• [perl] Efficient processing of large text

  I have text file that contains over one million urls. I have to process this file in order to assign urls to groups, based on host address: { 'http://www.ex1.com' = ['http://www.ex1.com/...', 'http://www.ex1.com/...', ...], 'http://www.ex2.com' = ['http://www.ex2.com/...', 'http://www.ex2.com/...', ...] } My current basic solution takes about 600mb of RAM to do this (size of file is about 300mb). Could You provide some more efficient ways? My current solution simply reads line by line, extracts host address by regex and put url into hash.

  I am trying to test my views with RSpec. The particular view that is causing me troubles changes its appearance depending on a url parameter: link_to "sort>name", model_path(:sort_by => 'name') which results in http://mydomain/model?sort_by=name My view then uses this parameter like that: <% if params[:sort_by] == 'name' %> <div>Sorted by Name</div> <% end %> The RSpec looks like this: it "should tell the user the attribute for sorting order" do #Problem: assign params[:sort_for] = 'name' render "/groups/index.html.erb" response.should have_tag("div", "Sorted by Name") end I would like to test my view (without controller) in RSpec but I can't get this parameter into my params variable. I tried assign in all different flavours: assign[:params] = {:sort_by => 'name'} assign[:params][:sort_by] = 'name' ... no success so far. Every idea is appreciated.

• What is the accepted way to replace java.util.Date(year,month,day)

  I'm trying to do something really simple, but starting to realize that dates in Java are a bit of minefield. All I want is to get passed groups of three ints ( a year, a month and a date) create some Date objects, do some simple test on them (along the lines of as date A before date B and after January 1 1990), convert them to java.sql.Date objects and pass them off to the database via JDBC. All very simple and works fine using the java.util.Date(int year,int month,int day) constructor. Of course that constructor is depreciated, and I'd like to avoid using depreciated calls in new code I'm writing. However all the other options to solve this simple problem seem stupidly complicated. Is there really no simple way to do what I want without using depreciated constructors? I know the standard answer to all Java date related questions is "use joda time", but I really don't want to start pulling in third party libraries for such a seemingly trivial problem.

  Hi there, my situation is the following: I have a project with JSP, Struts and a lot of actions. Lets say that I have these 3 main groups {contacts.do, calendar.do and notes.do} with lot of actions in each of them. I have an action unrelated to all of them but since I didn't know where to put it I just chose contacts. My aim is after the action, to go back to the page I was but since the action is place in contacts it returns to the default action of contacts. Is there anything I could do for this purpose?   First off, please bear with me if I don't state the SQL question correctly. I have a table that has multiple columns of data. The selection criteria for my table groups based on column 1(order #). There could be multiple items on each order, but the item #'s are not grouped together. Example: Order Customer Order Date Order Time Item Quantity 123456 45 01/02/2010 08:00 140 4 123456 45 01/02/2010 08:30 270 29 123456 45 03/03/2010 09:00 140 6 123456 45 04/02/2010 09:30 140 10 123456 45 04/02/2010 10:00 270 35 What I need is a result like: Order Customer Order Date Order Time Item Quantity 123456 45 04/02/2010 09:30 140 10 123456 45 04/02/2010 10:00 270 35 This result shows that after all the changes the final order includes 10 of Item 140 and 35 of Item 270. I am looking for a good ldap library on Django, that would allow me to manage my ldap server : adding, modifying, deleting entries for groups, users, and all kind of objects The library django-ldapdb looked promising, it offers a Model base class that can be used to declare ldap objects in a Django fashion (which is what we ideally want), however we've had some bugs with it, and furthermore it seems like it is not maintained any more. Does somebody know a good library that could do the trick ? Otherwise I guess I'll just try to improve and debug django-ldapdb ... Thanks !

  Hi all, i am wondering how can i select specific number of child objects instead of taking them all with include? lets say i have object 'Group' and i need to select last ten students that joined the group. When i use '.Include("Students"), EF includes all students. I was trying to use Take(10), but i am pretty new to EF and programming as well, so i couldn't figure it out. Any suggestions? UPDATED: ok, i have Group object already retrieved from db like this: Group group = db.Groups.FirstOrDefault(x=>x.GroupId == id) I know that i can add Include("Students") statement, but that would bring ALL students, and their number could be quite big whether i need only freshest 10 students. Can i do something like this: var groupWithStudents = group.Students.OrderByDescending(//...).Take(10);? The problem with this is that Take< no longer appears in intellisense. Is this clear enough? • Which OS should I boot into for virtualization?

  This might be a silly question. I use windows 7 99% of the time. I run linux 10% of the time and XP 5% of the time. I am thinking about getting a Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Processor which has hardware support for virtualization. I dont think i want more than one partition. May have a swap partition. Which OS should I make my primary (and only) partition? I suspect windows7 if i am always using it as going through a linux layer would slow it down. Does it matter much which OS i use if i have hardware support for virtualization? At the moment I am using VMWare player. I suspect software doesnt effect performance?

• Setting nagios location in map

  I have Nagios installed and I'm working on getting the network map correct. The problem I have is that "Nagios" appears to be in the "internet" when it should be located on the MechNAS server. What I want is Nagios Process to show up inside the local network. So it should show up at the same layer as MechNAS and development. Where exactly is that configured? I didnt see any place to set that up and it looks now like it's out there on it's own. Documentation and Googling didnt seem to turn up anything either.

