• .NET 3.5 SP1 Code from Network - "The system cannot find the file specified."

  This issue has nothing to do with whether the assemblies have been signed or caspol has been run for the shared network folder. Apparently, the location of the files is the issue, but I cannot find what the real problem is. I have one executable that references 5 dll's. I can run the app from a local drive without any problem. When I run the app from a network share, I get an error stating that "Could not load file or assembly 'homer, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." If all the files are in the same folder, what is the error really telling me? I should note also that the framework used is 3.5 SP1, which does not require changing code access policy. I had tried that anyhow, and I received the same error in both cases. Thanks, DaMoose

  Ho do I prevent a duplicate row from being created in a table with two columns, neither of which are unique? And can this be done using MySQL only, or does it require checks with my PHP script? Here is the CREATE query for the table in question (two other tables exist, users and roles): CREATE TABLE users_roles ( user_id INT(100) NOT NULL, role_id INT(100) NOT NULL, FOREIGN KEY (user_id) REFERENCES users(user_id), FOREIGN KEY (role_id) REFERENCES roles(role_id) ) ENGINE = INNODB; I would like the following query, if executed more than once, to throw an error: INSERT INTO users_roles (user_id, role_id) VALUES (1, 2); Please do not recommend bitmasks as an answer.   Scala does not permit to create laze vars, only lazy vals. It make sense. But I've bumped on use case, where I'd like to have similar capability. I need a lazy variable holder. It may be assigned a value that should be calculated by time-consuming algorithm. But it may be later reassigned to another value and I'd like not to call first value calculation at all. Example assuming there is some magic var definition lazy var value : Int = _ val calc1 : () => Int = ... // some calculation val calc2 : () => Int = ... // other calculation value = calc1 value = calc2 val result : Int = value + 1 This piece of code should only call calc2(), not calc1 I have an idea how I can write this container with implicit conversions and and special container class.   Hi: I have a application which require login,but the number of user who use the application is no more than 40. And In the application,I get some data from the sql server database where I juse have read permission,also I can not create a table in the db for user validate. ALso I do not think it is a good idea to create a user table in other database on another machine.(for example,I can create a user table in the mysql another machine,but is it desireable just for user validating)? Now I just save the user info in a .properties file,any other good idea? BTW,the programe language used in my application is java.

  I am developing an Android application and require some basic datetime manipulation. I have a Date object (from Java.util.Date) holding a specific date. I need to add a specific time to it. The time I have is a string in this format: "9:00 PM EST" How would I "add" this time to the previous date? If the Date object currently has: "4/24/10 00:00:00" How would I change it to instead be: "4/24/10 09:00:00 EST" I would prefer to do this without the use of an external library, if possible.

• How can I set the Rails environment for my somewhat stand alone Ruby script?

  I have a Ruby script in my Rails app that I use to load some data from Twitter. In the future I will make it an automatic background process, but for now I run it manually like: ruby /lib/twitter/twitterLoad.rb In order to use the Rails model classes and such, I have the following as the top line of the script: require "#{File.dirname(__FILE__)}/../../config/environment.rb" By default, the development environment is used. But, I'd like to be able to choose the production environment at some point. Update #1: The RAILS_ENV constant is getting set in the environment.rb file. So, I was able to put ENV['RAILS_ENV'] = 'production' at the very top (before the environment.rb) line and solve my problem somewhat. So, my new question is, can do pass in env vars through the command line?

• Best approach to creating a database driven Java website?

  I'm fairly new to programming and new to java, but I'd like to jump in the deep end with a little database driven website project. I've read quite a lot about requirements in the 'real world' requesting experience with Spring and Hibernate, so I have those installed on netbeans and a project created (if I hit run I get the default spring page). Now I just need a little guidance as to where to start designing my app (please tell me if I'm getting in a bit too over my head for a beginner!). Should I start off with my classes? - create all my classes as they map to my database tables and decide which attributes and methods each will require? Can anyone suggest any good books for maybe.. making a java based website from scratch (i.e. from design right through to deployment) that might be useful for a beginner? Any help appreciated thanks.

• How does Rails Plugin Storage work?

