• The benefits and hassles of moving entirely to a WPF Project

  Hi, I have a project that i started as a WinForms application as that was the format i was confortable with at the time. I have since started dabbling in WPF an introduced some WPF UserControls (mainly grids) into my project and absolutely love them. The question i have is, is there any real advantage to me changing the UI Project of my solution into a purely WPF project, and get rid of any WinForms? I am fully aware that each format suits a certain environment, and you wouldnt be able to give a definitive answer without knowing more of the details, but i would like to know peoples opinions, and if anyone has done a silimar thing of converting an existing WinForms App into a WPF frontend, and any observations they made in doing so. • How often do you find javascript disabled on browsers?

  I have started using ajax/jQuery in our websites / application. There are many plugins that support degrading the javascript to browsers that dont have javascript enabled and techniques to support this. What are peoples thoughts on javascript support, we build applications rather than just websites and are looking to just support javascript enabled browsers as a pre-requisite assuming that most people or companies have javascript enabled. Do you find most people have javascript? do you monitor the percentage of javascript/non-javascript browsers (I guess this can be done with website stats) and what are the numbers regarding this?

• Best Java 'framework' for LOW-END 3D Graphics?

  I've made my share of 2D games on various platforms but I have never developed a 3D game. I want to make a small "mmorpg". I already made my server in python and it works just fine with my flash 2D game but I decided I want to step it up and try out 3D. I want to make a 3D game for the web browser and I think Java might be a good choice for this. So basically I'm just looking for a straight forward and well documents 'framework' to make LOW-END 3D games. Keep in mind that I will be targeting peoples with very low-end PC's (plus my 3d modeling skills aren't great so I wouldn't mind hiding it somewhat, haha)

• Design Question on when to save

  Hi, I was just after peoples opinion on when the best time to save an object (or collection of objects) is. I appreciate that it can be completely dependent on the situation that you are in but here is my situation. I have a collection of objects "MyCollection" in a grid. You can open each object "MyObject" in an editor dialogue by double clicking on the grid. Selecting "Cancel" on the dialogue will back out any changes you have made, but should selecting "ok" commit those changes back to the database, or should they commit the changes on that object back to the collection and have a save method that iterates through the collection and saves all changed objects? If i have an object "MyParentObject", that contains a collection of childen "MyChildObjectCollection", none of the changes made to each "MyChildObject" would be commited to the database until the "MyParentObject" was saved - this makes sense. However in my current situation, none of the objects in the collection are linked, therefore should the "Ok" on the dialogue commit the changes to the database? Appreciate any opinions on this.   I have a requirement to build branded e-commerce sites that have their own urls but are on the same installation. I've been looking at DNN, and Jboss portals as well as the new GateIn collaboration between Jboss portals and Exo. I really like what I see in comparison to DNN, which looks a bit rough in comparison but I haven't seen anything with respect to Jboss portals ecommerce. What has been peoples experience with using the Jboss portals or GateIn etc, for branded portals or using Jboss for selling? UPDATE: cost is an issue.

• I do not write tests. Am I stupid?

  I've done a little bit of reading on unit testing and TDD, and I've never seriously considered writing tests to such a precise extent. Granted, I am not working on any projects that are ridiculously huge. If all I build are small apps, am I stupid for not writing tests? Edit: To clarify, when I say "small apps", I mean apps that are not going to control a persons life and/or their belongings. I generally build things that are supposed to make peoples lives easier and to make them more efficient.

• What is the current state of Unit testing support in the R language

  R is a statistics programming language. Part of R is the use of Packages, which themselves are written in the R language. Programming best practice includes the use of unit-testing to test the functions within these packages while they are being written and when they are used. I am aware of a few packages for unit testing within R, these being RUnit Svunit Testthat I'm interested to know; Are there any other packages out there ? Given peoples experience, do these packages excel at different things ? What's the current state of the art in unit testing for R ?

• in asp.net linking two webpages and one of them has emails which an user can select who they want to

  I have two pages in the first page i have a button called emails. when the user clicks on the email button it will take them to the emails pages and there i have 12 checkboxes and a OK button. the user can select as many checkboxes as they want. the checkboxes have peoples email in them. after they select it they click on the OK button and which will take them to the page1.aspx where they will fill rest of the information out and when they clicked on the emails button and came back to the page1 it will not erase any of their information. I have redirected the page to emails and back to page1 but i don't know how to save the checked emails from the emails page and clicking OK and taking back to the page1 so the other information on that page is already there not been erased.

• Does anyone change the Visual Studio default bracing style in C# - Is there a standard?