  Just trying to figure out the best way to design my table for the following scenario: I have several areas in my system (documents, projects, groups and clients) and each of these can have comments logged against them. My question is should I have one table like this: CommentID DocumentID ProjectID GroupID ClientID etc Where only one of the ids will have data and the rest will be NULL or should I have a seperate CommentType table and have my comments table like this: CommentID CommentTypeID ResourceID (this being the id of the project/doc/client) etc My thoughts are that option 2 would be more efficient from an indexing point of view?

What is a good and idiomatic way to do this in Scala? I know that I can pattern match on Regexes, but this is syntactically not very pleasing in this case, because I have no groups to extract: scala> "5" match { case Digit() => true case _ => false } res4: Boolean = true Or I could fall back to the underlying Java pattern: scala> Digit.pattern.matcher("5").matches res6: Boolean = true which is not elegant, either. Is there a better solution?

These strings are in cluded in ext-lang-pt_PT.js. what is the difference between ext-lang-pt.js and ext-lang-pt_PT.js. Do I have to include the file ext-lang-pt_PT.js in order to translate the strings in portugese? Please let me know

  I'm writing a report generator that will present data each being generated from 4 parameters. Time interval Group Measurement value(one of several to choose from) Device All these are orthogonal giving me a 4-D dataset to present. There are some simplifications where one parameter is the same for all and other parameters are merged. Still it appears as there are situations where all values are wanted on the report. In short the report should both be simple to overview and contain details. There will also be an interface where the user setup the range and granularity for each parameter. The most naive solution would be to have a 2D table where each cell contain another table with values of the remaining two dimensions. This is technically feasible but I'm worried that it would become hard to overview. Another approach is to present first two dimensions in a 2D table and the remaining parameters in groups Are there any good method to address this kind of issue?

  We have an ASP.NET MVC application + IIS 7.5 + SQL Server 2008 R2. We have to load a lot of aggregate counters on the each page. We decided to use ajax and call with javascript for each counter or groups of counters and return them as JSON result. We solve the problem that user doesn't wait for page loading, page loads fast. User waits for counters loading while seeing other page content. But we thought that if we make calls from javascript - our queries will be make async, but we notice, that it is not. All our javascipt calls runs immediately, but action that they invoke are in queue. If we use Async Controller ability - all counters calculating simultaneously, but user has to wait for the longest counter calculating before page loads. The question: We want to understand what is happens if we use ajax and call two or more actions simultaneously. And how can we configuring this. (also in each action we make some queries to sql server)

• Problem with Xcode and iPhone preference files

  Hi, I created four language files for my app: two for the preferences and two for the strings. I added them into Xcode and it works great on the phone but the string files are shown as "Localizable.strings (de)" and "Localizable.strings (en)", while I have two files called "Root.plist" under the "Settings.bundle" in the groups "de.lproj" and "en.lproj" (see screenshot).When I don't add the two "Root.plist" files instead of "Settings.bundle", I get what I want ("Root.plist (de)" and "Root.plist (en)") but I have no "Settings.bundle" in Xcode. Is somebody out there who can help me to a get what I want?

  for a project i'm making, i'm using Objectify and Google AppEngine I'm quoting and old message from Google Groups, but the problem i have is the same: Here's the problem I'm trying to solve: I'd like to persist instances of several subclasses of one superclass to the datastore, and then retrieve them by querying for that superclass. (For example, a query for Game would return instances of Chess and Backgammon). Is there any way to accomplish this using Objectify? Because the thing i want is the same, but the topic does not provides yet an answer (it's 3 years old), I moved here with the same question. From 2010 to now, this question has been solved? • What things can I teach a group of children about programming in one day?

  I'm running a day for 30 kids aged 11-18 about computer game programming. They have all opted to do it, but they have no experience at all of programming. My main aim is for them to learn a few things: programming is hard/challenging programming is something they can learn to do being a computer games programmer != playing games all day a little more insight into how games actually work I'd thought of splitting them into two groups, of younger/less experience and older/more experience, then doing slightly different things. I'd considered showing them Scratch, Game Maker, before showing them the basics of Python and getting them to write a simple text based game (perhaps something like, computer picks a random number, you have to guess it in as few guesses as possible, computer says higher/lower for each guess). Does anyone have any ideas of things to do/show them/ways to teach them?

• New records added to DataGridView aren't displayed

  I have a custom Order class, groups of which are stored in List<Order> and a DataGridView. I think the problem is in my implementation so here's how I'm using it: In the form enclosing DataGridView (as OrdersDataGrid): public partial class MainForm : Form { public static List<Order> Orders; public MainForm() { // code to populate Orders with values, otherwise sets Orders to new List<Order>(); OrdersDataGrid.DataSource = Orders; } Then in another form that adds an Order: // Save event public void Save(object sender, EventArgs e) { Order order = BuildOrder(); // method that constructs an order object from form data MainForm.Orders.Add(order); } From what I can tell from the console this is added successfully. I thought the DataGrid would be updated automatically after this since Orders has changed - is there something I'm missing? The DataGrid accepts the class since it generates columns from the members.
