  • What is the best solution for document archiving?

    I'm looking for a utility that helps me (and my colleagues) to archive documents in a systematic manner (Like Zeitgeist but permanent). The utility have to clean-out old document from desktops and store them on a server (as automatic as possible and consistent) maybe from just a few locations (Document directory) Documents shall be stored on cheap large media for many years to come - hard disk and file system maybe? Easy to maintain and manage for a small organization. Documents have to be easy to find and restore One systematic manner could be a directory-structure by year, month, user or user, year, month. Its a plus if documents could be linked to a project, if documents could be search-able and if document could also be mail, IM-discussions not only OpenOffice traditional documents. Any ideas?

    I use Ubuntu One to synch my home/Documents folder among more computers. On a portable tablet I have set the Documents folder in a separate Fat32 partition named sda6, and I made it default documents folder with Ubuntu Tweaks. How do I synchronize it with my /Documents cloud ? I tried to link /sda/Documents in my home folder but it didn't succeed: UbuntuOne still tries to set an own Documents folder and doesn't let me sync the linked folder with the cloud.   • Mac OS X duplex printing problem: one- vs. multi-paged documents

    I like to print on pre-printed stationery using the Preview.app and a duplex-capable HP Color Laserjet 4700 (PostScript) printer. The print dialog handles one and two-paged documents differently: the paper needs to be placed differently into the tray if the document contains one page versus when it contains two pages. This is not obvious when printing on plain paper but becomes obvious when front and reverse side of sheets are marked. Otherwise the first page would end up on the reverse side of the first sheet. I believe the problem is caused by the printer driver setting duplex printing to false (using the PostScript setpagedevice operator) when emitting a single-page document versus keeping it set to true when emitting multi-page documents. All this despite that duplex printing is always specified in the printer dialog. When printing a single-sided document, duplex=true and duplex=false seem to make a difference with respect which side of a sheet gets printed on. It would be also helpful if others could confirm the problem actually exists. I suspect this problem is not limited to specific printers. I'm on OS X 10.6 and I checked two different HP printers.

  • Office documents on intranet all requiring second login and can't pass auth? Disable webdav?

    I am not sure what is going on, but recently all the Office documents on our intranet get prompted a second time for login and according to the error logs it looks like it's trying to use webdav to open (an editable?) version of the document to save directly on the server? We have no sharepoint server setup or anything, but this shouldn't be happening. All I want is for the document to be saved or opened from a local copy in temp like normal. How can I disable this behavior so that office documents that are downloaded aren't attempted to be used through webdav?? Edit: I should clarify behavior, it asks if you want to save or open it, upon choosing open open, it asks to re-authenicate, you put in the user information and the login box comes up 3 times acting like you entered the wrong password. For some users, after passing the login box the third time, it still opens up, for others their browser just locks up.   • What packages do I need to compile .tex documents using XeLaTeX?

    Hi I'm aware of the existence of similar threads on this forum. But any of replies mach to my problem. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4 and I hadn't problems with fonts till I've decided to use XeLaTeX instead of LaTeX (cf http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/12347/typesetting-a-document-using-arabic-script/12358#12358). The problem is that I'm not able to compile any .tex document using XeLaTeX, as well as properly display XeLaTeX documentation. As I've learn thanks to mentioned thread, XeLaTeX uses the fonts availables in general in the system. I was trying yo read fontspec documentation, but it opens in pdf with a lot of white gaps and terminal output (quite long) consist mostly of errors.   • MS Word opens documents hosted on WebDav share read-only on Windows Vista and 7 but only if no other

    We have a WebDav server with some Word documents on it. (We are using PHP's HTTP_WebDAV_Server but get the same issue on tests with Apache mod_dav - both use digest authentication, basic auth doesn't work on Vista or later) We have a web page that opens the word documents using javascript like: Doc = new ActiveXObject("Sharepoint.OpenDocuments.3"); Doc.EditDocument(url, 'Word.Document'); which causes word to connect to the webdav server and open the document, bypassing IE and most of windows built in WebDav client. On Windows XP, this works perfectly, and (after prompting you to log in) allows you to edit the word document and save it back to the server. On Windows 7 and Windows Vista, this usually opens the document read only, but not in all cases. After quite a bit of trial and error, we found that it worked (i.e. opened read/write) if Explorer happened to be already connected to a WebDav server. Note that this works with any Webdav server, not neccesarily the one with the document that you are trying to edit. So other than telling our users to change settings on their machine, is there anything we can do in the javascript sharepoint call, or on the WebDav server that will fix this issue. Ps. We have the same problem when launching Word from an HTA file version of our system, with javascript like: wordApp = new ActiveXObject("Word.application"); wordApp = new ActiveXObject("Word.application"); wordApp.Visible = true; doc = wordApp.Documents.Open(url); Pps. Sorry if you think this question should be on Serverfault (or even SuperUser). I couldn't decide, but because we are programming the WebDav server ourself (in PHP) and I have more rep on this site than the others, I decided to post it here :-)

  • Is there a way to search for equations in Word 2007 documents?

    I have many large Word 2007 documents containing a few dozen equations each. Is there a way to locate the equations using Word's Find command, or do I have to hunt for them old-school? I tried searching for a graphic (^g) and and field (^d), but that didn't do the trick. Am I missing something obvious? Might there be a way to do this using VB or some other trick?

