  • Pros and Cons of programming languages for XML & string manipulation

    I don't mean this to be opinionated. What are serious pros/cons of various server-side languages in regards to creating/modifying xml. I'm currently researching new platform/language direction and we deal with a lot of xml. We also do a lot of string manipulation, what advantages/disadvantages do different languages have in regards to string manipulation. I'm thinking along the lines of regular expression searching and replacing.

The Javadocs are all very well, but I'd really like to see some tutorials or just a project that uses the library so I can get more of a feel for it.     Need to filter a table from outside of the table, with a text search, checkboxes, and selects. PicNet Table Filter for jQuery works for both searching and using checkboxes outside of the table... though I can't find any examples of how to get a select box to work. Anyone know? *I might be getting too specific here, but thought I'd at least inquire. I'm also open to possibilities other than PicNet.

    It appears to me, from searching stackoverflow, that hand coding html/css is superior to using WYSIWYG editors. I'm a few weeks into learning html and css, and I've only hand-coded so far (though I do have the Adobe Suite). My questions: is it ever worth learning how to use a WYSIWYG editor (like dreamweaver)? And, more importantly, when would it be better to use it over handcoding?

  • Does calling a click method effect the HtmlPage object if there is a 404?

    If I call a click method on a HtmlAnchor, and say that page returns a 404, does that mean the HtmlPage will effect, so searching for another link on the page will result in an error because the page's HTML is the error page (assuming the link is NOT on the error page). Can I manually set the page's HTML, and then locate and click on links and continue on from this approach? (other than connecting via a URL)

  • How can I get Rails to interpret a text field as a datetime

    My database has a datetime field, and I want to be able to create new entries. Obviously the Rails datetime_select helper isn't the most user friendly thing to have in your form. I'd rather have a text field for the datetime (or one for the date, and one for the time) and interpret the inputs like PHP strtotime can. I might just be searching the wrong keywords. Surely this has been discussed in great depth somewhere. Thanks :0)