  I find the default bracing style a bit wasteful on line count eg... function foo() { if (...) { ... } else { ... } } would, if I was writing in JavaScript for example be written like... function foo() { if (...) { ... } else { ... } } ...which I understand may also not be to peoples' tastes. But the question(s) is/are do you turn off the VS formatting style and use your own rules? What is the opinion of this in the industry when many people are working on the same code-base? Is it better just to stick to the default just for simplicity/uniformity?

  Refering to this question I asked a while ago: UI functionality modeling languages It looks like there is no good-enough solution. I decided to develop one. (and prepare a set of elements for DIA or something) I'm sure it will require a good insight in peoples' experiences and problems in designing functionally complicated GUIs. I've got some ideas already, but I'd like to hear from You what You'd expect from a GUI functionality modelling language. Clarification: It's functionality modelling, so it's not about where I put a button. It's about objects that have some events binded, and the interface behaviour logic. If You think (just as I do) that UML is far from useful for such purposes - feel free to put Your expectations here. I'll try to meet them.   Hey there, So I'm knocking together a random pattern generation thing. • Security approach in web application

  Hello everyone. I am designing a web application in ASP.NET / C# where each registered user has the ability to add/modify/delete rows based on their user-id. Take this example: I am going to edit my route on the page /route.aspx?routeid=854 which belongs to me (user-id: 1). But because I am a curious guy I try to access /route.aspx?routeid=855 which belongs to another user (user-id: 2). How can I best avoid people from accessing other peoples data? Should I send each user id (from session) with each database-call, should I validate user/password on every page load or what is the best and most secure approach? I hope I made this clear enough.

• jQuery-AJAX to rebind dropdown list to results from stored procedure

  I have a dropdown list of peoples names that is quite long. As many as 2,000 names. I would like to make it easier to find the name the user is interested in by limiting the dropdown list to a subset of names at a time. I have done this by creating a series of 26 links (A, B, C ... Z) that call a method in the code behind that populates the dropdown list with only those names starting with the letter the user clicked. This all works well but I would like to be able to use AJAX to accomplish this update of the dropdown list without a page refresh. I would like to use jQuery for the AJAX functionality rather than ASP.NET AJAX. My problem is I am not sure how to execute the stored procedure and then "rebind" the dropdown list with the new dataset via jQuery AJAX. Any suggestions or resources that might provide and example or walk-through? Thank you.

• Implementing Google Search Appliance results into website

  I’m interested to hear peoples preferred methods or approaches to implementing the search results from a Google Search Appliance into an existing website. More specifically how do people prefer to implement/embed the search results into their existing site and persist the surrounding website elements (menus, membership etc) around the search results. As far as I am aware there are 3 different approaches. Sub-domain, handle everything in the xslt – create a search.mysite.com which is completely handled by google xslt and embed surround site components in xslt. Embed search results into existing site using an iframe – Use the existing website and just use an iframe to import results into page. Embed results into existing site by using server side processing – This is how I have previously integrated search into a site using a combination of bespoke dev and the GSALib project. I would be interested to hear if anyone has other suggestions, and were people have benefited or regretted using the above approaches.

  I'm interested in peoples' views on how best to store preferences and default settings in cross-platform applications. I primarily work in Perl on *nix and Windows but I'm also interested in the bigger picture. In the *nix world "dotfiles" (and directories) are very common with system-wide or application default settings generally residing in one path and user-specific settings in the home directory. Such files and dirs begin with a dot "." and are hidden by default from directory listings. Windows has the registry which also has paths for defaults and per-user overrides. Certain cross-platforms do it their own way, Firefox uses JavaScript preference files. Should a cross-platform app use one system across platforms or say dotfiles on *nix and registry on Windows? Does your favourite programming language have a library or module for accessing them in a standard way? Is there an emerging best practice or does everybody roll their own?

  I am trying to convert different files to a flash compatible .mp4 file with ffmpeg, but i cant seem to succeed. Off cource the objective is to get the greatest quality with the smallest filesize. So far I have this, that works but it doesnt play in a flash player of some reason, and the result isnt that great, anybody got any tips on how to improve this conversion? ffmpeg -i input.file -f mp4 -vcodec mpeg4 -r 25 -b 560000 -s 610x340 -acodec aac -ac 2 -ab 64 -ar 44100 output.file Would be great the se other peoples experiences with this type of conversion.

• Finding the angle of a fleeing dodo.

