• Normalise this Table?

  Hello all, I am creating a social bookmarking app. I am having a re-thought of the DB design in the middle of development. Should I normalise the bookmarks table and remove the tag columns that I have into a separate table. I have 10 tags per bookmark and therefore 10 columns per record (per bookmark). It seems to me that breaking the table into two would just mean I would have to do a join but the way I currently have it, its a straight select - but the table doesn't feel right...? Thanks all

• Vimperator and scripts directory on Windows 7

  Just trying out Vimperator for the first time. For the life of me however, I can't figure out how to add a script (specifically for delicious bookmarks). Running Windows 7 x64. No plugin directory: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\dgj7o1s1.default\extensions\[email protected] No plugin directory in default location: C:\Users\username\vimperator If I create the "plugin" directory, the script is still not available. Any suggestions? I'm really liking Vimperator, but when you can't figure something out, you really CAN'T figure it out.

• Preferred data-format for user-data in java applications?

  I'm currently developing a desktop application in java, which stores user data such as bookmarks for ftp-servers. When deciding how to save these informations, I ended up using xml, simply because I like the way xpath works. I was thinking about json too, which seems more lightweight. What is your preferred way to store data in java desktop applications (in general) and why? What about java-persistence, does that have any advantages worth noting? And how much does the size of user data matter? Its not always possible to store data in a database (or preferable), and in my experience xml does not scale well. Let me know what you think!

• Bookmarkabale ajax calls with MVC routing

  I have a page with a menu that uses JQuery AJAX calls to populate the page with. To reflect any changes I update the URL with a #... instead of ?... or /... So an URL that originally reads : htpp://localhost/pages/index/id=1 would look like : http://localhost/#pages/index/id=1. If a user bookmarks this, and later comes back to the page, I wonder if it's possible to use the second URL in my route decoding, or if I have to load it blank, then use the same JS/Ajax to populate the page? In my mind it is problematic to use Ajax in these cases if a user copies the link and mails it to a friend with JavaScript disabled. edit#1: Fixed some spelling.

• Firebug is permanently inactive

  Firebug used to work fine -- until something happened -- not sure what. FF 3.6.3 on XP PRo current. The net effect is Firebug is now always inactive. The icon is present and gray as is normal. Click on the icon and I get: It does this regardless of the site. I've uninstalled Firebug and re-installed. nada. Additionally, the Tools Firebug menu yields nothing. The only unusual issue I can think of is it may of stopped working sometime after I created an additional FF profile (which has since been removed) for a test. Somehow, in removing the extra profile, my bookmarks were deleted. I recovered them from by my online-backup service. Any suggestions? I'd really like to get the Firebug functionality back. thanks.

• Popular open source projects using Zend Framework

  Hello, I am trying to find any open source project based on Zend Framework. Something well written and as popular as Wordpress or Drupal to see actual benefits of ZF as well as possibly use it as an example. The only 'showcase' I managed to find is http://framework.zend.com/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=14134. But this list looks confusing as for the 'official' PHP framework. The same is about ZF statistics by numbers (http://framework.zend.com/about/numbers) - 10 million downloads against 400 actual projects which is less than 500 examples in the user guide... Also Yahoo chose Symfony for their bookmarks service not ZF... Am I missing something? Thank you!

• How do I get developers to look at our bug tracking page regularly?

  We've recently started using Trac and are still trying to figure out the best way to use it in our environment. It's great, but it will only be effective if developers look at it once in a while and I'm trying to figure out how to instill that habit in them. I've contemplated several solutions, such as: forcing them to use Trac as their homepage (too draconian) handing out bookmarks to the RSS feeds (same problem--no one will look at them) automatic email notifications (won't drive them to the site and might just annoy them more than anything else) What are some other solutions? What have you tried that worked?

  A user may have several labels, and links. Then, a user associates a label (or more) to a link. How does one represent the later relationship? A solution could be a many-to-many relationship btw user and link with the optional attribute label. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Java_Persistence/ManyToMany#Mapping_a_Join_Table_with_Additional_Columns In this case the relationship btw user and label may better be 'virtual'. Any alternative I'm not seeing? PS: I've used google bookmarks terminology, as it matches my case quite well.

