• How do I get syncdb db_table and app_label to play nicely together

- by Chris Heisel
I've got a model that looks something like this: class HeiselFoo(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=250) class Meta: """ Meta """ app_label = "Foos" db_table = u"medley_heiselfoo_heiselfoo" And whenever I run my test suite, I get an error because Django isn't creating the tables for that model. It appears to be an interaction between app_label and db_table -- as the test suite runs normally if db_table is set, but app_label isn't. Here's a link to the full source code: http://github.com/cmheisel/heiselfoo Here's the traceback from the test suite: E ====================================================================== ERROR: test_truth (heiselfoo.tests.HeiselFooTests) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Traceback (most recent call last): File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/heiselfoo/tests.py", line 10, in test_truth f.save() File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/models/base.py", line 434, in save self.save_base(using=using, force_insert=force_insert, force_update=force_update) File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/models/base.py", line 527, in save_base result = manager._insert(values, return_id=update_pk, using=using) File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/models/manager.py", line 195, in _insert return insert_query(self.model, values, **kwargs) File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/models/query.py", line 1479, in insert_query return query.get_compiler(using=using).execute_sql(return_id) File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/models/sql/compiler.py", line 783, in execute_sql cursor = super(SQLInsertCompiler, self).execute_sql(None) File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/models/sql/compiler.py", line 727, in execute_sql cursor.execute(sql, params) File "/Users/chris/Code/heiselfoo/ve/lib/python2.6/site-packages/django/db/backends/sqlite3/base.py", line 200, in execute return Database.Cursor.execute(self, query, params) DatabaseError: no such table: medley_heiselfoo_heiselfoo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ran 1 test in 0.004s FAILED (errors=1) Creating test database 'default'... • pppd disconnects from 3G, doesn't reconnect, w/ persist set

- by bytenik
I am trying to configure pppd to connect to a 3G network (Sprint, in this case) and then stay connected, reconnecting automatically if the remote connection is terminated. I have enabled the persist option. My configuration file is as follows: hide-password noauth connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/cellular" debug /dev/cell 921600 defaultroute noipdefault user " " persist maxfail 0 lcp-echo-failure 10 lcp-echo-interval 60 holdoff 5 However, when the peer disconnects the connection, pppd often waits a long time (substantially more than my holdoff) to reconnect the modem -- if it ever reconnects at all! An example log showing this: May 23 05:17:24 00270e0a8888 pppd[2408]: rcvd [LCP TermReq id=0x26] May 23 05:17:24 00270e0a8888 pppd[2408]: LCP terminated by peer May 23 05:17:24 00270e0a8888 pppd[2408]: Connect time 60.1 minutes. May 23 06:08:10 00270e0a8888 pppd[2500]: using channel 11 The disconnect at the request of the peer occurs at 5:17, but the reconnect didn't happen until 6:08. I had a friend monitoring the server so I'm not certain that this wasn't a manual reconnection. Either way, it either took almost an hour to reconnect or never reconnected. Shouldn't persist + holdoff 5 cause this to automatically reconnect after 5 seconds of the link terminating?

• Wildcards not being substituted

- by user21463
#!/bin/bash loc=`echo ~/.gvfs/*/DCIM/100_FUJI` rm -f /mnt/fujifilmA100 ln -s "$loc" /mnt/fujifilmA100 For some reason the variable * doesn't get substituted with the only possible value and gets given the value /home/chris/.gvfs/*/DCIM/100_FUJI. Does anyone have an idea of why? Please note: If global expansion fails, the pattern is not substituted. I ran the commands: chris@comp2008:~$ loc=`echo ~/.gvfs/*/DCIM/100_FUJI ` chris@comp2008:~$ echo $loc /home/chris/.gvfs/gphoto2 mount on usb%3A001,008/DCIM/100_FUJI So we can see the expansion should work I have now switched to using: loc = `find ~/.gvfs -name 100_FUJI ` I am just curious why it doesn't work as is. Debugging output using sh -x echo /home/chris/.gvfs/*/DCIM/100_FUJI loc=/home/chris/.gvfs/*/DCIM/100_FUJI rm -f /mnt/fujifilmA100 ln -s /home/chris/.gvfs/*/DCIM/100_FUJI/mnt/fujifilmA100

• May I use full-texted feed for my News Reader app?

