  • Why won't my Western Digital My Book Home 500GB drive mount on my Macbook Pro via Firewire?

    I can connect the drive via USB and it mounts correctly. However, when I connect via FireWire, the drive powers down. The drive realizes that it is plugged in. When I plug in via FireWire, the lights on the front of the drive flash the same as when it it mounting via USB, but then the drive powers down. I've upgraded the firmware on the drive, but it still won't mount via FireWire.

    I tried to import mini DV films from my old video camera VP-D353 and it's not reconised by my lubuntu.( 12.04 ) I tried "DVGRAB" which should work but it doesn't.   • Western Digital HDD now freezes my BIOS when loading the video card!

    After I have successively and successfully installed 3 Windows XP's on the same partition (Don't ask why...), I restarted my computer again and the BIOS just froze when it loaded the video card. Together with my uncle, we tracked down the problem and found out it's the HDD's fault. We tried booting without the HDD and it worked! (No other HDD (I have only one) but with a Ubuntu Live CD in.) We tried the HDD with a different data bus (It was from an identical computer) but that one didn't let my BIOS recognize the HDD. We also put the HDD in another computer as the second HDD and it DID recognize it but Windows XP kept saying it cannot install a driver and that it installed successfully. Happily, I have managed to backup some of my most important files in that other computer. The following is a list of tests that we have run. With the HDD Original data bus Original computer Result: BIOS freezes WITHOUT the HDD Original data bus Original computer Result: Everything works just fine! With the HDD ANOTHER data bus Original computer Result: Cannot see the HDD With the HDD Original data bus ANOTHER computer Result: It worked! With the HDD ANOTHER data bus ANOTHER computer Result: It worked! During the tests, we had only two data buses and two computers. (each data bus from it's own computer) Strange thing is that the second data bus cannot let the BIOS see the HDD in my computer but works just fine with the other computer. I beg you to help me! I have my most important data on that HDD and I really cannot afford to buy another decent IDE HDD now!

Lately I have been trying to evaluate the way I handle everything besides writing code and picking nice colors etc. I am trying to come up with a decent contract which keeps me safe and makes sure I get paid and so on. I would like to hear from more experienced people how they handle clients. How do you agree on what is supposed to be delivered? Is it a good idea to make sure you get paid say 30% before doing any work at all? Any other helpful tips or routines you can think of are of course gratefully appreciated.

    Just got a "Trust" webcam, which gets recognized on my Ubuntu Lucid. It has a built in microphone - which also gets recognized - however, I cannot really get it to act as the system microphone input? Here are some screenshots of what is shown by gnome-volume-control: The default window shows Trust webcam - which has two profiles: "Analog Mono Input" and "Off" - of course, I have it on "Analog Mono Input": However, on the "Input" tab - there is no matching "device for sound input" - neither a matching connector: Then I installed pavucontrol - but that doesn't show that much more; it tells first that gnome-volume-control reads from "Internal Audio Analog Stereo": Then in "Input devices" tab, there is again nothing resembling the mic input from webcam: Finally, under "Configuration" tab, the "Trust" webcam shows, but even if its profile is on "Analog Mono Input", nothing much happens:   So, does anyone know how I could get this webcam microphone to be recognized as the system input?     I'm not sure where to look to find this information, but I'd like to know how to get mouse input (or any hid input) using the fewest non standard libraries in c. Basically, is there an stdio equivalent for mouse (and other input) input in c? Or is there a library that is minimal and cross compatible on multiple platforms. Just being able to print mouse coordinates to a terminal window would be enough.