  Trying to figure out how to install rails plugins manually on windows so I have a few questions. What does the directory need to be named in vendor/plugins? Is it arbitrary or is it linked to something within the plugin config files or is that what you set in the environment.rb? Once I've copied the files to the correct directory, do I always need to run something inside like init.rb or is it good to go? What's the difference between 'require' and 'include'? Thanks!

• Creating a User Registration Page using MongoEngine

  I am currently working an a webapp, using mongoengine and django, which will require users to create an account from a registration page. I know MongoEngine has an authentication backend, but does it also include a registration form, etc..., like django itself does? If not, are there any example projects which show how to implement this? The only open-source mongoengine project I've found is django-mumblr, but I can't find the examples I want in it. I'm not interested in alternative options, such as MongoKit or mango for handling authentication. I am just getting started with django and mongoDB, so please excuse my lack of knowledge. • Are there any medium-sized web applications built with CGI::Application that are open-sourced?

  I learn best by taking apart something that already does something and figuring out why decisions were made in which manner. Recently I've started working with Perl's CGI::Application framework, but found i don't really get along well with the documentation (too little information on how to best structure an application with it). There are some examples of small applications on the cgi-app website, but they're mostly structured such that they demonstrate a small feature, but contain mostly of code that one would never actually use in production. Other examples are massively huge and would require way too much time to dig through. And most of them are just stuff that runs on cgiapp, but isn't open source. As such I am looking for something that has most base functionality like user logins, db access, some processing, etc.; is actually used for something but not so big that it would take hours to even set them up. Does something like that exist or am i out of luck?

  I have a table of phone numbers, storing the phone number as varchar(20). I have a requirement to implement searching of both entire numbers, but also on only the last part of the number, so a typical query will be: SELECT * FROM PhoneNumbers WHERE Number LIKE '%1234' How can I put an index on the Number column to make those searchs efficient? Is there a way to create an index that sorts the records on the reversed string? Another option might be to reverse the numbers before storing them, which will give queries like: SELECT * FROM PhoneNumbers WHERE ReverseNumber LIKE '4321%' However that will require all users of the database to always reverse the string. It might be solved by storing both the normal and reversed number and having the reversed number being updated by a trigger on insert/update. But that kind of solution is not very elegant. Any other suggestions?

• Creating quick GUI front ends

  Hi, I wanted to have a GUI front-end for a script that accepts numerous command-line options, most of them are UNIX paths. So I thought rather than typing them in (even with auto-completion) every time, I'd create a GUI front end which contains text boxes with buttons beside them, which when clicked will invoke the file browser dialogue. Later, I thought I'd extend this to other scripts which would sure require a different set of GUI elements. This made me think if there's any existing app that would let me create a GUI dialog, after parsing some kind of description of the items that I want that window should contain. I know of programs like Zenity, but I think it's doesn't give me what I want. For example, if I were to use it for the first script, it'll end up flashing sequence of windows in succession rather than getting everything done from a single window. So, basically I'm looking at some program that lets me create a window from a text description, probably XML or the like. Please suggest. Thanks Jeenu

• Can I have fixed typed ArrayList in C#, just like C++?

  I have an ArrayList which contains fixed type of objects. However everytime I need to extract an object a particular index, I need to typecast it to my user defined type from object type. Is there a way in C# to declare ArrayList of fixed types just like Java and C++, or is there a work around to avoid the typecasting everytime? Edit: I apologize I forgot mentioning that I require the datastructure to be thread-safe, which List is not. Otherwise I would have just used a normal Array. But I want to save myself from the effort of explicitly locking and unlocking while writing the array. So I thought of using ArrayList, synchronize it, but it requires typecasting every time.

I would like to allow the user to change the font size based on preference (ie did they remember their glasses today). A few ways that I can think of would be a numeric-up-down or +/- button controls. Both of these ways require screen real estate that is very limited.   Hello, I have my J2EE application deployed into a JBossAS. My Application has to respond to two different hostnames (https://foo.com/myApp and https://bar.com/myApp). It is the same instance of the app serving those two hostnames. But I don't know how to configure the keystores. I need different keystores for each hostname. Is there a way to tie a virtual host in JBoss' server.xml to a specific connector? Or do I have to use two different IP-addresses and create a connector for each? A solution that does not require a second IP-address would be greatly appreciated.

• JS Framework that doesn't use CSS selectors?

