  • Java memory usage increases when App is used, but doesnt decrease when not being used.

    I have a java application that uses a lot of memory when used, but when the program is not being used, the memory usage doesnt go down. Is there a way to force Java to release this memory? Because this memory is not needed at that time, I can understand to reserve a small amount of memory, but Java just reserves all the memory it ever uses. It also reuses this memory later but there must be a way to force Java to release it when its not needed. System.gc is not working.

  • For what purposes have YOU used T4?

    T4 has existed for several years in Visual Studio, but doesn't get a lot of attention. However, for those that know it, there seems to be some very creative and useful purposes. I am researching some different ways that T4 is used, and I would appreciate to hear how YOU may have used it for real life scenarios. I am primarily interested in non-standard and creative uses. Some interesting examples: Phil Haack uses T4 to create static CSS files from .less To Generate WPF and Silverlight Dependency Properties using T4 Templates Note: I realize this is a discussion-oriented question, but the answers could be helpful to others.   • How * tag can be used in CSS?

    I'm trying to understand how a background image is used in a css button. It seems the image is much larger than the button, still the corners are matched to the button(resulting a rounded corner button). It seems it is related to .btn *. I couldn't find any reference about how * can be used. Can you explain how the image is rendered in the button, using the * tag? I assume * will match any element.   • Encoding a email address that can be used as part of a URL in codeigniter

    Is there a way to encode a email address that can be used as a part of a url in codeigniter?. I need to decode back the email address from the url. What I am trying to do is just a -forgotten password recovery- thing. I send a confirmation link to the user's email address, the link needs to be like ../encodedEmail/forgottenPasswordCode (with the forgottenPasswordCode updated in the db for the user with the submitted email). When the user visits that link, I decode the email(if the email - forgottenPasswordCode pair is in the table), i allow them to reset their password (and i reset forgottenPasswordCode back to null). I could just do a loop -checking the table with a select query- (or) -set that forgottenPasswordCode column unique, so i keep generating on a insert failure(would that be a lot faster ?)- until I generate a forgottenPasswordCode that doesn't already exist in the table. But the guy I do this for would not accept it this way:). He wants the checking be done with the user's email, he thinks its much faster. I am working with codeigniter, I used its encode() function, it seems to produce characters like '-slashes-' at times that breaks the encoded-email-string. Any other ideas?

  • Changing label content programmatically from within a DataTemplate used in a DataGrid column header

    I'm dynamically creating DataGrid columns (based on an event from my ViewModel) and programmatically adding them to an existing DataGrid. Each column uses a generic HeaderTemplate by setting it to a DataTemplate that has been identified in the xaml. The DataTemplate contains two labels in which needs their content needs to be changed upon creation of the DataGrid column. How would this be done? I understand that the DataTemplate uses the ContentPresenter but I am having trouble accessing it within a dynamically created DataGrid column. Code is as follows: xaml: (template used to format the DataGrid column header): <DataTemplate x:Key="columnTemplate"> <StackPanel> <Label Padding="0" Name="labelA"/> <Separator HorizontalAlignment="Stretch"/> <Label Padding="0" Name="labelB"/> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> c#: (used to dynamically create a DataGrid column and add it to an existing DataGrid) var dataTemplate = FindResource("columnTemplate") as DataTemplate; var column = new DataGridTextColumn(); column.HeaderTemplate = dataTemplate; DataGrid1.Columns.Add(column); I would like to then access both labelA and labelB and change the content.

  • Why is VB6 still so widely used?

    Note that this question is not meant to start an argument, I am genuinely curious: Back in the 90s I used to work for a large CPU maker and we were building some debuggers. All our core logic was in C++, but the GUI was made in VB6. We couldn't figure out MFC and it was too much a hassle. We glued together VB6 and C++ using COM which we created via ATL. Fast forward to 2009, having been mostly in the Java world I am looking at job boards and seeing more VB6 jobs than I expected. I genuinely thought that VB6 was extinct, especially since VB.NET supposedly solved a lot of the problems with the VB6 which at the time felt a lot like a scripting language than a true OOP language. So what happened? Why is new code still written in it? Isn't there a better way to glue C++ and VB.NET? Note that I haven't used VB.NET, I just understand that it is a much more "stricter" language than VB6 was. Even with Option Explicit or whatever it was.

    Has anyone successfully used Ant4Eclipse (http://www.ant4eclipse.org/) in combination with Project Lombok (http://projectlombok.org/)? Lombok provides annotations for removing boilerplate code; however, it doesn't appear to play nicely with Ant4Eclipse (headless compilation of Eclipse projects). For instance, the following Lombok sample compiles fine in Eclipse and javac: import lombok.Getter; public class LombokTest { private @Getter String foo; public LombokTest() { String s = this.getFoo(); } } But compiling with Ant4Eclipse's <buildJdtProject> yields the following: [javac] Compiling 1 source file [javac] ---------- [javac] 1.     Our application allows administrators to add “User Properties” in order for them to be able to tailor the system to match their own HR systems. For example, if your company has departments, you can define “Departments” in the Properties table and then add values that correspond to “Departments” such as “Jewelry”, “Electronics” etc… You are then able to assign a department to users. Here is the schema: In this schema, a User can have only one UserPropertyValue per Property, but doesn’t have to have a value for the property. I am trying to build a query that will be used in SSRS 2005 and also have it use the PropertyValues as the filter for users. My query looks like this: SELECT UserLogin, FirstName, LastName FROM Users U LEFT OUTER JOIN UserPropertyValues UPV ON U.ID = UPV.UserID WHERE UPV.PropertyValueID IN (1, 5) When I run this, if the user has ANY of the property values, they are returned. What I would like to have is where this query will return users that have values BY PROPERTY. So if PropertyValueID = 1 is of Department (Jewelry), and PropertyValueID = 5 is of EmploymentType (Full Time), I want to return all users that are in Department Jewelry that are EmployeeType of Full Time, can this be done? Here's a full data example: User A has Department(Jewelry value = 1) and EmploymentType(FullTime value = 5)User B has Department(Electronics value = 2) and EmploymentType(FullTime value = 5)User C has Department(Jewelry value = 1) and EmployementType(PartTime value = 6) My query should only return User A using the above query UPDATE: I should state that this query is used as a dataset in SSRS, so the parameter passed to the query will be @PropertyIDs and it is defined as a multi-value parameter in SSRS. WHERE UPV.PropertyValueID IN (@PropertyIDs)

  • Application HANGS UP if 3G connection is used (WiFi is OK)

    Hi, My application uses the following codes to connect to web site and download a web page for processing. HttpURLConnection c = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection(); c.setRequestMethod("GET"); c.setRequestProperty("User-Agent", "Mozilla/3.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.0; Windows NT)"); c.setRequestProperty("Accept-Language", "zh-hk"); c.setRequestProperty("Connection", "Keep-Alive"); c.setConnectTimeout(6000); // mTimeout is in seconds intTries = 3; do { c.connect(); if (c.getResponseCode() == 200) { break; } else { intTries --; } } while (intTries > 0); The codes are run in main thread only. If WiFi is being used, it is nice and clean. If 3G connection is being used, sometimes, it cannot get connected OR application HANGS. Is there any significant difference between handling WiFi and 3G ? Thanks.

For example, if you leave the FontFamily unspecified, styles notwithstanding, an element will take on the Font Family 'GlobalUserInterface'. In this case, can I determine programmatically what font is actually being used to render an element's text?