- by Mahdi Ghiasi
I'm creating a news reader app. (Users will choose sources, but not the exact feed addresses. for example, they can choose Gizmodo but they will not see the exact url of Gizmodo's feed) Some of sources are giving partial feeds, and user must go to their website to read the complete article. My question is, May I make a fulltext version of their feed (for example, using this service) and use it instead of their feed in my News reader categories? Am I legally/ethically allowed to do this? What about using some other service like Readability? (Readability gives HTML page instead of feed as input, but anyway, output will be clean article without any advertises or such) Please note that some of these partial feeds may have some advertises inside, but the fulltext feed generators usually remove that advertises.

• Ruby 1.9.2 and ruby-debug19 "undefined symbol: ruby_current_thread "

- by Chris McCauley
Hi, I'm getting the following error while trying to require 'ruby-debug' /home/chris/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-preview1/gems/ruby-debug-base19-0.11.23/lib/ruby_debug.so: /home/chris/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-preview1/gems/ruby-debug-base19-0.11.23/lib/ruby_debug.so: undefined symbol: ruby_current_thread - /home/chris/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-preview1/gems/ruby-debug-base19-0.11.23/lib/ruby_debug.so (LoadError) from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' from /home/chris/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-preview1/gems/ruby-debug-base19-0.11.23/lib/ruby-debug-base.rb:1 from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /home/chris/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-preview1/gems/ruby-debug19-0.11.6/cli/ruby-debug.rb:5 from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `gem_original_require' from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' from ./bin/debug:5 I'm using ruby 1.9.2dev (2009-07-18 trunk 24186) [i686-linux] via rvm and the ruby-debug19 gem installed ok. • Clonezilla restore from Samba - no 'restoredisk' option

- by MT_Head
I used a CloneZilla LiveCD to back up a couple of Windows machines to a Samba share. Now I'm trying to restore those images, and CloneZilla won't even give me the 'restoredisk' or 'restorepart' options on the menu. I'm guessing that this is because CZ isn't recognizing a valid image... but why? Here's a listing of the folder on the Samba share: -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 319 May 31 03:45 blkdev.list -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 5307 May 31 04:41 clonezilla-img -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 4 May 31 04:31 disk -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 16091 May 31 04:31 Info-dmi.txt -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 11029 May 31 04:31 Info-lshw.txt -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 1502 May 31 04:31 Info-lspci.txt -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 170 May 31 04:31 Info-packages.txt -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 80 May 31 04:41 Info-saved-by-cmd.txt -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 10 May 31 04:31 parts -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 2097152000 May 31 04:06 sda1.ntfs-ptcl-img.gz.aa -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 247361656 May 31 04:08 sda1.ntfs-ptcl-img.gz.ab -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 823182034 May 31 04:31 sda2.ntfs-ptcl-img.gz.aa -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 36 May 31 03:45 sda-chs.sf -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 31744 May 31 03:45 sda-hidden-data-after-mbr -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 512 May 31 03:45 sda-mbr -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 315 May 31 03:45 sda-pt.parted -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 285 May 31 03:45 sda-pt.parted.compact -rwxrwxrwx 1 marc users 259 May 31 03:45 sda-pt.sf (I've been experimenting with various permissions trying to get this to work; that's why they're currently all "rwxrwxrwx"...) I've got my CZ LiveCD stuck in a (different) machine with a 160GB SATA disk that I'm fine with overwriting; although CZ doesn't show a directory listing, it does show that the correct folder is mounted as /home/partimag. But a moment later, after selecting either Beginner or Expert, I'm only presented with the "savedisk", "saveparts", and "exit" options. What am I doing wrong? I am confident that the initial backup was successful; I can post the log if desired, or any other information that might be germane. Edit: I've copied the contents of the folder onto a 16GB USB stick and set THAT as /home/partimag. Still nothing. What the hell is CZ looking for?

