• Where should I go to learn about networking? [closed]

  I wonder if anyone could recommend resource or resources such as a good book that: explains how all the important protocols work and interact. I’m interested in those that are relevant in a typical home network and used over the Internet explains in detail how ADSL Internet connections work to the level of depth necessary so that I’m able to tweak and measure performance settings starts from the beginning but attempts to provide proper understanding rather than idiot-oriented steps to follow Basically, I’m interested in how these technologies work and tend to be implemented in hardware and software rather than “here’s what to do if…” I’m interested in Computer Networking by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that title. It’s expensive but I could probably loan a copy for £3 from the library or so.

• WPF/MVVM - keep ViewModels in application component or separate?

  Hi all, I have a WPF application where I'm using the MVVM pattern. I get the VM activated for actions that require user input and thus need to activate views from the VM. I've started out separating the VMs into a separate component/assembly, partly because I see them as the unit testable part, partly because views should rely on VM, not the other way round. But when I then need to bring up a window, the window is not known by the VM. All introductions I find place the VM in the WPF/App component, thus eliminating the problem. • Real time embeddable http server library required

  Having looked at several available http server libraries I have not yet found what I am looking for and am sure I can't be the first to have this set of requirements. I need a library which presents an API which is 'pipelined'. Pipelining is used to describe an HTTP feature where multiple HTTP requests can be sent across a TCP link at a time without waiting for a response. I want a similar feature on the library API where my application can receive all of those request without having to send a response (I will respond but want the ability to process multiple requests at a time to reduce the impact of internal latency). So the web server library will need to support the following flow 1) HTTP Client transmits http request 1 2) HTTP Client transmits http request 2 ... 3) Web Server Library receives request 1 and passes it to My Web Server App 4) My Web Server App receives request 1 and dispatches it to My System 5) Web Server receives request 2 and passes it to My Web Server App 6) My Web Server App receives request 2 and dispatches it to My System 7) My Web Server App receives response to request 1 from My System and passes it to Web Server 8) Web Server transmits HTTP response 1 to HTTP Client 9) My Web Server App receives response to request 2 from My System and passes it to Web Server 10) Web Server transmits HTTP response 2 to HTTP Client Hopefully this illustrates my requirement. There are two key points to recognise. Responses to the Web Server Library are asynchronous and there may be several HTTP requests passed to My Web Server App with responses outstanding. Additional requirements are Embeddable into an existing 'C' application Small footprint; I don't need all the functionality available in Apache etc. Efficient; will need to support thousands of requests a second Allows asynchronous responses to requests; their is a small latency to responses and given the required request throughput a synchronous architecture is not going to work for me. Support persistent TCP connections Support use with Server-Push Comet connections Open Source / GPL support for HTTPS Portable across linux, windows; preferably more. • Recovering mail from hardrive (broken os).

  Hi, Friend of mine broke his Windows (doesn't boot). I will probably have to reinstall OS. I want to mount his hard drive in my OS to beck up some important files. He sad he uses Outlook express, but he Use Vista so I'm not sure it's Vistas Mail Client or Outlook. What files I have to copy to backup mail and adders book from Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail? Is it any good program for doing it automatically (for Linux or Windows)? If there are tools or special procedures for other mail clients (for example Thunderbird) you can also name them to make this question more generic.

