• No dual cpu support for VirtualBox with a CPU that doesn't support multicore?

  With VMWare it works fine and I can run multiple cores on a VMWare image. With Sun VirtualBox I can only run 1 cpu on a image. Its annoying. Why does Sun Virtualbox not work the same as VMWare in this respect?? • How does RAM fail?

  I have an issue with a Dell Inspiron 15 (1545) laptop that refuses to open any applications (save select Microsoft programs, e.g. Security Essentials, Ctrl Panel, Windows Explorer (not Internet), regedit, Event Viewer, etc.). I've run Microsoft Memory Diagnostics Tool and it found a 'hardware problem was detected.' Does this indicate that the RAM has failed? I notice when I open programs like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc., it always give me an error from WerFault.exe saying The instruction at xxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxxx. The memory could not be written. and sometimes something about illegal instructions. If it is a hardware problem, does this mean that replacing the RAM is my only option? Again, I would also like to know if RAM can fail (like hard drives) and if malware can cause RAM to fail also.

• How to keep Flash secured with EMET?

  I use EMET to secure a number of applications on my computer - web browsers, Office suite applications, PDF readers, as well as Adobe Flash. Overall it's working great, except that the Flash executables contain the version number in the file name, so every time there's an update, the file names change and I have to remember to re-add them manually to EMET. Is there a way to streamline this process? EMET does support wildcards, but only in the path itself, not the file name, so something like %windir%\system32\Macromed\Flash\*.exe wouldn't work. Is there any other way to add a whole folder to EMET so that any new executables in that folder are automatically secured?

• Robocopying DLLs and EXEs

  I've used Robocopy for several years now for backup purposes, and never looked back at any backup application I used in the past. I replicate whole valued directories to a removable HD, than from this HD to and equivalent system. Over time, quite a few DLL and EXE have accumulated in these directories, none of which Robocopy can seem to copy to my external HD. Thus, my 2 computers drift apart slowly... Is there anyway, using one of the eigthy-nine (89) switches (or one of the 2^89 - 1 = 6,1897002 × 10^26 combinations thereof) to force Robocopy to robotically copy EXEs, DLLs and other of my "access is denied" friends? Any idea of what the problem is? Do I need to add another parameter? An exception occurred during the Install phase. • XP Mode in Windows 7 professional recently ceased to work

  I have used Windows XP Mode in Windows Professional 7 once a week for around 2 years to run Quicken 98. About 2 weeks ago the XP Mode completely stopped working. I get different responses when I try to launch. I can sometimes see a launch screen for XP (which I never used to get) which then hangs Sometimes I just get a black screen Sometimes I get an error message in a cmd like interface that says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file. I have noticed that in the tools tab at the top of the screen "enable integration features" is greyed out. Any recommendations? Ian

• Norton Security Suite Symantec Download Manager Error: "Error writing to disk"

  My broadband provider (Comcast) decided to switch their 'included with service' security suite from McAfee to Norton Security Suite. Their email directed me to a site that downloaded the Symantec Download Manager (NortonDL.exe) and that went fine. I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and running this application pops up the standard User Account Control message and the software is correctly identified as coming from Symantec. I answer 'yes' to allow the software to install and upon launch immediately get an "Error writing to disk" error. I searched the Internet for this error, but mainly I find Comcast users complaining about the same issue with no resolution other than to call Symantec. I found no one suggesting a successful workaround and it appeared that most of the support calls took up to three hours. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Ideas? To be honest, I'm getting close to bagging this installation and just moving to Microsoft Security Essentials.

