• Extract dates from filename

  I have a situation where I need to extract dates from the file names whose general pattern is [filename_]YYYYMMDD[.fileExtension] e.g. "xxx_20100326.xls" or x2v_20100326.csv The below program does the work //Number of charecter in the substring is set to 8 //since the length of YYYYMMDD is 8 public static string ExtractDatesFromFileNames(string fileName) { return fileName.Substring(fileName.IndexOf("_") + 1, 8); } Is there any better option of achieving the same? I am basically looking for standard practice. I am using C#3.0 and dotnet framework 3.5 Edit: I have like the solution and the way of answerig of LC. I have used his program like string regExPattern = "^(?:.*_)?([0-9]{4})([0-9]{2})([0-9]{2})(?:\\..*)?$"; string result = Regex.Match(fileName, @regExPattern).Groups[1].Value; The input to the function is : "x2v_20100326.csv" But the output is: 2010 instead of 20100326(which is the expected one). • How to adjust a single side of rectangular selection made with Marquee Tool?

  I am struggling to make a selection made of different layers. For example, a button with text and shadow (each in its own layer). I would like to copy it to a image file but it is really hard to select the shadow with a pixel precision. I do not know how to perform such task properly so I use Marquee Tool. However, it is hard to get all 4 sides right from the first attempt. What's worse, I could not find a method to adjust a single side of a selection made by Marquee Tool. Anyone may help what I am doing wrong?

• How to avoid web server traffic peak resulting from iOS Newsstand app receiving a remote notification?

  I'm developing an iOS Newsstand app. If it is suspended or not running and connected to a WLAN, Newsstand apps can be triggered by a Push remote notification to download the latest issue (in our case around 100MB) in the background. I'm using Urban Airship for the delivery of the Push broadcast. I'm now worrying about many many iOS devices hitting the web server for one big download more or less at the same time, because I expect the majority of the devices will receive the notification in a very short timeframe. Instead of broadcasts to all devices, should I rather send individual notifications to batches of small groups of devices, spreading them out over a longer period of time? And/or would a CDN like Amazon Cloudfront solve that issue easier/anyway?

  Lets say we have 3 tables (actually I have 2 at the moment, but this example might illustrate the thought better): [Person] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Group] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [Role] ID: int, primary key Name: nvarchar(xx) [PersonGroupRole] Person_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Group_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Role_ID: int, PRIMARY COMPOSITE OR NOT? Should any of the 3 ID's in the relation PersonGroupRole be marked as PRIMARY key or should they all 3 be combined into one composite?? whats the real benefit of doing it or not? I can join anyways as far as I know, so Person JOIN PersonGroupRole JOIN Group gives me which persons are in which Groups etc. I will be using LINQ/C#/.NET on top of SQL-express and SQL-server, so if there is any reasons regarding language/SQL that might make the choice more clear, thats the platform I ask about. Looking forward to see what answers pops up, as I have thought of these primary keys/indexes many times when making combined ones.

• How to deploy and secure an ASP.NET web app to be available to internal and outside users?

  My company has several web applications written in ASP.NET. We need to make these applications available to Intranet users as well as authenticated external users. Most of the features are the same for the two groups, though there are some extra features available to the Internal users. The two different sets of users would use a slightly different security setup... our internal people will be authenticated using LDAP against Exchange, whereas the external users will have accounts in SQL Server. What is the best approach for deploying our web apps? Should we deploy 2 copies to different servers, one configured for an Intranet and one for outside users? Or is there a better way to share the code between the 2 servers, yet have the flexibility to use different web.config settings for security??

• How to access radioButton individual items?

  Hello, I've got 2 radio button groups showed differently depending on the value selected on another radio button. The thing is that I would like to set the default value of the group to the first element in the radiobutton group, but when I change from the other radio button it preserves the value previously selected, when I want it to be reset to the default value. I've been searching in the javascript repository but apparently I cannot access like it says with radio[1].checked = true... It says that radio[1] is undefined, but radio is an HTML Input element object. I'm accessing it from a different file, but var radio = document.getElementById("radio") works, but I can't access the individual radiobuttons. Thank you in advance

• Get the checked value of 2 sets of radiobuttons using jQuery

  Im having a weird issue here. Its probably just something stupid but I dont see it. I have two sets of radiobuttons, group1 and group2, and I want to get their values in a function. I have 1 clickevent on all radiobuttons in that div and when I click them I want to display the check-values of both groups. But he only reads the value of the first group. and so it always displays 1-1 2-2 3-3 4-4 instead of possibly 1-2 3-1 etc.... There is a jsfiddle here what am I missing??

  I am planning to familiarize(read teach) myself with Silverlight by building an in-house app for managing our employees. I, obviously, would need this to interact with Active Directory on some level. What are my options? Has anyone tried this before? I am currently going to explore using Services(WCF???) to do the AD interaction portion? Thoughts? There is also this SO Post on using PowerShell to interact with AD. Maybe that is a possibility? Thanks, EDIT: Too clarify what I meant by "...interact with Active Directory..." I was referring to being able to create New Users, reset they're passwords, change they're Member Of groups, etc. Not JUST authenticating through AD. Does this make it clearer?

