• DB auto failover in c# does not work when the principal server physically goes offline

  I'm setting up DB auto failover in C# with SQL Server 2008 and I have a 'high safety with automatic failover mirror' using a witness setup and my connection string looks like "Server=tcp:DC01; Failover Partner=tcp:DC02; database=dbname; uid=sewebsite;pwd=somerndpwd;Connect Timeout=10;Pooling=True;" During testing, when I turn off the SQL Server service on the principal server the auto failover works like a charm, but if I take the principal server offline (by shutting down the server or killing the network card) auto failover does not work and my website just times out. I found this article where the second last post suggests that its because we are using named pipes which does not work when the principal goes offline, but we force TCP in our connection string. What am I missing to get this DB auto failover working?

• Video encoding for archival

  I would like to archive some home videos (DV). I don't need to save them losslessly, but I would like to encode them in something high-quality. What format is both pretty indistinguishable from the original and will likely be readable 15 years from now? WMA makes me nervous, because it's only one company that makes it, and they're constantly coming out with newer formats. (VLC couldn't open my WMAs that Windows Movie Maker made.) Other things I've considered are h.264, Ogg Theora, DivX, and Xvid. I don't mind paying for something, but usually that means the format is owned by only one vendor.

• Problem with internet connection

  Hi all, I am working on windows vista. I have got two internet connections, one is wifi connection with high speed. And other is mobile network connection. There is a very strange problem I am getting. When I connect to wi-fi connection I an not able to serf internet(actually not all the sites). I am able to search on Google but when i click on any link in the search list it does not open. But I am able to serf all the pages in google.com domain and also all the pages in stackoverflow domain. But i am not able to go to page http://repo1.maven.org/maven2 But When I am connected by my mobile network. I am able to serf any site. Can you please tell me what might me the problem with my settings.

• Localized database for customers

  The company I work for, has just moved to AWS - and currently they have one very large central database with the instance currently located in America. However, one of their clients has requested that all of their data is held in the EU. So creating an AWS instance in Ireland isn't a problem, the problem is the database and how to manage it. We were considering having another database that runs in the EU for European customers, and use a different primary key step, so that the primary keys will never conflict in case the two locations need to be merged in the future. The problem is, if we have a customer that uses our system in both America, and the EU we would have to create 2 accounts for that user, and reporting across both regions would not be possible as the connection time would be too high. Is there an alternative to set this up?

• 27 days after domain transfer name servers not propogated

  We recently bought the domain: embarrassingnightclubphotos.com 7 days after accepting the transfer the domain finally transferred to our registrar and we immediately changed the name servers from ns*.netregistry.net to amy.ns.cloudflare.com and cody.ns.cloudflare.com 20 days after changing the name servers, the majority of tests show that both old and new nameservers are still being reported: http://intodns.com/embarrassingnightclubphotos.com http://www.whatsmydns.net/#NS/embarrassingnightclubphotos.com We are now ready to launch the new site but this issue is plagueing us as a high proportion of the traffic is still receiving the old nameserves and so hitting the old server. You can tell if you have hit the old or new server as the old server has the value "A" for the meta tag "Location" and the new server has "U". (The old server just has an iframe too!) I have never had this problem before - who is causing this and how should we go about reaching a resolution? Thanks

• Funnelling http traffic

  I have a situation where a large batch of servers (X), on demand, need to request data from a smaller set of web servers (Y). The worst case scenario is if all servers in X decide to fetch different requests to one server in Y. That would be X amount of connections, which could be a very large burst of traffic. The best case scenario is if 1 server in X hit 1 server in Y in tandem. Life does not work like this. One idea to entertain is placing a proxy, similar to squid between X and Y. All of X servers can connect to this proxy, but would result in a few persistent (http keepalive) connections to Y. If The few were say, 3 or 4, then it would funnel. If we could then rate limit those connections and traffic decides to spike unusually high, we wouldn't hurt anyone but ourselves. Thoughts?

