• Live Meeting error: malformed email address... or IS IT???

- by PeterBrunone
During a remote SharePoint training session this morning, Live Meeting presented one of our instructors with the following gem: "An attendee email address is malformed". This was particularly troubling since a wizard took care of adding all the entries, and they looked correct (even after being sifted through my character analysis tool). As it turns out, the addresses were indeed correct. As sometimes happens, though, at the line breaks, it looked like there was no space between the semicolon and the following email address. Since I'm a member in good standing of the "I wonder what this button does" school of thought, I added an extra space after each of these cramped little semicolons -- and the invitation executed flawlessly.Coincidence? Maybe... but you can bet I'm going to keep trying dumb stuff like that when the error message doesn't make sense. Think of it as the tech support equivalent of "Ask a silly question..."

- by Jayant Sharma
Hi all, In SharePoint 2010, This is rare error, I got when I deploy and activate Feature using VS2010. Deployment works file but in activation process it get stuct and throws error. Error occurred in deployment step 'Activate Features': The field with Id {GUID} defined in feature {GUID} was found in the current site collection or in a subsite. When I googled I found very good solution from Sandeep Snahta Blog. http://snahta.blogspot.hk/2011/10/error-in-activate-features-from-visual.html As suggested in this blog, there is two option to overcome this error; Close VS2010 and restart again. Or Kill VSSHost4 Process either through Task Manager or Via Power Shell Command stop-process -processname vssphost4 -force Jayant Sharma

• Philly GiveCamp 2010

- by wulfers
Spent the weekend helping out several non-profits doing what we like to do best... Designing, developing and making people very happy with their new websites, systems, applications and features. Form what I saw at this GiveCamp about 75 percent of the non-profits needed updated or new websites supporting CMS features and the ability for staff members to update the content on their websites.... Some cool apps were designed and developed..... A centralized system for distribution of daily schedules and task assistance to autistic clients was a show stopper with an awesome central management interface, IPhone and in the future windows phone support for tactile, auditory and visual cues. SharePoint was upgraded and forms were automated for a volunteer fire company that desperately needed some automation to help the fireman do their primary job. Many cool sites for non-profits that had ether an outdated or non existent web presence.

• Support / Maintenance documentation for development team

- by benwebdev
Hi, I'm working in the Development dept (around 40 developers) for a large E-Commerce company. We've grown quickly but have not evolved very well in the field of documenting our work. We work with an Agile / Scrum-like methodology with our development and testing but documentation seems to be neglected. We need to be able to make documentation that would aid a developer who hasnt worked on our project before or was new to the company. We also have to create more high level information for our support department to explain any extra config settings and fixes of known issues that may arise, if any. Currently we put this in a badly put together wiki, based on an old Sharepoint / TFS site. Can anyone suggest some ideal links or advice on improving the documentation standard? What works in other companies? Has anyone got avice on developing documentation as part of an agile process? Many thanks, ben

• 2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

- by MOSSLover
So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post. What kind of title should I put? Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message. I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne. It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat. I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up waking up around 11:15 to that text message buzz. I guess my DE, Rachel Appel, had texted me “Happy New Years”, because Rachel is that kind of person. I immediately proceeded to check my email. I noticed my live account had a hit. The account I rarely ever use had an email. I sort of had that sinking suspicion I was going to get Silverlight MVP right? So I open the email and something out of the blue happens it says “blah blah blah SharePoint Server MVP blah blah…”. I’m sitting here a little confused what? Really? Just about when you give up on something the unexplained happens. I am grateful for what I have every day. So let me tell you a story. I was a senior in high school and it was December 31st, 1999. A couple days prior my grandmother was complaining she had a cold and her assisted living facility was not going to let her see a doctor. She claimed to be very sick. New Year’s Eve Day 1999 my grandmother was rushed to the hospital sometime very early in the morning. My uncle, my little brother, and myself were sitting in the waiting room eagerly awaiting news. The Sydney Opera House was playing in the background as New Years 2000 for Australia was ringing in. They come out and they tell us my grandmother has pneumonia. She is in the ICU in critical condition. Eventually time passes in the day and my parents take my brother and I home. So in the car we had a huge fight that ended in the worst new years of my life. The next 30 days were the worst 30 days of my life. I went to the hospital every single day to do my homework and watch my grandmother. Each day was a challenge mentally and physically as my grandmother berated me in her demented state. On the 30th day my grandmother ended up in critical condition in the ICU maxed out on painkillers. At approximately 3 am I hear my parents telling me they don’t want to wake me up and that my grandmother had passed away. I must have cried more collectively that day than any other day in my life. Every New Years Even since I have cried thinking about who she was and what she represented. She was human looking back she wasn’t anything great, but she was one of the positive lights in my life. Her and my dad and my other grandmother constantly tried to make me feel great when my mother was telling me the opposite. I’d like to think since 2000 the past 11 years have been the best 11 years of my life. I got out of a bad situation by using the tools that I had in front of me. Good grades and getting into a college so I could aspire to be the person that I wanted to be. I had some great people along the way to help me out. So getting to the point I like to help people further there lives somehow in the best way I can possibly help out. This New Years was one of the great years that helped me forget the past and focus on the present. It makes me realize how far I’ve come since high school and even since college. The one thing I’ve been grappling with over the years is how do you feel good about making money while helping others out. I’d to think I try really hard to give back to my community. I could not have done what I did without other people’s help. I sent out an email prior to even announcing I got the award today. I can’t say I did everything on my own. It’s not possible. I had the help of others every step of the way. I’m not sure if this makes sense but the award can’t just be mine. This award is really owned by each and everyone who helped me get here. From my dad to my grandmother to Rachel Appel to Bob Hunt to Jason Gallicchio to Cathy Dew to Mark Rackley to Johnny Ennion to Lee Brandt to Jeff Julian to John Alexander to Lori Gowin and to many others. Thank you guys for all the help and support. • TFS vs. Star Team comparison

