• Uuntu 9.10 will not boot

  After an update yesterday my Dell X300 will only boot to a screen with an option to perform 2 memory tests. If I perform these tests, it will only go back to this same screen, offering a choice of memory test again, 86+ or 86+ serial console 115200. This screen is headed - GNU Grub version 1.97 beta 4. This is a full install on my hard drive. How can I get back to booting normally?

• Sync content from my iPad to iTunes? i.e. "reverse" syncing

  I recently had to reset my PC back to factory settings which lost my entire iTunes library. I still have my music and other files on my iPad and want to sync it back to the PC. Upon syncing it only gives me two options. "Erase and Sync" which replaces the contents of my iPad with the blank iTunes library, or, "Transfer Purchases" which reads like it will only transfer the purchases from iPad to iTunes. I would like to avoid re-burning my entire CD library to iTunes all over again. Is there a way for me to sync the iPad to the iTunes library (aka the computer)?

• Minimal backup for Windows 7 system recovery [migrated]

  There might not be an answer to this, but for a home Win7 system, what files/directories must be backed up to recover after a windows crash? I can reinstall software, and I keep data files elsewhere. When I use acronis home backup software to backup my "critical" files it seems to choose the entire partition. Updates are mostly browser cache files and the like. Or, after a crash, should I just reinstall windows. I dread the hours of windows updates that would require. Thanks.

• Managing records of bugs and notes

  Hi. I want to create a knowledgebase for a piece of software. I'd also like to be able to track bugs and common points of failure in that application. Linking knowledgebase articles to bug records would be a real boon, as would the ability to do complex queries for particular articles and bugs on the basis of tags or metadata. I've never done anything like this before, and like to install as little as possible. I've been looking at creating a wiki with Wiki On A Stick, and it seems to offer a lot. But I can't make complex queries. I can create pages that list all 'articles' with a particular single tag, but I can't specify multiple tags or filters. Is there any software that can help? I don't want to spend money until I've tried something out thoroughly, and I'd ideally like something that demands little-to-no installation. Are there any tools that can help me? If something could easily export its data, or stored data in XML, that would be a real plus too. Otherwise, are there any simple apps that allow me to set up forms for bugs, store data as XML then query and process that XML on demand? Thanks in advance.

  hey all, just getting started on hadoop and curious what the best way in mapreduce would be to count unique visitors if your logfiles looked like this... DATE siteID action username 05-05-2010 siteA pageview jim 05-05-2010 siteB pageview tom 05-05-2010 siteA pageview jim 05-05-2010 siteB pageview bob 05-05-2010 siteA pageview mike and for each site you wanted to find out the unique visitors for each site? I was thinking the mapper would emit siteID \t username and the reducer would keep a set() of the unique usersnames per key and then emit the length of that set. However that would be potentially storing millions of usernames in memory which doesn't seem right. Anyone have a better way? I'm using python streaming by the way thanks

Tried a few other combination and failed. Any idea? Thanks!

  How can I use IndexOf with SubString to pick a specific Character when there are more than one of them? Here's my issue. I want to take the path "C:\Users\Jim\AppData\Local\Temp\" and remove the "Temp\" part. Leaving just "C:\Users\Jim\AppData\Local\" I have solved my problem with the code below but this assumes that the "Temp" folder is actually called "Temp". Is there a better way? • Possible to have empty values with Html For Helpers such as Html.TextBoxFor()?

  Hi Is it possible to have to make a html for helper in asp.net mvc 2.0 have a default value of "empty string" Like if I do this Html.TextBoxFor( u => u.ProductName) would render to <input id ="ProductName" name="ProdcutName" type="text" value="Jim" /> Now I don't want the textbox to display jim. I want it to display nothing. <input id ="ProductName" name="ProdcutName" type="text" value="" /> I tried to do this Html.TextBoxFor( u => u.ProductName, new { @value = " "}) but that seems to do nothing. So how can I do this. I hope you can do something like this otherwise I think these new helpers have a great flaw since now I need to use like javascript to remove them since I hardly ever want a default value in the textbox especially when I have a label right beside the textbox saying what it is.

• Mark Zuckerberg tops the list of 50 Highest Rated CEOs. 3 Indian CEOs feature in the list.

  Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook is rated as the best CEO according to a report released by the popular employee reviews website Glassdoor.com. 50,000 employees reviews submitted to Glassdoor in the past 1 year are considered for preparing the rating list and Zukerberg topped the list with 99 percent approval to the question “Do you approve of the way your CEO is leading the company?”. Wow! That’s an amazing support to Zukergerg from his employees though stock market and share holders are not with him. Coincidently Facebook is also rated as the best company to work by Glassdoor in a recent survey. Here is the list of top 10 CEOs Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook; 99.3% Approval Bill McDermott & Jim Hagemann Snabe, SAP; 99% Approval Dominic Barton, McKinsey & Company; 97% Approval Jim Turley, Ernst & Young; 96% Approval John E. Schlifske, Northwestern Mutual; 96% Approval Frank D’Souza, Cognizant Technology Solutions; 96% Approval Joe Tucci, EMC; 96% Approval Paul E. Jacobs, QUALCOMM; 95% Approval Richard K. Davis, U.S. Bank; 95% Approval Pierre Nanterme, Accenture; 95% Approval 3 Indian CEOs in the top 50 list – TCS, Wipro & MindTree The list featured three Indian CEOs and all the three are leading Software IT Services organizations in India and creating thousands of IT jobs.  Natarajan Chandrasekaran – the CEO of TCS is at 25th position, Krishnakumar Natarajan – the CEO of MindTree is at 28th position and  Wipro’s T.K.Kurien is at 44th position. Glad to see Indian CEO joining the global ranks. Tech Heavy Weights Google, Apple, Amazon & Microsoft aren’t in top 10 Another thing to note from this report is that the CEO’s of technology heavy weights Google, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft are not in the top10 list- looks like their employees are not really happy with their bosses. At least not as happy as their peers at Facebook. Google CEO’s Larry Page is at 11th position, Jeff Bezos of Amazon at 16th position and Tim Cook of Apple is at 18th position.
