• Server-to-Switch Trunking in Procurve switch, what does this mean?

  I am looking to set up switch redundancy in a new datacenter environment. IEEE 802.3ad seems to be the go-to concept on this, at least when paired with a technology that gets around the "single switch" limitation for the link aggregation. Looking through the brochure for a procurve switch I see: Server-to-Switch Distributed Trunking, which allows a server to connect to two switches with one logical trunk; increases resiliency and enables load sharing in virtualized data centers http://www.procurve.com/docs/products/brochures/5400_3500%20Product%20Brochure4AA0-4236ENW.pdf I am trying to figure out how this relates to the 802.3a standard, as it seems that it would give me what I want (one server has 2 nics, each of which is connected to separate switches, together forming a single logical nic which would provide the happy redundancy we want), but I guess I am looking for someone familiar with this concept and could add to it.

• Is there a VNC server for mac with decent international keyboard support?

  Hi, I'm having trouble finding a VNC server for Mac OS X that allows me to connect from a Windows box with German keyboard layout. I've tried the built-in desktop sharing and several versions of Vine but all of them had problems with several keys. Does maybe anyone know about a working combination of a Mac OS X VNC server and Windows VNC client which properly supports a German keyboard layout on the client? Update: I don't think the Windows client is the problem, because I have no issues connecting to Linux boxes. And I've tried several different clients.

• Problem restoring from tar backup: why are there /dev/disk/by-id/ symlinks and how can I avoid them?

  Hello, I'm trying to make a bare-bone backup system with the most basic tools available on openSUSE 11.3 (in this case: bash, fdisk, tar & grub legacy) Here's the workflow for my scripts: backup.sh: (Run from external system, e.g. LiveCD) make an fdisk script ($fscript) from fdisk -l's output [works] mount the partitions from the system's fstab [works] tar the crucial stuff in file.tgz [works] restore.sh: (Run from external system, e.g. LiveCD) run fdisk $dest < $fscript to restore partitioning [works] format and mount partitions from system's fstab [fails] extract from file.tgz [works when mounting manually] restore grub [fails] I have recently noticed that openSUSE (though I'm sure it has nothing to do with the distro) has different output in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, more precisely the partition name is for example "/dev/disk/by-id/numbers-brandname-morenumbers-part2" instead of "/dev/sda2" -- but it basically is a simple symlink. My questions about this: what is the point of such symlinks, especially if we're restoring on a different disk? is there a way to cleanly prevent the creation of those symlinks and use the "true" /dev/sdx everywhere instead? if the previous is no, do you know a way to replace those symlinks on the fly in a text file?   As a Software Engineer we had a lot of discussion on SE design. Although we sync every document on the development process on Google Doc, mind map just didn’t fit in Google doc yet. The best we can do is to store a copy and share it online. To me, Mind map is an ir-replaceable piece of tools (yet) as agile note taking tools. • unable to access shared drives n win7

  OK, this is doing my head in. Not your usual Win7 sharing problem. Just built a win 7 comp to go onto my home lan and be accessed by all on the network, mostly running XP SP3. Installed it as a single HD+DVD system, got it happy, then added my storage drives, set them up in the right order and letters, rebooted, and shared them. Couldn't access the computer at all from any XP machine. Set the pasword thingy in win7 to NO, and now I can "see" all four shared drives from any machine, but can access only two of them. Please tell me whats going on as I've done nothing different from one drive to the other, just installed and set up drive letters as normal, then shared the damn things. The odd thing about it? the two 1.5T drives that have a lot of data on board are accessable, the two nearly empty 500G ones are not. ANY ideas? Cheers, Colin

• Xen private networking between multiple hosts

  I have two physical hosts running Xen 3.2, sharing storage via iSCSI. On these two hosts are a number of domUs and I'd like to network them in multiple private networks so they can only contact other domUs on their private network. My understanding of the xen documentation suggests it's possible to do this within one dom0 (ie create virtual networks between domUs), but I've found nothing explaining how this can be implemented across multiple dom0s on different hosts. The only thing that jumps to mind is manually creating iptable rules to route data to the other host, but this seems to lack elegance and could quickly grow cumbersome. Any suggestions? All advice is much appreciated!