• What is there so useful in the Decorator Pattern? My example doesn't work

  The book says: The decorator pattern can be used to extend (decorate) the functionality of a certain object I have a rabbit animal. And I want my rabbit to have, for example, reptile skin. Just want to decorate a common rabbit with reptile skin. I have the code. First I have abstract class Animal with everythig that is common to any animal: abstract class Animal { abstract public function setSleep($hours); abstract public function setEat($food); abstract public function getSkinType(); /* and more methods which for sure will be implemented in any concrete animal */ } I create class for my rabbit: class Rabbit extends Animal { private $rest; private $stomach; private $skinType = "hair"; public function setSleep($hours) { $this->rest = $hours; } public function setFood($food) { $this->stomach = $food; } public function getSkinType() { return $this->$skinType; } } Up to now everything is OK. Then I create abstract AnimalDecorator class which extends Animal: abstract class AnimalDecorator extends Animal { protected $animal; public function __construct(Animal $animal) { $this->animal = $animal; } } And here the problem comes. Pay attention that AnimalDecorator also gets all the abstract methods from the Animal class (in this example just two but in real can have many more). Then I create concrete ReptileSkinDecorator class which extends AnimalDecorator. It also has those the same two abstract methods from Animal: class ReptileSkinDecorator extends AnimalDecorator { public function getSkinColor() { $skin = $this->animal->getSkinType(); $skin = "reptile"; return $skin; } } And finaly I want to decorate my rabbit with reptile skin: $reptileSkinRabbit = ReptileSkinDecorator(new Rabbit()); But I can't do this because I have two abstract methods in ReptileSkinDecorator class. They are: abstract public function setSleep($hours); abstract public function setEat($food); So, instead of just re-decorating only skin I also have to re-decorate setSleep() and setEat(); methods. But I don't need to. In all the book examples there is always ONLY ONE abstract method in Animal class. And of course it works then. But here I just made very simple real life example and tried to use the Decorator pattern and it doesn't work without implementing those abstract methods in ReptileSkinDecorator class. It means that if I want to use my example I have to create a brand new rabbit and implement for it its own setSleep() and setEat() methods. OK, let it be. But then this brand new rabbit has the instance of commont Rabbit I passed to ReptileSkinDecorator: $reptileSkinRabbit = ReptileSkinDecorator(new Rabbit()); I have one common rabbit instance with its own methods in the reptileSkinRabbit instance which in its turn has its own reptileSkinRabbit methods. I have rabbit in rabbit. But I think I don't have to have such possibility. I don't understand the Decarator pattern right way. Kindly ask you to point on any mistakes in my example, in my understanding of this pattern. Thank you.

  I'm a programmer trying to fill a big hole in my understanding of networking basics. I've been reading a good book (Networking Bible by Sosinki) but I have been finding that there is a lot of "assumed" information contained, where terms/concepts are thrown at the reader without a proper introduction to them. I understand that a "route" is a path through a network. But I am struggling with visualizing some routing-based concepts. Namely: How do routes actually manifest themselves in the hardware? Are they just a list of IP addresses that get computed at the network layer, and then executed by the transport? What kind of data exists in a so-caleld routing table? Is a routing-table just the mechanism for holding these lists of IP address (read above)? What are the performance pros/cons for having a static route, as opposed to a dynamic route?

• Good tools for keeping the content in test/staging/live environments synchronized

  I'm looking for recommendations on automated folder synchronization tools to keep the content in our three environments synchronized automatically. Specifically, we have several applications where a user can upload content (via a File Upload page or a similar mechanism), such as images, pdf files, word documents, etc. In the past, we had the user doing this to our live server, and as a result, our test and staging servers had to be manually synchronized. Going forward, we will have them upload content to the staging server, and we would like some software to automatically copy the files off to the test and live servers EITHER on a scheduled basis OR as the files get uploaded. I was planning on writing my own component, and either set it up as a scheduled task, or use a FileSystemWatcher, but it occurred to me that this has probably already been done, and I might be better off with some sort of synchronization tool that already exists. On our web site, there are a limited number of folders that we want to keep synchronized. In these folders, it is an all or nothing - we want to make sure the folders are EXACT duplicates. This should make it fairly straightforward, and I would think that any software that can synchronize folders would be OK, except that we also would like the software to log changes. (This rules out simple BATCH files.) So I'm curious, if you have a similar environment, how did you solve the challenge of keeping everything synchronized. Are you aware of a tool that is reliable, and will meet our needs? If not, do you have a recommendation for something that will come close, or better yet, an open source solution where we can get the code and modify it as needed? (preferably .NET). Added Also, I DID google this first, but there are so many options, I am interested mostly in knowing what actually works well vs what they SAY works, which is why I'm asking here.

