• Java: notify() vs. notifyAll() all over again

  If one google for "difference between notify() and notifyAll()" then a lot of explanations will pop up (leaving apart the javadoc paragraphs). It all boils down to the number of waiting threads being waken up: one in notify() and all in notifyAll(). However (if I do understand the difference between these methods right), only one thread is always selected for further monitor acquisition; in the first case the one selected by the VM, in the second case the one selected by the system thread scheduler. The exact selection procedures for both of them (in general case) are not known to the programmer. What's is the useful difference between notify() and notifyAll() then? Am I missing something?

• Virtual Machine Manager Error - Error determing default hypervisor

  I have Fedora 11 and trying to get Xen working (which I think it is already) but the Virtual Machine Manager cannot find the hypervisor. When starting Virtual Machine Manager, I receive the following error Error determining default hypervisor. Could not populate a default connection. Make sure the appropriate virtualization packages are installed (kvm, qemu, etc.) and that libvirtd has been restarted to notice the change. A hypervisor connection can be manually added via File - Add Connection I've restarted libvirtd a few times and tried connecting manually but can't work it out.   I've switched computers a few times recently, and somewhere along the way I lost my .emacs. I'm trying to build it up again, but while I'm at it, I thought I'd pick up other good configurations that other people use. So, if you use Emacs, what's in your .emacs? Mine is pretty barren right now, containing only: Global font-lock-mode! (global-font-lock-mode 1) My personal preferences with respect to indentation, tabs, and spaces. Use cperl-mode instead of perl-mode. A shortcut for compilation. What do you think is useful?

• html parsing with libxml

  In another thread I got convinced into using HTML parsers instead of regexps for HTML parsing (I thought they would work fine, but they didn't ;) ). I thought of using libxml (it has some HTML parser built in), but failed to find any useful tutorial. I also found this site and it says here it should do fine even with severly broken HTML. Could you give me some examples of HTML parsing with libxml, or maybe recommend some different free library for Linux? I'm using C++. I just thought someone would have some example code, so that I don't have to analyze the headers ;)

• What does "?ref=ts" mean in a FACEBOOK APP url

  When Facebook drives traffic to an app, they often append &ref=whatever to the query string. This is useful for figuring out which integration points are working or not. I've figured out what some of these mean. For example: ref=bookmarks - the user clicked on a bookmark. ref=game_my_recent - the user clicked on the upper portion of the games dashboard. Does anyone know what "ref=ts" means? It accounts for a ton of traffic. I've viewed source on pages all over common FB pages and cannot find a match for ant piece of content generated by any of my apps. • SQL Server: Profiling statements inside a User-Defined Function

  I'm trying to use SQL Server Profiler (2005) to track down some application performance problems. One of the calls being made is to a table-valued user-defined function. This function wraps a select that joins several tables together. In SQL Server Profiler, the call to the UDF is logged. However, the select that underlies the UDF isn't being logged at all. Because of this, I'm not getting useful data on which tables & indexes are being hit. I'd like to feed this info into the Database Tuning Advisor for some indexing advice. Is there any way (short of unwrapping the queries themselves) to log the tables called by UDFs in Profiler?

• Mysql table comment increase length. Is this a bug?

  Hi, I read the mysql table lengths questions on stackoverflow on here: questions/391323/table-comment-length-in-mysql questions/2473934/how-to-increase-mysql-table-comments-length The first link suggests that it can be done and the second suggests it cannot. I don't know why there is this limitation as the comments are very useful. Imagine if there was a limit of 60 characters for your programs. I wrote about this on my site and have some snapshots to the phpmyadmin and Dbforge MySQL IDEs: http://mysql.tutorialref.com/mysql-table-comment-length-limit.html Is there a way to change this in phpmyadmin or perhaps even on the CLI? There is a bug commit report from MySQL on this particular problem (follow the link from the stackoverflow (first link). It seems to state that the length problem is fixed. I have MySQL 5.1.42. • Excel tab sheet names vs. Visual Basic sheet names

  It seems that Visual Basic can not reference sheets according to user-modified sheet names. The worksheet tabs can have their names changed, but it seems that Visual Basic still thinks of the worksheet names as Sheet1, etc., despite the workbook tab having been changed to something useful. I have this: TABname = rng.Worksheet.Name ' Excel sheet TAB name, not VSB Sheetx name. Thanks, Bill Gates. but I would like to use sheet names in Visual Basic routines. The best I could come up so far is to Select Case the Worksheet Tab vs. Visual Basic names, which doesn't make my day. Visual Basic must know the Sheet1, Sheet2, etc., names. How can I get these associated with the Excel tab names so that I don't have to maintain a look-up table which changes with each new sheet or sheet tab re-naming? Thanks in advance for your replies.

