  • What to do with old OS install media?

    I'm doing an end-of-the-year clean up and found some old OS install media - Mac OS X 10.3.5, Windows 2000, Windows XP. It seems wrong to just throw them out but they can't have a home with me anymore.  Is there some place I can donate them to?  Anyone know of anyone collecting this stuff for posterity?

    Win7-64: I have to do a midi project, and I just realized my asus p5k motherboard has no midi device, just the ad1988b high def audio chip. There is no midi device listed in device manager. How then is windows media player playing .mid files? It is playing them ok, is this some kind of software simulation of midi?

  • Windows Media Player - always show Current Time/Total Time

    I'm using Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7. When I open a video file then it by default only shows the current position (time). If I click on it once then it changes to format Current Time / Total Time Is there any way to make this format permanent (registry hack/some setting I have not noticed)? Right now every time I close WMP and open another file it's back to the default (only current time) setting.

For this i found the free limited version of "Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture" which I want to automate. Is there a separate command line interface for Microsoft Expression Encoder Screen Capture or do I have to use the command line interface for Expression Studio? I found this options: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc294683.aspx. But before I dig deeper, I want to know if I am on the right way.

  • Media Archive System with branches?

    In short, how can I get VCS features (revisioning, branching, and deduplication) for a media collection that's far too large for most/all VCS systems? Background I have a 300GB music folder; unfortunately, I only have the hard drive space for this on my desktop system. However, a good portion of my collection is FLAC; therefore, I could theoretically have a space-optimized version in which I transcode all the FLAC to mp3 or some other lossy format, and use only that version on the laptop. However, a portion of my collection isn't FLAC. And that which isn't FLAC shouldn't be transcoded to an equivalent format; it won't have any space savings, which is the point. Moreover, it shouldn't be duplicated: the mp3/ogg portions of the collection should probably be exactly the same files. Thoughts One solution is to have format-specific organization of my music folders, and use some script to transcode the FLAC directory to mp3 or such into another directory. Another is some sort of hack using entirely separate copies and symbolic links for deduplication, or something similar. But these also have a disadvantage of lacking versioning; I'd like to be able to reorganize my music collection, retag things, etc. and save history. This isn't key, but would be awfully nice. I can't see it as entirely unreasonable to set up VCS hooks or something equivalent to keep directory structure synced between two copies, update tags, and transcode FLAC automatically into the space-optimized copy. Basically, the system I really want is a version control system. Two branches: one archival/desktop branch including the FLAC, one space-optimized/laptop branch without it; most VCSes would deal well with whole chunks being the same files well by compressing in a reasonable way (i.e. don't keep two copies of the same data). I could also do a lot of what I talk about above with hooks. But I don't know of any VCS that would deal with a 300GB repository with almost 20k files. Many of them would just not even initialize the whole affair; others would just do it inexpressibly slowly or otherwise badly. checkpoint looks like it's designed for something close (it's at least for media), but wouldn't do deduplication well (and I'm not convinced I'd be able to script it to do things like automatic transcoding and directory-structure syncing). So. Is there anything out there that can do all this, or should I consider it a programming project?

  • How to right click and play audio folder on Windows Media Player 12

    It's always been hard for me to add a music folder with subfolders to Windows Media Player's playlist. I double click a file in the folder (or click on WMP shortcut), WMP opens, and I drag the other files or folders manually to the playlist. Isn't there an option to add a right-click context menu item that can automatically add all audio contents in a folder (with subfolders) to WMP playlist?

    Since quite some time Adobe Technologies released the Linux version of Adobe AIR to bring web applications and widgets to your desktop. Installing new applications on a Linux system is not always as easy as switching the computer on. The following instructions might be helpful to install Adobe AIR on any Linux system. First of all, get the latest installer of Adobe AIR from http://get.adobe.com/air/ - as of writing this article the file name is AdobeAIRInstaller.bin. Save the download in your preferred folder. Now, there are two ways to run the installer - visual style or console style. Visual Installation Launch your favorite or standard file manager like thunar or nautilus and browse to the folder where the AdobeAIRInstaller.bin has been saved. Right click on the file and choose 'Properties' in the context menu Set 'Execute' permissions and confirm modifications with OK Rename file into AdobeAIRInstaller Double click and follow the instructions Using the console Open a terminal like xterm Change into the directory where you stored the download Run this command:[code]chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin[/code] Now run this command:[code]sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin[/code] The normal installer will open, install it.   • WPF MediaElement pauses when trying to play Windows Media Center recording

    I have an WPF application that starts a live tv recording using Windows Media Center, using the Windows Media Center SDK, waits 2 minutes and then plays the currently recording file (.wtv) in a WPF MediaElement. The problem is that the video visual will freeze and it is not consistent on when it happens. I have looked into it and discovered that the timeline is still moving so the MediaElement still thinks that the video is playing. This happens only when trying to play a video file that is currently being recorded, previously recorded shows play just fine. Both Media Center and Media Player can play those files without any hiccups; it is only the WPF MediaElement that has this problem. Any help would be appreciated.
