  I'm getting the following errors from MSBuild while trying to build a solution: C:\dev\MySln.sln : warning MSB3422: Failed to retrieve VC project information through the VC project engine object model. Unable to determine default tool for the specified file configuration. C:\dev\MySln.sln : warning MSB3425: Could not resolve VC project reference "C:\dev\MyProj.vcproj". Have you got any ideas on what's causing this? I've seen other postings about similar, but different errors such as when the MSB3422 error has a different message and shows "Illegal characters in path.", but I haven't seen any useful information about how to solve the error I'm getting where it says "Unable to determine default tool for the specified file configuration.".   I am having trouble understanding the following article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01255.html Under, Generics are not covariant the author states, Because ln is a List, adding a Float to it seems perfectly legal. But if ln were aliased with li, then it would break the type-safety promise implicit in the definition of li -- that it is a list of integers, which is why generic types cannot be covariant. I can't understand the part where it says "if ln were aliased with li". What does the author means by alias?(reference?). The code snippet above the quoted line seems to illustrate WHAT is illegal in java and not WHY. It would be very helpful to me if somebody could explain with an example. Thanks in advance.

  I want to use JAX-RS REST services as a back-end for a web application used directly by humans with browsers. Since humans make mistakes from time to time I want to validate the form input and redisplay the form with validation message, if something wrong was entered. By default JAX-RS sends a 400 or 404 status code if not all or wrong values were send. Say for example the user entered a "xyz" in the form field "count": @POST public void create(@FormParam("count") int count) { ... } JAX-RS could not convert "xyz" to int and returns "400 Bad Request". How can I tell the user that he entered an illegal value into the field "count"? Is there something more convenient than using Strings everywhere and perform conversation by hand?

• Legal uses of setjmp and GCC

  Using GCC (4.0 for me), is this legal: if(__builtin_expect(setjmp(buf) != 0, 1)) { // handle error } else { // do action } I found a discussion saying it caused a problem for GCC back in 2003, but I would imagine that they would have fixed it by now. The C standard says that it's illegal to use setjmp unless it's one of four conditions, the relevant one being this: one operand of a relational or equality operator with the other operand an integer constant expression, with the resulting expression being the entire controlling expression of a selection or iteration statement; But if this is a GCC extension, can I guarantee that it will work under for GCC, since it's already nonstandard functionality? I tested it and it seemed to work, though I don't know how much testing I'd have to do to actually break it. (I'm hiding the call to __builtin_expect behind a macro, which is defined as a no-op for non-GCC, so it would be perfectly legal for other compilers.)

• How do i write a sql query with user input and wildcards

  Usually i write my where statements as WHERE key=@0 then add a param. Now i would like the user to specific a few letters such as 'oat' and would like to stick wildcards around it %oat% which matches 'coating'. So how do i write the query so wildcards are around the user input (the 'seachword'). Now lets take it a step further. I would not like the user to write % so he cannot do blah%ing. Perhaps % is part of the sentence (or it could be flat out illegal but i prefer it be part of the sentence). How do i put my wildcards around a word or sentence and disallow the user from putting the wildcard between his words? (and preferably make % part of the sentence) C# ado.net sql/sqlite

I was wondering if there is an easy way to call a void* as a function in C without first declaring a function pointer and then assigning the function pointer the address; ie. assuming the function to be called is type void(void) void *ptr; ptr = <some address>; ((void*())ptr)(); /* call ptr as function here */ with the above code, I get error C2066: cast to function type is illegal in VC2008 If this is possible, how would the syntax differ for functions with return types and multiple parameters?

• EXC_BAD_ACCESS signal received

  When deploying the application to the device, the program will quit after a few cycles with the following error: Program received signal: "EXC_BAD_ACCESS". The program runs without any issue on the iPhone simulator, it will also debug and run as long as I step through the instructions one at a time. As soon as I let it run again, I will hit the EXC_BAD_ACCESS signal. In this particular case, it happened to be an error in the accelerometer code. It would not execute within the simulator, which is why it did not throw any errors. However, it would execute once deployed to the device. Most of the answers to this question deal with the general EXC_BAD_ACCESS error, so I will leave this open as a catch-all for the dreaded Bad Access error. EXC_BAD_ACCESS is typically thrown as the result of an illegal memory access. You can find more information in the answers below.   NSXMLParserInvalidCharacterError # 9 This is the error I get when I hit a weird character (like quotes copied and pasted from word to the web form, that end up in the feed). The feed I am using is not giving an encoding, and their is no hope for me to get them to change that. This is all I get in the header: < ?xml version="1.0"? < rss version="2.0" What can I do about illegal characters when parsing feeds? Do I sweep the data prior to the parse? Is there something I am missing in the API? Has anyone dealt with this issue?

