• Unselected UIPickerView value

  According to the documentation, if a UIPickerView has no selected value, the expected return from selectedRowInComponent: should be: "A zero-indexed number identifying the selected row, or -1 if no row is selected." However, if I check the value the very line after initializing one, its value is 0. Even if I then manually set it to -1, it still returns 0. I would like to be able to detect whether the user has chosen a value yet or not, without recording it in a local variable. • EC2 instance suddenly refusing SSH connections and won't respond to ping

  My instance was running fine and this morning I was able to access a Ruby on Rails app hosted on it. An hour later I suddenly wasn't able to access my site, my SSH connection attempts were refused and the server wasn't even responding to ping. I didn't change anything on my system during that hour and reboots aren't fixing it. I've never had any problems connecting or pinging the system before. Can someone please help? This is on my production system! • Problems setting up an ASP.NET MVC site on IIS7 w/ Nhibernate

The only other cause of this error I can find is that the Global.asax file is inheriting from a class other than HttpApplication, but I'm not doing that either. • Measuring Web Page Performance on Client vs. Server

  I am working with a web page (ASP.net 3.5) that is very complicated and in certain circumstances has major performance issues. It uses Ajax (through the Telerik AjaxManager) for most of its functionality. I would like to be able to measure in some way the amounts of time for the following, for each request: On client submitting request to server Client-to-Server On server initializing request On server processing request Server-to-Client Client rendering, JavaScript processing I have monitored the database traffic and cannot find any obvious culprit. On the other hand, I have a suspicion that some of the Ajax interactions are causing performance issues. However, until I have a way to track the times involved, make a baseline measurement, and measure performance as I tweak, it will be hard to work on the issue. So what is the best way to measure all of these? Is there one tool that can do it? Combination of FireBug and logging inserted into different places in the page life-cycle?

I am beating myself to think out what I am missing, but still can't make it work. • Using a Loader for a string of QML

  In Qt 5.3 I've been using the Loader QML element for loading screens. Now I'm trying to load a string of QML dynamically. Qt.createQmlObject enables me to do so, but I can't seem to get the Loader element to play along. Seems like Loader only takes a URL (QUrl) or component (QQmlComponent), but Qt.createQmlObject creates an object (QObject). I'm new to QML, but from my understanding components are reusable elements, similar to classes, and objects are the instances of those classes. I thus can't seem to wrap my head around why Loader wouldn't work with objects. How can I show a loading screen while (asynchronously) parsing and initializing a string of QML? • How do I specify the block object / predicate required by NSDictionary's keysOfEntriesPassingTest ?

  For learning (not practical -- yet) purposes, I'd like to use the following method on an NSDictionary to give me back a set of keys that have values using a test I've defined. Unfortunately have no idea how to specify the predicate. NSDictionary keysOfEntriesPassingTest: - (NSSet *)keysOfEntriesPassingTest:(BOOL (^)(id key, id obj, BOOL *stop))predicate Let's say for example all my values are NSURLs, and I'd like to get back all the URLs that are on port 8080. Here's my stab at coding that -- though it doesn't really make sense to me that it'd be correct: NSSet * mySet = [myDict keysOfEntriesPassingTest:^(id key, id obj, BOOL *stop) { if( [[obj port] isEqual: [NSNumber numberWithInt: 8080]]) { return key; }] And that's because I get back the following compiler error: incompatible block pointer types initializing 'void (^)(struct objc_object *, struct objc_object *, BOOL *)', expected 'BOOL (^)(struct objc_object *, struct objc_object *, BOOL *)' What am I missing? I'd appreciate a pointer at some docs that go into more detail about the "Block object" that the predicate is supposed to be. Thanks!

• Erlang: How to view output of io:format/2 calls in processes spawned on remote nodes.

  Hello, I am working on a decentralized Erlang application. I am currently working on a single PC and creating multiple nodes by initializing erl with the -sname flag. When I spawn a process using spawn/4 on its home node, I can see output generated by calls io:format/2 within that process in its home erl instance. When I spawn a process remotely by using spawn/4 in combination with register_name, output of io:format/2 is sometimes redirected back to the erl instance where the remote spawn/4 call was made, and sometimes remains completely invisible. Similarly, when I use rpc:call/4, output of io:format/2 calls is redirected back to the erl instance where the `rpc:call/4' call is made. How do you get a process to emit debugging output back to its parent erl instance?

