• OpenDNS servers initial response is very slow

  I've got a Time Warner cable ISP package (RoadRunner), and the modem they gave me doesn't allow me to specify which DNS servers to use; it always uses whatever the upstream dhcp server gives it. I prefer to use OpenDNS on my home network, so i've configured a couple of my PCs manually in the Windows adapter settings for IPv4 such that their IP addresses are obtained via DHCP, but the DNS server settings are fixed to the OpenDNS server IPs. Now, when I startup Windows on these PCs, it always takes 2-3 minutes to start receiving responses from the DNS servers; any request before that times out. While not debilitating, this is quite annoying. Any ideas why this might be happening?

  i came across a apache httpd 2.2 configuration recently in which multiple ServerRoot-directives were defined, each followed by individual prefork Settings. Sort of like this: ServerRoot root1 <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 5 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 10 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> [vhost-configs] ServerRoot root2 <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 10 MinSpareServers 10 MaxSpareServers 20 MaxClients 250 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> [vhost-configs] In my understanding these are global settings one overriding the other. But is that true and is it still true with the second ServerRoot directive between the prefork blocks? Thank you in advance EDIT They are not in different conditional blocks and both server roots are used in that way that files with relative paths to both are correctly included. I just wondered if a <ServerRoot> would initiate a new scope in which all global statements would not override the configuration of previous ones.

• Is it possible to run two separate instances (copies, versions) of Audacity?

  What I want is two separate instances of Audacity running in parallel as to separate programs with different settings. I want one to use WASAPI as audio host and speakers as input device (the 2.0.5 portable has the WASAPI option), and the other to use the MME as audio host, and microphone as input device. When opening a new (second) window of the same installation/copy of Audacity, by executing twice the .exe file, it is the same as giving the command 'new' under 'File', what happens is not a second instance, but just a separate project/file and window. When settings are changed in one, they change exactly in the other. When trying to start a second copy of Audacity, or even a second different version, when one is already running, it will also open just a second project/file of the application that is already running, as before.

• site timing out when under heavy load

  My client sends out eblasts at 8am monday/wed/friday. Between 8:15-8:45 the site becomes extremely slow and many users sessions timeout. My setup: Mediatemple VE 2gb dedicated ram (3 burst) Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2-mpm-worker PHP5.3-fcgi MySQL 5 I recently tried to remedy the problem by switching from apache2-mpm-prefork to mpm-worker, but am still having the same issues. My apache settings are: Timeout 100 KeepAlive On MaxKeepAliveRequests 100 <IfModule mpm_worker_module> StartServers 12 MinSpareThreads 25 MaxSpareThreads 96 ThreadLimit 96 ThreadsPerChild 25 MaxClients 225 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> The site is only getting ~10,000 page views during the 8am-9am hour, which I dont think should be stressing the server too badly. Maybe it is an error with the PHP settings, or bandwidth per unit time, or the site outgrew the server? Any suggestions would be very helpful - as you can see i've given it a good go before looking for help (installed mpm-worker). Also, can anyone suggest to me some free load testing software, or a tutorial on mod_status? Thank you

  Hi I hope someone can help me... I accidentally renamed my own user name on my mac running OS X 10.4.11 and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc etc) is it possible to copy my settings from my original into this new user name? When I open my computer it defaults to this new account but everything is setting up from new and I just need to get access to all my work documents, mail settings etc. If there is anyone who could help out, I would be very grateful.   Why would the boot screen be displayed on the external monitor? This is not really a problem, I'd just like to know the reason behind this. If I boot without an external monitor both the BIOS settings and the boot screen are displayed on the built-in LCD monitor. However, when I boot with a monitor attached, the boot screen and the BIOS settings are displayed on the external monitor. There isn't any setting available regarding this in the BIOS setup (as opposed to my Thinkpad T42 where there is an option regarding this). • How to force a resolution in linux?

  I have a HP LP3065 that requires a dual link dvi cable to go up to 2560x1600 resolution. However, I do not have that cable, but I want to use 1920x1200 resolution. However, my nVidia Display Settings (also system display settings) will only go up to 1280x1024, which looks horribly pixelated on the 30". How do I force the 1920x1200 resolution? I tried adding the mode into my xorg.conf file, but it still would not take it. I know my vid card can do 1920x1200 since it works on the 24" monitor with the same dvi cable. • Windows 8 - IE 10 Metro - How to print or save a webpage

  I'm running Windows 8 Pro. My default browser is Internet Explorer 10 (and hence opens as a Modern Windows 8 app). I want to know how to print or save a webpage. There are no related settings available in the browser. The only option is to select "View on Desktop" and the browser interface familiar to IE 9 opens up on the desktop, through which I could access the above said options and additional settings. I know the Desktop is not going away anytime soon and that its still an important part of Windows. But if Microsoft is pitching for the Modern Windows UI, why would they leave out important options such as print & save from it and force a user to access the "old" Desktop mode for the same? Even Windows 8 RT supports plug-and-play access to Printers & Peripherals. So not being able to Print from a tablet or access the File System is definitely not an answer.

