• 1 document pending in printer queue in System Tray that won't go away

  Edit: I didn't want to do it, but I restarted my computer - cleared the problem right away. Though if I were running a Windows 2003/2008 server, I would hate to have to restart the domain controller just to get rid of this irritating problem. If I run into this problem again, I'm going to try that remove printer/reinstall printer thing. Thanks for your help @Psychogeek. Points for your attempt. Running Windows 7, 32-bit Professional. My printer is an HP OfficeJet Wireless 8500. It's connected to my network wirelessly through TCP/IP as a standalone device. I was having some print problems awhile back and had to do some print spooler stuff as part of my troubleshooting (stopping the Print Spooler service, clearing the print spooler files from C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and then restarting the service). I've finally narrowed it down to it being application specific, so that's that. However, as a leftover from all that troubleshooting, my printer icon is stuck in the tray - when I mouseover the icon, Windows says that there is 1 document(s) pending for my username. However, when I open up that printer's queue, there's nothing in there. I restarted the Printer Spooler service and also checked C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS if there's anything in there - nothing. I did a quick Google search and an answer from one of those "reps" at the Microsoft Socialnet site says for me to uninstall and reinstall the printer. The funny thing is, when I send print jobs, they print just fine - that 1 mystery document stuck in queue isn't stopping anything from happening. Short of having to do that, are there any other quick troubleshooting steps I may be missing?

• Embedding a WMV file on the web via URL in a Powerpoint presentation

  I've got a situation where I want to distribute a Powerpoint presentation to several people. I want to be able to embed several large videos in this presentation by linking to a URL, for the following specific reasons: the videos are highly confidential, and I would like to be able to delete them at some later date, but still allow them to see it in the presentation while it is online. I want to send the presentation via email (so it should be small), and put the links on a server with a faster upload speed Maybe I'd like to change the video at some point without changing the presentation One option that addresses #1 is to hook up a webcam and allow them to see video stream from the office, but our upload rate is too slow for this to be a viable option. I've tried embedding a video and giving Powerpoint the URL. It seems to work initially, because the first frame appears in my slideshow. However, when I play the slideshow, nothing happens. I looked at the network traffic on my computer, and nothing was getting downloaded from the remote server. Any suggestions on how to make this work, or how to at least satisfy the criteria listed above would be great!

• Ubuntu with Netatalk and Samba TimeMachine can't connect

  I installed netatalk on my Ubuntu Server a few weeks ago and configured it so that I could use Timemachine from my mac to backup on a server instead of a external hard drive. It worked really good until yesterday when I installed Samba to be able to share certain folders on my server to my mac. Now I receive an error msg: There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem. From what I understand is that the problem is on the server and not on my mac. I have tried to restart the computer and without adding any of the folders Samba is sharing adding the timemachine "afp://...@...". Is there a problem running them both at the same time, do I need to configure samba so that it doesn't reject afp? I'm pretty new at this...

• Setting Up Apache as a Forward Proxy with Cahcing

  I am trying to set up Apache as a forward proxy with caching, but it does not seem to be working correctly. Getting Apache working as a forward proxy was no problem, but no matter what I do it is not caching anything, to disk or memory. I already checked to make sure nothing is conflicting in the mods_enabled directory with mod_cache (ended up commenting it all out) and also I tried moving all of the caching related fields to the configuration file for mod_cache. In addition I set up logging for caching requests, but nothing is being written to those logs.   Has anyone had experience plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together or something similar? Here is the motivation: Disk space on multiple server regrouped using GlusterFS Centralized access using LDAP/AD and quota management using Openfiler as the GlusterFS client SMB/CIFS server for easy sharing to multiple users on Mac and Windows I know I can have Gluster installed on Openfiler (rPath Linux) successfully but Openfiler seems to be very picky on what it can use as a shared drive. Mounting the Gluster volume inside an existing share does not seem to allow quotas with the mounted folder free space. If this is not possible, is there any alternative to give the same capabilities?

