• WPF parent-child window: binding reference problem

  I have a WPF Window that open a modal child window to load some data. Both window have a own viewmodel, now I have this problem: after I close the child window it seems still running in background! To close the child window I set DialogResult from viewmodel command; now, if I create a new data and then I edit it from parent window (with the child window closed before), the child window still capture the property changed event for the properties previously bind. How can avoid this? I would clear every reference with data when I close modal window. Which is the best practise to do it?

• Telerik window automatically opens after every page refresh

  I am using Telerik RadControls in my project and and have a menu where I have an 'About' button. When I click the 'About' button a window pops up describing the application. The problem is if I refresh the page or navigate to another page then back to the first page the window automatically pops up. • Can I force window to open on top of other windows when opened by keyboard shortcut?

  I use SpaceFM as my primary file manager on Ubuntu. I typically open folder directly by keyboard shortcuts, so, e.g. Ctrl+Super+W opens my Work folder. Specifically, I use execute the command spacefm -w /home/rasmus/Work/ by the above shortcut, with the -w ensuring that SpaceFM opens a new window. However, this new window is not always open on top of the last active window on the workspace. This is rather annoying, as it means I sometimes have to "dig" for the newly opened window. So, my question is: Is there something additional I can add to the executed command that will ensure that the fresh window is opened on top? Alternative solutions to the same effect are welcome.

• How can I make the draggable window border thicker, without changing the appearance?

  When you want to resize a window in gnome (as well as in other systems) you can click-and-hold at the window's border and than drag it. The problem is (and do correct me if I'm wrong here) that the draggable border is just a couple of pixels thick in gnome. That tends to be a little frustrating, and contributes to my wrist pains from using the mouse, as it requires very careful movement of the mouse. How can I change the thickness of the area I can click in order to resize a window? I don't want to increase the appearance of the window border, I'm not talking about eye candy here. I want to fine tune this functionality where I can resize a window by dragging its border. Is there a setting somewhere that will change this?

• How to customise window decoration whilst using Compiz on Xubuntu?

  I have installed Compiz on Xubuntu 11.10 with sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz --replace ccp & In the process the XFCE window decoration theme is overridden by that of Compiz (Gtk) which uses the Adwaita theme instead of the Greybird theme. Since Gtk is doing window decoration, I cannot change it back using the XFCE settings. I just need compiz for scale and window switch and I would like to return window decoration to XFCE (Xfwm4) or to be able to change the Gtk window decoration theme. How can I do that? I have found part of the (workaround) answer already: download Greybird Gtk theme install theme (here is where I failed I think) use dconf-editor to change the Gtk theme in org.gnome.desktop.interface The problem really at stage 2 is where do I place the theme? I tried in ~/.themes/ and then changed the value of gtk-theme in the editor to Greybird. But I saw no change.

• Connecting PC to TV via HDMI/DVI: Windows XP doesn't allow the appropriate screen resolution

  I have a computer that is connected to the living room TV (a Panasonic) via HDMI. There is no other monitor connected. My problem is that the computer, which is running Windows XP, does not allow me to set the proper resolution for the TV. Both the graphics adapter and the TV should support the 1280x720 resolution, but it cannot be selected - the only available options are 1280x600 and 800x600, both in the "native" Windows dialog box and the custom Intel graphics options dialog box. Do anyone have a suggestion for a solution for this? Things I've thought of: Setting the resolution directly in the registry (where?) Installing some "custom" monitor driver (the TV manufacturer does not appear to provide any, currently the "generic" one is used) Details on the setup: Connection: DVI output on the computer via a passive DVI-HDMI adapter to the HDMI input on the TV, audio is run on a separate link, the TV is able to combine video and audio without any problem, the problem is there regardless of whether or not the audio is connected. The connection is several meters long through some walls, for this reason using a VGA cable instead is not an option. Note that the report explicitly says that the TV supports 1280x720. Still, I am not allowed to select it in Graphics Options, only 1280x600 and 800x600 is available. For 800x600, there's a lot of black around the edges; for 1280x600, the screen is "zoomed" so the edges of the monitor image (like the taskbar) is not visible. Other: The computer is running Windows XP. More recent versions of Windows are not an option (I have no licence). Linux is probably not an option (some of the video streaming sites I plan to use do not support it, I think) I wrote the rest of the details below. Thanks for any help!!   My friend has a Windows XP computer that doesn't show the colored background on pages, it's always white. On top of that some pictures won't show up, there will just be an empty white frame. Also when you left click on a folder, instead of opening it up, it opens up a new window that turns out to be the search results window. I've never heard of these problems before, and I can't find any information on the internet about it. I assume it's a virus deeply imbedded into the system, but no virus scanner has found it. • How do I share a complete XP disk so it can be seen from a Windows 7 system?