• Why don't mails show up in the recipient's mailspool?

- by Jason
I have postfix dovecot running with local email system on thunderbird. I have two users on by ubuntu, mailuser 1 and mailuser 2 whom i added to thunderbird. Everything went fine, except the users dont have anything on their inbox on thunderbird and sent mails dont get through. Im using maildir as well. Checking /var/log/mail.log reveals this This what is happining: Restarting postfix and dovecot and then sending mail from one user to another user... • What could have caused a large traffic drop from Google in early May?

- by Scott Schluer
I have a website (www.equispot.com) that has been indexed for almost 2 years in Google. I managed to get myself on the first page (average position 6-8) on Google for my target keyword of "horses for sale" and held there pretty solidly for months. Suddenly, with no changes to the site, traffic from Google dropped like a rock in early May. I slowly fell in position until now I'm sitting at the bottom of page 4. I have never hired an SEO firm, have not used any "black hat" techniques that Google would have penalized me for in their May update, etc. I'm not familiar enough with SEO to know how to look at link profiles, etc. to tell if there's something wrong. I've run my site through a DNS checker and it came back with no errors. Google Webmaster Tools shows no messages or notices of any kind, just a drop in traffic. GWT also shows only 2 server errors and 1 404. Is there anyone who can tell me by quickly checking my domain if there's an obvious reason that my traffic would have fallen so far, something that I can fix?

• More CPU cores may not always lead to better performance – MAXDOP and query memory distribution in spotlight

