  • Do I need to disable access to a publisher database when setting up SQL Server 2000 Transactional Re

    I have a production database i.e. where there are constant updates and I've configured this to be published to another server using Transactional Replication. When I configure transactional replication I've been doing the following: disable access to the source database backup source DB then restore to subscription server configure replication re-enable DB access to our apps The problem with this approach is scheduling in downtime, having to suspend all the various timed scheduled tasks we run and shutting down access to our various applications that are dependant on this database. Can I just configure transactional replication without disabling access to the publishing database and the subscriber database will correctly catch up? i.e. are all the DML statements queued on the publisher and as soon as the subscriber is ready they are picked off and executed?

  • After upgrade to Lucid, computer doesn't respond to clicks or pressed keys until X restart

    I upgraded to Lucid today, and after the update the display is "frozen". I can move the cursor, but I cannot click on anything, nor does it respond to any keys. The only way to fix it is to SSH into the machine (which, by the way, works just fine), and kill and start X. Then I'm taken back to the login screen and everything works. This happens every time I boot. Let me know if there are more details that I can provide.

  • ServerName no longer works as SQL Server 2008 Default instance name?

    Folks, Somehow in struggling to install something (Sage MIP), I have unsettled my system's SQL Server 2008 instance names. If I fired up SSMS and connected to "MySystemName" (while logged into MySystemName), I used to immediately connect and could view my databases. Now if I connect to "(local)" or "." I connect just fine...but "MySystemName" gives me a timeout error. If I log in with "." and do "SELECT @@SERVERNAME" it comes back with "MySystemName" just fine. I've double checked that my network name is in the Security\Logins list, and it is, as a dbadmin. Any suggestions? I thought that having SQL Server 2005 Express might be a problem (the "battle of the default instances"), so I uninstalled that. No better.

  • Windows 7 can't find Ubuntu computer by hostname

    I got a new Windows 7 machine, and was using VNC, SSH etc to connect to my Ubuntu machine, and it worked fine previously connecting to the Ubuntu computer's hostname. Now it doesn't work if I use the machine's hostname, but it does if I use the local IP or DynDNS name. I can also access it from my Android phone using the local hostname over SSH. If I try to connect with SSH to the hostname, it says "Host does not exist". VNC says "Failed to get server address". NX says "no address associated with name", and I don't see it in Windows' "Network" folder. I've rebooted everything. I've turned off Windows firewall. It was working fine a few days ago, but now it's not. How do I figure out what's blocking it? Aha: It probably has something to do with Samba. I reset the Samba configuration the other day, and apparently this can affect it. http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1558925 I tried commenting out "encrypt passwords = No" as described there, but it still doesn't work.

  • Get Matrox Millenium video card working in Ubuntu 9.10

    I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an old PC and it is mostly working, except for some heavy drawing defects that show up whenever I start dragging a window or scrolling inside a window or menu. It looks like the video driver copies the rectangle being moved to the wrong location. I have taken a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the following line shows the detected video card: (--) PCI:*(0:0:8:0) 102b:0519:0000:0000 Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA 2064W [Millennium] rev 1, Mem@ 0xf9800000/16384, 0xfb000000/8388608, BIOS @0x????????/65536 (==) Using default built-in configuration (30 lines) (==) --- Start of built-in configuration --- Section "Device" Identifier "Builtin Default mga Device 0" Driver "mga" EndSection How do I fix the drawing defects? It turned out that the 24 bit color depth (automatically selected by ubuntu 9.10) was the problem; apparantly the mga driver doesn't handle this well for cards with little memory. I took the following steps to resolve the issue (you can skip the first three steps if you already have a semi-working xorg.conf file): Reboot ubuntu in recovery mode, to get a root console without X running. Run Xorg -configure to generate a xorg.conf.new file Copy the file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf with cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf (assuming it didn't exist yet; that's why I generated it) Open the new config file with sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make sure the screen section is configured for 16 bit color depth like this: Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Card0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 16 Modes "1024x768" EndSubSection EndSection I can't guarantee those were the only important changes I made - I tried a few things in my attempts to create a valid xorg.conf file. But I'm pretty sure that the screen section was the important part.