    Hello everyone, I am new to Linux. And I am using Red Hat Enterprise Version 5. There is a ruby program which use standard input as its input (e.g. the Ruby program process input from standard input). I think standard input should be keyboard, correct? So, I think other kinds of input (non-standard input) should not work (i.e. the ruby program should not be able to read input from such non-standard input), but actually I have tried using pipe works, I am so confused because I think pipe should be some other kinds of input -- other than standard input, why it could work? i.e. put text "123" in abc.txt with pipe, could achieve the same result as using keyboard as input to type "123" for the ruby program. Here is the sample which works and makes me confused, cat abc.txt | ~/test/rubysrc/foo.rb thanks in advance, George

    I want to be helpful to the users of a system, so I'll clean up the input a bit before testing if it can be used. So I have a flow like this: Input: aa12345b Clean input somehow: 12345 Test if clean input is valid Use input if valid Now I want to do this in a beautiful OO-fashion (IoC, interfaces, testable, no statics, you know). Any ideas how to organize a class structure for this? Is it good to have a Cleaner and a Parser/Validator class separately, or put them as methods in the data class itself?   • mythbuntu 12 - lirc device doesn't appear to even exist

    I'm trying to get a new installation of Mythbuntu working. So far, everything is OK except the remote. The sensor for the remote is on my Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1250. Any suggestions on how to fix or further diagnose this?

  • What are the benefits of designing a KeyBinding relay?

    The input system of Quake3 is handled using a Keybinding relay, whereby each keypress is matched against a 'binding' which is then passed to the CLI along with a time stamp of when the keypress (or release) occurred. I just wanted to get an idea from developers what they considered to be the key benefits of designing your input system around this approach? One thing i don't particularly like is the appending of the timestamp to the bound command. This seems like a bit of a hack to bend the CLI into handling the games input? Also I feel that detecting the keypress only to add the command to a stream of text that gets parsed at a later date to be a slightly latent way of responding to input? (or is this unfounded?) The only real benefit i can see is that it allows you to bind 'complex' commands to keypresses; like 'switch weapon;+fire;' for example. Or maybe for journaling purposes? Thanks for any insights!

  • Broken Creative DTT3500 Digital

    Hello, many years ago I bought a Creative DTT3500 Digital surround speakers system. It's been a while since my home theatre started behaving strange. During the past 6 months, I have noticed that the amplifier needed some time before correctly playing digital audio. Until a couple of weeks ago, it needed up to 5 minutes of very noisy "warm up" before playing an "almost" clear audio. Today, I found that even using the analog input (completely disabling digital inputs) the noise persists. Powering off and on the speakers doesn't work. Now, it's reasonable that after almost 10 years, the amplifier got broken. My problem is that I can't simply replace the speakers with another kit from another brand, since 2 speakers in my room are placed in the back wall, with coaxial cables going under the floor but not completely inside a single tube. I mean, I have coaxial extension cables starting from the DTT3500 amplifier, going into the wall, then under the floor in a plastic cable tube, then exiting the tube (still under the floor), connecting to the male coaxial connector of the original cable supplied by Creative, and continuing up to the point close to my bed where the speakers are. I could replace the speakers **only as soon as the new speakers have the same coaxial to bi-polar cables that Creative ships with DTT3500 Another option might be "repairing the amplifier", but I don't know if it's feasible, what should I or a technician look for in the amplifier, and how much would it cost (is it worth to repair or buy a new kit considering the problem above? What do you suggest me to do, basing on the above observation? Thank you.

  • How would I structure the loop to go through inputs?

    I am attempting to make a loop that will go through an array structured like this: $input[n][checked] $input[n][input] The 2nd input acts as a price multiplier, but doesn't have to exist (field can be blank). I don't think a foreach loop is right because I don't think it handles the inputs from the form in the correct dimensional array order to keep the information together. I have inputs on a form that look like this: <input type="checkbox" name="measure[<?php echo $item->id; ?>][checked]" value="<?php echo $item->id; ?>"> <input class="item_mult" type="text" name="measure[<?php echo $item->id; ?>][input]" /> I am attempting to make the loop go through and act as a multiplier on the input relative to its sibling field.   • Sound problems in Windows 7