- by sqlworkshops
More hardware normally delivers better performance, but there are exceptions where it can hinder performance. Understanding these exceptions and working around it is a major part of SQL Server performance tuning. When a memory allocating query executes in parallel, SQL Server distributes memory to each task that is executing part of the query in parallel. In our example the sort operator that executes in parallel divides the memory across all tasks assuming even distribution of rows. Common memory allocating queries are that perform Sort and do Hash Match operations like Hash Join or Hash Aggregation or Hash Union. In reality, how often are column values evenly distributed, think about an example; are employees working for your company distributed evenly across all the Zip codes or mainly concentrated in the headquarters? What happens when you sort result set based on Zip codes? Do all products in the catalog sell equally or are few products hot selling items? One of my customers tested the below example on a 24 core server with various MAXDOP settings and here are the results:MAXDOP 1: CPU time = 1185 ms, elapsed time = 1188 msMAXDOP 4: CPU time = 1981 ms, elapsed time = 1568 msMAXDOP 8: CPU time = 1918 ms, elapsed time = 1619 msMAXDOP 12: CPU time = 2367 ms, elapsed time = 2258 msMAXDOP 16: CPU time = 2540 ms, elapsed time = 2579 msMAXDOP 20: CPU time = 2470 ms, elapsed time = 2534 msMAXDOP 0: CPU time = 2809 ms, elapsed time = 2721 ms - all 24 cores. In the above test, when the data was evenly distributed, the elapsed time of parallel query was always lower than serial query. Why does the query get slower and slower with more CPU cores / higher MAXDOP? Maybe you can answer this question after reading the article; let me know: [email protected]. Well you get the point, let’s see an example. The best way to learn is to practice. To create the below tables and reproduce the behavior, join the mailing list by using this link: www.sqlworkshops.com/ml and I will send you the table creation script. Let’s update the Employees table with 49 out of 50 employees located in Zip code 2001. update Employees set Zip = EmployeeID / 400 + 1 where EmployeeID % 50 = 1 update Employees set Zip = 2001 where EmployeeID % 50 != 1 go update statistics Employees with fullscan go Let’s create the temporary table #FireDrill with all possible Zip codes. drop table #FireDrill go create table #FireDrill (Zip int primary key) insert into #FireDrill select distinct Zip from Employees update statistics #FireDrill with fullscan go Let’s execute the query serially with MAXDOP 1. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --First serially with MAXDOP 1 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 1) goThe query took 1011 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 77816 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 799624. No Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. Now let’s execute the query in parallel with MAXDOP 0. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --In parallel with MAXDOP 0 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 0) go The query took 1912 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 79360 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 799624. The estimated number of rows between serial and parallel plan are the same. The parallel plan has slightly more memory granted due to additional overhead. Sort properties shows the rows are unevenly distributed over the 4 threads. Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. Intermediate Summary: The reason for the higher duration with parallel plan was sort spill. This is due to uneven distribution of employees over Zip codes, especially concentration of 49 out of 50 employees in Zip code 2001. Now let’s update the Employees table and distribute employees evenly across all Zip codes. update Employees set Zip = EmployeeID / 400 + 1 go update statistics Employees with fullscan go Let’s execute the query serially with MAXDOP 1. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --Serially with MAXDOP 1 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 1) go The query took 751 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 77816 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 784707. No Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. Now let’s execute the query in parallel with MAXDOP 0. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --In parallel with MAXDOP 0 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 0) go The query took 661 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 79360 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 784707. Sort properties shows the rows are evenly distributed over the 4 threads. No Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. Intermediate Summary: When employees were distributed unevenly, concentrated on 1 Zip code, parallel sort spilled while serial sort performed well without spilling to tempdb. When the employees were distributed evenly across all Zip codes, parallel sort and serial sort did not spill to tempdb. This shows uneven data distribution may affect the performance of some parallel queries negatively. For detailed discussion of memory allocation, refer to webcasts available at www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts. Some of you might conclude from the above execution times that parallel query is not faster even when there is no spill. Below you can see when we are joining limited amount of Zip codes, parallel query will be fasted since it can use Bitmap Filtering. Let’s update the Employees table with 49 out of 50 employees located in Zip code 2001. update Employees set Zip = EmployeeID / 400 + 1 where EmployeeID % 50 = 1 update Employees set Zip = 2001 where EmployeeID % 50 != 1 go update statistics Employees with fullscan go Let’s create the temporary table #FireDrill with limited Zip codes. drop table #FireDrill go create table #FireDrill (Zip int primary key) insert into #FireDrill select distinct Zip from Employees where Zip between 1800 and 2001 update statistics #FireDrill with fullscan go Let’s execute the query serially with MAXDOP 1. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --Serially with MAXDOP 1 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 1) go The query took 989 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 77816 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 785594. No Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. Now let’s execute the query in parallel with MAXDOP 0. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --In parallel with MAXDOP 0 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 0) go The query took 1799 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 79360 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 785594. Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. The estimated number of rows between serial and parallel plan are the same. The parallel plan has slightly more memory granted due to additional overhead. Intermediate Summary: The reason for the higher duration with parallel plan even with limited amount of Zip codes was sort spill. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --Serially with MAXDOP 1 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 1) go The query took 250 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 9016 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 79973.8. No Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. Now let’s execute the query in parallel with MAXDOP 0. --Example provided by www.sqlworkshops.com --Execute query with uneven Zip code distribution --In parallel with MAXDOP 0 set statistics time on go declare @EmployeeID int, @EmployeeName varchar(48),@zip int select @EmployeeName = e.EmployeeName, @zip = e.Zip from Employees e inner join #FireDrill fd on (e.Zip = fd.Zip) order by e.Zip option (maxdop 0) go The query took 85 ms to complete. The execution plan shows the 13152 KB of memory was granted while the estimated rows were 784707. No Sort Warnings in SQL Server Profiler. Here you see, parallel query is much faster than serial query since SQL Server is using Bitmap Filtering to eliminate rows before the hash join. Parallel queries are very good for performance, but in some cases it can hinder performance. If one identifies the reason for these hindrances, then it is possible to get the best out of parallelism. I covered many aspects of monitoring and tuning parallel queries in webcasts (www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts) and articles (www.sqlworkshops.com/articles). I suggest you to watch the webcasts and read the articles to better understand how to identify and tune parallel query performance issues. Summary: One has to avoid sort spill over tempdb and the chances of spills are higher when a query executes in parallel with uneven data distribution. Parallel query brings its own advantage, reduced elapsed time and reduced work with Bitmap Filtering. So it is important to understand how to avoid spills over tempdb and when to execute a query in parallel. I explain these concepts with detailed examples in my webcasts (www.sqlworkshops.com/webcasts), I recommend you to watch them. The best way to learn is to practice. To create the above tables and reproduce the behavior, join the mailing list at www.sqlworkshops.com/ml and I will send you the relevant SQL Scripts. Register for the upcoming 3 Day Level 400 Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005 Performance Monitoring & Tuning Hands-on Workshop in London, United Kingdom during March 15-17, 2011, click here to register / Microsoft UK TechNet.These are hands-on workshops with a maximum of 12 participants and not lectures. • When may I ask a question to fellow developers? (Rules before asking questions).