  Hi, I have the following entities in CoreData: Village - villageID Bookmark - (relation) village There are multiple villages with each an unique villageID. I have a entity Bookmark which only has a relation to a Village entity; it isn't possible to make a reverse relation. Now I would like to get the village entities where there exists a Bookmark relation. I've red something about subqueries, but I can't get it right for this situation. It must be something like: Village.villageID IN (Bookmark.village.villageID) It isn't possible to get first all the Bookmarks and then loop to get all the Villages, because of the design of the framework. Can this be done in CoreData (I presume the answer is "Yes, of course!") and how?

• How can I traverse a reverse generic relation in a Django template?

  I have the following class that I am using to bookmark items: class BookmarkedItem(models.Model): is_bookmarked = models.BooleanField(default=False) user = models.ForeignKey(User) content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType) object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField() content_object = generic.GenericForeignKey() And I am defining a reverse generic relationship as follows: class Link(models.Model): url = models.URLField() bookmarks = generic.GenericRelation(BookmarkedItem) In one of my views I generate a queryset of all links and add this to a context: links = Link.objects.all() context = { 'links': links } return render_to_response('links.html', context) The problem I am having is how to traverse the generic relationship in my template. For each link I want to be able to check the is_bookmarked attribute and change the add/remove bookmark button according to whether the user already has it bookmarked or not. Is this possible to do in the template? Or do I have to do some additional filtering in the view and pass another queryset?

• Any custom/third party Visual C# text box Controls with extra features?

  I'm writing a program that uses the textbox in visual C# to read a log file. When dealing with very large amounts of text, writing to the textbox is incredibly slow. The textbox also lacks many features. Are there any custom textbox controls that are faster, or even a sort of embedded editor (with ability to highlight certain words, indent, input bookmarks)? Many of the features I want are programmable, but it would be nice if there was a faster textbox or one that already had these features :) Thanks.

• Skip “Next Links” with the PageZipper Bookmarklet

  No matter what browser you use sooner or later you will run across a website with an endless number of “next links” used for the sole purpose of generating page views. Now you can simply scroll through those articles without the “next links” using the PageZipper Bookmarklet. The Problem Here is a perfect example of a page view generating article. As you can see our browser is in a non-maximized state and the first part of the article takes up very little room in the browser window. Absolutely horrible… The PageZipper Bookmarklet in Action The bookmarklet is very easy to set up in your browser…simply drag it to your “Bookmarks Toolbar” and you are ready to go. Switching tabs back to the article we never even needed to refresh the page. One nice little click on our new bookmarklet and… It immediately went to work. When you use PageZipper you will see a page count in the upper right corner of the browser window area as shown here. You can see the transition between pages here…nice and smooth. When using the bookmarklet just keep scrolling down as needed to read the entire article. Six pages of reading condensed into one without having to click a single link. Now that is nice! Conclusion If you despise those irritating “next links” then the PageZipper Bookmarklet will be a perfect addition to your favorite browser. • How to Use and Manage Extensions to Safari 5

  While there have been hacks to include extensions in Safari for some time now, Safari 5 now offers proper support for them. Today we take a look at managing extensions in the latest version of Safari. Installation and Setup Download and install Safari 5 (link below). Make sure to download the installer that doesn’t include QuickTime if you don’t want it. Also, uncheck getting Apple updates and news in your email. Then decide if you want to install Bonjour for Windows and have Safari automatically update or not. Once it’s installed, launch Safari and select Show Menu Bar from the the Settings Menu. Then go into Preferences \ Advanced and check the box Show Develop menu in the menu bar. Develop will now appear on the Menu Bar…click on it and select Enable Extensions. Using Extensions Now you can find and start using extensions (link below) that will work with Safari 5. In this example we’re installing PageSaver which takes an image of what is showing in your browser. Click on the link for the Extension you want to install…   Then you’ll get a confirmation asking if you want to open or save it. Opening it will install it right away. Click Install in the dialog that asks if you’re sure you want to. Here we see the Extension was successfully installed and you can see the camera icon on the Toolbar. When you’re on a portion of a webpage you want to take an image of, click on the camera icon and you’ll have the image saved in your Downloads folder. Then you can open it up in a browser or image editor. Go into Preferences \ Extensions and from here you can turn the extensions on or off, uninstall, or check for updates. If you’re a Safari user, or thinking about trying it, you’ll enjoy proper support for extensions in version 5. • Convert DVDs and ISO Files to MKV with MakeMKV