(both computers can see the internet etc so I know the network it’s self is working) I have a normal home network with a Windows XP machine on it and the new Windows 7 (64 bit) machine. So I can transfer the files to the new Windows 7 machine, I wish to share the complete disk (and all files) from the Windows XP machine and access them from the Windows 7 machine. Is there a step by step set of instructions for doing this anywhere? So fare I have: put both computers into the same workgroup put the windows 7 machine into work network mode so it can see the XP machine in the work group shared the XP disk as read only But when I try to access a lot of the folders on the XP disks, I am told I am not allowed to access them. (I was not asked for any passwords by the windows 7 machine when I accessed the XP machine. The XP machine just has its default account with no password set on it)

• Apache Tomcat 6.0.29 startup causing Win XP SP3 reboot

  Some of our Windows XP Developer machines die (black screen - no ping) when starting up Tomcat from a console. This only happens if the Tomcat debug console window is displayed (not minimised). When minimised, the startup / run is successful. I've checked for Tomcat logs and the crash sessions produce empty (zero bytes) tomcat log files. No system logs exist and no crash dump is created even though this is enabled in the Windows settings. The machine is dual screen and another machine with the same image has the same issue. The only clue is just before the crash, one of the monitors the system reports "Cannot display video mode 1280x1024" (approximate error, didn't write it down). Is there a way I can get Windows to produce log files of this crash session? Beyond running Tomcat as a service / minimised window, how can I fix (or even investigate)?

In no case should anything else than this specific window show up on the secondary screen: no other applications, no dialog boxes. If possible, I want to restrict the mouse pointer to the primary screen as well. I tried UltraMon, but I think my requirements go beyond its features. Any ideas?

• Windows 7 XP Mode disable time sync

  So I've tried the trick from Virtual PC 2007, adding the following section to the vmc configuration file: <components> <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> </host_time_sync> </components> Later someone suggested VPC doesn't want the components level so added this instead: <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> <frequency type="integer">15</frequency> <threshold type="integer">10</threshold> </host_time_sync> When I start up XP Mode (Microsoft Virtual PC) it completely ignores any of these two configuration changes and if I change the clock it's instantly reset to the host time again. I've also obviously disabled the Windows Time service but as it's not joined to a domain or set up with a source it shouldn't be involved anyway. I need to test an application over a few midnight passes and thought the XP Mode machine would be perfect, so I didn't have to mess with my workstation clock... is there any way to get the VPC guest to not sync time with the host? This is easy in Hyper-V ;p

• How to restore infrared support in Windows XP?

  My infrared port is not working on my Windows XP SP 3 (Thinkpad X60). I can see it Device Manager, and it's status is, that it is working probably. The problem manifests in several ways. Originally I was trying to transfer data from my Polar RS800CX watch, and the Polar ProTrainer 5 software gave me the this error message: "Communication port couldn't be opened". Then I tried to connect the watch to another computer, and the infrared connection was established immediately. I then tried to connect the other computer to my Thinkpad X60. The other computer again immediately showed the Wireless Link icon "'computername' is in range" in the notification area. But nothing is shown on the Thinkpad, and a file transfer to the Thinkpad is unsuccessful with an error message that reports that "the target machine actively refused it [the connection]". This brings me to conclude that the infrared support in Windows on the Thinkpad is somehow broken. This is further supported by the fact that I can't find the "Wireless Link" icon in the Control Panel and when I try to run the irprops.cpl nothing happens. So the question is, how to reinstall the infrared support? Some of the solutions that I have explored is: I have tried to disable/enable the infrared in the BIOS - to trick a re-installation. The IR modules settings on the other computer that can get a successful IR connection is an exact match to the ThinkPad that can't get a connection. The was a problem in Windows XP SP 2 with the Wireless Link icon - MS KB article - but that hotfix can't be applied on SP 3 installation. I also guess that the hotfix is included in SP 3. Any other suggestions?