• Sound card problem, no audio device detected

  I bought a new sound card because my built in sound card did not function. When I open YouTube, Media Player or anything that can create a sound my computer will hang up and sometimes when I start my computer it will hang when the Windows XP sound will activate. Update: My computer has no audio. It says NO AUDIO DEVICE. I already installed Realtek AC97 and Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and I also pasted stream.dll to the Windows and system32 folders and I restarted my computer but it still says NO AUDIO DEVICE.   Hi, I am trying to setup a load balanced web server scenario, using two HAproxy load balancers and two debian web servers following this guide http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-a-high-availability-load-balancer-with-haproxy-keepalived-on-debian-lenny. the setup is working but the results of simple performance benchmarking is not what I expected. I tried apache benchmark tool to send lots of requests to servers (one time directly testing one of the web servers and the other time testing through the load balancer) using the command "ab -n 1000000 -c 500 http://IP/index.html", but the test results shows better performance for the single server without load balancer. can any one tell me if I'm going wrong on some thing?

• How to make the jump from consumer support to enterprise support?

  I am currently a high level consumer break/fix technician responsible for about 300-400 repairs a month. I am good at my job, but bored, and I want to move into the enterprise side of my company, dealing with Server 2008 R2 and exchange and switches and routers that cost more than I make in a month. How do I make this transition? Whats the best thing to learn first? Is there a standard trajectory for making this leap from consumer to business? I am full time employed, so going back to school is not a great option, but I have no life, so spending my nights and weekends reading and practicing is totally within my realm. I am basically overwhelmed by the number of things to learn, and looking for any advice you may have on the best way to proceed. PS - I apologize if this is a not quite the right forum for this, I know its not a technical question exactly, but I also know the sorts of people I want to answer this question are reading this website.

  we are looking into building a commercial vod service and I'm doing research on the subject. We need the video to be protected with DRM so users cant rip/copy (i realise its mostly useless but the lawyers demand it from us) and the server solution to be scalable and able to distrubute content in hd to a high number of clients. Besides, we would need to be able to develop a player integrated with the payment system, so users that havent bought access would for example only see the first 30 seconds of video and then have the playback interrupted, or only be able to watch video for 72h after payment. Also it would be nice if we could distribute video to mobile platforms like android/wp8/ios but thats not a priority at the moment. I have zero experience on that topic so I would greatly appreciate any feedback or giving me stuff to read about like protocols or key phrases i should know. Thanks

• need advice for storing data setup hardware for client with 80TB per year of data footprint increase

  hi everyone, i currently have a client that will be adding replicated data from satellite locations in the number of approximately 80TB per year. with this said in year 2 we will have 160TB and so on year after year. i want to do some sort of raid 10 or raid 6 setup. i want to keep the servers to approximately 4u high and rack mounted. all suggestions welcome on a replication strategy. we will be wanting to have one instance of the data in house and the other to be co-located (any suggestions on co-locate sites too?). the obvious hardware will be something like a rack mount server with hot swap trays and dual xeon based type processors. the use of the data is for archives of information, files will be made up of small file sizes. i can add or expand to this question if it is too vague. thanks for looking.

• Areca 1880ix RAID hangs

  Areca RAID controller ARC-1880ix-12 (firmware 1.50) hangs when on high load. My setup is: Chenbro 3U chassis Intel S5500BC mainboard Xeon 5603 CPU 16GB of RAM 12 Seagate SAS drives ST32000645SS (2 of them as hot spare, 10 as RAID10) Mellanox Infiniband HBA card This server is working as external infiniband storage for Xen VMs. When load is quite big Areca's firmware hangs - it becomes unreachable even from Areca's ethernet adapter. After resetting the server power it returns to normal operation. While Areca is hanged I can confirm that it is powered (ethernet link is active) and Infiniband HBA works Ok. Thanks in advance for any idea or suggestion where the problem might be!