  I'm coding some critter AI for a game i am working on for my Unity 3D project. I have no programming background and have been stumbling through this using tutorials and other peoples scripts. My problem is that i want my critter to run directly away from the player when the player kicks it. I need the dodo to run directly away from the player when kicked, and i dont know the math nor the syntax to calculate that angle. They are two characters moving independently through worldspace. Here is what i got so far: waypoint = (fleeWP.transform.position); transform.LookAt(Vector3(waypoint.x, transform.position.y, waypoint.z)); transform.Translate (Vector3.forward * speed * Time.deltaTime); This currently makes the critter move towards the waypoint, rather than away. I might be attacking this all wrong. Please chastise me.

• Experience using IRC to coordinate software development?

  I am part of a growing software project with at least 200 active developer in 10 locations. I would like to set up an on-line chat forum for developers because I think it would help to coordinate efforts. We have an email mailing list but I feel like some questions or announcements are too informal to send to everyone while mentioning it in a chat forum might be a useful community resource. I have never participated in a software project that used an on-line chat forum so I would like to hear about peoples experiences. I am particularly interested in technical issues: Use of IRC vs. alternative platforms; how to manage access, eg. for developers only, allowing users to participate; the value of requiring certain announcements to be made on the chat forum eg who is resolving broken builds etc. If I pitch the idea to the community I would like to have some good arguments why it would be a good idea and some prospective of its usefulness in other software projects.

  I have a blog that I would like to increase traffic on. I've read lots of technical blogs, but it's a lot different writing a blog versus reading a blog. There seems to be several ways to write a post. General article: I like this tool. This is how I do it. Specific technical issue: Programming solutions. I do get some traffic, but they don't leave any comments. Should I use HN and Reddit. What are some of the other places I can promote my blog? How to respond to negative comments (trolls)? • VIsual Studio 2010 Web Performance Test / Load tests / Coded UI Tests. ANYONE REALLY USE THESE?

  I can find some articles on how to use them but I can't seem to find anywhere peoples impression of them using them in real projects. I have been trying to figure out how to use them and Ive had alot of problems.. Can someone out there who uses these tools on the job give me thier impression? Are there better alternate tools available? Using these really just a waste of time ? With Coded UI Tests I see how they are good for basic javascript checking but its so basic of a example I don't think it is worth it. With web tests I like how they work but when I activate code coverage/ASP.NET profiling it doesnt work half the time.

• Facebook page linking to external site sign-up process, capture permission to write to wall in process?

  Hi all, Have had a good hunt through the archive but can't find anyone trying to do this... hope someone familiar with the facebook API can confirm if it's possible? Basically I have a client who wants to replicate their membership sign up process in a tab on their facebook page. The form would still submit to their own website to process, we'd just be replicating the form fields. As an additional requirement they want to capture peoples facebook user ID and get permission to post back to a users wall at the same time... The idea being that once the user is a member we can post back to their wall so their friends see that they've signed up... Basically after a sanity check that: 1) these things are possible to do; 2) the best method to build the form in a FB page - I'm guessing using JS to create all fields & ajax to submit to the external site? • Activate window/application

  I have implemented a Splash Screen according to WiredPrairie unmanaged c++ splasher class. But not when my application loads, my window isn't activated. The user has to click on the login box even thought it is the only window open in my application. I have tried the following but none of these work. Topmost = true; Focus(); Activate(); Is there any way to give my login window focus when the application starts? Sometimes the window behind it has focus! (Visual Studio if run on my machine), Explorer or a different application window on other peoples machines. Anyone have any idea?

  I want to develop a WebPart in C# to display peoples who have a certain right on the list of the SharePoint page. So I began by creating a "Visual Web Part" in VS2010, and in the View Designer I add a DataList because I think it is the most relevant. But now, I don't know how to link my data with this DataList. It ask me for an XML file but which one choose ? And where can I take it ? After all, how to make this WebPart generic with all my SharePoint pages which implements one list ?

• Waiting for a background operation to complete

  I have been suffering from the all too common 'Waiting for a background operation to complete...' message in Visual Studio 2012 (Professional) for a while now but it has been fairly sporadic. Lately though, I am really struggling to use Visual Studio as pretty much whenever i try and do anything with any Razor views (mostly clicking to move the cursor) visual studio hangs and the above message appears for about a minute at a time. (If when its finished doing stuff i then click in the view again, the process repeats, and repeats, and repeats.....) I have searched high and low, and read loads of articles regarding this and peoples suggestions and tried changing indentation settings, resetting settings, etc but none have worked. Has anyone come across something else that may work as this is seriously impeding my ability to use visual studio and sadly provoking much cursing.