• Should I consolidate multiple identical VMs into BSD jails?

  We run a number of Openfire XMPP/Jabber servers. Due to the way Openfire works, we cannot easily run multiple Openfire instances on one server, so I have 5 identical VMware ESXi VMs, each with CentOS, MySQl, Java, and Openfire. They're the exact same, except for their IP addresses, the actual Openfire MySQL database and it's config file. I am wondering if this is the optimal configuration, or if it would be better to move these VMs to a single FreeBSD machine and put each one inside a FreeBSD jail. Specifically, I am wondering if the benefit of VMWare's Transparent Page Sharing (TPS) would outweight the cost of running 5 identical OSes. Would I end up using less memory with one large FreeBSD machine and java running in bsd jails?

• When running PowerShell script as a scheduled task some Exchange 2010 database properties are null

  Hello, I've written a script that intends to retrieve the DatabaseSize of a database from Exchange 2010. I created a new AD user for this script to run under as a scheduled task. I gave this user admin rights to the Exchange Organization (as a last resort during my testing) and local admin rights on the Exchange machine. When I run this script manually by starting powershell (with runas /noprofile /user:domain\user powershell) everything works fine. All the database properties are available. When I run the script as a scheduled task a lot of the properties are null including the one I want: DatabaseSize. I've also tried running the script as the domain admin account with the same results. There must be something different in the two contexts but I can't figure out what it is. • Ubuntu 12.04 froze during update, won't boot

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop, and every time i tried to update it, it would freeze for a few seconds, and tell me that the updates could not be downloaded. After many, many tries I managed to get them downloaded, but then in the middle of installing them, it froze. Completely. No mouse movement, no blinking lights, no nothing. After a few hours of letting it sit there, I finally hit the power button to do a hard reset, and now when I select Ubuntu on the boot screen (Dual-boot with Windows 7), I get a blank purple screen, and then nothing. Another freeze. I've tried getting into the console, but no command I input has any visible effect. I have a ton of music stored on the partition it's in, so I'd really rather not have to reinstall. My specs, to the best of my knowledge: Clevo Corp model B7130 (Sager custom) CPU: Intel Core i5 @ 2.53gHz (4 CPUs) Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 425m 4096 MB RAM Drivers: Whatever comes with the download of 12.04. As a side-note, I installed Ubuntu via the Windows Installer program (wubi). Does that make a difference?

• Obey server_name in Nginx

  I want nginx/0.7.6 (on debian, i.e. with config files in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/) to serve a site on exactly one subdomain (indicated by the Host header) and nothing on all others. But it staunchly ignores my server_name settings?! In sites-enabled/sub.domain: server { listen 80; server_name sub.domain; location / { … } } Adding a sites-enabled/00-default with server { listen 80; return 444; } Does nothing (I guess it just matches requests with no Host?) server { listen 80; server_name *.domain; return 444; } Does prevent Host: domain requests from giving results for Host: sub.domain, but still treats Host: arbitrary as Host: sub-domain. The, to my eyes, obvious solution isn't accepted: server { listen 80; server_name *; return 444; } Neither is server { listen 80 default_server; return 444; } Since order seems to be important: renaming 00-default to zz-default, which, if sorted, places it last, doesn't change anything. But debian's main config just includes *, so I guess they could be included in some arbitrary file-system defined order? This returns no content when Host: is not sub.domain as expected, but still returns the content when Host is completely missing. I thought the first block should handle exactly that case!? Just for example: Configuring web site environment for professors and friends Configuring a Linux box that does the routing, firewall (iptables), backup and file sharing (samba) for my apartment Developing small websites for things as simple as party invites to polling friends. Running my own SMTP server with domain keys, SPF and DNSBL Etc., etc. What would be the appropriate section to mention this? Should I even mention it? Perhaps it's best to just bring it up during the interview. I would especially appreciate the opinion of hiring managers.