  I have to develop a basic social network for an academic purpose; but I need some tips for the users management.. The users are subdivided into 3 groups with different privilege: admins,analysts and standards users. For every user should be stored into the database the following information: name,lastname,e-mail,age,password. I'm not quite sure how I should design the database between theese two solutions: 1)one table called 'users' with the 'role' attribute that explain what a user can do and what can't do, and the permissions are managed via php 2)every application user is a database user created with the query 'CREATE ROLE' (It's a postgres database) and he has permissions on some tables granted with the 'GRANT' statement You should take into account that the project is for a database exam.. thanks

• Host data transfer limit calculations and network protocol headers

  OK, this might be a really stupid question, but... I'm building a web app that utilises websockets. There's fairly rapid messaging going on, so I've been taking a look at the network traffic with wireshark, to see if there's any way of reducing the amount of data we are sending over the wire, and hence costs. A typical message has approx 150 byte data payload, and according to wireshark the lower layer stuff takes up about: Ethernet: 14 bytes IP: 20 Bytes TCP: 20 Bytes My question is, are these network headers included in data transfer calculations? What about TCP ACK messages? (another 54 bytes according to wireshark) This may seem petty, but because we have so much messaging going on, and because the payload is a similar size to these headers, it's significant.

I tried writing a menu xml with linear layouts to arrange the items, but this doesnt work. I have also tried putting them in different groups, but I had no luck with that either. I know that this is possible: i have seen it done. Anyone have any ideas?

• An international mobile app - Should I set up EC2 instances in multiple regions?

  I am currently trying to launch an mobile app for users around the world. It is not a spectacular launch which will get millions of users in weeks - just another individual developer releasing an app. I know enough about the techniques of managing timezones, internationalizing string, and what not ( the application layer ). But I cannot find any information on how I should manage my EC2 instances... Should I be setting up EC2 instances in different regions around the world? Is that a must-do, or is it an overkill? I'm aware that it's the ideal solution in terms of performance, but it becomes very tough managing servers in multiple regions. DB issues, AMI management, etc... I'd much rather NOT do so. So I would like to know the general best practice when launching an international app/website. Note: For static contents, I know it's better to use a CDN, so I'm planning on doing so.

• Japanese character stored in SQL Server DB using ASP page that assumed it as ISO-8859-1 encoding

  We have a legacy ASP based product that allowed the UI and Data languages of user groups to be configured according to their locations. CodePage and CharSet in ASP pages collecting data was set accordingly. I've noticed few instances in the SQL Server DB where users posted Japanese characters in the ASP page that assumes the oncoming stream to be of ISO-8859-1/Western and as a result, the data in the SQL table has gobbled up. While upgrading the client to our new product, I want to back-convert those "garbage" Japanese (in some instances Chinese) characters back to their actual form. Can I create some utility ASP page that would go through such data values and "fix" the wrongly-encoded strings and store everything back as utf-8 strings? In any case, I don't want to affect my French/Spanish/English characters that might be there as well.

• creating existing users on AWS when they don't have a group

  It seems when chef creates a user with the id of "foobar" it also creates a group with the id of "foobar". AWS doesn't do that. So, when I run my create users script via Opsworks it blows up on the first user that already exists because the group doesn't. I thought there was a way to say create the user but not the group, but I can't find it. What's the best way to solve this problem? Can I: Tell chef to not create the user's group? Tell chef to create it if the user exists but the group doesn't? Write a script that finds the existing users and creates groups for them? Something else?

I have to process this file in order to assign urls to groups, based on host address: { 'http://www.ex1.com' = ['http://www.ex1.com/...', 'http://www.ex1.com/...', ...], 'http://www.ex2.com' = ['http://www.ex2.com/...', 'http://www.ex2.com/...', ...] } My current basic solution takes about 600mb of RAM to do this (size of file is about 300mb). Could You provide some more efficient ways? My current solution simply reads line by line, extracts host address by regex and put url into hash.

• How to read changed values with native query during one transaction? (Spring and JPA)

  We have container transaction with Spring and JPA (Hibernate). I need to make an update on a table to "flag" some rows via native statements. Then we insert some rows via EntityManager from JPATemplate to this table. After that, we need to calculate changes in the table via native statement (with Oracle's union and minus, complex groups...) I see that changes from step 1 and 2 are not commited and thats why the statement from 3 fails. I already tried with transaction propagation REQUIRES_NEW, EntityManager.flush... Didn't work. 1) update SOMETABLE acolumn = somevalue (native) 2) persist some values into SOMETABLE (via entity manager) 3) select values from SOMETABLE Is there a possibility to read the changes from step 1 and 2 in step 3?