• "This computer has dynamically assigned IP addresses" error when installing Active Directory Domain Controller

  This is a working Windows Server 2008 that I should install Active Directory on it. I found http://www.howtogeek.com/99323/ and followed the steps. After Additional Domain Controller Options, I'm asked the question "This computer has dynamically assigned IP addresses". As I see, the message states that Dynamic IP addressing has been used for the server, while this is wrong. When I come to Network And Sharing Center, and click on Local Area Connections - Properties - Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) - Properties, I see that the main IP address (as well as DNS Server) and also all other IP addresses are assigned statically. So it should be OK. I cannot believe any server using dynamic IP(s)! Note: No IPv6 has been set for the server. Please tell me why the error is given and which of the options available, should I choose? Note that it's a production server and is working with many users in WORKGROUP. No change should be affected nor to the IPs, neither to users connecting to the server.

• Remote Mac OS X server using Windows 7 with VNC

  I've search most of the topic around here in @SuperUser and around most of the webs they can easily access Windows uing Mac OS X but I have a question can I access my Mac using Windows? I've activate my screen sharing on my Mac OS X and I can use another Macbook to access it no problem but once I use TightVNC or UltraVNC and any VNC base program non of them really worked for me. So is there any alternative to VNC to give me option to access my Mac using VNC or something like that? Thanks.

• Tracking down the cause of a web service fault running in IIS

  I have built a web service in Visual Studio 2008, and deployed it on IIS 7 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. It has been extensively tested, handles all errors gracefully and logs any uncaught errors to a file using log4net. The system normally runs perfectly, but occasionally (2 or 3 times a day) a fault occurs and screws up the application which needs an iisreset to get it working again. When the fault occurs I get some random errors that are caught by my catch-all error log, such as: Value cannot be null. Could not convert from type 'System.Boolean' to type 'System.DateTime'. Sequence contains no elements These errors are raised on every request until I manually do an iisreset, but there is no sight of them when the system is running normally. The web service is a stateless request-response application. Nothing is stored in the session. It could be load related, but I doubt it as there are only around 30 or 40 requests per minute. This is proving very tricky to track down. I can't work out what is putting IIS into this bad state, and why it needs an iisreset to get it working again. Nothing is reported in the event log. Can anyone suggest how to enable more extensive logging that might catch this fault? Also, does anyone know what might be causing the problem?

• Apache Serving 403 Forbidden after OS X Snow Leopard Upgrade to Version 10.6.6

  I've just upgraded my MacBook Pro to OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.6 and now Apache is misbehaving: requests to http://localhost/ generate a 403 Forbidden response -- FIXED requests to any of my virtual hosts seem to generate a 200 Ok response, but contain zero bytes Some further info that might be useful: I'm using the Apache that comes bundled with OS X. I'm using PHP from http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/ (which is in /usr/local/bin) I've had look at the Apache error log and the only error seems to be the following: [notice] child pid 744 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I'm completely stumped by this. Any help would be much appreciated. • Windows 8 Doesn't Shutdown Properly With Fast Start-Up Enabled

  While Fast start-up is enabled, on turning the computer off (shutdown) the computer idles for about 5min after logging out/screen turning off. It then turns off. On returning into Windows I receive the error message saying Windows didn't shut down properly. Hibernate works fine, and I am told this shouldn't be the case - If one doesn't work, neither should. It works when both Fast start-up is enabled and disabled, as does restart and sleep. Windows is installed under UEFI. The UEFI ultra fast boot option for my motherboard cannot be enabled as my GPU doesn't support some UEFI GOP tech. As far as I know, not related to windows fast start-up, but thought it was worth mentioning. EDIT: Some more information on the matter: Formatting didn't fix the issue. Still fails regardless of drivers installed. Hardware was purchased ~6months ago. Running a good SSD. Event viewer Always these two messages in close succession: Error (event ID 6008): The previous system shutdown at 7:45:21 PM on ?27/?10/?2012 was unexpected. Critical (kernel power, event ID 41): The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Upon installing WPT as suggested below to figure out what was happening during shutdown, and running the cmd xbootmgr -trace shutdown -noPrepReboot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP Windows fast start-up is now working consistently. Still works upon uninstalling WPT. This is the only change to occur on the computer. Nothing else has bee installed/uninstalled, no Windows Updates, nothing. Windows fast start-up did not work prior to installing WPT and running the cmd (made sure I tested).

• Block p2p downloading in my office?