• wmware fusion 5.0.1, LAN, disconnecting from server [closed]

  Currently I am using : OSX 10.7.5 VMWare:5.0.1 with windows 7 professional Problem: Getting disconnected from LAN game. Description: 4 of us are trying to play frozen throne on the same network. The thing is, they are all running windows computers, and I am running W7 on VMware. I haven't made any adjustments other than changing from "sharing internet with my mac" to Bridged network "autodetect". When we start to play, everything works then all of a sudden I get disconnected. This happens every once in a while, the timing differs from time to time. None of the others ever disconnects. What could be the problem? Thanks for the help!

• How do I create a VBA macro that will copy data from an entry sheet, into a summary sheet by date

  I'm trying to create a macro that will copy data from a data entry sheet into a summary sheet. The entry sheet is going to be cleared daily so I can't use a formula just to reference it. I want the user to be able to enter a date, run a macro, and have the macro copy the data from the entry sheet into the cells for the corresponding date on the summary sheet. I've looked around and found bits and pieces of how to do this but I can't put it all together. Update: Thanks to the information below I was able to find some additional data. I have a pretty crude macro that works if the user manually selects the correct cell. Now I just need to figure out how to automatically select the current cell relative to the current date. • Windows 7 Machine Makes Router Drop -All- Wireless Connections [closed]

  Note: I accidentally originally posted this question over at SuperUser, and I still think the issue is caused by some low-level networking practice of Windows 7, but I think the expertise here would be more apt to figuring it out. Apologies for the cross-post. Some background: My home network consists of my Desktop, a two-month old Windows 7 (x64) machine which is online most frequently (N-spec), as well as three other Windows XP laptops (all G) that only connect every now and then (one for work, one for Netflix, and the other for infrequent regular laptop uses). I used to have a Belkin F5D8236-4 wireless router, and everything worked great. A week ago, however, I found out that the Belkin absolutely in no way would establish a VPN connection, something that has become important for work. So I bought a Netgear WNR3500v2/U/L. The wireless was acting a little sketchy at first for just the Windows 7 machine, but I thought it had something to do with 802.11N and I was in a hurry so I just fished up an ethernet cable and disabled the computer's wireless. It has now become apparent, though, that whenever the Windows 7 machine is connected to the router, all wireless connections become unstable. I was using my work laptop for a solid six hours today with no trouble, having multiple SSH connections open over VPN and streaming internet radio in the background. Then, within two minutes of turning on this Windows 7 box, I had lost all connectivity over the wireless. And I was two feet away from the router. The same sort of thing happens on all of the other laptops -- Netflix can be playing stuff all weekend, but if I come up here and do things on this (W7) computer, the streaming will be dead within ten minutes. So here are my basic observations: If the Windows 7 machine is off, then all connections will have a Signal Strength of Very Good or Excellent and a Speed of 48-54 Mbps for an indefinite amount of time. Shortly after the Windows 7 machine is turned on, all wireless connections will experience a consistent decline in Speed down to 1.0 Mbps, eventually losing their connection entirely. These machines will continue to maintain 70% signal strength, as observed by themselves and router. Once dropped, a wireless connection will have difficulty reconnecting. And, if a connection manages to become established, it will quickly drop off again. The Windows 7 machine itself will continue to function just fine if it's using a wired connection, although it will experience these same issues over the wireless. All of the drivers and firmwares are up to date, and this happened both with the stock Netgear firmware as well as the (current) DD-WRT. What I've tried: Making sure each computer is being assigned a distinct IP. (They are.) Disabling UPnP and Stateful Packet Inspection on the router. Disabling Network Sharing, SSDP Discovery, TCP/IP NetBios Helper and Computer Browser services on the Windows 7 machine. Disabling QoS Packet Scheduler, IPv6, and Link Layer Topology Discovery options on my ethernet controller (leaving only Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing, and IPv4 enabled). What I think: It seems awfully similar to the problems discussed in detail at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/wsk/thread/1064e397-9d9b-4ae2-bc8e-c8798e591915 (which was both the most relevant and concrete information I could dig up on the internet). I still think that something the Windows 7 IP stack (or just Operating System itself) is doing is giving the router fits. However, I could be wrong, because I have two key differences. One is that most instances of this problem are reported as the entire router dying or restarting, and mine still works just fine over the wired connection. The other is that it's a new router, tested with both the factory firmware and the (I assume) well-maintained DD-WRT project. Even if Windows 7 is still secretly sending IPv6 packets or the TCP Window Scaling implementation that I hear Vista caused some trouble with (even though I've tried my best to disable anything fancy), this router should support those functions. I don't want to get a new or a replacement router unless someone can convince me that this is a defective unit. But the problem seems too specific and predictable by my instincts to be a hardware hiccup. And I don't want to deal with the inevitable problems that always seem to take half a day to resolve when getting a new router, since I'm frantically working (including tomorrow) to complete a project by next week's deadline. Plus, I think in the worst case scenario, I could keep this router connected directly to the modem, disable its wireless entirely, and connect the old Belkin to it directly. That should allow me to still use VPN (although I'll have to plug my work laptop directly into that router), and then maintain wireless connections for all of the other computers. But that feels so wrong to me. Anyone have any ideas what the cause and possible solution could be? Clarifications: The Windows 7 machine is directly connected via an ethernet cable to the router for everything above. But while it is online, all other computers' wireless connections become unusable. It is not an issue of signal strength or interference -- no other devices within scanning range are using Channel 1, and the problem will affect computers that are literally feet away from the router with 95% signal strength.