• Django model class and custom property

  Howdy - today a weird problem occured to me: I have a modle class in Django and added a custom property to it that shall not be saved into the database and therefore is not represent in the models structure: class Category(models.Model): groups = models.ManyToManyField(Group) title = defaultdict() Now, when I'm within the shell or writing a test and I do the following: c1 = Category.objects.create() c1.title['de'] = 'german title' print c1.title['de'] # prints "german title" c2 = Category.objects.create() print c2.title['de'] # prints "german title" <-- WTF? It seems that 'title' is kind of global. If I change title to a simple string it works as expected, so it has to do something with the dict?   I never clearly understood what is an ABI. I'm sorry for such a lengthy question. I just want to clearly understand things. Please don't point me to wiki article, If could understand it, I wouldn't be here posting such a lengthy post. This is my mindset about different interfaces: TV remote is an interface between user and TV. It is an existing entity but useless (doesn't provide any functionality) by itself. All the functionality for each of those buttons on the remote is implemented in the Television set. Interface: It is a "existing entity" layer between the functionality and consumer of that functionality. An, interface by itself is doesn't do anything. It just invokes the functionality lying behind. Now depending on who the user is there are different type of interfaces. Command Line Interface(CLI) commands are the existing entities, consumer is the user and functionality lies behind. functionality: my software functionality which solves some purpose to which we are describing this interface. existing entities: commands consumer: user Graphical User Interface(GUI) window,buttons etc.. are the existing entities, again consumer is the user and functionality lies behind. functionality: my software functionality which solves some purpose to which we are describing this interface. existing entities: window,buttons etc.. consumer: user Application Programming Interface(API) functions or to be more correct, interfaces (in interfaced based programming) are the existing entities, consumer here is another program not a user. and again functionality lies behind this layer. functionality: my software functionality which solves some purpose to which we are describing this interface. existing entities: functions, Interfaces(array of functions). consumer: another program/application. Who needs these details? Please don't say, OS. I know assembly programming. I know how linking & loading works. I know what exactly happens inside. Where did C++ name mangling come in between? I thought we are talking at the binary level. Where did languages come in between? anyway, I've downloaded the [PDF] System V Application Binary Interface Edition 4.1 (1997-03-18) to see what exactly it contains. Well, most of it didn't make any sense. Why does it contain 2 chapters (4th & 5th) which describe the ELF file format.Infact, these are the only 2 significant chapters that specification. Rest of all the chapters "Processor Specific". Anyway, I thought that it is completely different topic. Please don't say that ELF file format specs are the ABI. It doesn't qualify to be Interface according to the definition. I know, since we are talking at such low level it must be very specific. But I'm not sure how is it "Instruction Set Architecture(ISA)" specific? Where can I find MS Window's ABI? So, these are the major queries that are bugging me.

• What is the accepted way to replace java.util.Date(year,month,day)

  I'm trying to do something really simple, but starting to realize that dates in Java are a bit of minefield. All I want is to get passed groups of three ints ( a year, a month and a date) create some Date objects, do some simple test on them (along the lines of as date A before date B and after January 1 1990), convert them to java.sql.Date objects and pass them off to the database via JDBC. All very simple and works fine using the java.util.Date(int year,int month,int day) constructor. Of course that constructor is depreciated, and I'd like to avoid using depreciated calls in new code I'm writing. However all the other options to solve this simple problem seem stupidly complicated. Is there really no simple way to do what I want without using depreciated constructors? I know the standard answer to all Java date related questions is "use joda time", but I really don't want to start pulling in third party libraries for such a seemingly trivial problem.

The particular view that is causing me troubles changes its appearance depending on a url parameter: link_to "sort>name", model_path(:sort_by => 'name') which results in http://mydomain/model?sort_by=name My view then uses this parameter like that: <% if params[:sort_by] == 'name' %> <div>Sorted by Name</div> <% end %> The RSpec looks like this: it "should tell the user the attribute for sorting order" do #Problem: assign params[:sort_for] = 'name' render "/groups/index.html.erb" response.should have_tag("div", "Sorted by Name") end I would like to test my view (without controller) in RSpec but I can't get this parameter into my params variable. I tried assign in all different flavours: assign[:params] = {:sort_by => 'name'} assign[:params][:sort_by] = 'name' ... no success so far. Every idea is appreciated.

I am able to use the Category.entry_set but I want to be able to do Category.blogentry_set but it is not available. If this is not available,then I need another method to get all ExtEntryrelated to one particular Category Thanks

• Teaming/Spanning Switch Ports

  I like to team NICs on my servers. Since most workstations are giga-bit anymore I want to provide my servers a bit more bandwidth. I've read various things that say I am/am not supposed to bond the ports on the switch. I see benefit in doing it as I'm not sure how the switch ARP table handles the same MAC address on multiple ports. Suggestions on the "ideal" way to do it? If it matters, I have mix (various locations) of Dell and HP, web managed, Layer 2 switches. Servers are mostly Dell with Broadcom NICs.