• Hyper-V Manager right clicking on remote VM causes MMC error

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server with SP1 that I log into and use to manage virtual machines running on multiple HyperV servers on our domain. Sometimes when I right click on a remote VM the HyperV Manager will crash and display the following error message: If I use the Actions menu on the lower right it works just fine, but for some reason right clicking cause MMC to stop working. • "broken" windows xp after disc replacement

  Windows xp pro OEM was installed on my machine, Disk was failing so I cloned it to a new disk (larger one). Now windows said that the hardware has changed significantly and I need to re-activate, and I would gladly do (got the product number on a sticker on the machine) - only that for running the activation process I need to be logged-in, but when I try to login it just automatically logs me out again :( I know my credentials are O.K. because I can connect to the machine remotely and also use sysinternals tools such as PsExec or PSList etc. on it from a remote machine by specifying user and pasword. Login via safemode does not work any differently then in normal mode... I tried to run rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk (as suggested in several places on the net) using PsExec but it did not seem to help... Is there any way out of this evil circle? [ can't log in because not activated - cant activate because not logged in ]

• Force Windows 7 to pin a file with no extension to the Jump List for Notepad

  I want to add the "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" file to the Jump List for notepad.exe on a Windows 7 machine, but since the file does not have an extension there is no default program associated with it. This means it never shows up in the recent list and you also cannot drag it to the task bar to manually pin it to the start list. I've had problems with jump lists before, and there are ways to use the Registry or File system to change how Jump Lists work, but I haven't seen anything to manually edit a jump list yet. Is there any way to force an item to be pinned to the jump list when that item does not have a program associated with it?

• vista winsxs folder eats disk space

  My machine has been running Vista Ultimate 64-Bit for about two years now. ServicePacks SP1 and SP2 are installed, too. The system partition has a size of 55 GB, which should be quite comfortable under normal circumstances, but about 40GB (no typo) are used by the Windows-Folder, especially the subfolder winsxs, which takes about 35 GB. I have already uninstalled as many programs as possible and did run compcln.exe, to reduce it, but this only gained 2-3 GB. What can I do to clean up without risking system stability? I'm a software developer and this is my daily work environment, which means - I can't risk to get strange side-effects from blindly deleting stuff. - You can maybe deduce some typical usage patterns from this information. Any suggestions?

• Can I use a display driver from Windows 8 in Windows 7?

  My latest display driver doesn't support WDDM 1.0, and I need it to be at least version 1.1. I've been attempting to get the Windows Phone 7 SDK working on my HP Pavillion dv9000, but the phone emulator requires 1.1 or higher. My drivers are as up-to-date as they can get. I even tried a modded driver found here, but no go. Then, while evaluating Windows 8 Developer Preview on a different partition I noticed that dxdiag.exe showed it was using WDDM 1.2. I tried installing Windows Phone 7 SDK on Windows 8, but I get an "Internal Error" popup and "Connection failed because of invalid command-line arguments" in the error window in Visual Studio. I'm guessing because Windows Phone 7 SDK isn't supported on Windows 8 yet. So my question is this: Can I get Windows 7 to use the display driver Windows 8 is using to get WDDM 1.2 on Windows 7 and how would I go about doing it?

• How can I use Windows Firewall to only permit the Windows Update service to make an outbound connection?

  I'm trying to tailor my Windows Firewall settings (using the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security console) to only permit programs that need to access the Internet with an outbound connection to do so. This works fine for normal applications as I can just allow the program, but services that load in the svchost.exe process are a problem. The only services I actually need to give access to are Windows Update and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (and even that, I would only like Windows Update to be able to submit jobs to, but that's another issue.) Is there a method to only allow these to be permitted an outbound connection, and not any of the other services loaded in svchost?

The normal "dling" when logging in was replaced by a more direct "DIING!". It was only like that in one beta version thought. I think (but I'm not sure because I never looked at output before) the PS script that I have worked before but after some problems with IIS7 installation it stopped working. • Reduce the I/O priority of Windows Backup (Windows Server 2008 R2)

  I have a PostgreSQL running on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box. And I have scheduled a backup everyday from the RAID 1 DB disk to a dedicated standalone disk. They are SAS 15k on Dell PERC 6i. I am using the built-in Windows Server Backup for purpose. The problem is, whenever the backup process is kicked in, the database performance is hogged. I would say almost a 10x of performance reduction. From the resource monitor, the disk queue is in the double digit range when backing up, and less than 1 during the day. The disk activity is like ~30-50MB/s during backup, so I guess the hardware is acting normally, though wbengine.exe takes up most of the portions. I think reduce the IO priority of the backup process would be an answer, but I couldn't find a way to. Tuning process CPU priority does not seems to help.