  I have a problem with python about reading and print utf8 text file. I have a test.txt in utf8 encoding without BOM. This file has two characters in it: ?? The first character "?" is Chinese and the second "?" is Japanese. Now, When I use Ulipad (a python editor) to run the following code to read the txt file, and print these two characters. import codecs infile = "C:\\test.txt" f = codecs.open(infile, "r", "utf-8") s = f.read() print(s) I got this error, "UnicodeEncodeError: 'cp950' codec can't encode character '\u58f0' in position 1: illegal multibyte sequence" I found it caused from the second character "?" . But when I use the same code to test in python default GUI IDLE, it works to print the two characters with no error. So, how can I fix the problem. My running environment is python 3.1 , windows xp traditional Chinese.

• Propietary modules within GPL and BSD kernels

  Since the Linux kernel is GPL and not LGPL I suppose that it is illegal to link proprietary code to it. How does the industry circumvents this? I would expect that the GPL license will force any developer to release under GPL driver and/or kernel module. Maybe I am confused and implementing a new module is not really linking against the kernel code ??? How do companies deal with this? Maybe linking the other way around (from kernel to their binaries)? On the other hand there is the BSD kernel. Where you are free to link protected IP. Can you get a better design implementing your drivers within a BSD kernel? Is there any design restriction when implementing drivers for GPL kernels?

• How do I copy object in Qt?

  I'm using Qt and have some real basic problems. I have created my own widget MyTest that have a variable obj. I need to set this variable obj from an object outside of the widget so that the variable is copied not just a pointer to another object. I get an error message and can't figure out how to do this basic stuff.   I have some Firebug console function calls that I wanted to disable when Firebug wasn't enabled, e.g. console isn't defined. This works fine in IE6 and FF3, but not in Chrome: var log; if(console){ log = console.log; }else{ log = function(){ return; } } I get an "Uncaught TypeError: Illegal Invocation" in Chrome =/ I read about the issue here, where you have to apply a context, which is kind of new to me... and I can't seem to figure how to accomplish the above in all browsers...

• FreeLibrary vs implicit unloading DLL

I made a sample program which loads the library using LoadLibrary() function, uses the library function and finally call FreeLibrary() and return. When i executed this program, i didnt get any error message. But if i remove FreeLibrary(), in that case the DLL_PROCESS_DETACH case is executed implicitly and this time it gives error dialog box mentioning that there is access violation. Why calling FreeLibrary() suppress this error? OR internally it handles this exception? What is suggested way.

  I was going to crawl a site for some research I was collecting. But, apparently the terms of service is quite clear on the topic. Is it illegal to now "follow" the terms of service. And what can the site normally do? Here is an example clause in the TOS. Also, what about sites that don't provide this particular clause. Restrictions: "use any robot, spider, site search application, or other automated device, process or means to access, retrieve, scrape, or index the site" It is just research? Edit: "OK, from the standpoint of designing an efficient crawler. Should I provide some form of natural language engine to read terms of service and then abide by them."

• 0xDEADBEEF equivalent for 64-bit development?

  For C++ development for 32-bit systems (be it Linux, Mac OS or Windows, PowerPC or x86) I have initialised pointers that would otherwise be undefined (e.g. they can not immediately get a proper value) like so: int *pInt = reinterpret_cast<int *>(0xDEADBEEF); (To save typing and being DRY the right-hand side would normally be in a constant, e.g. BAD_PTR.) If pInt is dereferenced before it gets a proper value then it will crash immediately on most systems (instead of crashing much later when some memory is overwritten or going into a very long loop). Of course the behavior is dependent on the underlying hardware (getting a 4 byte integer from the odd address 0xDEADBEEF from a user process may be perfectly valid), but the crashing has been 100% reliable for all the systems I have developed for so far (Mac OS 68xxx, Mac OS PowerPC, Linux Redhat Pentium, Windows GUI Pentium, Windows console Pentium). For instance on PowerPC it is illegal (bus fault) to fetch a 4 byte integer from an odd address. What is a good value for this on 64-bit systems?
