  • how to write unicode hello world in C on windows

    - by hatchetman82
im tyring to get this to work: #define UNICODE #define _UNICODE #include <wchar.h> int main() { wprintf(L"Hello World!\n"); wprintf(L"£?, ?, ?!\n"); return 0; } using visual studio 2008 express (on windows xp, if it matters). when i run this from the command prompt (started as cmd /u which is supposed to enable unicode ?) i get this: C:\dev\unicodevs\unicodevs\Debugunicodevs.exe Hello World! -ú8 C:\dev\unicodevs\unicodevs\Debug which i suppose was to be expected given that the terminal does not have the font to render those. but what gets me is that even if i try this: C:\dev\unicodevs\unicodevs\Debugcmd /u /c "unicodevs.exe output.txt" the file produced (even though its UTF-8 encoded) looks like: Hello World! £ì the source file itself is defined as unicode (encoded in UTF-8 without BOM). the compiler output when building: 1------ Rebuild All started: Project: unicodevs, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------ 1Deleting intermediate and output files for project 'unicodevs', configuration 'Debug|Win32' 1Compiling... 1main.c 1.\main.c(1) : warning C4005: 'UNICODE' : macro redefinition 1 command-line arguments : see previous definition of 'UNICODE' 1.\main.c(2) : warning C4005: '_UNICODE' : macro redefinition 1 command-line arguments : see previous definition of '_UNICODE' 1Note: including file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\wchar.h 1Note: including file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\crtdefs.h 1Note: including file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\sal.h 1C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\sal.h(108) : warning C4001: nonstandard extension 'single line comment' was used 1Note: including file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\crtassem.h 1Note: including file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\vadefs.h 1Note: including file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\swprintf.inl 1Note: including file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\include\wtime.inl 1Linking... 1Embedding manifest... 1Creating browse information file... 1Microsoft Browse Information Maintenance Utility Version 9.00.30729 1Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. • Good source for studying professional software development with Visual Studio 2010?

    - by Ben
I spent a lot of time reading blogs and tutorials on the Net regarding how to do this and that with VS2010, but I thought it would be better to learn it in a more systematic way. Do you know of a good website/book that will teach me how to use Visual Studio 2010/2008 Team System + Microsoft Project to perform various tasks from Project Management to code development and testing in the way the software was designed for? Thank you.

  • What is the best way to test using grails using IDEA?

    - by egervari
I am seriously having a very non-pleasant time testing using Grails. I will describe my experience, and I'd like to know if there's a better way. The first problem I have with testing is that Grails doesn't give immediate feedback to the developer when .save() fails inside of an integration test. So let's say you have a domain class with 12 fields, and 1 of them is violating a constraint and you don't know it when you create the instance... it just doesn't save. Naturally, the test code afterward is going to fail. This is most troublesome because the thingy under test is probably fine... and the real risk and pain is the setup code for the test itself. So, I've tried to develop the habit of using .save(failOnError: true) to avoid this problem, but that's not something that can be easily enforced by everyone working on the project... and it's kind of bloaty. It'd be nice to turn this on for code that is running as part of a unit test automatically. Integration Tests run slow. I cannot understand how 1 integration test that saves 1 object takes 15-20 seconds to run. With some careful test planning, I've been able to get 1000 tests talking to an actual database and doing dbunit dumps after every test to happen in about the same time! This is dumb. It is hard to run all the unit tests and not integration tests in IDEA. Integration tests are a massive pain. Idea actually shows a GREEN BAR when integration tests fail. The output given by grails indicates that something failed, but it doesn't say what it was. It says to look in the test reports... which forces the developer to launch up their file system to hunt the stupid html file down. What a pain. Then once you got the html file and click to the failing test, it'll tell you a line number. Since these reports are not in the IDE, you can't just click the stack trace to go to that line of code... you gotta go back and find it yourself. ARGGH!@!@! Maybe people put up with this, but I refuse. Testing should not be this painful. It should be fast and painless, or people won't do it. Please help. What is the solution? Rails instead of Grails? Something else entirely? I love the Grails framework, but they never demo their testing for a reason. They have a snazzy framework, but the testing is painful. After having used Scala for the last 1.5 months, and being totally spoiled by ScalaTest... I can't go back to this.

