  • Internet Explorer 8 crashes on Citrix, Windows 2003

    Difficult to decide where this Q fits best. It's server-related and programming-related. But it's a user-problem so I'll put it here, first... I work on a (Delphi) application that uses an Internet Explorer component to show information to the user. It's not a web application, just a desktop application which creates HTML pages to display them within a browser component. Some of the information on these webpages are retrieved from a web server, while other information is provided "live" by the application itself. It works quite well, but it adds an IE-process (child process) next to my application. And this IE process seems to eat a lot of system resources. For normal users, this is not a real problem, so it's not an issue that I want to fix in the code. But one customer of this application uses it with about 100 users on a Citrix/Windows 2003 environment and they complain about problems with the application. IE8 tends to crash, not show, hang or cause other mayhap. Then again, I've warned them that -officially- I won't support any Citrix environment. But I'm willing to help them to find a solution to fix this, and if need be I could make minor changes to my code to help fix this issie. (If possible.) But basically, I need a solution that any user/administrator on this Citrix environment can follow/use. Any ideas on how to resolve this resource problem?

  • Router for creating site to site VPN to server provider using Cisco ASA 5540

    We have dedicated servers hosted for us by a third party, we connect to these over a VPN. My server provider uses Cisco ASA 5540 as VPN devices. Currently we're using software clients on individual machines to connect to this VPN, either: Cisco VPN Client Shrew Soft VPN Connect However, I'm looking to purchase a new load balancing router for our office and thought this could be an opportunity to get VPN client duties taken over by hardware. We could then create a permanent VPN tunnel that could be used by anyone on the network with no software client necessary. Sadly I'm not the most knowledgeable on this kind of stuff so is: 1) This a realizable goal? Next I need to know what kind of hardware I will need. I'm not looking to spend lots of money on this (~$500), so doubtful I can afford any Cisco kit. Therefore, this is the most promising candidate I've seen (as far as my limited knowledge goes): Draytek Vigor 2955 - http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2955.html 2) Would this be compatible with the Cisco kit my server provider uses? 3) If not, are there any alternatives I should consider?   • Avoiding DNS timeouts when a dns server fails

    Hi there. We have a small datacenter with about a hundred hosts pointing to 3 internal dns servers (bind 9). Our problem comes when one of the internal dns servers becomes unavailable. At that point all the clients that point to that server start performing very slowly. The problem seems to be that the stock linux resolver doesn't really have the concept of "failing over" to a different dns server. You can adjust the timeout and number of retries it uses, (and set rotate so it will work through the list), but no matter what settings one uses our services perform much more slowly if a primary dns server becomes unavailable. At the moment this is one of the largest sources of service disruptions for us. My ideal answer would be something like "RTFM: tweak /etc/resolv.conf like this...", but if that's an option I haven't seen it. I was wondering how other folks handled this issue? I can see 3 possible types of solutions: Use linux-ha/Pacemaker and failover ips (so the dns IP VIPs are "always" available). Alas, we don't have a good fencing infrastructure, and without fencing pacemaker doesn't work very well (in my experience Pacemaker lowers availability without fencing). Run a local dns server on each node, and have resolv.conf point to localhost. This would work, but it would give us a lot more services to monitor and manage. Run a local cache on each node. Folks seem to consider nscd "broken", but dnrd seems to have the right feature set: it marks dns servers as up or down, and won't use 'down' dns servers. Any-casting seems to work only at the ip routing level, and depends on route updates for server failure. Multi-casting seemed like it would be a perfect answer, but bind does not support broadcasting or multi-casting, and the docs I could find seem to suggest that multicast dns is more aimed at service discovery and auto-configuration rather than regular dns resolving. Am I missing an obvious solution?

    I have question about strange behavior of my openVPN configuration on Debian lenny. I have 2 server configs (one proto tcp-server based and one proto udp based). ISP bandwidth is 7Mbit/7Mbit. When I uses proto tcp-server my download server rate is fine around 6,4 Mbit/s, but upload rate is about 3Mbit/s. When I uses proto udp, my download server rate is around 3Mbit/s and upload rate around 6,4Mbit/s. I tried to handle the MTU, MSSFIX and cipher on/off on server and client configs to synchronize rates, but without solution.   • Automate ripping TV show DVDs

    RipIt & Handbrake do a really good job of ripping and compressing. For normal "single main feature" DVDs I have a good workflow, and for the most part handbrake does a good job of figuring out what the main title is. The process for ripping a DVD that has multiple episodes of something kinda sucks. Has anyone made any progress on automating (or at least simplifying) the process of getting show-s01e01.avi from a DVD?

