• Ubuntu 9.10 desktop installation via USB (boot)

  I have made a live boot USB using the UnetBootIn tool for Ubuntu 9.10. I have Windows XP SP2 installed as the primary OS, and I want to make a partition for Ubuntu. But when I try to boot it via USB, it just goes to boot menu of Ubuntu, then I enter the default type for installation. After that nothing happens, just the Ubuntu logo shows up and just that nothing happens after that. I can try the simpler task also i.e. install via CD but I want to know what's not working with this USB boot method. Thanks in advance.

  Hello, I'm using: Vista SP2 Visual Studio 2010 professional edition SQL Server 2008 Express R2 Dev Server (Cassini) This question has been asked several times. Unfortunately, I didn't find yet an answer that exactly appropriate for me, so it's not possible to apply the solutions I find on the web. I find solutions for Win XP, 7, 2003, sql server 2005. But not for the above combination. I just don't why this problem started a couple days ago. I removed sql server and added it again, but no good result. Either an answer to the question or links to resources will be helpful. Thanks for helping.

• Replication in PG 9 between Windows and Linux boxes

  I have PostgreSQL 9 running on Windows 2003 SP2. I am trying to replicate it on a Fedora 12 system running PostgreSQL 9 as well. I am hitting this error message: /usr/pgsql-9.0/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/pgsql/9.0/data/ -p 5432 2011-02-11 17:43:26 ISTFATAL: incorrect checksum in control file Because of firewall restrictions, I could not follow the official instructions to the letter. Instead, I zipped the contents of the data directory when the server was offline and copied that to the Linux box. I ran a sha1deep on both directories and there were no mismatches. I changed the rights so that only the postgres user and group had access to the files. Now, what can I do for replication to work? I tried with a 'pg_dumpall', but the system complains that the database IDs do no match.

• Removing connections to network printers that no longer exist

  I'm trying to delete some network printer connections from a Windows Server 2003 (SP2) machine because the printer shares no longer exist. Windows shows the printers' status as "Printer not found on server, unable to connect"; this is expected; the printers are now on a different server. Only one machine ever connected to the printer shares; it no longer needs to and I'd like to clean it up. However, when I try to delete the connections, I get an error message: --------------------------- Remove Printer --------------------------- Printer connection cannot be removed. Operation could not be completed. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- The "solutions" I've found online seem to be more voodoo than anything (and they still don't work!). Does anybody know how I can delete these long-gone printers?

• taskmgr.exe 100% CPU Usage

  Hi. I have 2 IBM servers Intel Xeon Dual core with 2gb RAM. the problem is that Taskmanager uses one full core when i open it. The same happens when i copy files in the explorer. OS: Windows 2003 Server Things i tried: Installed all updates They has kaspersky anti virus and they previously had Nod32. All drivers installed OK. All unused devices are disabled in the bios. Reinstalled win 2003 SP2. No conflict in drivers Tried opening via remote desktop and the problem continues.   I receive the following sync error in Outlook 2007 SP2: Your server administrator has limited the number of items you can open simultaneously. Try closing messages you have opened or removing attachments and images from unsent messages you are composing. It is stopping me updating another user's calendar, which is open within my Outlook. Change are simply not syncing, either way. Is there a fix for this, e.g. increasing the number of permitted connections on the Exchange Server? We are using Exchange Server 2007 on a domain.

• Windows 2003 SP1 terminal server printers Disappear after reboot - HP laserjet 4240

  had working PCL6 laserjet 4240 driver. needed to downgrade to PCl5, tried but did not get clean install. tried again and it seemed to work (this is 2003 enterprise terminal server SP2) Have over 40 working laserjets (5, 4000, 4100 and 18 of the 4240) After normal nightly reboot the 18 4240 printers were 'gone'. Worked w/Microsoft who said bad HP driver issues - weird since they work on other terminal servers. downloaded latest version, etc. from HP site and can NOT get to work. As soon as I install, then do a Net Stop Spool and Net Start Spooler the printer is 'gone'. Current workaround is to use HP 4000 PCL5 drivers for all of these 4240 printers.

• How can I tell what user account is being used by a service to access a network share on a Windows 2008 server?

