• Good HDMI splitter solution

  I have a full HD TV which has only 2 HDMI ports on it. Since I have more than 2 devices I connect to TV (e.g. laptop, game console, DVD player), it becomes uncomfortable to plug in and plug out HDMI cables every time I need to use the relevant device. I need a cheap solution to increase the number of my HDMI ports at least to 3. What type of splitter do you recommend? Does the quality of splitter matter, or do they all produce the same audio & video quality?

  I am interested in a way to have private cloud which would host Glassfish (or Tomcat) server. Which option from Eucalyptus, Openstack or Nimbus would be best to deploy java applications on it? Or maybe there is something other and I am looking wrong at the problem? The way I imagine this, that I should have some shared storage that I could expand by introducing new nodes to this cluster and have easy management for glassfish instances: something like virtual machines images that I can start and stop on demand and that image is shared among nodes. I don't need concrete step-by-step solution here but guidelines how this should be done are very welcome.

• Software solution to switch between computers using KVM switch

  I am using a Fling KVM switch (by Belkin), to connect 2 computers to my monitor One computer is running XP and the other is running Linux My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has kindly supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work). Thanks in advance Norm

• Looking for a free/cheap backup solution on OSX for NTFS external HDD [closed]

  Hi, I'm looking for an incremental backup system on OSX that plays nice with USB NTFS-formatted external HDDs. I an currently using NTFS-3G (http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/) to work with the HDD, but since Time Machine doesn't work with NTFS drives, I have just been manually copying files from my HDD to back it up (ugh). I need to use an NTFS drive because I am going back and forth between Windows machines at my school and a mac at home. I have no permissions at my school to install any Windows software, so I am forced to find a OSX solution. Please -- any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

• What is your best solution for task management?

  I have Outlook at work, Gmail at home and a BlackBerry (only syncs with work Outlook). I see that there are a number of online websites that support webbased task lists such as "remember the milk", etc. My biggest issue with Outlook is that I flag a number of emails as tasks and they show up as tasks in Outlook but NOT on my BlackBerry. I still haven't found a workaround to this. I see there is some BlackBerry sync tools but I am not sure if this will work with my corporate network. Any suggestions for getting this to work or another optimal task management solution that works at home, work and on the road?

• Linux HA - Best Heartbeat hardware solution

  Hi all I would ask anyone what is the best layer 2 medium for heartbeat in Linux and how it's best configured. More precisely I've been thinking about a dedicated NIC for that purpose but then i thought that if a switch breaks then i would loose the heartbeat connection for most of the cluster and STONITH 'BUM'!!! Will probably loose my job after :) Distributing the heartbeat onto the main NICs of every node trough a vif sounds reasonable but im not sure if this is the best option (at least the switches are redundant to some extent). Is it possible to use heartbeat over a bonded interface and that sounds reasonable? Do you have any other tip/solution for that issue?

  My company is hosting a website in a server with IIS, SQL Server and a 3rd party windows service (written in C#, source code available for amendments). We bought a new identical server, composed by: 1x Quad Core, 12GB RAM, 4x160GB SATA Raid 5, Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, Public IP. We aim to put all webpages and the 3rd party windows service in an high-availability state. After some lab-testing on how to configure Failover Clustering and Hyper-V, we have deep doubts on what the "best" solution would be, by "best" meaning maintainable and able to correctly handle a physical server failure. Any suggestion on how we should configure the two servers? We don't need all the configuration's step, just an hint on the right direction to follow.

  The community (300 members), cocktailnetwork, has a website, cocktailnetwork.eu and about ten mailing lists. We want to manage the mailing lists from inside the website (lists and subscribers) and link the list's informations with the member profiles on the site. We are on shared hosting. The community members use the lists to send mails to all other members / groups of members. They can subscribe / unsubscribe from a list. The administrators can in addition create / delete / modify lists. Right now I use ezmlm with QmailAdmin, the lists are completly seperated from the website. I could link the data via remote administration commands, but that's not very satisfactory, does not allow the creation of new lists and it's an deprecated feature of our hosting package, sooner or later we'll need to switch anyway. Do You know of an elegant solution for us ? Any web service with a good, stable API ? Thanks.