  Looking for a quick and easy way to convert your DVDs or ISOs to MKV files? Today we take a look at the MakeMKV Beta which gets the job done very well. Installing and Using MakeMKV Download and install MakeMKV (See download link below) If converting a DVD, place it into your optical drive. When you open MakeMKV you will be greeted by it’s minimalistic interface. Click on the DVD to hard drive button to open the DVD, or the folder icon on the top menu to browse for an ISO file.   MakeMKV will open the disc or file. Once the disc or file is opened, you’ll see the titles listed in the window on the left. Double-click on the titles to expand the tree structure.   Remove any title or tracks you don’t want to convert by unselecting the check box to the left. On the right side of the window, click the folder icon to select browse for your file output directory. When ready, click the MakeMkv button to begin the conversion process.   Conversion will proceed.   When the conversion is finished. Click OK. That’s all there is to it! Your MKV file is ready to play. Conclusion MakeMKV is currently still in beta and during the beta phase it will rip both DVD and Blu-ray for free. However, the DVD ripping functionality will always remain free. After 30 days if you want to continue ripping Blu-ray discs, you’ll need to purchase a license. DVD rips are very quick…typically around 15-20 minutes depending on the length of the movie. MakeMKV is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and will rip and convert DVDs to MKV files. Not all media players natively support MKV playback, so if you’re having trouble playing MKV files, try downloading VLC Media player, or the latest version of the DivX codec. The first one was in Swedish… One click and there it is. Notice that there is a “translation bar frame” that will still let you choose yet another language to translate the webpage into if you desire. Definitely a nice touch… Our second example was in Russian. Once again a single click and… The website is now in English. On this particular page the “central green graphic” was affected by the translation and the two sidebar buttons are “pre-made” but that is ok. You can read what you need to without any problems. • How To Disable Individual Plug-ins in Google Chrome

  Have you ever wondered how to disable useless or insecure browser plug-ins in Google Chrome? Here’s the lowdown on how to get rid of Java, Acrobat, Silverlight, and the rest of the plugins you probably want to get rid of. Disabling Plugins in Google Chrome If you head to about:plugins in your address bar, you’ll probably see a list of plugins, but won’t be able to disable them yet. What you’ll need to do is switch over to the Dev channel of Chrome, which gives you access to all the latest features—though you might be warned that sometimes the dev channel might be less stable than the release or beta channels. Ready to proceed? Head to the Dev Channel page, and then click the link to run the installer. You’ll be prompted to restart Chrome when you’re done. Note that Mac and Windows users can both run an installer to switch. Linux users will have to install a package. Note: Once you’ve switched to the Dev channel, you can’t really switch to the stable channel. You’ll have to uninstall Chrome and then reinstall the regular version. Now that you’ve switched to the dev channel and restarted your browser, head to about:plugins in the address bar, and then just disable each plugin you really don’t need. Plugins you can generally live without?  Java, Acrobat, Microsoft Office, Windows Presentation Foundation, Silverlight. These will be on a case-by-case basis, of course, but the vast majority of large websites don’t require any of those. • Turn Chrome’s New Tab Page into an Ubuntu Forums Powerhouse

