  • Which SQL Server version to install on Windows Server 2008 R2

    We have a test server running Windows Server 2008 R2 that I want to put SQL Server 2008 onto. I have an MSDN subscription and thought I could install (x64 version) SQL2008 but the installation warned me this wasn't compatible with this version of windows (reporting that I am running Windows 7). When I log onto my MSDN to download an update the only SQL Server R2 options I have are for Express edition or Enterprise evaluation (I am logged in to subscriber downloads). Is there no standard R2 edition or am I missing something?

  • Windows 7 Forbid connecting to a specific wireless network

    Does anyone know how to tell windows 7 to bar a wireless network? It keeps logging into a random open one with no bandwidth my neighbors have instead of the good one we have here. I keep unchecking "automatically log in if available" and it keeps re-checking itself. I want it to NEVER log into this network no matter what without manual intervention. I do not want to disable auto connecting, just tell it "do not ever connect to this one without my express permission".

  • Accessing WebKit Devtools JavaScript library

    I noticed something in Chrome the other day- I had opened Developer Tools, and then hit view source and was initially surprised to notice that apparently the developer tools window is coded in HTML and JavaScript- you can see that by putting the following into the Chrome address bar: view-source:chrome://devtools/devtools.html Two things struck me- first, the codes copyright belongs to Apple (considering their backing of WebKit, thats not too surprising), and secondly, it appears that you cannot access the JavaScript, CSS or Image files directly through Chrome by clicking on links in the source code. So two questions: Where are the DevTools assets stored on my computer or how can I otherwise access them? Or even better, can someone identify the library that is used and let me know how its licensed? I'm always on the look out for a well implemented UI toolkit- and Devtools looks great.

  • The advantages and disadvantages of using ORM

    Good Morning, I would like to discuss today the advantages and disadvantages of using ORM (such as ADO.NET). Advantages: Speeds-up Development - eliminates the need for repetitive SQL code. Reduces Development Time. Reduces Development Costs. Overcomes vendor specific SQL differences - the ORM knows how to write vendor specific SQL so you don't have to. Disadvantages: Loss in developer productivity whilst they learn to program with ORM. Developers loose understanding of what the code is actually doing - the developer is more in control using SQL. ORM has a tendency to be slow. ORM fail to compete against SQL queries for complex queries. In summary, I believe that the disadvantages of using an ORM (mainly the reduced time taken to perform repetitive tasks) is far outweighed by the disadvantages of ORM e.g. its difficulty to get to grips with.     What is your opinion about open source software? It is helpful in many situation, for example a community can correct many bugs. But I also think that it can be dangerous for a software developer. If you develop an application and share its source code, a lot of applications can grow with a little effort, simply copying part of your code. For example, if you develop a library in WPF which can be used to create charts, and share your code, this can be dangerous for companies which main business is WPF component developing. And obviously it is dangerous for a software developer who works in that company. What do you think about this?

  • FireLog: proper installation...

    I have installed the firewiresdk26 on my dev mac... and in the Tools/ directory is FireLog. I have run the FireLog 2.0.0.pkg installer on my dev mac, but the payload it deploys is installed in my /System/Library tree, as opposed to my /Developer/SDKs tree. so when I try to include the header iokit/firewire/FireLog.h it does not get found. am I missing something? or doing something wrong? or is this an error in the installer (either FW26 or FireLog installers?) I realize that the FireLog installer is intended to be run on the machine to be debugged remotely and thus it makes sense that the framework is placed in the /System/Library path, however none of the installers gets it into my developer path... I guess I just have to move it over there by hand, but before I do that I wanted to see if I'm just overlooking something silly and need to read the docs with more concentration or something... anyone run into this before?   • learning the Lower levels of computing

    I am a software developer with four years experience in .Net development, I always like to keep up to date with the latest technologies (.net related normally) being released and love learning them. I didn't however go to university and learnt all I know through helpful colleagues, .Net courses, the internet and good old books. I feel that I am a good developer, but without learning the lower levels of a computer as you would in the first year of a computer related Uni course, I get lost when talking to people about a lot of more technical lower level computing. Is there a book(s) that anyone could recommend, that would cover the lower levels of what is going on when I click "Run" in Visual Studio? I feel out of my depth when my boss says to me "Thats running in the CPU cache" or "you're limited by disk reads there", and would like to feel more confident when talking about how the hardware talks to each other (CPU to RAM etc). Apologise if thats a vague question, or has been asked before (i did check and couldn't find anything on here that answers my question).