• Windows Disk I/O Analysis

  It appears that we are having a problem with the disk i/o speed on our Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64-bit). As we were initializing a database that created two 1G tablespaces on 3 different machines, it became obvious that the two smaller machines (each 32-bit Windows 2003 Standard Edition with less RAM) killed the larger machine when creating the files. The larger machine took 10x as long to create the tablespaces than did the other machines. Now, I am left wondering how that could be. What programs or scripts would you guys recommend for tracking down the I/O problem? I think the issue may be with the controller card (all boxes are hardware RAID 10, but have different controller cards), but I would like to check the actual disk I/O speed as well, so I have some hard numbers to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

• Graceful handling of server timeout in BlazeDS

  I have a flex client that makes service calls to a tomcat server running BlazeDS. I would like to gracefully handle server session timeouts in this environment. I do have security constraints on the service, so the client authenticates against a remote object by initializing a ChannelSet based on the destination, and then logging in using that ChannelSet. After the user is authenticated, if they go get a (long) cup of coffee, their session will inevitably time out. I would like the client to detect the timeout, and return the user back to the login page, with the appropriate informational messages. But I am having difficulty finding the best way to detect this timeout from the client. Is it possible, or must I have the server throw an error when the timeout occurs? Thanks!

  I'm trying to convert an existing svn repository to a mercurial repo with the following command hg convert <repository> <folder> My problem is that the svn repository's authentication is done with p12 certificates. I'm a bit lost on how to configure the certificate for the hg client so that I can pull the svn repo and convert it. Currently, if I try to run the above command, I get initializing destination hg-client repository abort: error: _ssl.c:480: error:14094410:SSL routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert handshake failure In other words, it cannot find the required certificate. The question is, how do I configure my hg client so that it can use my certificate? I'm using the command line hg client on linux.

It make a call to a API function called set_relay, then the code has to wait before continuing until the event for set_relay event has completed. The set_relay is any Async call. i.e. void run_processes() { switch() { case EV_RELAY_SET: break; } } void config_relays() { set_relay(); /* Wait until EV_RELAY_SET has fired */ /* Cannot do init_relay until set_relay event has fired - has to block here */ init_relay(); } I guess I could put the init_relay() in the switch. However, that event is used for other things and not just for initializing the relay. I would really like to handle everything in the config_relays function. In C# you can do this by using autoreset. Because I'm calling alloc I know it's my responsibility to call release on the string when I'm done. But what about the variables "lines" and "line"? Since the method "componentsSeparatedByString" does not start with the word "new" or "create" can I assume "lines" will be autoreleased? Same question for "line" since "objectAtIndex" also does not start with "new" or "create". NSString* buffer = [[NSString alloc] initWithData:[fileManager contentsAtPath:@"/foo"] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; NSArray* lines = [buffer componentsSeparatedByString:@"\n"]; NSString* line = [lines objectAtIndex:5]; // do something with line [buffer release]; So is the code above okay?   I have the following C++ code: typedef int* IntPtr; const int* cip = new int; const IntPtr ctip4 = cip; I compile this with Visual Studio 2008 and get the following error: error C2440: 'initializing' : cannot convert from 'const int *' to 'const IntPtr' Clearly my understanding of typedefs is not what is should be. The reason I'm asking, I'm storing a pointer type in a STL map. I have a function that returns a const pointer which I would like to use to search in the map (using map::find(const key_type&). Since const MyType* and const map<MyType*, somedata>::key_type is incompatible, I'm having problems. Regards Dirk

  My Flex application uses a client-side pimento EntityManager which fetches quite a few objects and associations. It does this by forcing eager fetching of particular association ends in the form of fetch plans. I would like to update the client whenever a change has been made to an entity existing in the EntityManager's cache. Is it possible to update the state of the changed entity ONLY, including updating which entities are associated, without resetting the state of these associated entities? I have setup an EntityListener with a JPA post-update method that notifies clients when a persisted entity has been updated. I want this to trigger a refresh for the modified client-side entity, but calling EntityManager.refresh(entity) resets all lazy associations to proxies. Initializing these proxies resets the associated entities, even if they were loaded previously. I'm looking for an efficient way to keep the client's state in synch with the server's state, at least with respect to the entities that have already been retrieved by the initial load.

  Ok, I understand perl hash slices, and the "x" operator in Perl, but can someone explain the following code example from here (slightly simplified)? sub test{ my %hash; @hash{@_} = (undef) x @_; } Example Call to sub: test('one', 'two', 'three'); This line is what throws me: @hash{@_} = (undef) x @_; It is creating a hash where the keys are the parameters to the sub and initializing to undef, so: %hash: 'one' = undef, 'two' = undef, 'three' = undef The rvalue of the x operator should be a number; how is it that @_ is interpreted as the length of the sub's parameter array? I would expect you'd at least have to do this: @hash{@_} = (undef) x length(@_);

• Why do I not see stricter scoping more often?

  I've found myself limiting scope fairly often. I find it makes code much clearer, and allows me to reuse variables much more easily. This is especially handy in C where variables must be declared at the start of a new scope. Here is an example of what I mean. { int h = 0; foreach (var item in photos) { buffer = t.NewRow(); h = item.IndexOf("\\x\\"); buffer["name"] = item.Substring(h, item.Length - h); t.Rows.Add(buffer); } } With this example, I've limited the scope of h, without initializing it in every iteration. But I don't see many other developers doing this very often. Why is that? Is there a downside to doing this?