  There’s a lot of start page plug-ins for Google Chrome, but if you’re an Ubuntu Forums enthusiast, you might be interested in the powerful UbuntuForums.org Start Page extension. Using the Ubuntu Forums Chrome Start Page Once you’ve installed the extension and opened a new tab, you’ll notice quite a difference from the boring default “New Tab Page”. While you may look at this and wonder if what you see is all that there is to it, there’s actually a lot of hidden customization and functionality. The upper left corner is where you will control the content displayed in the “Ubuntu New Tab Page”. The “Buttons Toolbar” that you see at the top lets you shift between the types of content viewed, from RSS feeds to bookmarks and more. This entire set of links provides direct links to the appropriate section in the Ubuntu Forums. As with the set of links pictured above each of these will open in a new tab when clicked on. There’s even a feature to browse wallpapers from DesktopNexus with categories on the left and pictures to the right. If you want to return to the regular layout you should use the “Start Page Link” highlighted here. Options The options will allow you to customize the colors shown in the “Ubuntu New Tab Page” to create a very nice match to your current browser and/or system theme if desired. You can also do some customization to the fonts, “Bookmark Shortcuts”, and populate the “Custom Links Section” in the main page. • Play the Microsoft Game “Are You Certifiable?”

  Want to know if you have what it takes to be certified by Microsoft? Today we check out an enjoyable way to practice and test your IT knowledge of Microsoft products.  There are two modes, one where you log in with your Live account so you can save your progress, and play additional levels.   If you log in with your Live account, it’s obvious that Microsoft wants to sell you some certification courses, so just be aware of that. Or Guest Play where you can only play one episode and scores are not saved.   Playing the Game We’ll take a look at the Guest Play just so you get a sense of what the game is about. Enter in a username and pick an avatar… Then read the instructions…we won’t go over them all here, there are a lot of options and points are scored by correct answers, amount of time it takes to answer them, you get vouchers to play a question before answers are shown…etc. Once you start playing, you get certification questions, you can take as much time to read the question as you want, then hit the Answer button when you’re ready. Now you have four answers to choose from…notice the time clicking down, so you want to try to answer as quickly as possible. After selecting the answer, you’re told if it is correct or not, then given an answer explaination, along with your score. You can flag the topic so it comes up again, which is a good way to get repetition of various topics, which really helps when taking the cert tests. If you get an answer wrong, you still get an answer explanation which is cool, so you can learn and better understand the topic. Conclusion This game is definitely not for everyone, only those who are curious or want a fun way to practice for Microsoft certifications. • A better way to organize your Silverlight Code Snippets.

  I hate re-writing code. I also hate it when I find a great code snippet on the web and forget to bookmark it or it gets lost in my endless sea of bookmarks. So what do you do to get around this? This is the question that I was asking myself at the end of 2010. How can I get my Silverlight code organized? My requirements for a snippet manager were: Needs to be FREE. An easy way to view XAML/C# code behind together in one “view”. I wanted the ability to store the code snippets in cloud in case my HDD dies. Searchable Keywords to quickly find code snippets. I started looking for a snippet manager that would allow me to do just that and finally found Snippet Manager. Before going any further, I think that one of the most important things to note here is that this software supports 37 languages. It’s not just for Silverlight developers nor C# only guys. The software supports Java, SQL and even COBOL.   Below is a screenshot of the Snippet Manager that shows my Silverlight code snippet. You will notice that I have highlighted two sections. The top part is my XAML and the bottom is my C# code behind. I’ve included a sample below of my code snippets so that you can get an idea of how I organized it. Another thing that’s great about this software is that it supports plain text. I added some connection strings in the TEXT section below.  Once you have finished adding your code snippets, you can store them in the cloud. I created a FTP directory called “snippets” on my FTP Server and hit the upload button once I am finished adding my new codes snippets. This will allow me to use the code snippets on another computer with this application on my USB Key. See screenshots below: Enter your FTP credentials below: Hit the Uploads button on the Toolbar: Login in to your FTP Server and verify the following files are now on the FTP Server: Another great feature of the Snippet Manager is that you can also integrate this into VS2010 by clicking Tools –> External Tools: And setting up your External Screen to point to the Executable: You can now launch it by going to Tools –> Snippet Manager. If you want you could also a shortcut to launch the program with HotKeys. As you can see, this is a nice little program that includes everything needed to organize your code snippets very clean. • How does Microsoft Word And Excel Run without any installation?