• Optimal Disk Setup for OLTP SQL Server

  We have a high transaction (lots of reads and writes) database server (running SQL 2005) that is currently set up with a RAID 1 OS partition (C:) and a RAID 5 data/log/tempdb partition (D:). The C: has 2 drives and the D: has 4 drives. The server has around 300 databases ranging from 10MB to 2GB in size. I have been reading up on best practices for partioning the disks, but would like some opinions on our setup since we are so limited in the number of disks. It seems like RAID 10 is popular, but I dont think we could use it with only 6 total disks to work with. Thanks. • Does a bad Internet connection increase bandwidth usage?

  My (Rogers) cable connection has been pretty bad recently (channels 3 and 10 are particularly fuzzy—it’s analog, not digital cable). Not surprisingly, this has caused my cable modem to drop out and have to reestablish a connection a couple of times since it started. The poor connection of course means higher corruption (not necessarily dropped per se) which causes the TCP/IP stack to have to retransmit packets more often. Reduction of bandwidth throughput aside, I got to wondering if it increases the actual bandwidth usage. That is, if there is a high error rate on the line causing packets to have to be retransmitted: Does this increase a bandwidth monitoring program’s numbers? Does the ISP count the retransmitted packets toward the monthly cap? Based on what I remember from my university networking courses and common sense, I have a feeling that the answer to both questions is yes, but I cannot reliably measure the first, and have no authoritative answer for the second. I’m wondering if maybe the retransmitted packets are acknowledged as being duplicates and thus not counted somewhere along the line.

• Optimal way to make MySQL backups for fairly large databases (MyISAM / InnoDB)

  Currently we have one beefy MySQL database that runs a couple of high traffic Django based websites as well as some e-commerce websites of decent size. As a result we have a fair amount of large databases using both InnoDB and MyISAM tables. Unfortunately we've recently hit a wall due to the amount of traffic so I've setup another master server to help alleviate reads / backups. Now at the moment I simply use mysqldump with a few arguments and it's proven to be fine.. until now. Obviously mysqldump is a slow quick method however I believe we've outgrown its use. I now need a good alternative and have been looking into utilizing Maatkits mk-parallel-dump utility or an LVM snapshot solution. Succinct short version: I have a fairly large MySQL databases I need to backup Current method using mysqldump is inefficient and slow (causing issues) Looking into something such as mk-parallel-dump or LVM snapshots Any recommendations or ideas would be appreciated - since I have to re-do how we're doing things I rather have it done properly / most efficient :).

• HP ML150 G6 upgrading RAM/CPU beyond specs?

  I am being told that some limits on some HP servers can be crossed. Do any of you have any experience with that? A ML150/G6 is limited to 48GB RAM but I have been talking to a German company that guaranties me that this server will be able to be upgraded to 384GB RAM (using 32GB memory modules and 2 CPUs) http://www.compuram.de/en/memory,HP+%28-Compaq%29,Server,Proliant,ML150+G6.htm Can this really be true? The server that I have is using E5504 CPUs but will I be able to upgrade to any CPU that is using a LGA1366 socket? • Is SCCM overkill for medium-sized organizations?

  I am an IT technician in a high school with around 1600 students 250 staff and 800+ client computers mostly running Windows 7. Our team is composed of three members. My boss seems content with a network that works (just about) not necessarily a productive well maintained network that is easy to run and maintain. I'm still fairly early on in my I.T. career so I'm not up to speed on all the different endpoint management solutions that are available. I'm looking for a better way to manage clients (deploy software, track changes, inventory etc) I like the look of SCCM 2012's features but the case studies seem to be aimed at large multi-site infrastructural rather than a single mid sized site. Is SCCM suitable for a mid sized single site or is it aimed at much larger corporations? How can I determine whether or not an endpoint management solution like SCCM is a good fit for our organization?   I have an application deployed on WebLogic 10.3, which exhibits a strange behavior. I am running a constant (not too high) load on my application (20 concurrent users, running a light activity). The response time is reasonable (well below 100ms after the application stabilizes) Memory consumption seems fine (My application creates a lot of short-living objects, but they are garbaged collected so the overall memory consumption stays under 500 mb). Threads stats seem healthy as well: And yet, after I leave my test running for a while, more and more execute threads ("[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '3' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'") are created, until eventually the application crashes: This test hasn't been running for a long time (All the new threads that you don't see in the first screenshot were created while I was writing this question), and I've seen much more threads being created. Any idea why these threads are being created?