- by ryanabr
I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. While that is great, that means that other tools will be needed to provide the features that are already bundled with TFS like, SharePoint integration, as well as Analysis Services and Reporting Services to provide visibility on the web with reports on project health, and team velocity. Below is a quick table that I was able to throw together to answer some high level questions: Feature TFS Star Team Work Items X X Work Item custom Queries X X Customizable Work Items X Web Portal View X X Reporting X Integration Version Control X X Build Management X Integration Integrated Test Suite X Integration Cost Free for first 5 / MSDN Sub covers others $7500 / seat

• Strategies for Indexing Custom Fields in RavenDB

- by Adrian Thompson Phillips
In the relational database world, if I was developing a CRM system and wanted to have the user add their own custom fields that are searchable, I could have tables that store the name of the new column, the data type and the value, etc. (which would be less inefficient to index) or I could use the less elegant (but more searchable) solution that software like Dynamics and SharePoint use, whereas I create a load of columns on my aggregate root called CustomInt1, CustomInt2, etc. (which looks dirty and has a limit of how many custom fields a user can have, but has indexing advantages). But my questions is this, in NoSQL databases, what would be the best way of achieving the same thing? My priority would be for searchability. So what would be the best way to store this data? If I used a predefined set of properties (i.e. CustomData1, CustomData2, etc.), because these are all stored as JSON (i.e. strings) in the database, does this make it simpler because I don't have to worry about data types?

• Who could ask for more with LESS CSS? (Part 3 of 3–Clrizr)