• Exchange 2010 Room Mailbox Calendar Permissions

  Exchange 2010 sp2 Outlook 2007/2010 Server 2008 I have managed to set up several room mailboxes in exchange, people are able to book the rooms and they get a response from the exchange server. this is brilliant. however users are unable to view the calendar of the room mailbox to see what times are available, in a ideal world I would like users to only see if the room is free or not. I dont want users to see the details of the meeting (title, description etc) I have been trying to do this using the following command Add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity meetingroom -User "Usergroup" -AccessRights AvailabilityOnly -DomainController AD-Server This throws the following error Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. • Clone a 2TB WD Green internal drive with bad sectors to a 3TB partitioned external

  I have a 2TB WD Black drive and would like to simply do a straight clone from a failing 3TB drive to it. Both are SATA. Will I be able to just install the new drive alongside the faulty one and then do the clone/rescue attempt with ddrescue or is there a better method? The faulty internal drive mentioned has bed sectors although am usually able to boot into Windows 7 Ultimate with it and navigate and access all my programs. I have been attempting some trials with an Ubuntu Live CD using ddrescue but am not sure I'm doing it right. I have a 3TB WD my book essential external which is GPT and have created a separate 2TB partition on it which I am trying to clone to. I assume I need to format the new drive first to NTFS? Can I do that via the Ubuntu Rescue Remix 12-04 live DVD that I've been booting with?

• Is there a way to bundle pdf tiles to a Kindle friendly file?

  I'm downloading PDF approach plates from Navigraph, and i have a folder per airport with files named after their corresponding approach / departure etc. Now I'd like to take such a folder with a bunch of PDF files, automatically generate an index and combine them to a single .mobi file that i can send to my Kindle. The index created can be very simple and consist of the file name (without the extension). Tapping an index item should jump to the correct page for that chart. I know there is a host of apps that combine comic book jpg's to ebooks, but is there anything that does the above please?

• Why do LCD screens need a backlight? (seriously)

  Bare with me on this, I'm well aware that most LCDs have backlights. But what if, they DIDN'T? I spend long hours in front of a screen and I hate the concept of staring into a lightbulb all the time and my eyes getting sore. I need to get a new lcd (some sort of IPS that doesn't cost a fortune) soon, but no matter what I'll get, I'll still be looking at a damn light. How come you can read on a kindle w/o a backlight but there aren't any monitors like that? I mean, ideally, a screen should be like a book or any other object in real life. • how to workaround glassfish 3.0.1 admin page slow startup?

  I've installed netbeans which comes with glassfish. i just got a book about glassfish and i wanted to try.the first surprise is the time it took to the admin page to load. i've found on serverfault and by googling that the server is making call to external resource on the network on online (not sure about that). but the adding of the java options didn't speed up the loading of the admin page. how to work around it? i've heard so good about glassfish that this leaves me perplexed. thanks for reading and for helping.

• 1 iPhone, 2 (potentially 3) Macs......& Google Apps Sync?!

  Currently I use a beast of a G5 Mac at work for all my software/web development, an iMac G5 at home for personal use & a MacBook Pro for when i'm on the go. At work we make heavy use of all the Google Apps features such as calendar & docs etc. We all have an address book (local mac application) that gets synced with a list of contacts stored on our mail server. I want to be able to integrate the Google Apps calendar with my iPhone calendar (or even just iCal - which i can then sync to the iPhone). Essentially I want all three Macs to have the Google calendar synced to their version of iCal including the iPhone. I've heard that Google Sync handles something along these lines but i'm unsure if it's going to fulfill my needs? I'm trying my best to avoid having to use MobileMe..... • latex page number position

  I am working on a long document in latex with documentclass book. I need the page number to always be in the upper right corner of each page, even if that page is the first page of a chapter (right now on 1st pages of chatpers, the page number is bottom-centered, on all other pages it's top-right). I control the position of the page number with fancyheader: \usepackage{fancyhdr} \pagestyle{fancy} \lhead{} \chead{} \rhead{\thepage} \lfoot{} \cfoot{} \rfoot{} \renewcommand{\headrulewidth}{0pt} Also, I don;t know if the problem is realted but my chapters do not start from the top of the page. There is a white area, then comes chapter X, then a newline with the chapter line. What I also want is the chapter to start from the top of the page. The main question here is how I can get the page number to always appear in the upper right corner, I mention the thing with the chapter title position only in case that might be related. Thanks.

