when this should have taken you 10 minutes. And it still isn't solved. There is no one in your company who can help, and you are about to put your fist through your screen. At this point you are so frustrated you can no longer think about the problem clearly. • Handheld device software - Handheld tuners?

  Hey I've been looking around and really don't understand what software some of these company's use for their handheld devices. I've used a lot of Handheld Tuners (Cobb Accessport, Diablo Sport). I've gotten more and more knowledgable of programming and I'm really wanting to understand what software they use on these devices to have a graphical interface. And to hold all the files to flash over to the ecu. I'm just unsure how you would get basically all the components to work together (screen, buttons, memory) without having drivers installed. I could be totally wrong here on using the term drivers, but that's what I would like some help to get more knowledge on (only thing I've really found is making a handheld game boy from scratch,but that was using a emulator.). I've tried looking it up but can't really find a good write up or explanation anywhere I look. It says on the wiki: No licenses or payments are required to be able to stream or distribute content in AAC format.[36] This reason alone makes AAC a much more attractive format to distribute content than MP3, particularly for streaming content (such as Internet radio). However, a patent license is required for all manufacturers or developers of AAC codecs. For this reason free and open source software implementations such as FFmpeg and FAAC may be distributed in source form only, in order to avoid patent infringement. (See below under Products that support AAC, Software.) But the xSplit program had to cancel the AAC for free members because they have to pay royalties per person. Is this true (that you have to pay per each person that uses aac)? If you do have to pay, which company do you pay to and how does one apply?

• need help connecting to bitbucket repository with sourceTree on windows 8

  I'm having trouble adding and cloning my repo on bitbucket to the sourceTree app, we're only starting with this now and we're a small company, so there's not much knowledge around this. now I've gone through The documentation on sourceTree for help, but I've noticed when I select my repo on bitbucket, it uses the repo url I select and appends a .git at the end. Then a notice message says This is not a valid source path / URL, but when I click Details... I get a dialogBox with nothing in it and an ok button. and when I'm done entering the details the 'Clone' button remains disabled. Is this Windows 8 or am I actually doing something wrong? Now I usually use ubuntu, but we just got these new ASUS ultrabooks at work and it's a pain to install any linux Distro on here. So I'm stuck with windows 8

• Am I getting paid a reasonable wage for web engineering?

  I've been doing some research and it looks like most people in my line of work - WEB ENGINEERING/WEB APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - that get paid hourly, make anywhere from $30-80 an hour for their work. With that said, I have SEVEN years of experience with web development including OOP-PHP, MySQL, jQuery, OOP-JS, interface design, ajax, database architecture, etc. I am also very strong with visual design and workflow - thus, I've made some really high quality interactive interfaces. I also have a lot of experience with Zend Framework, Symfony, Wordpress, Drupal, etc and a really strong portfolio to show for it. Here's the catch: I'm 20 years old, haven't graduated from college yet (I'm doing part time school and ~30 hours a week of web development.) But I've literally been doing web apps since I was 13 years old. So my question is: is $14 an hour a reasonable starting wage for working at a company part time?

• What is this chargeback scam? [on hold]

  We have a scammer that is buying our e-Books and then performing chargebacks. Our e-Books don't have DRM, so if they wanted to resell them, they would only need to buy each book once. But instead, they keep buying the same books over and over again and then performing hundreds of chargebacks. We have created some additional rules in our fraud protection tools to block certain aspects, even though all the info looks legit, and are hopeful this will slow them down. But my question is: What is the scam? If they aren't getting any product and they only get chargebacks for something they already purchased, then they can't get additional money from the credit card company, so then what's their motivation?