• Server 2008 Web Edition IIS6 SMTP conflict

  I'm using IIS6 Manager to setup the SMTP service on Windows Server 2008 Web Edition. There seems to be a conflict (port 25?) which means that I cannot start and stop the Default SMTP server within IIS6. I can start and stop it with the services.msc snap in and this is reflected in state of the SMTP server in IIS6 manager. I'm worried that none of the settings I want to get at within IIS6 (logging, authentication etc..) are having any effect. None of these settings are available within IIS7 in Web Edition.

• Why my widows 8 pc always powered on by moving mouse?

  I recently installed windows 8 RTM, but found a very annoying thing. My PC always powered on automatically even in midnight. Eventually I noticed that I can power on the PC by pressing keyboard or mouse, and even moving mouse. After searched this in google, I turned off Sleep and Hibernate in Power Options - System Settings - Shutdown settings, but it still did not work. Would anyone please help me? I don't want to suffer from the noise of PC powering on in midnight any more. Thank a lot.

• CentOS 6.5 proxy bypass/no_proxy not working

  I am running CentOS 6.5 on my desktop. I've set the Network Proxy using the network proxy application provided under Preferences. I've also set the following exceptions: localhost,127.0.0.0/8,172.16.0.0/12,192.168.0.0./16 But whenever I am using wget (I'm testing the proxy settings using using wget) then wget tries to connect to the proxy for private addresses, but wget localhost works fine and doesn't use the proxy. I also removed all the proxy settings and set the proxy in the shell: export http_proxy="<proxy_url>:<port>" export https_proxy="<proxy_url>:<port>" export no_proxy="localhost,127.0.0.0/8,172.16.0.0/12,192.168.0.0./16" It work when I use the command wget <external_url> or wget localhost but fails when I use the command wget <private address from the $no_proxy variable>. I also tried setting the variables in Ubuntu 14.04 also and facing the same issue. Regards,

When i connect to a machine, the client user should not have mouse and keyboard access of the Remote machine. It should be a View only remote connection.   I've installed Microsoft's Virtual PC on Windows 7, but when I try to start a virtual machine I get the following error message: '<Virtual machine name' could not be started because hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled. Please enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS settings and try again. If hardware virtualization settings is already enabled, you may have to disable Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) setting in BIOS or update the system BIOS. However, if I download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool, it gives the following positive message: This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization. This computer meets the processor requirements to run Windows Virtual PC. If this computer runs a supported edition of Windows® 7, you can install Windows Virtual PC. I've also used the MSR Walker in the third-party utility CrystalCPUID to examine MSR 0x3a on both processors on my system, and it's 0x5 (0x4 = VT enabled, 0x1 = VT lock), as expected. Does anyone have any ideas of what else to check? Thanks.

• Safari MAC proxy bypass for IPv6

  I'm a first-time n00b on Mac ; (but have been doing computers since before PC's). This Mac has 2 VLANs, vlan0 in IPv4, vlan1 in IPv6. Safari can surf via IPv4 squid proxy OK. Safari can surf via IPv6 natively, if I switch off the proxy, OK. How do I set up the Settings - Network - Interface - Advanced - Proxies to "bypass" IPv6 ? Current Settings include variations along the lines of ... "*.local, 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12 , ::, ipv6 " but don't work as expected. I want Safari to go out on its own with IPv6, not crash at the proxy with "malformed URL" Thanks, //rhi

  Hello, I'm puzzled by this email message that gets quarantined by McAfee Secure Messaging Service (it's based on Postini) for no reason that I can think of. • Implications of allowing Windows clients to use NTLMv1?

  I have a web application that I'd like to authenticate to using pass-through NTLM for SSO. There is a problem, however, in that NTLMv2 apparently will not work in this scenario (without the application storing an identical password hash). I enabled NTLMv1 on one client machine (Vista) using its local group policy: Computer-Windows Settings-Security Settings-Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level. I changed it to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated. This worked, and I'm able to login to the web application using NTLM. Now this application would be used by all of my client machines... so I'm wondering what the security risks are if I was push this policy out to all of them (not to the domain controller itself though)?