• Streamline Active Directory account creation via automated web site

  In my company we have high employee turnover, and hence our helpdesk receives about a dozen requests per week for new Active Directory accounts. Currently, we receive these requests simply via e-mail or voice-mail, and rarely do we have all of the information necessary to create the account. I would like to find a web application that can be used by a manager or supervisor to formalize the requests they make for AD accounts for new employees under their command. Ideally, the application would prompt for all of necessary information, and allow the helpdesk to review the requests and approve or deny each one. If approved, the application would take care of creating the account and send an e-mail to the manager. I have found several application on the Internet that handle self-service account management (i.e., password resets or update contact info), which is also nice to have, but nothing that streamlines the new account request and creation part. Can anyone make suggestions on such an application? Thanks.

It will be running a few VMWare Worksation virtual machines - A dev machine running VS-2010, a build machine, a version-control machine, a web server for testing, a "personal" machine running office etc. I'll be connecting the computer to my stereo, so I'll also be running iTunes (possible on a dedicated VM) and I want the computer to be a silent one. I'll probably use an Antec P183 case. I was advised on Serverfault to use Raid10 for performance. Raid 10 uses 4 disks. So, my question is as follows: In terms of heat, noise, reliability, warranty, price, capacity and performance, what would you suggest: A Raid10 4 disk array using eco-friendly disks such as the $94 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green, or one high performance disk such as the 2TB Western Digital Caviar Black at $280?

I have a server in Cali, Colombia, and other server will be installed in Melbourne, Australia, user in America can use the Cali Server and in Europe, Asia, Africa or Oceania use the Melbourne Server. If any server fail (or load is excessively high), a server must answer all request. Data in MYSQL must be in sync, php files, any configuration in both server must be in sync. I read about of Google DNS Server 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and ANY Cast, also about MySQL semisynchronous replication and MySQL Cluster, but what about other things, as crontabs, and the configurations in server? The solution can't depend of APNIC or BGP, only open source software running in Linux.

• Motherboard warning lights when plugging in a display port cord to graphics card?

  Earlier today, my computer spontaneously shut itself off and refused to turn back on. I tested my PSU and it's operating fine. I unplugged everything and let it sit for a while and it started to make a high pitched coil whine/hiss. When I came back an hour later and plugged in only the power cord, it turned on without any issues. After some troubleshooting, I noticed my motherboard (Intel D975XBX2) has a red CPU led and VR led that come on whenever I plug my monitor into my graphics card via display port. DVI does not cause a similar issue. I was running three monitors off the card, so I need both DVI ports and the display port working. Is it likely my graphics card needs to be replaced, or should I be looking elsewhere to resolve this issue?

  The title of the question is confusing, and does not explain my point well. I've always used Ubuntu server from version 10.04 and never had problem, now I have 4 machines with ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS installed on them and I found that under any circumstances where there is a high burden throws me a problem and machine crashes constantly. the most common is CPU#X stuck for Ns! Now I wonder if the administration of Debian is equal to that of ubuntu, regarding Servicos, packages, folders structure for example I would like to know if the services are installed in the same manner using invoke-rc.d, which handles additional security, including for not giving blind caning. I've been looking for a comparison chart but have not found anything yet, something between Debian 6.0.6 and Ubuntu 12.04 also the most common "hiccups" when you install the system

• How can I run a job when the server load is low?

  I have a command that runs a disk snapshot (on EC2, freezing an XFS disk and running an EBS snapshot command), which is set to run on a regular schedule as a cron job. Ideally I would like to be able to have the command delayed for a period of time if the disk is being used heavily at the moment the task is scheduled to run. I'm afraid that using nice/ionice might not have the proper effect, as I would like the script to run with high priority while it is running (i.e. wait for a good time, then finish fast). Thanks.