  I work in an education office in a third world country. We pay for internet by the megabyte (no other choice) and have lately been using an incredible amount of bandwidth. This is because the office staff have found out about p2p sharing. As far as I know, Limewire is the only program they're using, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before they discover the more general world of bittorrent. Using only a linksys router (that I could flash), is there any way for me prevent the office from destroying our bandwidth cap by downloading personal items (against policy). Even semi-fixes would be better than nothing.

  I've a citrix server where multiple users use a multiple java application. Is there a way to reduce the memory footprint of the jvm itself? The max heap is already set fairly low (64MB), as the permgen (32MB) space and we're to the point that the jvm itself uses way more memory than the application itself (the committed area is around 350MB) I'm looking for a way to reduce the jvm ram usage or to make the all the applications run within the same jvm or any other way of sharing common pages between running jvm (if possible) or try switch to switch to a jvm if a jvm exists having optimizations relative to this scenario currently using windows 2003 server and sun java virtual machine 1.6

  I'm running a small wireless network (6 to 10 users) on a Linksys WRT54G with Tomato firmware sharing an Internet connection. I don't want the users to download files with BitTorrent (mainly used) and other P2P apps. I've also found some solutions about lowering P2P traffic priority using QoS. I really need to ban P2P traffic. Does anyone know how to setup some rules to deny that kind of traffic? I've tried to setup an Access Restriction Rule: However it's not working at all.

• Does MySQL log successful or attempted queries?

  I'm trying to track down a hit-or-miss bug in a web application. Sometimes a request completes just fine; sometimes it hangs and never finishes. I see that Apache now has several requests listed on the server-status page as "sending reply," and that doesn't change. I'm testing on localhost, so there shouldn't ever be more than one. Out of curiosity, I set MySQL to log all queries and I'm tail -fing the log file. When things go OK, I see a pattern like this: 20 Connect root@localhost on dbname 20 Query (some query #1) 20 Query (some query #2) (etc) 20 Quit 21 Connect (etc) When it hangs, I see a pattern like this: 22 Connect root@localhost on dbname 22 Query (some query #1) //nothing happens, so I try the post again 23 Connect root@localhost on dbname 23 Query (some query #1) //nothing happens; try again 24 Connect (etc) Here's my question: is MySQL logging attempted queries, or successful queries? In other words, if the last line I see is query #1, does that imply that query #1 or query #2 is hanging? My guess is that the one I don't see is the problem, because the last one I see looks fine, but maybe the one I don't see is too screwed-up for MySQL to process. Thoughts?

• Apache22 on FreeBSD - Starts, does not respond to requests

  Hey folks! I'm running Apache 2.2.17 with the peruser MPM on FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 on Amazon's EC2 (so it's XEN). It was installed from ports. My problem is that, although Apache is running, listening for, and accepting connections, it doesn't actually respond to any or show them in the log at all. If I telnet to the port it's listening on and type out an HTTP request: GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: asdfasdf And hit enter a couple of times, it just sits there... Nothing. No response requesting with a browser either. There doesn't appear to be anything helpful in the error log: [Sun Jan 09 16:56:24 2011] [warn] Init: Session Cache is not configured [hint: SSLSessionCache] [Sun Jan 09 16:56:25 2011] [notice] Digest: generating secret for digest authentication ... I also tried uninstalling apache22-peruser-mpm and just installing straight apache22... Still no luck. I tried removing all of the LoadModule lines from httpd.conf and just re-enabled the ones that were necessary to parse the config. Ended up with only the following loaded: root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# /usr/local/sbin/apachectl -M Loaded Modules: core_module (static) mpm_peruser_module (static) http_module (static) so_module (static) authz_host_module (shared) log_config_module (shared) alias_module (shared) Syntax OK root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# Same results. Apache is definitely what's listening on port 80: root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# sockstat -4 | grep httpd root httpd 43789 3 tcp4 6 *:80 *:* root httpd 43789 4 tcp4 *:* *:* root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# And I know it's not a firewall issue as there is nothing running locally, and connecting from the local box to 127.0.0.1:80 results in the same issue.   I have a 32-bit Java installed just for Chrome and 64-bit Java JDK for everything else. When I type java -version in the cmd, the 32-bit Java answers: C:\>java -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing) This is the 32-bit JRE installed for Chrome (the installer name was chromeinstall.exe). However, I'd like the default Java to be this one: C:\>"Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) And for the fun part, only the 64-bit one is in PATH! C:\>echo %PATH% C:\Windows\system32;C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin (snipped irrelevant entries) So long story short: 64-bit JRE is in PATH, but 32-bit JRE is ran by default. What is happening here? How to fix it? Tried reinstalling the 64-bit JDK as a whole, didn't help.