- by Zwei Steinen
I assigned a quite simple task to one junior developer today, and he kept pinging me EVERY 5 minutes for HOURS, asking STEP BY STEP, what to do. Whenever something went wrong, he simply copy&pasted the log and basically wrote, "An exception occurred. What should I do?" So I finally had to tell him, "If you want to be a developer, please start thinking a little bit. Read the error message. That's what they are for!". I also however, tell junior developers to ask questions before spending too much time trying to solve it themselves. This might sound contradictory, but I feel there is some kind of an implicit rule that distinguishes questions that should be asked fairly quickly and that should not (and I try to follow those rules when I ask questions..) So my question is, do you have any rules that you follow, or expect others to follow on asking questions? If so, what are they? Let me start with my own. If you have struggled for more than 90 min, you may ask that question (exceptions exists). If you haven't struggled for more than 15 min, you may not ask that question (if you are sure that the answer can not be found within 15 min, this rule does not have to apply). If it is completely out of your domain and you do not plan to learn that domain, you may ask that question after 15 min (e.g. if I am a java programmer and need to back up the DB, I may ask the DBA what procedure to follow after googling for 15 min). If it is a "local" question, whose answer is difficult to derive or for which resources is difficult to get (e.g. asking an colleague "what method xxx does" etc.), you may ask that question after 15 min. If the answer for it is difficult to derive, and you know that the other person knows the answer, you may ask the question after 15 min (e.g. asking a hibernate expert "What do I need to change else to make this work?". If the process to derive the answer is interesting and is a good learning opportunity, you may ask for hints but you may not ask for answers! What are your rules?