- by ToString(theory);
Welcome back! In the first two posts in this series, I covered some of the awesome features in CSS precompilers such as SASS and LESS, as well as how to get an initial project setup up and running in ASP.Net MVC 4. In this post, I will cover an actual advanced example of using LESS in a project, and show some of the great productivity features we gain from its usage. Introduction In the first post, I mentioned two subjects that I will be using in this example – constants, and color functions. I’ve always enjoyed using online color scheme utilities such as Adobe Kuler or Color Scheme Designer to come up with a scheme based off of one primary color. Using these tools, and requesting a complementary scheme you can get a couple of shades of your primary color, and a couple of shades of a complementary/accent color to display. Because there is no way in regular css to do color operations or store variables, there was no way to accomplish something like defining a primary color, and have a site theme cascade off of that. However with tools such as LESS, that impossibility becomes a reality! So, if you haven’t guessed it by now, this post is on the creation of a plugin/module/less file to drop into your project, plugin one color, and have your primary theme cascade from it. I only went through the trouble of creating a module for getting Complementary colors. However, it wouldn’t be too much trouble to go through other options such as Triad or Monochromatic to get a module that you could use off of that. Step 1 – Analysis I decided to mimic Adobe Kuler’s Complementary theme algorithm as I liked its simplicity and aesthetics. Color Scheme Designer is great, but I do believe it can give you too many color options, which can lead to chaos and overload. The first thing I had to check was if the complementary values for the color schemes were actually hues rotated by 180 degrees at all times – they aren’t. Apparently Adobe applies some variance to the complementary colors to get colors that are actually more aesthetically appealing to users. So, I opened up Excel and began to plot complementary hues based on rotation in increments of 10: Long story short, I completed the same calculations for Hue, Saturation, and Lightness. For Hue, I only had to record the Complementary hue values, however for saturation and lightness, I had to record the values for ALL of the shades. Since the functions were too complicated to put into LESS since they aren’t constant/linear, but rather interval functions, I instead opted to extrapolate the HSL values using the trendline function for each major interval, onto intervals of spacing 1. For example, using the hue extraction, I got the following values: Interval Function 0-60 60-140 140-270 270-360 Saturation and Lightness were much worse, but in the end, I finally had functions for all of the intervals, and then went the route of just grabbing each shades value in intervals of 1. Step 2 – Mapping I declared variable names for each of these sections as something that shouldn’t ever conflict with a variable someone would define in their own file. After I had each of the values, I extracted the values and put them into files of their own for hue variables, saturation variables, and lightness variables… Example: /*HUE CONVERSIONS*/@clrizr-hue-source-0deg: 133.43;@clrizr-hue-source-1deg: 135.601;@clrizr-hue-source-2deg: 137.772;@clrizr-hue-source-3deg: 139.943;@clrizr-hue-source-4deg: 142.114;.../*SATURATION CONVERSIONS*/@clrizr-saturation-s2SV0px: 0;@clrizr-saturation-s2SV1px: 0;@clrizr-saturation-s2SV2px: 0;@clrizr-saturation-s2SV3px: 0;@clrizr-saturation-s2SV4px: 0;.../*LIGHTNESS CONVERSIONS*/@clrizr-lightness-s2LV0px: 30;@clrizr-lightness-s2LV1px: 31;@clrizr-lightness-s2LV2px: 32;@clrizr-lightness-s2LV3px: 33;@clrizr-lightness-s2LV4px: 34;... In the end, I have 973 lines of mapping/conversion from source HSL to shade HSL for two extra primary shades, and two complementary shades. The last bit of the work was the file to compose each of the shades from these mappings. Step 3 – Clrizr Mapper The final step was the hardest to overcome as I was still trying to understand LESS to its fullest extent. Imports As mentioned previously, I had separated the HSL mappings into different files, so the first necessary step is to import those for use into the Clrizr plugin: @import url("hue.less");@import url("saturation.less");@import url("lightness.less"); Extract Component Values For Each Shade Next, I extracted the necessary information for each shade HSL before shade composition: @clrizr-input-saturation: 1px+floor(saturation(@clrizr-input))-1;@clrizr-input-lightness: 1px+floor(lightness(@clrizr-input))-1; @clrizr-complementary-hue: formatstring("clrizr-hue-source-{0}", ceil(hue(@clrizr-input))); @clrizr-primary-2-saturation: formatstring("clrizr-saturation-s2SV{0}",@clrizr-input-saturation);@clrizr-primary-1-saturation: formatstring("clrizr-saturation-s1SV{0}",@clrizr-input-saturation);@clrizr-complementary-1-saturation: formatstring("clrizr-saturation-c1SV{0}",@clrizr-input-saturation); @clrizr-primary-2-lightness: formatstring("clrizr-lightness-s2LV{0}",@clrizr-input-lightness);@clrizr-primary-1-lightness: formatstring("clrizr-lightness-s1LV{0}",@clrizr-input-lightness);@clrizr-complementary-1-lightness: formatstring("clrizr-lightness-c1LV{0}",@clrizr-input-lightness); Here, you can see a couple of odd things… On the first line, I am using operations to add units to the saturation and lightness. This is due to some limitations in the operations that would give me saturation or lightness in %, which can’t be in a variable name. So, I use first add 1px to it, which casts the result of the following functions as px instead of %, and then at the end, I remove that pixel. You can also see here the formatstring method which is exactly what it sounds like – something like String.Format(string str, params object[] obj). Get Primary & Complementary Shades Now that I have components for each of the different shades, I can now compose them into each of their pieces. For this, I use the @@ operator which will look for a variable with the name specified in a string, and then call that variable: @clrizr-primary-2: hsl(hue(@clrizr-input), @@clrizr-primary-2-saturation, @@clrizr-primary-2-lightness);@clrizr-primary-1: hsl(hue(@clrizr-input), @@clrizr-primary-1-saturation, @@clrizr-primary-1-lightness);@clrizr-primary: @clrizr-input;@clrizr-complementary-1: hsl(@@clrizr-complementary-hue, @@clrizr-complementary-1-saturation, @@clrizr-complementary-1-lightness);@clrizr-complementary-2: hsl(@@clrizr-complementary-hue, saturation(@clrizr-input), lightness(@clrizr-input)); That’s is it, for the most part. These variables now hold the theme for the one input color – @clrizr-input. However, I have one last addition… Perceptive Luminance Well, after I got the colors, I decided I wanted to also get the best font color that would go on top of it. Black or white depending on light or dark color. Now I couldn’t just go with checking the lightness, as that is half the story. You see, the human eye doesn’t see ALL colors equally well but rather has more cells for interpreting green light compared to blue or red. So, using the ratio, we can calculate the perceptive luminance of each of the shades, and get the font color that best matches it! @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps2: round(1 - ( (0.299 * red(@clrizr-primary-2) ) + ( 0.587 * green(@clrizr-primary-2) ) + (0.114 * blue(@clrizr-primary-2)))/255)*255;@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps1: round(1 - ( (0.299 * red(@clrizr-primary-1) ) + ( 0.587 * green(@clrizr-primary-1) ) + (0.114 * blue(@clrizr-primary-1)))/255)*255;@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps: round(1 - ( (0.299 * red(@clrizr-primary) ) + ( 0.587 * green(@clrizr-primary) ) + (0.114 * blue(@clrizr-primary)))/255)*255;@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc1: round(1 - ( (0.299 * red(@clrizr-complementary-1)) + ( 0.587 * green(@clrizr-complementary-1)) + (0.114 * blue(@clrizr-complementary-1)))/255)*255;@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc2: round(1 - ( (0.299 * red(@clrizr-complementary-2)) + ( 0.587 * green(@clrizr-complementary-2)) + (0.114 * blue(@clrizr-complementary-2)))/255)*255; @clrizr-col-font-on-primary-2: rgb(@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps2, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps2, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps2);@clrizr-col-font-on-primary-1: rgb(@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps1, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps1, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps1);@clrizr-col-font-on-primary: rgb(@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-ps);@clrizr-col-font-on-complementary-1: rgb(@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc1, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc1, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc1);@clrizr-col-font-on-complementary-2: rgb(@clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc2, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc2, @clrizr-perceptive-luminance-pc2); Conclusion That’s it! I have posted a project on clrizr.codePlex.com for this, and included a testing page for you to test out how it works. Feel free to use it in your own project, and if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to leave them here as a comment, or on the contact page!