• Email solution for new domain [on hold]

  I registered my domain at NameCheap, and have it hosted now at AWS Route 53. However, I'm at a loss for how now to set up sending transactional email. I hear Amazon SES is a good solution, but that requires me to verify my e-mail. I don't have email set up (no e-mail addresses at my domain nor a email client to receive the email verification). As an added wrinkle, I have my sitename.com bucket redirecting to www.sitename.com, and I'm hosting my site on Route 53 using www.sitename.com. However, does this screw things up if I need to switch my MX records since perhaps the 'www' throws things off (would it point to mail.www.sitename.com)?

The best we can do is to store a copy and share it online. To me, Mind map is an ir-replaceable piece of tools (yet) as agile note taking tools.   I've to faced kinda of missing drivers after formatted Windows .. Especially, Graphic Drivers, Touch-pad driver, finger print driver and so forth are sensitive . They do not work without installing drivers. I can even download at its official website . But some drivers are not found in the website. .. Thus, I'm looking for a solution ( may be a software ) that can backup my drivers effectively ( if it can do with schedule, it'll be great) and can restore easily locally . • Network monitoring solution

  Hello Serverfault ! I have a big distributed system I need to monitor. Background: My system is comprised of two servers, concentrating and controlling the system. Each server is connected to a set of devices (some custom kind of RF controllers, doesnt matter to my question), each device connects to a network switch, and eventually all devices talk to the servers, the protocol between the servers and the devices is UDP, usually the packets are very small, but there are really a LOT of packets. the network is also somewhat complex, and is deployed on a large area physically. i'll have 150-300 of these devices, each generating up to 100+ packets per second, and several network switches, perhaps on 2 different subnets. Question I'm looking for some solution that will allow me to monitor all this mess, how many packets are sent, where, how do they move through the network, bandwidth utilization, throughput, stuff like that. what would you recommend to achieve this? BTW Playing nice with windows is a requirement.

• Lightweight, low cost enterprise backup solution

  Looking for a backup solution primarily for Windows clients (XP/7), that will either back up to 2 different servers (1 on site, 1 off site - internet - can be our own server), or back up to 1 server and then we would need to somehow backup that server offsite/internet. By lightweight, I mean the backup client software should not eat up much memory and processor since some of the client machines are older. I am used to using Crashplan for home use - the pricing is nice for the amount of backup I get, and it works great / easy to install and get going - I can back up to my own machines locally and over the net. However, the price is going to be a little steep for enterprise level backup, 1500+ machines. Possibly ZManda and Bacula are good choices to consider? Are they light weight? Can the clients/agents be set to go over the net and/or multiple backup servers?

• Need personal music collection streaming solution

  I used to use Opera and it's built in media server feature for some time and it both worked and looked really well. It's dead now and i'm in search of a decent audio streaming solution (Windows 8) to be able to stream my music collection via http to work or whatever.. I tried couple of PHP scripts but they all looked really awful, also, tried couple of solutions mentioned here at Superuser but i wasn't really satisfied.. I tried vibestreamer as well and while it looks really nice i'm not really into installing it as an application. I've set up an WAMP server which i intend to use in this purpose. I'd be mostly satisfied with a way to browse my collection folders and pick the one i want to play, no playlists and various sorting features a la iTunes. Any suggestions? Thanks

  we are looking into building a commercial vod service and I'm doing research on the subject. We need the video to be protected with DRM so users cant rip/copy (i realise its mostly useless but the lawyers demand it from us) and the server solution to be scalable and able to distrubute content in hd to a high number of clients. Besides, we would need to be able to develop a player integrated with the payment system, so users that havent bought access would for example only see the first 30 seconds of video and then have the playback interrupted, or only be able to watch video for 72h after payment. Also it would be nice if we could distribute video to mobile platforms like android/wp8/ios but thats not a priority at the moment. I have zero experience on that topic so I would greatly appreciate any feedback or giving me stuff to read about like protocols or key phrases i should know. Thanks

• Remote Software Solution that Acts as a Client

  I am looking for something that I am not sure exists. I have a remote computer that will not allow incoming traffic due to ISP blocking of ports(basically double NAT situation that I am unable to get around). I am wondering if I have a computer acting as a client, is there any solution out there that will allow remote access to the computer. I do have other servers on the net that have static IP's that the computer could initiate a connection with. I am thinking of using Debian Linux, However computer is not built yet so OS is not overly important at this point.