  I have migrated my sitecollection(migsitecollection) to different farm using content deployment job. http://vsmoss/sites/migsitecollection I used collaboration portal to create it.Its working fine from where I migrated it but after running content deployment jobs my new migrated site global navigation settings are not getting saved when I am trying ot change them by going in settings-Navigation and in logs I can see this error The SPNavigation store is likely corrupt. I saw on net the solution for this problem is changing onet.xml and running script on sql database for the site, I am eager to better answer than this but if its the same I have few doubts on it: First,As my site template is not customised its the collobartion portal so I am not sure where exactly to change the onet.xml. Second, I am using the same database as of my webapplication running that script would not affect anything else on the main site of mine?

• Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. (never used it anyway) GPO link GPO Security Filterings

  I have a HP DL180 G6 with a P410 raid controller. Presently this runs using 4x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint SATA drives, in a RAID10 configuration using default settings. I am about to add a backplane to increase the drive capacity from 4 to 12 drives, and I plan to install 4 more 1TB SATA Drives. The drives are matched and have close serial numbers (They arrived together in the Manufacturers pallet). Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s I will also be installing RHEL 6.1 x86_64. My question is what would be the optimal RAID settings (stripe etc.) for this configuration? To recap: 8x Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s RAID 10 configuration. Thanks in advance. • DNS server at router level vs. computer level

  I've three questions. Is it better/faster/optimal to set up your server's preferred and alternate DNS servers in your OS's network settings or in your router settings? Will it cause problems if it is set up in both places, both pointing to the same IPs? I am running Windows and I have my network assign a static IP to one of my computers. This doesn't allow me to obtain the DNS server addresses from my router automatically. Is there an IP I can put in that will cause it to take the DNS server addresses from the router?

• Child Folder inheriting a permission that parent folder does not have (NTFS)

  I'm reconfiguring roaming profiles on my network to use proper NTFS security settings according to this article. I have reset the following permissions on the roaming profile parent folder: CREATOR OWNER, Full Control, Subfolder and files only User group with profiles, List folder, Create folders, This folder only System, Full Control, This folder, subfolders, and files Then I select one of the actual roaming profile folders and follow these steps to fix the NTFS settings: Click Security, Advanced Uncheck "Allow inheritable permissions..." Choose "Remove..." Recheck "Allow inheritable permissions..." Click "Apply" After I choose apply, I get the following permissions listed on the roaming profile folder: Administrators (MYDOMAIN\Administrators) Full Control, This folder only CREATOR OWNER, Full Control, Subfolders and files only System, Full Control, This folder, subfolders, and files Where is the Administrators entry coming from!? There is an entry on the root of the drive for Administrators to have full control, but the Roaming Profile Parent folder is not set to inherit any permissions, and it does not have the administrators permission.

• Show Windows 8 Start Menu on the primary monitor

  I'm having the issue where the Windows 8 Start Menu shows up on the secondary monitor instead of the primary. When booting the machine the start menu appears originally on the primary screen as it should. Sometime during the course of the day the menu starts appearing on the secondary monitor instead of the primary. What should happen/initial settings: Primary Monitor - Win8 Metro Interface Second Monitor -Blank Starts happening after a few hours Primary Monitor - Blank Second Monitor -Win8 Metro Interface My Settings: Display 1: Resolution: 1920x1080 Multiple Displays: Extend these displays This is currently your main display Display 2: Resolution: 1440x900 Multiple Displays: Extend these displays []Make this my main display

• Mouse for a lefty?

  As a programmer, I'm fairly particular about my keyboard and mouse. One thing I've only recently noticed is that the mice I tend to prefer don't work well for my five-year-old. He's left-handed, but ends up mousing with his right hand on the computer because (a) that's where the mouse is, and (b) most mice are designed for right-handed people anyway. So, a couple of questions: If you're left-handed and you mouse with your left hand, do you have any recommendations on good mice? If you have a lefty in your household (whether or not it's you), is there an easy way to swap settings between left-handed and right-handed mouse buttons? One way is Control Panel Mouse Check the box on the first tab OK. Do you know of anything faster? Or, better yet, what I'd really like is a way to reverse those settings on only one particular mouse, which would be designated as my son's mouse.

• Can't the NetworkManager applet to appear in the Gnome panel in Ubuntu

  I have researched this problem extensively and I can't seem to find an answer. In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I want to connect to my VPN through the NetworkManager applet. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. To override, specify: '--config file' # during NM startup. This can be done by appending to DAEMON_OPTS in # the file: # # /etc/default/NetworkManager # [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile [ifupdown] #managed=false managed=true At this point, it looks like NetworkManager is running but it's not appearing in the NotificationArea of the panel. I don't know what else to try. Any ideas?