I am tring to buy a new laptop since the one that I have is an old one. From my point of view, Microsoft Development tools are becomming more and more resource-consuming (I don't find a suitable reason for it though). So I thought I would go for a Lenovo U260 i-7. I do not know exactly if it is going to meet my requirement so that is why I wanted to ask specifically Microsoft Developers about the specification of CPU, RAM, and Storage Disk. Thanks in advance

This is for instance important where you have per-device licensing restrictions. For Win8 store apps, You can use ASHWID (Application Specific Hardware Identifier). ASHWID will be different app to app and device to device. Any hardware changes to the device will cause the unique id to change. You can also detect minor change vs. major change to build custom level of tolerance in what is considered a change. For instance, ejecting a USB stick is a minor change. SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information I’m filing this under the absurdity of stupid design. Or perhaps, we didn’t really use it ourselves before releasing it. I’m talking about OneNote the metro app. Beautiful app, beautiful concept, until of course, you feel like deleting the default notebook it creates for you. Why would anyone want to delete that of course! Hell everyone would want to! It’s the first damned thing you’d do. How do you delete a section? There is a button at the bottom. How do you delete a page? Well just like section, there is a button at the bottom. So you wish to delete a notebook? There is no button at the bottom. That’d be no fun of course! Here is how, Read full article ....

• Upgrading from Express Edition to Standard Edition

- by TiborKaraszi
Say you encounter an SQL Server which is Express Edition, and it really should have been some higher edition. Sounds familiar? It is common for me as a consultant to find plenty of SQL Servers at a customer's site. Many of the databases in these will be moved (typically using backup and restore) to a "real" SQL Server. But in some cases, this might not be desirable. You want to convert the whole instance, from Express to a "real" SQL Server edition. I'm attending a great SharePoint course for Daniel...(read more)

• Houston We have a Problem with Silverlight Client OM…

- by MOSSLover
So I was playing around with NavigationNodeCollection, which is basically like SPNavigationNodeCollection just to make sure it worked without a hitch…Here is a little sample snippet of what should work: Unfortunately, you get a nice little javascript error that does not allow you to access the child nodes. I tried a foreach() loop that gets a NavigationNode for each parent then loops through the NavigationNode.Children that did not work either. I threw in two ExecuteQueryAsync statements thinking that would help, unfortunately adding a second statement provides no different results. This appears to be a bug in the Silverlight Client Object Model. I reported the error. Hopefully, we get a fix by RTM so that we can use the easier method to get items into Silverlight, otherwise it’s back to WCF and cross domain policies. We all love cross domain policies right? • Slide decks of Windows Phone 7 talk @ MoMo

- by subodhnpushpak
Hi, I presented a talk on Windows Phone 7 @ MoMo and got awesome response, even though WP7 is quite new still. I also demoed 2 applications on both emulator and the actual device. It enjoy the look on audience faces when they see the app actually work on actual device. I see a great opportunity on WP7 and everyone I met agrees on the fact the WP7 has a very bright future ahead. The Ecosystem which WP7 has (developing/ debugging tools, emulator, almost flat learning curve, office/sharepoint integration a lively forum, marketplace) makes it a major player in mobile, already. Here is the slide – deck. Here are the details of the event. http://momodelhi11.eventbrite.com/#m_1_100 And here are few snap shots of the event.