• How can I install Gentoo on Virtual Box//(Ubuntu 12.04)

  I'm googling for a while about how can I install Gentoo on Virtual Box. The hand book provides less information about installing it on virtual box rather on a real partition. I thought there will be a GUI tool to install Gentoo. [Now I think there is not :(] Whenever I'm booting into gentoo Im going into a LiveDVD environment where fdisk returning "command not found !" (Not sure this is a bug or Im using a wronng command) Now Im not a very exprienced user but do like to learn and play with Gentoo. Any help link will be appriciated. Downloaded File: livedvd-x86-amd64-32ul-2012.iso (Do I need to use Gentoo 64 as OS version in Virtual Box ?)

  Hi, i´m a little bit confused by reading all this posts an tutorials about staring with Zend, because there a so many different ways to solve a problem. I did this in a Plugin Controller named ViewSetup. • Database design - table relationship question

  I am designing schema for a simple quiz application. It has 2 tables - "Question" and "Answer Choices". Question table has 'question ID', 'question text' and 'answer id' columns. "Answer Choices" table has 'question ID', 'answer ID' and 'answer text' columns. With this simple schema it is obvious that a question can have multiple answer choices & hence the need for the answer choices table. However, a question can have only one correct answer and hence the need for the 'answer ID' in the question table. However, this 'answer ID' column in the question table provides a illusion as though there can be multiple questions for a single answer which is not correct. The other alternative to eliminate this illusion is to have another table just for correct answer that will have just 2 columns namely the question ID and the answer ID with a 1-1 relationship between the two tables. However, I think this is redundant. Any recommendation on how best to design this thereby enforcing the rules that a question can have multiple answer choices but only one correct answer?   I have a quick question but I've been struggling to find the best solution: I have two java webapps and wordpress (php) that I need to serve through my Prod website: App #1 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/ (this would have other url too such as "www.example.com/book") App #2 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/manage Finally WordPress would be accessed at www.example.com/info How can I configure apache to serve all these three instances at the same time? So far I have and it's not quite working right. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! • Memory management (segmentation and paging) in 80286 and 80386: How does it work?

  I found lots of Web sites and books explaining how memory management worked on the 8086 and later x86 CPUs in Real Mode. I understand, I think, how two 16 bit values, segment address and offset are combined to get a linear 20 bit physical address (shift segment four bits to the left, add offset; segments are 64K and start every 16 bytes). But I couldn't find any good Web sites or books that explained how memory management works in Protected Mode, specifically the differences between 80286 and 80386. Can anyone point me to a good Web site or book (or explain it right here)? (For extra credit, i.e. an upvote, how does it work in Long Mode?)

• Burn iTunes playlist to Audio Image

  I have Snow Leopard on an early model MacBook Pro. The CD Drive has been giving me fits the last few months -- I stick a blank CD in it, and it claims it's bad and spits it out. I can go through a pile of brand-new CD's and it will choose 1 out of 7 that it wants to use, even though all the CD's come from the same package. The rejected CD's work fine on a Linux machine I have. I need to burn an audio CD from iTunes and my thought was: Burn playlist to audio CD Image file (Red Book image?) Copy ISO file to Linux Machine Use Linux machine to burn audio image to a CD But looking around, it doesn't seem that iTunes on OSX will support this. I was wondering if anyone else has accomplished this.

• How long does badblocks take on a 1TB drive?

  I'm running badblocks (or rather "e2fsck -c") on a 1TB drive and if the progress indicator is any indication (no pun intended), it's going to take almost forever to complete. Right now it says 0.01% done, 30:20 elapsed which would mean the thing would take 17 weeks or so to complete, which seems rather excessive in my book. Is that a normal amount of time for such a check to take or it simply that my suspicions are correct in that the drive is failing, thus causing the check to take only slightly shorter than eternity? I found this question here, but that pertains to the amount of passes done.