    The internet is full of vague information about how you can downgrade the Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8, and I kind of want to try it, but only if it's not going to be too inconvenient to uninstall if I need to. Here is my exact situation: I installed Windows 8 using an OEM CD. If I install the Windows 8.1 preview, can I use the factory restore feature to downgrade back to Windows 8? Does this change based on whether I installed using the Windows Store or the .iso?

I pointed the Windows 7 version of the Windows Media Center Movie Library feature to the network share and it's able to find and play all my movies when running Windows Media Center from the local computer. When I try this on my Xbox 360 extender it never discovers any of my movies. Anyone able to get this to work?

    Hi, I'm getting the following error when trying to load an Asp.NET MVC App on IIS 7 with Sql Server 2008 Express. The App uses Linq to SQL. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) I've done some searching and all answers point to enabling TCP connections in Sql Server Configuration which I have done to no avail. The connection string I am using is: Server=SERVERNAME\SQLEXPRESS;Database=DBName;Integrated Security=true The catch. I have another app that already could talk to the Sql Server just fine. Even before playing around with the Sql Server Configuration Settings. The other app uses the following connectionstring: Data Source=SERVERNAME\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=OtherDbName;Integrated Security=True;Persist Security Info=False;Connect Timeout=120 I've tried this connectionstring on the app that isn't working and it still doesn't work. Please help. I think i'm about to go crazy

    Can Outlook 2010 send me reminder alarms when the program is closed? If not, is there an add-on for this? Also, I use OneNote to take class notes, and sometimes, I will use the draw feature. When I close the program and come back to the notebook later, the drawings will shift and be scrambled, making my notes impossible to read and a huge hassle to fix. Has MS released an update other than (KB2288640), 32-Bit Edition to fix this?

    I'm using mailx on my raspberry pi to try to send text messages updates for event monitoring. My phone number: 9876543210 My phone's email-to-text gateway address: [email protected] I can 1) Send emails from my raspberry pi to various email addresses. mail -r [email protected] -s "My Subject" [email protected] < body.txt and off it goes and is successfully delivered. 2) Send emails from various email address (not on RPi) using mailx to the above phone-email address and have them delivered as text messages. However, when sending emails to [email protected] from the Raspberry Pi using mailx the emails seem to spiral into the void and are never heard of again (no errors, no undeliverable messages, nothing). Does anyone know what could be causing this to go awry? Something about the basic deployment of the mail server on the pi? EDIT Based on @kobaltz's suggestion, I used sendmail instead. This led to a hang, then an error that stated that I lacked a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). I then used this website's instructions to add a domain name to the RPi. To paraphrase: I have set the FQDN in /etc/hostname: my-host-name.my-domain.com and /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.5 my-host-name.my-domain.com my-host-name Then add to /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: MASQUERADE_AS(`my-domain.com') MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(`my-host-name.my-domain.com') FEATURE(`masquerade_entire_domain') FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope') I put this in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf, BEFORE the MAILER() lines, ran sendmailconfig, answered Yes to the questions about using the existing files, and restarted sendmail. Emails now have the proper domain name. Progress, however, I am now stuck at the following error: 354 Enter mail, end with "." on a line by itself >>> . 050 <[email protected]>...     I've got a problem with a VIA C3 (1GHz)-system: the system freezes immediately when the CPU frequency goes under 731MHz because of an incompatibility with the (not completely implemented) i686 commands and a powersave feature of the kernel. There is a workaround: deactivate the "longhaul" kernelmodule via alias longhaul off in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases. But the system freezes before I can install any Linux distribution - even Clonezilla freezes. Is there a possibility to deactivate the module with a GRUB boot parameter before the kernel is loaded?

I did this about 4 years ago on my ThinkPad T41, using a configuration file - but I can no longer find any info on this configuration file, and there are no configuration files under C:\Program Files\Synaptics. The pointing stick is usually known as TrackPoint or UltraNav in IBM material. Specifically, I'm trying to reduce scrolling sensitivity in Google Chrome on a Windows 7 64-bit X61 ThinkPad.