  • Suspending/Screen Going Off When Still In Use (Ubuntu & Arch)

    I have a laptop (HP Pavilion G6) that was running Ubuntu and for a while now (at least 6 months) has been having a problems randomly suspending whilst still in use with a full battery and still being charged. Originally the problem was with Ubuntu so I first attempted to disable suspend using every way I could find (gui settings + dconf editor) this didn't work and it still kept suspending so I ended up switching to Arch Linux. Unfortunately not long after switching to Arch Linux I ended up experiencing the same problems. So yet again I modified the settings in /etc/systemd/logind.conf to prevent it from suspending and this time it worked, kind of. Now I am experiencing the screen going off and I have to change to a different tty (by using ctrl-alt-fx, which was something I also found I had to do sometimes when waking up from suspend in Ubuntu) to get the screen to go back on. The strange thing is this only happens when running a Linux distros and only occasionally (e.g. it may happen once/twice a week at most). But when it does happen it can happen multiple times in a row. And it only seems to happen when I am using it. This may just mean that it hasn't happened yet when I am not but generally if I leave it to run something or play a video it hasn't occurred only when I am using it regardless of which program I am using (e.g. it has occurred when using firefox, vim, even when using a virtualbox vm). At first I thought it could be the CPU temperature but after monitoring it I discovered it occurred a lot of the time when my CPU was less than 50 °C. I then checked /var/log/* but could not see anything related to it suspending only a few standard things from when it was woken up. I am really out of ideas and really hoping someone can help.     We have a SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.5) on a dedicated box with a single 2.4Ghz processor, which regularly runs at 70-80% CPU. We are going to be adding a significant number of users to the application and therefore want to add a second processor to the box (scale up). Will SQL Server automatically use the second processor to balance threads, or is there additional configuration that will need to be done? In other words, will adding the second processor drop my CPU usage to 35-40% per CPU, automatically balancing the load? Based on what I read here, it seems that it will: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181007.aspx However, I've read elsewhere that CPU performance gains can be made by assigning database tables to different filegroups, but I'm not sure we want to get that complicated at this point.

  • Ubuntu 10.10 - PC shutdown before boot shortly after BIOS loads

    Hi - Since installing Ubuntu 10.10 from Karmic I've started getting problems with starting up the PC. I've done a complete wipe (Boot and Nuke) of the hard drive and reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 but the problem still occurs. There is no dual boot on the PC, just Ubuntu. Here is the problem: Each morning, when I turn the PC on from being off overnight, the PC starts up and loads the BIOS. I get the following message : "Verifying DMI Pool Data... K8 NPT Data Change...Update New Data to DMI!....... Then poof the computer shuts off. However, after switching the computer back on around 6 or 7 times after it's turned itself off, it will eventually boot up without any problem. Also, once up and running for a while, I can shutdown and restart the PC first time, without any issues. I have also noticed a problem with the USB mouse being recognised and once I finally get the computer booted up, I need to unplug and then plug the mouse back in to get it working. I've opened the PC up and checked the connections (cables, cards and memory) and it all seems fine. The main issue with troubleshooting this problem is I cannot test any suggestions or fixes until the next morning because once the computer is up and running it will remain so! I do not leave the computer on overnight to save energy. So.. is this a hardware / boot software issue? This is a very odd problem and I have googled to no avail. Any suggestions? Many thanks Clem

    I used to run Unity 2D on my work machine. Now I am trying to use Unity. Everthing looks fine except for the missing window decoration. I have installed the compiz manager. Every time I activate the plugin "window decoration" Unity "crashes" the Unity bar along with the top panel . unity --reset oder replace does nothing. The command for the window manager is /usr/bin/compiz-decorator Maybe I need to specify another window decorator?

  • Editing remotely the PHP files on a Centos server

    I have a intranet web server (Centos 6, Apache, PHP) to which I would like to give access to a developer. He will connect by remote desktop from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.4 and from here by SSH to /var/www/html folder where it has to create and edit the files. This solution was chosen because: - I could not make a remote desktop connection from Windows to Centos - The web developer need some editor for PHP files and is not allowed to install software on Windows 7 machine - it is more a test solution ( we are all learning to use Linux). When the developer is connected from Ubuntu to Centos by SSH (SFTP) he could save the changes only if on Centos the account used to connect has ownership to that folder. Can you please tell how can I give all required rights. I tried different solutions found on Internet but without to much success. Are there other way to connect to Centos server?

    So, let's say I run sudo apt-get upgrade on my Lucid Lynx and it upgrades a couple of packages I'm interested in. Is there a command to run that will open some kind of info or manual that tells me what changes were made in this new version of the package? For instance, if run the apt-get upgrade and it installs a new version of empathy. Do I have to go over to their site to review the changes made in this version, or is there a quicker command line way?

    Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.