  • Could not import Django settings into Google App Engine

    Hello all you Google App Engine experts, I have used Django a little before but am new to Google App Engine and am trying to use it's development web server with Django for the first time. I don't know if this is relevent but I previously had Django 1.1 and Python 2.6 on my Windows XP and even though I have uninstalled Python 2.6 there is still a folder and entries in the registry. I have followed the instructions from Google but when I browse to the GAE developemnt web server it cannot find my settings (details below). Any hints gratefully received.   • Virtualbox shared folder mount from fstab fails; works once bootup is complete

    I've got Ubuntu 13.10 installed in Virtualbox 4.3. The host machine is Windows. I have a couple of Virtualbox shared folders being mounted by /etc/fstab. Until recently this setup worked just fine, but after upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04 and Virtualbox 4.2 (at essentially the same time) the fstab mounting stopped working. I get the following error during boot: An error occurred while mounting /home/benme/Documents. keys:Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery Pressing M for manual recovery and then trying to mount manually also fails: root@benme-vb:~# cd /home/benme root@benme-vb:/home/benme# mount Documents /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device But if I instead skip mounting during boot, wait for Unity to start and then mount manually in a shell, everything works fine: benme-vb ~ % ls Documents benme-vb ~ % sudo mount Documents [sudo] password for benme: benme-vb ~ % ls Documents # actual file list omitted Note that when I mount manually I'm letting mount take all the options from /etc/fstab, and it works. This suggests to me that it's some sort of timing issue, where Virtualbox isn't "ready" to provide the shared file mounts at the point /etc/fstab mounts are run during bootup. Here's the fstab line, just for completeness: Documents /home/benme/Documents vboxsf uid=benme,gid=benme,dmode=774,fmode=664 0 0 Is there something I can do about this from the Ubuntu side? Or does anyone happen to know more about this from the Virtualbox angle? I've found an old report on the Virtualbox bug-tracker with identical symptoms, but in that case the user had updated Virtualbox without updating their guest additions and resolving that fixed the problem; this isn't happening here, I've definitely got the 4.3 guest additions installed.

  • Making document storage in Sharepoint a breeze (leave the Web UI behind)

    Hey everyone, I know many of us regularly use Sharepoint for document storage in order to make documents available to several people, have it version controlled, etc.  Doing this through the Web UI can be a real headache, especially when you have multiple documents you want to modify or upload, or when IE isn’t your default browser.  Luckily we can access the Sharepoint library like a regular network drive if we like. Open Sharepoint in Internet Explorer (other browsers don’t support the Open with Explorer functionality), navigate to wherever your documents are stored, choose the Library tab, and then click Open with Explorer. This will open the document storage in Explorer and you can interact with the documents just like they were on any other network drive J  This makes uploading large numbers of documents or directory structures super easy (a simple copy-paste), and modifying your files nice and easy. As an added bonus, you can drag and drop that location from the address bar in Explorer to the Favorites menu so that it’s always easily accessible and you can leave the Sharepoint Web UI behind completely for modifying your documents.  Just click on the new favorite to go straight to your documents.   You can even map this folder location as a network drive if you want to have it show up as another drive (e.g N: drive).   • How can I get full filenames from Git difftool (for Microsoft Word "Compare Documents" feature)?

    I am using the latest version of Git (1.6.6) on a Mac. My wife wants to use Git to manage her fiction writing as long as she can still use Microsoft Word 2008 (Mac). Instead of pushing her into saving everything as plain text, I would like to use Git Difftool to pass the files to Word and use Word's Compare Documents feature. She wouldn't be able to use Git Diff since Word docs are binary files but she could still use Git Difftool. I have written an Applescript which takes two filenames in this format: /Users/foo/Documents/my_novel.docx and opens Word to do the file comparison. However, Git Difftool seems to only pass the bare filenames (e.g. my_novel.docx) as parameters. Is there anyway to get the full filenames from Git Difftool? Thanks, Doug

  • iPhone - how to store documents consisting of multiple images?

    My iPhone (actually, iPad) app creates documents that consist of several images, plus a bit of metadata. What's the best practice for storing these sorts of documents on disk? I see two main options: Create a folder for each document, and store my images as separate PNG files within the folder (plus another little file for the metadata). Create a single file which contains all images and metadata. But I'm not sure how to easily do option 2. I think I can convert my images in PNG format to/from NSData, but then what? I'm still a newbie at Cocoa, but I believe I saw something about stuffing mixed data into some NSSomethingOrOther and having this write itself out to disk, and read itself back in later. Does this ring a bell with anyone? And, will it work with large binary blobs of data like my images? Or would you recommend I simply go with option 1?

    My Couchdb database as a main document type that looks something like: { "_id" : "doc1", "type" : "main_doc", "title" : "the first doc" ... } There is another type of document that stores user information. I want users to be able to tag documents as favorites. Different users can save the same or different documents as favorites. My idea was to introduce a favorite document to track this something like: { "_id" : "fav1", "type" : "favorite", "user_id" : "user1", "doc_id" : "doc1" } It's easy enough to create a view with user_id as the key to get a list of their favorite doc IDs. E.g: function(doc) { if (doc.type == "favorite") { emit(doc.user_id, doc.doc_id); } } However I want to list of favorites to display the user_id, doc_id and title from the document. So output something like: { "key" : "user1", "value" : ["doc1", "the first doc"] }