  A thing that I noticed about most JavaScript frameworks is that the most common way to find/access the DOM elements is to use CSS selectors. However this usually requires the framework to include a CSS selector parser, because they need to support selectors, that the browser natively doesn't, foremost the frameworks own proprietary extensions. I would think that these parsers are large and slow. Wouldn't it be more efficient to have something that doesn't require a parser, such a chained method calls? Some like: id("example").children().class("test").hasAttribute("href") instead of $("#example > .test[href]") Are there any frameworks around that do something like this? And how do they compare with jQuery and friends in regard to performance and size? EDIT: You can consider this a theoretical discussion topic. I don't plan to use anything other than jQuery in any practical projects in near furure. I was just wondering why there aren't any other, possibly better approaches.

  Are there any good resources for learning C++ that a C# user could use, which don't require knowledge of C? I have quite a good knowledge of C# via courses in my University's game development program (in a 300 level course right now) but now I need to use C++ for a project. I would use a beginner tutorial but they are so hard for me to follow and learn the basic syntax because they start so slowly. I found a few of tutorials for switching from C++ to C#, but none in the other direction. I do have a little bit of Objective C practice from iPhone programming as well.

• Is there a "dual user check-in" source control system?

  Are there any source control systems that require another user to validate the source code "before" it can be checked-in? I want to know as this is one technique to make sure that code quality is high. Update: There has been talk of "Branches" in the answers, and while I feel branches have there place I think that branchs are something different as when a developer's code is ready to go into the main branch it "should" be checked. Most often though I see that when this happens a lead developer or whoever is responsible for the merge into the main branch/stream just puts the code into the main branch as long as it "compiles" and does no more checks than that. I want the idea of two people putting their names to the code at an early stage so that it introduces some responsibility, and also because the code is cheaper to fix early on and is also fresh in the developers mind.

• Asp.net MVC database connection setting in Visual studio 2008

  I am trying to learn Asp.net MVC framework. I was looking at the video tutorial at the link below http://www.asp.net/learn/mvc-videos/video-395.aspx In this video the very first step is to add a new database to the example application. I have visual studio installed on my development machine but the SqlServer Express is running on a different machine, so when I try and add a new database following the same steps as the video I get the following error "Connections to SQL Server files(*.mdf) require SQL express 2005 to funciton properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the url" I am assuming this is because Visual studio is looking for an instance of SQL express on my local machine and since it doesnt exist on the local machine,it errors out. So how do i tell visual studio, to connect to a different machine and create the database there? I am using Visual studio 2008 with .net 3.5 Sp1

• how to find out how much application memory django process is (or will be) taking?

  There are different "Application memory" options (like 80MB...200MB) in django-friendly hosting called webfaction and I'm confused deciding which one I should buy. Could someone please walk me through the ideas on how to figure out how much memory my project might require (excluding operating system, the main apache server and the database servers memory requirements)? I understand in theory I'll need to perform some kind of load testing, but thought there might be ways to calculate that in advance with some simple/relatively easy understandable approach. I don't know how hard they enforce application memory usage limit, and another question is: what will happen if more users came to the site and more threads started than what I expected? Will the application crash? Or will delays just become uncomfortable? And - no, application is not ready yet (I can't measure anything right now). Development environment if it matters is Winodows 7, 64-bit. Hosting itself is some kind of Linux I think. (Sorry if it's not a stackoverflow question.)

• What's a good FOSS java servlet session replication solution

  I work on a very high volume public website running on Tomcat 5.5. Currently we require stickiness to a particular server in order to maintain session. I'd like to start replicating session, but have had trouble finding a good FOSS solution. I've written my own Manager (using memcached as the store) but am having trouble dealing with race conditions if more than one server is handling the requests for the same user. Is there a solution out there I should be looking at? I'm looking for not just something that works as a fallback if stickiness fails, but that would work if user requests are regularly spread to multiple servers.

  I'm getting really tired of working against click-once and I'm wondering if there's a better alternative. I'm looking for a programming environment that preferably does not depend on the .net framework. I'm not sure how much .net does for me exactly (though I have some idea) but I'd like to make my programs as independent of downloading a microsoft or other framework. I often think of professional programs like itunes, gimp or firefox that don't require someone to have a .net framwork. I'd also like to have these programs work on windows mac and linux. Any suggestions?