  I have about 70 pc's with exactly same hardware. I decided to automate turning on and off. I took 1 PC. Here is what I've done: Changed bios configuration so that now pc's waking when I turn on AC switch Installed Windows XP and configured so that I can turn off remotelly, changed workgroup name to "WG1", and pc name to "ExamPC" Then created acronis backup image of this pc I installed this image in several PC's and tried to test All worked well till windows opened. The problem is, all tested PC's started Windows nearly at the same time, and all of them popped up error Duplicate name exist. I can't figure out any solution. Any suggestions?

  I'm trying to put together a solution for my family (wife + three kids). At the moment I have one newish desktop and a couple of aging laptops. There are always arguments over who should have the fast desktop. I'm thinking I would like to invest in a new powerful server and then run virtual desktops for each user off the server so that each user would have the same experience regardless of which actual PC they were using. I would like to use just a Linux based desktop, but unfortunately I need to support some Windows games for the kids. I've not tried wine for the games but would be willing to give it a try. Any advice on what the setup should be would be most appreciated.

  Need help according to scenario given: Client end PCs: 400 + Network : Server 1 (Linux) : 192.168.2.0/24 (For Application, Internet not working) GW: 192.168.2.1 Clients: 192.168.2.1 - 254 Server 2 (Linux) : 192.168.3.0/24 (For Internet users) GW: 192.168.3.1 Clients: 192.168.3.2 - 254 Server 2 is connected to DSL Broadband. Server 1 and Server 2 both are on same physical network i.e. Same switches. Current issue: i have to deploy a file and print server but this server will be accessed by both (192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x) one same workgroup. as both subnets are on same switched network. Limitations: Currently there is no hardware routers and firewall. Need to complete this task with Linux / Windows / AD. Tested / Worked so far: Configured one PC with two NIC's With the IPS: NIC 1 : 192.168.3.2 GW: 192.168.3.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 NIC 2 : 192.168.2.2 GW: Empty Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Kindly provide any solution what should i do to get sharing enable on both Subnets.   We are currently looking for a new backup solution. Our current network is 5 remote location with a tape backup in each plant. Right now we are looking at a MPLS VPN and running backups out of our main plant. The main thing that we backup are user private folders and department files. And each plant has it's own file server that houses CAD drawings. My main plan is to have every thing but that CAD drawing at the main faculty. We would start with a main backup of the drawing files and then do change backups back to the main plant. Besides tapes what would be the best way to backup. Our contact at Pc Connection is point us toward a Tandberg Data device.

  I'm looking to set up a server for my small startup. I have a few employees and would like to use my computer at home to provide them all with workstations. Each workstation should have the same collection of software installed but each user's workstation should be completely separate from the others. I need each user to be able to remotely log in to their workstation (using TeamViewer or something like it) and I want to be able to monitor their workflow from my screen.   I have been playing with the Command Window in Visual Studio (View-Other Windows-Command Window). It is great for several mouse-free scenarios. (The autocompleting file "Open" command rocks in a non-trivial solution.) That success got me thinking and experimenting: Possibility 1.1: You can use the Alias commands to create custom commands Possibility 1.2: You can use the Shell command to run arbitrary executables and specify parameters (and pipe the result to the output or command windows) Possibility 2: A previously setup external tool definition (with project-relative path variables) could be run from the command window What I am stuck on is: There doesn't appear to be a way to send parameters to an aliased command (and thus the underlying Shell call) There doesn't appear to be a way to use project/solution relative paths ($SolutionDir/$ProjectDir) on a Shell call Using absolute paths in Shell works, but is fragile and high-maintenance (one alias for each needed use case). Typically you want the command to run against a file relative to your project/solution. It seems you can't run the traditional external tools (Tools-External Tools...) in the command window Ultimately I want the external tool functionality in the command window in some way. Can anyone see a way to do this? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? So my questions: Can an "external tool" of some sort (using relative project/solution path parameters) be used in the Command Window? If yes, How? If no, what might be a suitable alternative?

• Right solution for /etc/hosts file reset on reboot

  i've just installed funtoo and after setting the FQDN on /etc/conf.d/hostname i noticed when setting a list of aliases in /etc/hosts file it get overwtiten on each reboot. Someone points to set the aliases to 127.0.0.2 ip address but that's not a valid solution for me. Could someone point me to the file where i should place entries like 127.0.0.1 local.foo 127.0.0.1 local.bar in order to make them persist in /etc/hosts after rebooting? Thanks! PD: I think openresolv could be the one who is overwritting the file.