• Windows shared printers: Process job on server machine, not the client

  Hi. While working with Linux clients to Windows SMB/CIFS filesharing servers, from time to time I find myself having to print to a printer with no drivers available under Linux. For some reason, the Windows computer expects the job to be sent in an already processed format, so it can be fed directly to the printer in its own, weird language. It would be great if I could send the print job in Postscript or other standard format to the Windows computer sharing this printer, and then this PS could be processed under Windows. Is there a way to accomplish this? Because I don't seem to find the option. Thanks a lot.

• Run one virtual machine on a Linux server + standard Linux functions

  Hi, I am looking for a method to setup a Linux server (running Ubuntu Server) that uses Samba for file sharing, as well as hosting a Windows virtual machine (in this case, Windows Small Business Server 2003, which in turn hosts SQL Server Express - Exchange won't be used on this). I would like to have the Linux server serving the files over Samba, and hosting the Virtual Machine. This obviously rules ESXi out as it couldn't do Samba at the same time. What would be the next best solution to give reasonable speed? Vmware Server 2.0, VirtualBox, Xen? There will be 10-15 users accessing the Samba shares and the SQL Express virtual machine. Matt

• Cannot send email outside of network using Postfix

  I've set up an Ubuntu server with Request Tracker following this guide (the section about inbound mail would be relevant). However, while I'm able to send mail to other users within the network/domain, I cannot seem to reach beyond - such as my personal accounts etc. Now I have no idea what is causing this, I thought that all it takes is for the system to fetch mail through our exchange server and be able to deliver in the same way. However, that hasn't been the case. I have found another server setup in a similar fashion (CentOS 5, Request Tracker but using Sendmail), however it is a dated server and whoever's built it has kindly left no documentation on how it works, making it a pain to use that as a reference system! :) At one point, I was told I need to set up a relay between the local server's email add and our AD server but this didn't seem to work. Sorry, I know next to nothing about mailservers, my colleagues nothing about Linux so it's a hard one for me. Thank you! • NFS headaches with FreeBSD 4.9