  • Any way to automatically wrap comments at column 80 in Visual Studio 2008? ..or display where column

    - by Jon Cage
Is there any way to automatically wrap comments at the 80-column boundary as you type them? ..or failing that, any way to display a faint line at the coulmn 80 boundary to make wrapping them manually a little easier? Several other IDEs I use have one or other of those functions and it makes writing comments that wrap in sensible places much easier/quicker. [Edit] If (like me) you're using Visual C++ Express, you need to change the VisualStudio part of the key into VCExpress - had me confused for a while there!

  • Excluding standard directories from code coverage results with C++/CLI

    - by brickner
I have a Visual Studio 2010 .NET 4 solution with C# projects and a C++/CLI project. I use Visual Studio's built in unit tests and code coverage. Other than the fact that Visual Studio 2010 coverage tool for C++/CLI projects seems to be much weaker than Visual Studio 2008 coverage tool, I get weird results. For example, I get uncovered code in this file: c:\program files (x86)\microsoft visual studio 10.0\vc\include\xstring And some other files in that directory. I want to exclude this code from coverage results. Is there a way to put some exclude attributes on that code? If not, is there a different automatic way to exclude that code from coverage? If not, is there a way to use EXCLUDE option to exclude it? Can it be done automatically within Visual Studio without running the coverage tool from command prompt? Any other solutions?

    - by skynate
When I create a new Reporting Services report or try to open an existing report (that has been working) in Visual Studio 2008. I cannot view the design. I get no error message and it only shows html code in the "Design View". I've tried reinstalling VS2008 and BIDS, but hasn't worked. This was all working when I last used it 2 weeks ago. -nate

  • How do I set Environment Variables in Visual Studio 2010?

    - by xarzu
How do I set Environment Variables in Visual Studio 2010? I found this web page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee479070.aspx Which says: From the Project menu, choose Properties. In the left pane, select Configuration Properties, and then select Environment. But when I select "Configuration Properties", there is no "Enviroment" option: http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h292/Athono/microsoft/newstuff.jpg This is an example in VS 2008: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b279/GrunchCan/env.jpg But how is it done in VS 2010?

    - by jake
Does any one know how to connect to MySQL 5.1 with Visual Studio 2010? I have already tried the MySQL Connector/ODBC route and it got me really nasty results. The table rows were all listed as a view in the views section and nothing at all was listed in the tables or procedures folder.

  • How do I disable zoom on control-scroll in Visual Studio 2010?

    - by Lawrence Johnston
Visual Studio 2010 adds a zoom setting on the bottom left of the text editor (to the left of the horizontal scroll bar) and also adopts the control + mouse scroll idiom for zooming in and out. The former is fine, but I dislike the latter as I am occasionally still holding control when I start scrolling my source code (which results in the text size radically changing and completely throwing me off whatever I was doing). How do I disable it?

  • How do I debug an ASP.NET web service in Visual Studio?

    - by Ben McCormack
I have an ASP.NET .ASMX web service that I converted to .NET 4.0 with VS 2010 and is hosted in an IIS 7.5 (Windows 7) application pool. I have a simple html page that I use to make the AJAX request to the web service. How can I debug what's going on in the web service in Visual Studio? Because the HTML ajax request doesn't seem "tied in" to the web service, which is located on my local IIS service, I can't figure out how to debug it.

  • Can I make Visual Studio's code completion window more like Eclipse (Java)?

    - by Matt
Is it possible to make Visual Studio 2010's code completion window more like that of Eclipse (Java)? In particular, I'd love the code completion window to give me a variable's type, and a method's return type and expected parameters, without needing to hover the highlight over that particular variable/method. VS's code completion's little icons that indicate if something is a property, method etc are useful, but they just aren't enough.

  • How to set the correct Visual Studio version as JIT debugger?

    - by Lothar
I have VS2003, VS2005 and VS2008 installed on my machine. The C++ application is compiled with VS2005 but when it crashs and i select debug the Just-In-Time Debugging dialog comes up and only offers me "New instance of Visual Studio .NET 2003". Debugging a 2005 compiled program with 2003 is not possible. If i attach the process to VS2005 then it works well, but this is very inconvenient. How do i set .NET 2005 vor JIT debugging?