• What could cause random files being downloaded without permission?

  I have been having issues lately with a certain directory. It seems someone is placing files into it, or something of that sort, and any attempt to delete them is successful, HOWEVER they reappear over time (maybe not the exact same ones, but random files). I will provide you the information I can and several pictures of my problem: sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b1.jpg Files like this have been appearing in my /visual/ folder, and I have no clue where they are coming from. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b2.jpg This is what is inside on of those weird files, it appears to be nothing problematic. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b4.jpg As you can see, in the time it took me to take the first picture, more odd files showed up. These log files are also being uploaded to this directory, and I know I didn't put them there. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b7.jpg This inside one of these mysterious .log files, I'm not sure what it's all about. These files only appear to be going into this specific area, and I'm not sure of their origin, only that they will not go away. I have done a full system scan at least twice with an up-to-date virus scan, and have looked for an unknown script which may be writing them there. Nothing has come up, so I come to you guys as I hear this is the best place to find answers. Hope this problem has a solution!

• Apache error "child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25)"

  Morning all, Apache on our internal development server stopped working last night. It's running, but all we get is a blank screen, no server errors. Examing the error log shows the following, [Fri Apr 23 09:13:57 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) [Fri Apr 23 09:14:03 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) [Fri Apr 23 09:14:03 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) [Fri Apr 23 09:14:06 2010] [notice] child pid XXXX exit signal exceeded file size limit (25) After some Googling, we found that this is due to Apache trying to handle a file greater than it's maximum allowed limit, which by default is 2GB and is usually an error log. I did a search using find . -size +1000000k -ls (find all files greater than 1GB) in our log and web folders, but nothing showed up. I've also restarted Apache and rebooted the server itself serveral times. I've completely wiped the log folder and started a fresh. Nothing is working. Any ideas as to what else might be causing this? Thank you

• What would cause previously sent emails to be sent again from Exchange the first time someone logs i

  A few users testing our Citrix XenApp service found that several (seemingly random) previously sent emails were sent out immediately after they logged into Outlook via Citrix for the first time. The problem hasn't occurred for them since. After one user had this happen, and we scratched our heads about it thinking it was a fluke, our IT director had this same issue. I guess I'd rule out any PEBKAC issues. I really don't know where to begin troubleshooting this problem. If you have any ideas what could have caused this, I'd appreciate you sharing them, as strange or far-fetched as they may seem :)

• Traffic shaping & monthly traffic limit in Tomato?

  Is there a way to do a monthly traffic limit in Tomato, DDWRT or OpenWRT in addition to the regular QoS? This is for a house with several students sharing the internet. I.e. for a specific IP address, IP Range or MAC address, the firmware will count the download traffic for that month. When a configurable limit is set, it'll either limit it to say 64kbit/s up/down or drop all traffic and maybe redirect web traffic to an internal web server telling them that they have exceeded their quota. How can this be done with those firmwares?

• DFS-R + VSS - Run VSS at all locations or one?

  I have 4 servers, one at each office location, each sharing read/write copies of 1.5TB of data. Changes are replicated 24/7 between all 4 servers via DFS-R. All servers run Windows 2008 R2. I'm interested in implementing VSS (Volume Shadow Services) on this data. I've read that DFS-R and VSS play nicely together, but I'm left with one unanswered question: turn on VSS at all locations or just one (the headquarters). Can I run VSS at all 4 locations safely, or is it wiser to run it at just 1 location? Thanks!

• Do all the network cards use the same frequency to send signals to wire?

  I am comparing my cable TV wire to my network wire. In a TV cable wire, different frequencies are used by different TV channels. And since a certain channel use a fixed frequency, I think the only left way to represent different signal is with the carrier wave's amplitude. But what about the network wire? For all the network cards with the same type, do they also use different frequencies to send signals just like TV cable? I vaguely remember that they use frequency adjustment to represent signals. So the frequency should not be a fixed one. So how did all the network cards that sharing the same medium differentiate their own signal from others?