• Is it possible to run two separate instances (copies, versions) of Audacity?

  What I want is two separate instances of Audacity running in parallel as to separate programs with different settings. I want one to use WASAPI as audio host and speakers as input device (the 2.0.5 portable has the WASAPI option), and the other to use the MME as audio host, and microphone as input device. When opening a new (second) window of the same installation/copy of Audacity, by executing twice the .exe file, it is the same as giving the command 'new' under 'File', what happens is not a second instance, but just a separate project/file and window. When settings are changed in one, they change exactly in the other. When trying to start a second copy of Audacity, or even a second different version, when one is already running, it will also open just a second project/file of the application that is already running, as before.

• Why did windows change the elevation requirements of my AutoHotKey script, and how can I prevent such in the future?

  I was working on an AutoHotKey (AHK) script to create prefab mouse movements for a very simple model viewer. I worked on it for a good hour. I zipped the script, posted it to a forum, and thought "oh hey, I should add bla bla bla to the script". When I returned to the program, the AHK script would not work. I could see the mouse movements working in other programs (notepad, chrome, etc), but not where I had been working the previous hour. After several hours of throwing darts at the troubleshooting wall, I discovered that the fix was to set the AHK.exe to Run as Administrator. The question here are multiple Why did Windows 7, in all it's wisdom, suddenly decide that elevation was necessary in the middle of usage? Can these permission requirements somehow be reverted by, say, removing a key from the registry or something? How can this kind of Windows behaviour be avoided in the future?

  I was just trying to check a dump-directory for any ZIP programs like PeaZip, NanoZip, etc. and ran into an odd problem that I have seen only a few times before. I used the following command to list files whose filenames contain zip (e.g., nanozip.zip, peazip2.rar, winzip-beta.exe, etc.): dir *zip* This listed any files whose filenames contain zip, but also all files with a .zip extension (e.g., foobar.zip). I then tried the following: dir *zip*.* This gave the same results. Does anyone know of a way to get the expected results? (I know that for may be able to do it, but the output won’t be correct.)

• Apparent leak in Mozilla Firefox

  I use Mozilla Firefox 3.6 all day, opening and closing tabs quite regularly. I am noticing over time that the firefox.exe process size keeps growing and growing over time. Initially I put this down to memory fragmentation caused by opening and closing tabs, but now I am suspecting that there is a memory leak in one of the add-ons that I have installed. The problem I am seeing is that when the process size gets to about 1.5GB in the "Mem Usage" stat in Task Manager (and it gets there quite regularly), Firefox freezes up. Does anyone have any ideas about how I could diagnose whether: Any of the add-ons are leaking memory? Something else is causing this problem?

  Hi, I have a windows server 2003 where I have to create a MAPI profile to read incoming emails of exchange 2007, using a custom utility. So I want the mail icon to appear in the control panel to configure e-mail accounts. I googled a lot and seems that there was a way to do it with an utility called newprof.exe but it is no longer available: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306962 I don't have an outlook license so I need a free way to create MAPI profiles in this server, either installing a free client or some ms tool.   I'm serving up a static site via nginx. location ~* \.(avi|bin|bmp|dmg|doc|docx|dpkg|exe|flv|gif|htm|html|ico|ics|img|jpeg|jpg|m2a|m2v|mov|mp3|mp4|mpeg|mpg|msi|pdf|pkg|png|ppt|pptx|ps|rar|rss|rtf|swf|tif|tiff|txt|wmv|xhtml|xls|xml|zip)$ { root /var/www/html1; access_log off; expires 1d; } And my goal is to exclude requests like http://connect1.webinar.ru/converter/task/. Full view is like http://mydomain.tld/converter/task/setComplete/fid/34330/fn/7c2cfed32ec2eef6788e728fa46f7a80.ppt.swf. Despite the fact these URLs ends in such a format they are not static, but fake script requests, so I have a problems with them. What is the best way to do this? How can I add an exclusion for this URL or maybe I can to exclude the specific file exptension (.ppt.swf, pptx.swf) from the list of this Nginx location? Thanks.