  • PHP page load seems to be requesting itself and misinterpreting the result

    I'm working on a messy PHP page by another developer and I was analyzing the resource view in the Webkit developer tools and noticed that the page (index.php) makes an HTTP requests for itself and then interprets the results as an image despite it being sent with the text/html header. Because of this it throws the warning: Resource interpreted as image but transferred with MIME type text/html. Looking at the time graph the call comes after the <head> because it has already requested images for the body. Sometimes there are even two 'bad' requests. Can anyone explain what might be happening and/or suggest how to fix this? Could these be related to PHP includes?

    I initiated myself into rails development yesterday. I installed ruby 1.9.1 , rubygems and rails. Running 'gem install mongrel' worked fine and ostensibly installed mongrel too.     So Rails and Merb are sort of merging in Rails 3.0? Thats how its been described to me anyway. This means that a lot of what made Rails, Rails will now be moved to plug-ins so that it can be more lightweight. HOwever, what are those plug-ins going to be and as a new Rails developer, what are THE must have - and also more mature - plug-ins that a Rails developer should install? Some good examples I can think of might be will_paginate, ruby_prof or sqlite3-ruby.

  • SQL Server: Can INFORMATION_SCHEMA Tell Me When a SQL Object Was Created?

    Given: I added a non-nullable foreign key to a table. I settled on a way to populate the foreign key with default values. I checked in both changes to a re-runnable DB creation script. Other developers ran this script, and now they have the foreign key populated with default values on their developer machines. A few days later however... I changed my mind. Now I'd like to populate the foreign key's default values differently. My Question: Can SQL Server or INFORMATION_SCHEMA tell me when SQL objects were created? Ideally, I'd like to drop and re-add the foreign key if it was created before a certain date/time. Any help or alternative strategies would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, I'd like to avoid going to each developer's cube, asking them to drop the foreign key manually.

I got some idea but I don't know how to do because I'm a Flex developer, not Java developer, so I think you can help me. In Google, there's a tutorial show about I need to extend ServiceAdapter class in Java-side, which extends Invoke method. Do I need to extend other class instead of this to do what I want?   • ubuntu 10.04 logs itself out overnight

    Every night when I leave work, I lock the screen via ubuntu's "power" button in the top right hand panel. When I come to work in the morning, I'm greeted with the log-in screen.   • Which mobile operating system should I code for?

    It seems as though mobile computing has fully arrived. I would like to rewrite two of our programs for mobile devices, but am a bit lost as to which platform to target. Complicating this decision: I would need to learn the relevant languages and IDEs - my coding to date has been almost all web based (PHP, JS, Actionscript, etc. Some ASPX). Most users seem to be religious about their mobile decision, so oral conversations leave me more confused then enlightened. I do not yet own a smartphone - will have to buy one once I know which platform to be aiming for. Both of my programs are more for business users, (one is only useful for C.P.A.s). I am a single developer, and cannot develop for more than one platform at a time. Getting it right is important. Based on what I've found on the web, I would've expected RIM to be a shoo-in, and the general order to be as follows: RIM Blackberry - More of them than any other brand. Despite naysayers, they've had double the sales (or perhaps 5X the sales) of any other smartphone, and have continued to grow. And, they have business users. Android - According to Schmidt, they have outsold everyone else except RIM (though I can't find where I read that now), and they are just getting started. According to Comscore, they are already at 8% of the market and expected to hit Shcmidt's claims within six months. Nokia - The largest worldwide. If they would just make up between Maemo or Symbian, I would be far less confused. iPhone - Much more competition by other apps, fewer sales to be had, and a overlord that can delay or cancel my app at any time. Is Cocoa hard to learn? Windows Mobile - Word is that version 7 will not be backwards compatible and losing market share. Palm WebOS - Perhaps this should go first, as it is the only one that offers tools to make my life easy as a web application developer. No competition in marketplace. But not very many users either. However, a search on StackOverflow shows a hugely disproportionate number of iPhone questions versus Blackberry. Likewise, there are clearly more apps on iPhone, so it must be getting developer love. What is the one platform I should develop for? Please back up your answer with the logic.

  • Windows: File copy/move with filename regular expressions?

    i basically want to run: C:\>xcopy [0-9]{13}\.(gif|jpg|png) s:\TargetFolder /s i know xcopy doesn't support regular-express filename searches. i can't find out how to find out if PowerShell has a Cmdlet to copy files; and if it does, how to find out if it supports regular expression filename matching. Can anyone think of a way to perform a recursive file copy/move with regex filename matching?

  • Integrating Fedex and UPS into Rails Apps

    I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: Fedex or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between Fedex and UPS? I was leaning towards Fedex, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. I gave away all my points, so SO wont' let me post another link in this question. But if you google "Spree active-shipping", their wrapper on github is the first result. Thanks.