• Hashing words to numbers with respect to definition

  As part of a larger project, I need to read in text and represent each word as a number. For example, if the program reads in "Every good boy deserves fruit", then I would get a table that converts 'every' to '1742', 'good' to '977513', etc. Now, obviously I can just use a hashing algorithm to get these numbers. However, it would be more useful if words with similar meanings had numerical values close to each other, so that 'good' becomes '6827' and 'great' becomes '6835', etc. As another option, instead of a simple integer representing each number, it would be even better to have a vector made up of multiple numbers, eg (lexical_category, tense, classification, specific_word) where lexical_category is noun/verb/adjective/etc, tense is future/past/present, classification defines a wide set of general topics and specific_word is much the same as described in the previous paragraph. Does any such an algorithm exist? If not, can you give me any tips on how to get started on developing one myself? I code in C++.

  If a destructor throws in C++ during stack unwinding caused by an exception, the program terminates. (That's why destructors should never throw in C++.) If a finally block is entered in Java because of an exception in the corresponding try block and that finally block throws another exception, the first exception is silently swallowed. This question crossed my mind: Could a programming language handle multiple exceptions being thrown at the same time? Would that be useful? Have you ever missed that ability? Is there a language that already supports this? Is there any experience with such an approach? Any thoughts?

  I've been doing quite large application recently with Java - Swing. Now I'd like to move to web. Basically - I am not Microsoft guy, Java is fine with me. I've checked some basics of Java EE framework and decided that my choice will be Spring. I already am familiar with JDBC. Learning Spring is one thing, but working just with GUIs (C++ and Java) means that I have very poor knowledge of web development.   Hi, On my SSAS 2008 instance if a backup/restore of any database is made to/from a UNC path I get an error : The following system error occurred from a call to GetOverlappedResult for Physical file: '\server\share\OLAPDB.abf', Logical file: '' : Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. . Server: The operation has been cancelled. (Microsoft.AnalysisServices) Creating/copying/moving a file on the share of any size on the share using explorer or the command prompt works. • Eclipse Outline View - Visible JavaScript Categories in Eclipse?

  I just found an option in the little white down arrow in Eclipse that reads "Visible Categories..." How can I use this? It seems to me that it could be used to only show functions that have an @category in their comments, but I haven't been able to make that work. If it did work it would be incredibly useful for separating out Unit Tests from their common-functions and separating them from the setUp and tearDown methods, so what is it really for? By the way I'm editing a Javascript file in the Eclipse "Javascript Editor", I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

• Ruby GUI (non-complex layouts)

  I've done quite a bit of research on Ruby GUI design, and it appears to be the one area where Ruby tends to be behind the curve. I've explored the options of MonkeyBars, wxRuby, fxRuby, Shoes, etc. and was just wanted to get some input from the Ruby community. While they're definitely usable, the development on each seems to have fallen off. There is not a great deal of useful documentation or user bases that I could find on any (minus the fxRuby book). I'm just looking to make a simple GUI, so I don't really want to spend hundreds of hours learning the intricacies of the more complex tools or attempt to use something that is no longer even being developed (Shoes is the type of application I'm looking for, but it's extremely buggy and not being actively developed.) Out of all of the options, which would you guys recommend as being the quickest to pick up and that still has some sort of development base? Thanks!

• Developing FIrebug like web application for CSS things.

  I am developing a web application for web designing. One part of it includes changing CSS styles on the run and saving the same back to server. I see that, first part of my motive is implemented there in firebug, where I can view CSS style rules applied to a particular HTML element and can change them to view the effect. An earlier question at SO lead to me firebug lite source code https://getfirebug.com/firebug-lite-debug.js , which is far less confusing than full version of firebug. My question was that, is there any way I can get documentation of the firebug/firebug lite code which can speed things up for me. • CakePHP with AJAX loaded pages

  Hi there. I am trying to create a website in which all interaction takes place on a single page which has its main content filled via AJAX. The site is effectively a template with a central interaction area. Users can click links which results in an AJAX request to fetch a new page to display in the interaction area. In this way, the page never refreshes, instead it has its content fetched and displayed via AJAX. I have found that the CakePHP framework has many useful features that could work with this project, however, I do not no if the Cake's MVC architecture would work with my single page architecture. So, what I really want to know is if I can use CakePHP features and functions on a website of this type, and also if anyone could give me any helpful tips on how I would go about implementing it. I am sorry if this is rambling or vague, english is not my mother tongue so I have trouble expressing what I have to say clearly. Thank you for your time.