• How to Tell If Your Computer is Overheating and What to Do About It

- by Chris Hoffman
Heat is a computer’s enemy. Computers are designed with heat dispersion and ventilation in mind so they don’t overheat. If too much heat builds up, your computer may become unstable or suddenly shut down. The CPU and graphics card produce much more heat when running demanding applications. If there’s a problem with your computer’s cooling system, an excess of heat could even physically damage its components. Is Your Computer Overheating? When using a typical computer in a typical way, you shouldn’t have to worry about overheating at all. However, if you’re encountering system instability issues like abrupt shut downs, blue screens, and freezes — especially while doing something demanding like playing PC games or encoding video — your computer may be overheating. This can happen for several reasons. Your computer’s case may be full of dust, a fan may have failed, something may be blocking your computer’s vents, or you may have a compact laptop that was never designed to run at maximum performance for hours on end. Monitoring Your Computer’s Temperature First, bear in mind that different CPUs and GPUs (graphics cards) have different optimal temperature ranges. Before getting too worried about a temperature, be sure to check your computer’s documentation — or its CPU or graphics card specifications — and ensure you know the temperature ranges your hardware can handle. You can monitor your computer’s temperatures in a variety of different ways. First, you may have a way to monitor temperature that is already built into your system. You can often view temperature values in your computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings screen. This allows you to quickly see your computer’s temperature if Windows freezes or blue screens on you — just boot the computer, enter the BIOS or UEFI screen, and check the temperatures displayed there. Note that not all BIOSes or UEFI screens will display this information, but it is very common. There are also programs that will display your computer’s temperature. Such programs just read the sensors inside your computer and show you the temperature value they report, so there are a wide variety of tools you can use for this, from the simple Speccy system information utility to an advanced tool like SpeedFan. HWMonitor also offer this feature, displaying a wide variety of sensor information. Be sure to look at your CPU and graphics card temperatures. You can also find other temperatures, such as the temperature of your hard drive, but these components will generally only overheat if it becomes extremely hot in the computer’s case. They shouldn’t generate too much heat on their own. If you think your computer may be overheating, don’t just glance as these sensors once and ignore them. Do something demanding with your computer, such as running a CPU burn-in test with Prime 95, playing a PC game, or running a graphical benchmark. Monitor the computer’s temperature while you do this, even checking a few hours later — does any component overheat after you push it hard for a while? Preventing Your Computer From Overheating If your computer is overheating, here are some things you can do about it: Dust Out Your Computer’s Case: Dust accumulates in desktop PC cases and even laptops over time, clogging fans and blocking air flow. This dust can cause ventilation problems, trapping heat and preventing your PC from cooling itself properly. Be sure to clean your computer’s case occasionally to prevent dust build-up. Unfortunately, it’s often more difficult to dust out overheating laptops. Ensure Proper Ventilation: Put the computer in a location where it can properly ventilate itself. If it’s a desktop, don’t push the case up against a wall so that the computer’s vents become blocked or leave it near a radiator or heating vent. If it’s a laptop, be careful to not block its air vents, particularly when doing something demanding. For example, putting a laptop down on a mattress, allowing it to sink in, and leaving it there can lead to overheating — especially if the laptop is doing something demanding and generating heat it can’t get rid of. Check if Fans Are Running: If you’re not sure why your computer started overheating, open its case and check that all the fans are running. It’s possible that a CPU, graphics card, or case fan failed or became unplugged, reducing air flow. Tune Up Heat Sinks: If your CPU is overheating, its heat sink may not be seated correctly or its thermal paste may be old. You may need to remove the heat sink and re-apply new thermal paste before reseating the heat sink properly. This tip applies more to tweakers, overclockers, and people who build their own PCs, especially if they may have made a mistake when originally applying the thermal paste. This is often much more difficult when it comes to laptops, which generally aren’t designed to be user-serviceable. That can lead to trouble if the laptop becomes filled with dust and needs to be cleaned out, especially if the laptop was never designed to be opened by users at all. Consult our guide to diagnosing and fixing an overheating laptop for help with cooling down a hot laptop. Overheating is a definite danger when overclocking your CPU or graphics card. Overclocking will cause your components to run hotter, and the additional heat will cause problems unless you can properly cool your components. If you’ve overclocked your hardware and it has started to overheat — well, throttle back the overclock! Image Credit: Vinni Malek on Flickr

• DRBD not syncing between my nodes when IP is reset

- by ramdaz
I am trying to setup DRBD by following the article at http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-network-raid1-with-drbd-on-ubuntu-11.10-p2 I am using Ubuntu 10.04 DRBD - 8.3.11 In the first run I had everything working perfectly and when shifting the systems to a production environment I decided to restart the Meta Data creation part and start from scratch. • How to set up spf records to send mail from google hosted apps to gmail addresses

- by Chris Adams
Hi there, I'm trying to work out why email I send from one domain I own is rejected by another that I own, and while I think it may be related to how I've setup spf records, I'm not sure what steps I need to take to fix it. Here's the error message I receive: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550-Verification failed for <[email protected]> 550-No Such User Here 550 Sender verify failed (state 14). • They may block off Howard Street—but Oracle OpenWorld is a two-way street.