  Once upon a time, this used to work, and I kept the configuration the same, but... now nothing. I'm just trying to get an NFS server set up on a FreeBSD 4.9 server. The process should be about as complicated as this: Add this entry to /etc/exports: /var/home /var/vpopmail/domains -maproot=root XXX.XX.XX.XXX Execute this: portmap nfsd -u -t -n 4 mountd -r Then this should work, regardless of network and firewall issues: showmount -e localhost But showmount -e localhost fails with the following error: RPC: Port mapper failure showmount: can't do exports rpc And even if I kill off the NFS daemon, and try a rpcinfo -p localhost, I get this error: rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: rpcinfo: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection reset by peer The portmapper is still running. Why the heck does nothing work as if it isn't? Edit to add: FYI: Sockstat gives me this: $ sockstat |egrep "(nfsd|portmap)" root nfsd 86310 3 udp4 *:2049 *:* root nfsd 86310 4 udp4 *:973 *:* root portmap 45920 0 tcp4 *:111 *:* Then, at a later time (say, 5 minutes) it's as if nfsd isn't acting as a server: $ sockstat |egrep "(nfsd|portmap)" root portmap 45920 0 tcp4 *:111 *:* But the nfs daemon is still running: $ ps ax |grep nfsd 86311 ?? • VPN Connects with local access only

  I have Windows Server 2008 and I have set up a VPN. When a user logs into their VPN they can not view the internet. It comes up as local access only on the the client PC. On the server when I go to the Network And Sharing Centre it displays (Network) with local and internet below it has the RAS Dial-in interface and it displays as local only there as well. I want all users that connect to my VPN to have internet access (full access). If anyone can help me it would be appreciated. Also I've activated dial-in properties and I've done it via policy who can access the VPN and internet. It still doesn't work, but there is a connection but just local only. Thanks

• How to share a USB modem?

  Usually I wouldn't have this problem if it was a dsl modem or cable modem but it's really been difficult for me to share this little modem to other computers. Right now I have my laptop connected to a hub, both computers are in the same workgroup and I have "share this computer internet to other computers"... etc. Problem is, I don't know what is currently happening... I'm hoping someone would guide me, I have googled and some people have been successful at sharing the connection but it seems I'm missing something =/ Let me know if you need any details, thanks

• Mac OS X: pushing all traffic through a VMWare VM [closed]

  I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions... • IIS Manager - Connect to Another Server (Win7 to Win2008 server)

  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. If I open up IIS Manager, I see a list of "connections" on the left hand side. In previous versions, I would be able to select an option to "connect to another server" or "connect to another machine", but there is no such option visible anywhere here. The only thing in the list is my local machine. Even in the address bar, if I manually type in the server location (\servername, even tried just servername), nothing happens (it just reverts back to my current local computer) The documentation at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732466%28WS.10%29.aspx seems to imply the very same steps... but there is just no button or menu option anywhere to do this. Am I missing something? I'm not even seeing a grayed out menu option. EDIT: Under the "File" menu, I see 2 options: Save Connections (grayed out) Exit Under the "Connections" pane, I see 1 button, grayed out. When I hover the mouse, it simply says "Up", appears to be usable if I browse into an element in my local computers IIS settings If I right click inside the pane itself, I see Refresh Add website (to the current host) Start Stop Rename Switch to Content View UPDATE: I downloaded and installed the Remote Server Administration tools from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7D2F6AD7-656B-4313-A005-4E344E43997D&displaylang=en, and I enabled everything listed under "Remote Server Administration Tools" under "Turn Windows Features On or Off". Still nothing.

• Mount shared folder (vbox) as another user

  I'm trying to mount my vbox shared folder every time my ubuntu starts. So, I added an entry on /etc/init with this: description "mount vboxsf Desktop" start on startup task exec mount -t vboxsf Desktop /var/www/shared Seems to work, except by the fact that all the files are owned by "root", and I don't have permission to write on the folder (neither chmod nor chown seems to be working). So, how can I make all the files under this shared folder to be owned by www-data user/group? Thanks ps.: The main reason for me to have an automatic shared folder, is so I can create/edit files from the HOST on the GUEST www folder. If you have a better idea for that, instead of sharing the folder, fell free to say.