• Making the iPhone work with stripped down Windows XP

  Hi, this is my first time posting here and I have a really specific question. I have an ASUS eee 901 running Windows XP Home. I had everything working well, but then I decided to improve performance by moving Windows to the smaller but faster internal SSD. I used Nlite to strip down Windows, following the instructions here: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:nlitexp I now have a very lightweight installation of XP home with SP3 and all the current updates. Almost everything is working really well. I have installed iTunes and I CAN sync with no problems. However, each time I plug in my iPhone 3GS (latest firmware), Windows tries and fails to install drivers. The Found New Hardware Wizard launches, but nothing I do will make it complete successfully, with the result that the iphone does not show up in Windows as removable storage, or as a camera. When I launch the Camera and Scanner Wizard, it shows only my webcam, not the iphone. I have verified that I have the following files in place: Windows\System32\ptpusb.dll (regsvr32 successful) Windows\System32\ptpusd.dll (entry point not found, can not be registered) Windows\System32\usbaaplrc.dll (entry point not found, can not be registered) Windows\System32\drivers\usbaapl.sys Windows\System32\drivers\usbscan.sys Windows\System32\drivers\usbstor.sys Does anyone know if some other file is required or if there's some other element preventing this from working? Edit (From posted answer) I did select Cameras & Camcorders, and my webcam is working fine for video & still capture.

• Windows XP SP3 client over NAT to a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 file server disconnection

  we just transferred a pilot group from our old(!!) Netware infrastructure to an Microsoft infrastructure. Since then, our users got problems accessing their files. They all experience disconnection from the mapped drives. The file server is access via a WAN connection by a firewall (Sonicwall) between both network and we do NAT. All clients have Windows XP SP3 and the file server is an Windows 2008 R2 SP1. On the file server I got many Event Id 2012. Many post over the Internet suggested a problem between the SMB protocol and NAT. We need a short term fix to continue to transfer users from Netware to Microsoft after what will work to remove the NATing. I found this MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2444558 that suggested a kind of workaround for Windows 7 clients but I can found anything for Windows XP. Anyone can help me with this ? We don't want to stop the project and do a network job before migrating. Regards. Update: Our few Windows 7 computers doesn't seem to have this issue.

• After update, suddenly lost ability to access Windows Server 2008 R2 shares from Windows XP clients

  Today I lost the ability to see my Windows Server 2008 R2 shares from any of my 3 Windows XP machines in my small office. The 5 Win7 machines haven't been affected (they are still able to browse/access the 2008 server), but none of my WinXP machines can access the 2008R2 server anymore. Yesterday (and for the previous year) everything was working fine. I do not have a domain setup. I can still access Win7 shares from WinXP clients. Browsing the server logs, I see that the following update was installed last night: > Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for > installation. • Everyone can access my Windows 7 Homegroup file shares - Even Windows XP computers

  I have 3 computers in my network, two running Windows 7 and one running Windows XP. I've set up a homegroup on both Windows 7 computers. Also, all computers are in the same Workgroup. The problem is that one of the Windows 7 computers makes all shares accessible to the entire Workgroup instead of just sharing to the Homegroup as it should be. I created the file share in Windows 7 via right-click in the explorer, then click on "Share For" - "Homegroup (Read/Write)" (translated from German, so the actual wording may be different). Also, when I look at the file sharing properties of that folder, Windows Explorer informs me that Users must have a valid account and password for this Computer to access drive shares. Unfortunately this is not true. Being in the same Workgroup is enough to get access. Homegroup restrictions work as expected on my other Windows 7 computer. When trying to browse those shares from the XP computer, I get a dialog asking for a login and password. What might cause homegroup restrictions to fail and how can I fix this?

• Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port significantly slower under Windows 7 comparing to Windows XP

  Not sure if this question should be asked here or on SuperUser but if we get an answer here it may be useful for others here I am using a Prolific USB-to-Serial adapter based on the Prolific chip to use with a device on serial port. I have the latest version of the driver installed: 1.3.0 (2010-7-15). When I use my device with this adapter on my main Windows 7 (32bit) system it takes 8-9 seconds to send a command through to the device. However, when I do the same thing on a different Windows XP system (an old laptop I borrowed for testing) it only takes 2-3 seconds. I have made sure that the port settings and other variables are the same between systems. I also tested on a third laptop (also running Windows 7) and again got a significant delay. So the question is if anyone else experienced the same problem and found a solution. I would like to avoid moving to an XP system for what I need to achieve so that's my last option. This is what I have done so far: 1) Changing Updates on local PC: Go to your Windows XP client and start a new Microsoft Management Console (MMC). At Start, Run, type MMC. Use Ctrl+M to add a new snap-in. Click Add, and then add the Group Policy Object Editor for the Local Computer. Click Close, and then click OK. Expand the Local Computer Policy. Under Computer Configuration, go to Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update. In the right-hand pane, double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location. Configure the settings to reflect my WSUS server. • Very slow browsing shared folder XP client/host

  I have a pretty straightforward setup where I'm storing media files on an XP pro machine, and sharing the folder to be accessed by other XP pro machines around the house. (Typically, there's only one client accessing the share at a time, although there may be several with the share mounted.) It's been working just fine for years, but I've recently started having some problems. A couple of days ago, the host PC had power disconnected while it was running. It was restarted and everything seemed fine initially, but since then browsing the shared folder from client machines has been extremely slow and actually reading data is all but impossible. The problem exists in every access method I've tried: Windows Explorer, VLC dialogs, command line, etc. My first thought was that the disk was experiencing problems, but there are no problems viewing the files locally on the host machine. My second thought was that there was a network problem on the host machine, so I removed and reinstalled drivers for the NIC with no change. My third thought was that there might've been a problem elsewhere on the network, so I swapped out hardware to no avail. I'm regrouping and trying to come up with a methodical approach to figuring out what might be wrong. I would of course be thrilled if you can suggest specific problems (Microsoft KB articles, etc.) that I might check, but I'm not expecting a silver bullet. If you can help me outline an approach to identify the problem (including recommended tools, e.g., disk checkers, network analyzers, etc.) I'd greatly appreciate it.

• How do I restart a Windows XP upgrade?

  Is there a registry tweek to tell Windows Setup to start over? It tries to continue where it left off after I reboot. I can get to the Recovery Console. I tried to go from SP2-SP3. It failed, and I couldn't get to Safe Mode. I put in the SP1 disk (I don't have an SP2 boot disk, just the upgrade package.) It ran a couple minutes then gave me the error "the signature for windows xp professional upgrade is invalid" error code 800b0100. I rebooted to Safe Mode. I get to Safe Mode then say "Window XP Setup can't run under Safe Mode" press ok to restart. I put the SP3 disk back in, trying to get the "repair" option I didn't ever see putting in the SP1 disk, and it tried to continue the SP1 install - on the 4th step, and then gave the same signature error above. I need to get it to start over, so I can get to the repair option, to go back to SP2 (or install SP1 then add SP2 to it). Is there a registry tweek to tell Windows Setup to start over?

  In Windows XP I can open "My Computer" and see all the hard drives. I can also see the explorer.exe process running among other processes in Task Manager. But after opening "My Computer", when I double click on one of the drives to open it, I get the following error message: Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search. Although I could detect and remove several suspicious files using Malwarebytes & Microsoft Security Essentials, the problem still remains. The interesting point is that if I right click on one folder and select Open or Explore from the menu bar, I can open the folder! but if I double click on the folder, it does not open and I get the above error message. How can I fix this problem? Any advice would be appreciated! Update: I formatted the C: drive (NTFS), a deep format, and installed a fresh Windows XP on it. I am not getting this error when I double click on C drive icon anymore. But the same error appears when I double click on other drive names. Maybe I should format them too!

• Disable XP disk check using FAT32

  Right now I'm using Windows XP and Macintosh on my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp. Sometimes my XP would crash and when I restarted it it would have to go through disk check, although it says I can skip it by pushing a key, but this never worked for me. I did a bit of research online on how to disable disk check and found chkntfs /x c: but when I tried this out in my cmd it said the disk is FAT32 format. I tried to convert my C: drive from FAT32 to NTFS by using convert c: /FS:NTFS but when I tried this it told me to locate my C: drive. I tried to type C: and Bootcamp but couldn't really get past it. Secondly, if that script didn't work, does anyone have any solution for these problems? Is there another way to disable disk check or is there another way for me to change my FAT32 to NTFS?