- by Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 by Jim Lein, Sr. Director, Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies “Engineered to Inform and Inspire”—that’s the theme of Oracle OpenWorld 2012. In early October, tens of thousands of attendees will descend on the streets of San Francisco because they share one thing in common: the desire to learn more about Oracle. You might think that’s the way we, Oracle employees, look at this event—as just another opportunity for attendees to learn about what we do. But it’s really a two way street. Every year I’m amazed by how informed and inspired I am by our customers and their companies. Midsize companies buy Oracle to grow. As part of the Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies team I get to talk with our partners and business leaders at growing companies almost every day, usually via phone. Oracle OpenWorld presents the perfect opportunity to meet some of them in person, in an informal setting, and in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The stories our customers tell me about their businesses provide vivid examples of how they have overcome the challenges of managing increasingly complex global operations and growing during uncertain economic conditions. It’s no secret that my favorite session at Oracle OpenWorld (besides Larry Ellison’s keynotes and the Customer Appreciation Event, of course) is the Oracle Accelerate Customer Panel. This year we’re featuring executives from three companies who deployed Oracle ERP rapidly to support their company’s growth: Chris Powell, VP and Corporate Controller of Beats by Dr. Dre, a California based designer and manufacturer of premium headphones (sorry, no free samples), Iñaki Zuazo, CIO of Industrias Juno, a building materials provider based in Spain, Kamran Moosa, Project Coordinator for Spartan Engineering, a provider of engineering and construction support services for an LPG storage project in Texas, and That’s a pretty diverse lineup and it will be interesting to hear the perspectives of both IT and financial project stakeholders. The session, “Oracle Accelerate Customer Case Studies: Rapid Deployment of Oracle Applications”, is at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, October 3, in the Concert room at the Palace Hotel. Oracle loves our hometown of San Francisco and it’s a great place to host Oracle OpenWorld. It’s now San Francisco’s largest conference and the city closes off Howard Street to better accommodate the attendees. Some Bay Area commuters may be inconvenienced for a few days by this closure but the conference brings about $100 million into the local economy. Now that’s a two-way street. • Save the dates – Tech.Days 2011 23rd to 25th of May in London

- by Eric Nelson
In May Microsoft UK (and specifically my group) will be delivering Tech.Days – a week of day long technical events plus evening activities. We will be covering Windows Phone 7, Silverlight, IE 9, Windows Azure Platform and more. I’m working right now on the details of what we will be covering around the Windows Azure Platform – and it is shaping up very nicely. There is a little more detail over on TechNet – but for the moment, keep the dates clear if you can. P.S. I think the above is called a “teaser” in marketing speak.

• How To Initialize Object Which May Be Used In Catch Clause?

- by Onorio Catenacci
I've seen this sort of pattern in code before: //pseudo C# code var exInfo = null; //Line A try { var p = SomeProperty; //Line B exInfo = new ExceptionMessage("The property was " + p); //Line C } catch(Exception ex) { exInfo.SomeOtherProperty = SomeOtherValue; //Line D } Usually the code is structured in this fashion because exInfo has to be visible outside of the try clause. The problem is that if an exception occurs on Line B, then exInfo will be null at Line D. The issue arises when something happens on Line B that must occur before exInfo is constructed. But if I set exInfo to a new Object at line A then memory may get leaked at Line C (due to "new"-ing the object there). Is there a better pattern for handling this sort of code? Is there a name for this sort of initialization pattern? By the way I know I could check for exInfo == null before line D but that seems a bit clumsy and I'm looking for a better approach.