  I've got a third-party app/service running on a Windows 2003 SP2 server that is trying to fetch something from a network share on Windows 2008 box. Both boxes are members of an AD domain. For some reason, the app is complaining about having insufficient permissions to read/write to the store. The app itself doesn't have any special options for acting on the authority of another user account. It just asks for a UNC path. The service is running with a "log on as" setting of Local System account. I'd like to confirm what account it's using when trying to communicate with the network share. Conversely, I'd also like more details on if/why it's being rejected by the Windows 2008 network share. Are there server-side logs on 2008 that could tell me exactly why a connection attempt to a share was rejected?

  Hello all, I am trying to connect to a SVN server in order to import my project into it with svn+ssh authentication method. I am using the NetBeans IDE (6.8) with subversion plugin installed on Windows XP SP2. I have plink installed with its path set in the Windows PATH env variable. When I use the similar looking repository URL (XXXX and YYYY replaced with sensible things) svn+ssh://XXXX@YYYY/home/dce/svn/trunk along with this external tunnel command plink -l <myUserName> -i C:\\privateKey.ppk I keep getting this error: org.tigris.subversion.javahl.ClientException: Network connection closed unexpectedly I searched about it on the Internet and tried many things but didn't work out. Please help if anybody has some idea what may be going wrong. Thanks a lot in advance.

• Why doesn’t windows explorer show my removable / USB drive even though the command prompt does ?

  I'm running WinXP SP2. Around 50% of the time, when I slot in my USB drive. Windows explorer refuses to show the drive. If I click on the Safely remove hardware icon on the tray, I can see a menu item for the drive - say drive G: (the light on the USB drive is also on) If I type in G: into the address bar of explorer, it says 'Cannot find...' If I type in G: into a command prompt window, it works and I can do a dir to see the list of directories on the drive. To fix this, I've to remove-reinsert the pen-drive. But doing it every day is annoying. Also this happens only on this machine.. I use this drive on my home machine and it works flawlessly each time. Can anyone suggest things that I could try ? • exchange 2007 - non email users in the GAL

  We have a fairly new Exchange 2007 SP2 install with some GAL issues - basically when you browse the GAL from Outlook 2007 there are users listed that are not email users. If you look in Exchange under recipient configuration these users don't exist. They're AD users, but were never configured in Exchange, yet for some reason they show up in the GAL. The GAL seems to update correctly if new users are added or existing accounts are modified. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on this? I have other Exchange 2007 installs that are fine and don't have this issue. This install was completely clean, no migration or anything of that nature.

  I have some problem when I use Remote Desktop, here some description. I set some application to autorun each time Administrator (console) was login on W2K3 SP2 server I use Remote Desktop from XP SP3, using the same login as Administrator It creates a new session with the same username and the application starts autorun which make duplicity in application I just hoping i can enforce the Remote Desktop client to connect into only one session (console session), toying with Group Policy setting, successfully enforce the one session, but whenever i close remote desktop (disconnect) the console got disconnected too (which I didn't want it to behave like that). I also try some setting to limit connection, still it doesn't behave as I want it too. Simple i just want to use 1 session, but each time we close remote desktop the session still alive, much like when we use VNC solution (RealVNC, UltraVNC, TinyVNC etc.) Any solution(s)?

Server is running: Win Server 2008 w/ SP2 (64 bit) Backup Exec 2010 I am backing up to a Tandberg T24 tape library.

  It doesn't matter who I am logged in as I am getting the following error in the mmc console when I launch the firewall advanced settings There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap in You do not have the correct permissions to open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security console, You must be a member of the Administrators group or the Network Operators group to perform this task. For more information, contact your system administrator. Error code: 0x5. Ive tried processmonitor to identify what permission is being denied but no luck. If I run netsh directly I get access denied as well. This is running windows server 2008 SP2. And yes I was running as an administrator. Any ideas?

• Config xampp never to cache pages from localhost

  Hello everyone: I am not a webmaster, and that was exactly the reason why I installed XAMPP 1.7.2 on Windows XP SP2 instead of manually configuring Apache, MySQL and PHP to cooperate each other. Now I am having to problem to disable caching pages from localhost. Some suggested just force the browser not to cache, using Firefox web developer bar or something similar; but I feel it would be better if I could configure the Apache server in XAMPP to never allow pages from localhost to be cached. I guess this is done somewhere in httpd.conf? LoadModule cache_module modules/mod_cache.so Would this module be helpful in this case? Doc here : mod_cache I am not very sure this would resolve the problem. Could anyone confirm this approach feasible? I'd like to work it out myself, given the fact that I am on the right track... • GIMP Slow Startup

  Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Software Deployment on Active Directory - Schema Issue

  We have two servers, one running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and one running Windows Server 2008 R2. Both servers have their own versions of Group Policy Management (1.0.2 on 2003 and 6.0.0.1 on 2008). We are wanting to migrate everything over to the newer 2008 server, including software deployment. However, when I try to add a new software package using a .msi file, I get the following error: "The schema for the software installation data in the Active Directory does not match the required schema." I have tried two separate software packages and get the same error on the 2008 server. However, when I do the same on the 2003 server, it adds the software package without any problems. The .msi files I am using are up-to-date - one is the most recent version of Google Chrome. Is this problem caused by the different versions of the OS, or the Group Policy Management program? How do we "upgrade" our Active Directory to allow software deployment on the 2008 server? Thanks.

  I have an Exchange 2003 SP2 single backend server with an SSL cert. I was having trouble getting OMA to work so I found a MS article about making a reg hack and creating a new Exchange-OMA virtual directory. I am able to connect and access content from my mailbox by using secure mail.domainname.com/oma and using my credentials. ActiveSync was not working on a Windows mobile phone or iPhone. I found another article about using Forms Based Authenication and SSL on a single Exchange server environment and the fix was to elliminate FBA and SSL for the Exchange virtual directory. That allows ActiveSync to now work. I have very few mobile users, but they are management, so I need to make ActiveSync work but I would like to get back to using SSL. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379 Any ideas about this setup? • vista winsxs folder eats disk space

  My machine has been running Vista Ultimate 64-Bit for about two years now. ServicePacks SP1 and SP2 are installed, too. The system partition has a size of 55 GB, which should be quite comfortable under normal circumstances, but about 40GB (no typo) are used by the Windows-Folder, especially the subfolder winsxs, which takes about 35 GB. I have already uninstalled as many programs as possible and did run compcln.exe, to reduce it, but this only gained 2-3 GB. What can I do to clean up without risking system stability? I'm a software developer and this is my daily work environment, which means - I can't risk to get strange side-effects from blindly deleting stuff. - You can maybe deduce some typical usage patterns from this information. Any suggestions?

  I have one NIC on the machine loaded XP on the Hyper-V and had chosen the network as virtual switch. No LAN and no internet shows up on the client. Am I missing something? it used to work in 2008-R2.   What is the "box mode" (for a lack of a better word) in Firefox? How can I exit it again? If I hold down the Ctrl key and left click while the cursor is over some element on a page it becomes boxed: Firefox seems to go into some special mode. What is this mode for? How can I go back to normal mode? Installed add-ons in Firefox: BetterPrivacy 1.29, NoScript 1.9.0.6 and SQLite Manager 0.4.7. (Microsoft .NET Framework Assistent 1.0 is disabled.) • Re-using port 443 for another service - is it possible?

  The ultimate goal is to allow a remote data connection service to operate on port 443 on a the SQL server. The application accessing the connection is behind a firewall and it is because of the client's reluctance to open another port that I have been asked to try and get this working. The current environment is Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) and SQL Server 2005. IIS is not installed, but when I try and install the third party connection software (SequeLink) it won't as it reports something is still configured on/using port 443. Netstat does not show anything listening on the port and I've tried editing the system32\drivers\etc\services file removing any reference to port 443 and also using sc delete to delete the HTTP and HTTPFilter (HTTP SSL in services console) services to see if this would help. Rebooting after each change. What could still be using the port? Is what I'm trying even possible (I have my doubts but have to investigate every avenue)? Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

• optimizing file share performance on Win2k8?

  We have a case where we're accessing a RAID array (drive E:) on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 x86 box. (Recently installed, nothing other than SQL Server 2005 on the server.) In one scenario, when directly accessing it (E:\folder\file.xxx) we get 45MBps throughput to a video file. If we access the same file on the same array, but through UNC path (\server\folder\file.xxx) we get about 23MBps throughput with the exact same test. Obviously the second test is going through more layers of the stack, but that's a major performance hit. What tuning should we be looking at for making the UNC path be closer in performance to the direct access case? Thanks, Kirk (corrected: it is CIFS not SMB, but generalized title to 'file share'.) (additional info: this happens during the read from a single file, not an issue across multiple connections. the file is on the local machine, but exposed via file share. so client and file server are both same Windows 2008 server.)