  I was having a discussion on bookmarks in Word with a friend, and he suggested me to check out his implementation of a query in Word. Since I did not have Microsoft Word installed, I told him I don't have Word so I won't be able to test it. To this, he mentioned that he'll send the executables and it will work - I argued that without an installation this will fail. I was rather shocked when he sent me the standalone executables and on running them, Word actually launched and I was able to use almost every functionality o_0 How's this possible? I've never installed Microsoft Office on my system, this isn't any "portable" app or VMWare ThinStall ( thanks nhinkle, didn't know about this). There are absolutely no Microsoft Office related files - except for winword.exe and excel.exe. Curiously even Microsoft Excel works fine with just the standalone executable. winword.exe size is about 38 MB, and excel.exe size is just 35kb, which makes it even more strange. • How do Opera's keyboard shortcut settings work?

  Firefox 4 beta is starting to freeze up the way Firefox 3 used to on my machine, and I want a browser that'll play gifs at full speed, so on a Mac my only other choice seems to be Opera. There are just two issues I have with it right now: one, the scrolling is weird compared to every other Mac application, but I can get used to that if there's no way to fix it. Two, cmd-1 through cmd-9 activate the "speed dial" bookmarks instead of selecting tabs 1-9, like in Firefox and Chrome. I can disable those shortcuts easily enough, so I don't keep accidentally loading a different page when I instinctively try to do that, but in an ideal world I could remap those commands to do what I want. The keyboard shortcut editor is weird: There seems to be a scrappy little language for associating actions with commands. It has some limited autocompletion when you type stuff in, and I couldn't find a "select specific tab" action, but some of the existing commands are complicated enough that I'd be surprised if there's not a way to do it. Is there documentation for this language anywhere? Clicking "help" just brings me to this page, which is not very helpful.

• Safari's location bar (auto-suggest and web search)

  Auto-suggest don't seem to work for queries with spaces. Am I missing something? If you select an item from the suggestion list that was matched by its title, the title is filled in before the address. Can you change it to work like in other browsers? SMRT disables searching by title completely. Can you combine Top Hit, History and Bookmarks into a single section? The preferences starting with DebugSafari4 don't work anymore. (Like DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList.) Can you direct unresolved addresses to something like google.com/search?q=?&btnI instead of ?.com? Like by changing keyword.URL in Firefox. Can you remove or hide the web search field? In Camino, Cruz and Fluid it can be resized to zero width. You can't circumvent the normal maximum ratio with InputFieldWidthRatio. AddressBarIncludesGoogle doesn't appear do anything in the current version. Are there fixes or workarounds to any of these? I'm lumping these issues together, because they are closely related — a lot of them were introduced when the location bar was redesigned in Safari 5. I'm also hoping to find something like an extension or a plugin that would replace the standard location bar.

• Get rid of gray brackets arond editable text in restricted Word docs

  I'm trying to work out a problem in Word that I thought was simply a glitch from 2003 until we upgraded to 2010 and the problem persisted. For our corporate letterhead, we set up the template with placeholder text, highlight the text, and then make the document read-only with the exception of the selected text. The editable text turns yellow and gains these brackets around them: Once these brackets appear, they'll always show on the screen. That I can handle, though I'd like to learn how to hide them on-screen if that's possible. When the document is printed while protected, it works fine. When the document is printed while NOT protected, part of the bracket shows up on the paper! I guess the ultimate question is, how can I get rid of the brackets altogether? I can see why they exist but in my use case they create more problems than they solve. I'd like someone to be able to read the doc without seeing brackets, and I'd like other people in my department to be able to print without having to re-restrict it first. I tried to turn off bookmarks because that's what seemed to come up when I searched around, but that didn't do anything.