• How do boost operators work?

  boost::operators automatically defines operators like + based on manual implementations like += which is very useful. To generate those operators for T, one inherits from boost::operators<T> as shown by the boost example: class MyInt : boost::operators<MyInt> I am familiar with the CRTP pattern, but I fail to see how it works here. Specifically, I am not really inheriting any facilities since the operators aren't members. boost::operators seems to be completely empty, but I'm not very good at reading boost source code. Could anyone explain how this works in detail? Is this mechanism well-known and widely used?

• LINQPad - Dump extension method - I want one!

  Hi, LINQPad is amazing, particularly useful is the Dump() extension methods which renders objects and structs of almost any type, anonymous or not, to the console. Initially, when I moved to Visual Studio 2010, I tried to make my own Dump method using a delegate to get the values to render for anonymous types etc. It's getting pretty complicated though and whilst it was fun and educational at first what I need is a solid implementation. Having checked out the LinqPad code in reflector I am even more assured that I'm not going to get the implementation right. Is there a free library I can include to provide the Dump functionality?   I'm using NetTcpBinding in WCF and i want to send a Stream which does not exceed the size of 1 MB. I have set the MaxReceivedMessageSize to a really high number and that works fine of course. But I am curious: Does setting the MaxReceivedMessageSize to a very hight number have any (negative) impact or would it be useful to set it just above the size I actually want to send/receive? What kind of overhead can I expect when using the NetTcpBinding to transfer a stream? Meaning: when I send a stream of 1 MB, how large does my MaxReceivedMessageSize has to be?

• eclipse debugger: attaching source-code of maven managed libraries

  I'd like to use the source code of maven-managed dependencies when debugging our webapp in eclipse. I have managed to attach the sources to the libraries in the "Maven Managed Depedencies" classpath container, i.e. when I open a class file from a depedency (e.g. using Ctrl-Shift-T), I see the source code. However, when I launch the tomcat within eclipse, and execution halts on a breakpoint in that same class, the editor pane only displays the text "source not found", and a button to edit the "source lookup path". I have attempted to manually add the "Maven Managed Dependencies" classpath container, only to be told "Use maven project settings to configure depedency resolution". However, I see no useful setting in that property pane ... How can I attach those sources?

However as I work my way through implementing Schema Collections, I find it very difficult to maintain them. Schema Collection DDL allows only CREATE and ALTER/ADD nodes to existing schemes. CREATE XML SCHEMA COLLECTION [ <relational_schema>. ]sql_identifier AS 'XSD Content' ALTER XML SCHEMA COLLECTION [ <relational_schema>. ]sql_identifier ADD 'Schema Component' When you want to remove any node from a schema you have to issue following DDL's. If that schema collection assigned to a table column, you have to alter table to remove schema collection association from that column Drop the schema collection object Re-Create schema collection Alter table column to re-associate schema collection to that column. This is pain when it comes to 100+ of schemes in a collection. Also you have to re-create XML indexes all over again, if any. Any solutions, suggestions, tricks to make this schema collection object editing process easier?

• Assembly Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll does not load

  When trying to load Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll from any project, it throws a FileNotFoundException. The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E), with no innerException. Even the simple code like the following throws that exception: static void Main(string[] args) { Assembly.LoadFile(@"C:\Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll"); } I run XP x64, but I've set the platform in the configuration manager to x86, because I know it shouldn't(doesn't) work on x64 or Any CPU. I've manually added the dll file to GAC, but that didn't solve the problem. I have also tried the M$ Assembly Binding Log Viewer to see if those logs had any useful information, but they didn't. Everything, the loading etc, was a success according to them. Any suggestions? please?

• Can I programatically get hold of the Autos/local variables that is shown when debugging?

  Im trying to build an error-logger that loggs running values that is active in the function that caused the error. (just for fun so its not a critical problem) When going in break-mode and looking at the locals-tab and autos-tab you can see all active variables (name, type and value), it would be useful to get hold of that for logging purposes when an error occur and on some other occasions. For my example, I just want to find all local variables that are of type string and integer and store the name and value of them. Is this possible with reflection? Any tips or pointers that get me closer to my goal would be very appreciated. I have toyed with using expression on a specifik object (a structure) to create an automapper against a dataset, but I have not done anything like what I ask for above, so please make me happy and say its possible.