    hi! I hope I reached the correct forum for this question. I have a media computer with a third party audio card (Soundblaster audigy SE) I use a coaxial digital audio cable connected to a Onkyo TX SR508. if I use normal audio, the sound seems very low, I have to set volume atleast to 62 in my amplifier to hear anything, however if I set digital SPDIF I have no means of controlling the audio volume from the PC (only from the amplifier) and this can be nasty if I toggle between movies that uses Digital AC3/THX and movies wihtouth, if I look at movies capable of AC3 the volume gets VERY loud if amp is set to 62, 32 is more than enough volume when using passthrough. so this bothers me is how can I get the same amount of volume with or without digital output? I tried also other soundcards, internal red light Digital audio cable... if I connect to my television I get ok sound on any sound source via HDMI... help :)

Start by opening the code in a browser to get straight to the point and not have to look through all that code before knowing what you're looking for. <html> <head> <title>Input ID creates problems</title> <style type="text/css"> #prologue, #summary { margin: 5em; } </style> </head> <body> <h1>Input ID creates a bug</h1> <p id="prologue"> In this example, I make a list of checkboxes representing things which could appear in a book. If you want some in your book, you check them: </p> <form> <ul> <li> <input type="checkbox" id="prologue" /> <label for="prologue">prologue</label> </li> <li> <input type="checkbox" id="chapter" /> <label for="chapter">chapter</label> </li> <li> <input type="checkbox" id="summary" /> <label for="summary">summary</label> </li> <li> <input type="checkbox" id="etc" /> <label for="etc">etc</label> <label> </li> </ul> </form> <p id="summary"> For each checkbox, I want to assign an ID so that clicking a label checks the corresponding checkbox. The problems occur when other elements in the page already use those IDs. In this case, a CSS declaration was made to add margins to the two paragraphs which IDs are "prologue" and "summary", but because of the IDs given to the checkboxes, the checkboxes named "prologue" and "summary" are also affected by this declaration. The following links simply call a javascript function which writes out the element whose id is <a href="javascript:alert(document.getElementById('prologue'));">prologue</a> and <a href="javascript:alert(document.getElementById('summary'));">summary</a>, respectively. In the first case (prologue), the script writes out [object HTMLParagraphElement], because the first element found with id "prologue" is a paragraph. But in the second case (summary), the script writes out [object HTMLInputElement] because the first element found with id "summary" is an input. In the case of another script, the consequences of this mix up could have been much more dramatic. Now try clicking on the label prologue in the list above. It does not check the checkbox as clicking on any other label. This is because it finds the paragraph whose ID is also "prologue" and tries to check that instead. By the way, if there were another checkbox whose id was "prologue", then clicking on the label would check the one which appears first in the code. </p> <p> An easy fix for this would be to chose other IDs for the checkboxes, but this doesn't apply if these IDs are given dynamically, by a php script for example. Another easy fix for this would be to write labels like this: <pre> &lt;label&gt;&lt;input type="checkbox" /&gt;prologue&lt;/label&gt; </pre> and not need to give an ID to the checkboxes. But this only works if the label and checkbox are next to each other. </p> <p> Well, that's the problem. I guess the ideal solution would be to link a label to a checkboxe using another mechanism (not using ID). I think the perfect way to do this would be to match a label to the input element whose NAME (not ID) is the same as the label's FOR attribute. What do you think? </p> </body> </html>

  • No input method choice appear on iBus

    I've installed iBus and ibus-mozc, and an input method engine of Japanese from the repository, and attempted to enable mozc from Preference > "Input Method" tab > "Select Input Method" combo box. However, there is no choice to select, so I couldn't enable mozc. I also tried ibus-anthy, another legacy Japanese input method, but the situation was the same and I couldn't use anthy. Same problem is also occuring in openSUSE 12.1, so I don't think this is distribution-specific problem. In addition, this trouble also happened when I installed ibus-pynin, so this is not Japanese-specific. Any idea to find the cause of this trouble?
